Empire completely consumed me from the very first page! I was sitting on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down, and every chapter had me turning the pages faster to see what would happen next.
What starts as a cruel joke quickly spirals into something much deeper when Winnie kidnapped the wrong man. Augustus wasn't supposed to care, but his protective instincts kick in almost immediately, and watching his feelings develop while Winnie's world falls apart was incredibly emotional and captivating. As Winnie begins to realize she deserves happiness and someone who truly values her, Augustus is right there, willing to burn the world down to keep her safe. And honestly, what girl doesn't dream of that kind of devotion? ❤️
The relationship dynamics between Winnie and Augustus were one of my favorite parts of the book. They balanced each other perfectly, and their connection felt natural despite the chaos surrounding them. The character growth throughout the story was fantastic, especially Winnie's journey of discovering her worth and learning to put herself first.
The twists were amazing and kept me guessing, while the suspense had me completely invested in every moment. Add in the sizzling chemistry and intense emotions, and this book delivered everything I love in a dark romance. This is one of those books that is going to stay with you for a while.
If you enjoy dark romance with protective heroes, emotional character growth, addictive tension, and learning strong life lessons, and a man willing to do whatever it takes for the woman he loves, Empire is a must-read! I cannot wait to continue the Reclaimed Series. 📚🔥❤️
I received this book as a ARC read and this is my honest review.
This book hooked me almost immediately. The first couple of chapters had me completely invested, and I went into the rest of the story with really high expectations because the opening was so strong. The atmosphere, tension, and drama were introduced right away, and I loved the darker vibe mixed with the romance. It definitely had the kind of addictive start that makes you want to keep turning the pages.
While there were moments where the pacing felt a little uneven and some scenes seemed to move quickly, I still found myself enjoying the overall journey. There was so much happening between the characters that I was constantly curious to see where things would go next. I especially wish we had gotten even more backstory for Gus, Indi, Raff, and Seb because they all felt layered and interesting in their own ways. Their history and relationships hinted at deeper dynamics, and learning more about them would have made the emotional connections even stronger.
One thing I really enjoyed was the character development throughout the story. I liked seeing the changes in both main characters as the book progressed, especially as their relationship evolved and the tension between them shifted. Their chemistry was intense, and the spice absolutely delivered. The romance had the perfect mix of passion, possessiveness, and emotional moments that fit the dark romance atmosphere really well.
Overall, this was an entertaining and engaging read that kept my attention from beginning to end. Even when I felt a little lost at times, I was still invested in the characters and wanted to see how everything would unfold. If you enjoy dark mafia romance with tension, morally gray characters, strong chemistry, and plenty of spice, this is definitely a book worth checking out.
I have no idea where to start with one. The entire time I was reading I enjoyed it. Between the banter, the spice ( dom/sub ) and drama I was enveloped into the story. If you have any triggers make sure to read the warnings before hand. It does have moments in the story that some may not being able to handle. The story flowed very well. The side characters seemed like they were also part of the main ones, which is a great thing. I was able to create my own vision as I was reading of the characters, scenes and situations. That is a great thing when it comes to me.
This review may seem to be "all over" or not make sense lol, I apologize as my brain for some reason enjoys jumping around with whatever thoughts come to mind lol. I will say that I try to not to give out any spoilers due to I feel that every reader should have their own experience.
Winnie the FMC accidently kidnaps the wrong person who happens to be Augustus "Gus" who's in the mafia. Needless to say from that moment on things changed for the both of them. Gus fell for her it seemed like immediately after being kidnapped.
Winnie has an ex-boyfriend that is the type that seems he can't take no for an answer.
Gus loves calling Winnie " My little psycho". As you read the story you will understand fully why that is. At one point he called Winnie a "depraved museum goblin".
Indi - Gus' sister that is a highly trained killer basically. Loved her character and hope that she is brought around again in a following book.
There are so many parts of conversations that I found funny. Chapters 40-42 alone had some hilarious banter. Here are some: Winnie -" I can't be your queen and your wh*re!" Gus - "in my kingdom, you can!" Winnie when describing Gus' personal jet - Winnie-"looks like it cost more than my organs!" - Gus - "Good thing I own all your organs." Winnie - " Do not say thing in public!"
Gus had gotten Winnie a puppy and one point called it a "puffball of doom". When you read how he describes the dog in certain circumstances will have you laughing just as hard.
Even though this story has some dark moments and plenty of dom/sub spicy moments, it's those moments of banter that that get me. It's almost like a pallet cleanser so to speak between certain moments. C.J. Mae did a wonderful job on this story. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this series!
Thank you to the author C.J. Mae for the advance copy as I truly enjoyed this story. This is a voluntary and honest review.
This book didn’t ease me in — it grabbed me straight away. From the very first chapters, I was fully invested, and the strength of the opening set my expectations sky-high. The atmosphere was thick with tension and drama right from the start, and I loved how the dark tone blended so effortlessly with the romance. It had that dangerously addictive quality where every chapter ends with you needing just one more.
The pacing wasn’t perfect — a few moments felt rushed, while others slowed unexpectedly — but it never pulled me out of the story. There was always something simmering beneath the surface, especially between the characters, and I couldn’t stop wondering where everything was heading. I found myself craving more backstory for Gus, Indi, Raff, and Seb. Each of them felt layered and compelling, and their shared history hinted at deeper emotional threads that would’ve made those connections hit even harder.
What really stood out to me was the character growth. Watching both main characters shift, adapt, and evolve as the story unfolded was incredibly satisfying, especially as the tension between them transformed into something deeper. Their chemistry was intense, the spice absolutely delivered, and the romance struck that perfect balance of passion, possessiveness, and emotional vulnerability that suits a dark romance so well.
This is the first book in a deliciously dark, sarcastic world built around Winnie and Gus — and I devoured it.
I adored the found family element, the growth across the story, and an ending that gives you just enough satisfaction while still leaving you desperate for more. Book two can’t come soon enough — and yes, I’ll be crossing my fingers for an ARC of Indi and Seb🤞🏽🤞🏽

This book had my attention from the start. What appears to be pay back for a prank between siblings goes wrong in a spectacular way but full marks to Winnie for pulling it off! A case of mistaken identity alters the course of both Gus and Winnie’s lives . The first part of this book had me smiling on several occasions. The image of Augustus, the big bad Mafia boss and the pink bows will forever be imprinted in my mind. Despite trying otherwise, Gus becomes infatuated and intrigued with Winnie but this quickly morphs into obsession with stalkerish tendencies. Winnie too, finds herself drawn to Gus. There’s passion and emotional vulnerability on both sides, together with plenty of spice! Poor Gus finds himself in unfamiliar territory, thinking he is protecting Winnie but, unknowingly, it has the opposite effect. The further into this book I got, the more intense and dark it seemed to become. There’s an element of danger from the start and that same danger remains present for the majority of the book building and increasing in intensity and proving just how strong Winnie is. There’s some great character development with the two main characters, but I would have liked to have learnt a little more about Raff, Seb and Indi and seen a bit more of Winnie’s brother, Sully. However, all in all, a really enjoyable read and an author I will return to.
Received an ARC copy of this book This book drew me in immediately. It started incredibly strong, continued to build on that momentum, and ultimately exceeded my expectations. The way Winnie and Gus meet is incredibly unique and ironic, especially given his line of work. The story was addictive from the very beginning, and I didn't want it to end. However, there were a few elements that felt a bit rushed or underemphasized. I would have loved to explore some of the side characters' backgrounds or learn what happens next for them. In particular, I wanted to know more about Gus's core group; they were so prevalent in the story, but their dynamic wasn't explored as deeply as it could have been. They are implied to have a significant, weighty history, but the audience is left in the dark about the details. If we had been allowed to get to know them better, it would have made the connection to the story even stronger. I personally loved the premise of Winnie accidentally kidnapping a "crime lord" with ease due to a complete mistaken identity—and even more so that Gus believed she was trying to torture him when, in reality, she was just trying to win a prank war. Overall, it was an excellent read, and I will definitely be reading it again and I am grateful for CJ. Mae letting me experience the story a bit in advance

First off, I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. The banter felt natural, the story flowed well, and it was an easy read despite the length.
Our FMC, Winnie, is trying to prank kidnap her brother… except she grabs the wrong man. 😭 The problem? The man she accidentally kidnaps is Augustus, a powerful mafia boss.
And Augustus? Whew. I love an MMC that falls first and falls HARD, and Augustus definitely understood the assignment. Protective, obsessed, willing to do whatever it takes to keep Winnie safe. Once he decides she’s his, there is really was no turning back. 😮💨
As if accidentally kidnapping a mafia boss wasn’t enough drama, Winnie is already dealing with a whole real stalker situation that quickly spirals into something much bigger and more dangerous.
One thing I really enjoyed was the relationship between Winnie and Augustus. Their chemistry felt natural, and I loved watching Winnie grow into someone who finally recognized her own worth. And the spicy scenes 😮💨 let’s say there is a reason the book is called “empire” ha you will find out.
The stalker storyline, the suspense, the twists, and the emotional moments kept me invested. If you enjoy mafia romance, protective MMCs, obsessive love, danger, suspense, and a man willing to burn the world down for the woman he loves, this one is worth checking out.
I really enjoyed this book and how it started but I wish we had more Sully moments it just felt like he dropped from the face of the earth, I know he had a work trip abroad but why didn't she call him at all and when she's talking about not having anyone to talk to later on it's like call your brother tell him, like these two were close and playing pranks at the start of this then nothing like he isn't important enough, we hardly see much of an encounter with Gus and her brother it's sad as he's her only blood family left and he was important.
Other than that major issue for me I loved how Gus and Winnie first met, that is funny and horrifying at the same time, I loved the growth of the characters, pure obsession and control. It has me giggling at the serious situations sometimes but the banter and bratty behaviour was perfect. I especially loved daddy Dom Gus he was feral and sexy.
The side characters were amazing I want more back story of this family and the siblings history it feels like we could have gotten a great insight into them especially Seb and Indi.
I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing more of this crazy unhinged family.

Empire completely pulled me in from the very first chapter. What starts as a seemingly harmless prank quickly spirals into a dangerous world filled with secrets, threats, and a possessive mafia boss who refuses to let Winnie face anything alone.
Winnie was such a strong and relatable heroine. Despite everything she's been through, she refuses to break, and I loved watching her fight for herself while navigating the chaos that surrounds Augustus. Her past adds emotional depth to the story and makes her journey even more compelling.
And Augustus? The definition of a morally grey mafia hero. Protective, obsessive, ruthless, and completely unapologetic about it. He doesn't hide who he is, and that honesty somehow makes him even more addictive to read. The tension, chemistry, and constant push-and-pull between him and Winnie had me hooked.
What I loved most was that this wasn't just a mafia romance filled with danger and possessiveness—it also had genuine emotional depth, found family moments, and characters I became invested in. The suspense kept me turning pages, and every revelation made me even more desperate to know what happens next.
**Make sure you read trigger warnings before proceeding.**
This book had me hooked instantly, especially after Winnie realized she had kidnapped the wrong man, and the panic she was feeling afterward. The emotions were absolutely raw, and I'm glad Winnie got the love that she deserved with Gus, the revenge her ex deserved, and that she was able to find a friend in his sister. My favorite part of the book had to be when he gave them food poisoning, her puking first, then him because he saw her puking. It was cute, funny, and entirely felt. I'm glad they were able to make humor out of the situation and move along.
There were parts in the book that seemed like they were dragging, but eventually would get you to the part where it was no longer dragging, bringing you right back quickly. I was struggling a bit to finish it; however, I made sure to push right through it.
If you like rom-com, revenge, mafia, he falls first kind of romance? This one is definitely for you. Definitely worth it.
The first book in this wonderfully dark and sarcastic world of Winnie and Gus. I binged this book at 9am after thinking I'd read a chapter and then get on with the day, nope, no hope, Gus pulled me in and in 2 days I've finished and wish I had more. Winnie is a true curvy FMC, a real representation of us girls with curves and how we wish we could be loved. Gus is the mafia oldest son running the show who falls first and so hard you want him in your life, flaws and all.
I love the found family arc, the changes, growth and the ending is what you need... but anticipation for book 2 will have me hoping and wishing Im lucky enough for that ARC too!
Great read 5🌟🌟🌟🌟 Spicey Rating 🌶🌶( but just right )
I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t wait to see where the story would go.
The premise alone had me intrigued: Winnie is trying to prank her brother and ends up kidnapping the wrong guy… Gus. And then he becomes completely obsessed with her 🔥 It’s a spicy mafia romance!! 🌶️❤️🔥😮💨
There was a point in the middle where I started thinking, “Okay, we get it, you’re in love,” and I found myself waiting for something bigger to happen. But OMG, when things did happen, they really happened. I was absolutely hooked and couldn’t stop reading.
I also loved the author’s writing style. It felt different from other books I’ve read, and it I loved it 🤌🏼
Winnie accidentally kidnaps Gus, but after a few days, she soon realizes her mistake. While Gus is the grumpy mafia boss who should punish her, he doesn't unless its in the bedroom. Instead, he becomes obsessed, but he isn't her only stalker. Their romance blossoms fast, as does the obsession to keep Winnie safe. Winnie finally finds the family she has been craving, but lies threaten to collapse it all. This is a fast-paced book, and I loved every second of it, not just falling in love with the main characters but all the side characters. This is action-packed, spicy, and full of devotion. I can't wait for the next book.
Mafia Romance… but make it fluffy It was a good fluffy romance, but it had me wanting more. More spice (it has a fair amount, I just want more :p), more details of their relationship, more character development. He falls hard, and fast Their first spice scene though, his reaction to certain… developments will be living in my head for a long while. Would definitely recommend for first time mafia romance reader
Even before release, Empire: Book One in The Reclaimed Series already feels like something truly special. C.J. Mae has created a story that immediately captures attention with its dark, mysterious atmosphere and intriguing world building. The premise alone promises an emotional and unforgettable journey.
This book completely captivated me in the best possible way. It was definitely a "Just One More Chapter" kind of book, and had me up until 2:24am. Accidentally kidnapping a Mafia boss is one hell of an introduction to our FMC, Winnie, but here we are. Not only does she have to deal with that, but then she also has to deal with a stalker, which is a whole other dangerous situation.
Our MMC, Augustus, the Mafia Boss, falls FAST and HARD, and I love that about him. He is the epitome of "I'll burn the world about her".
The chemistry between Winnie and Augustus is phenomenal, and the spice is caliente! It didn't feel forced at all. I also loved how Augustus helped to pour into Winnie until she recognized who she was. The FMC and MMC's character development was well thought out as the book progressed.
The spice in this book was *Chef's Kiss*
The supporting characters balanced the book out well, especially Indigo... I hope to see more of her moving forward, because that story NEEDS to be told.
If you are looking for a Dark Mafia Romance with a Morally Gray, protective MMC, a plus-size FMC, with accidental kidnapping for a little razzle-dazzle, I highly recommend Empire. Just be sure to check the triggers because it gets a little dark, but well worth it.
The first couple of chapters had me intrigued, and I just had to see where it went. I mean, accidentally kidnapping the wrong person? I'm here for it. I love Gus and Winnie together and I loved seeing them develop and grow throughout the book. I'm definitely ready for book 2.
Thank you, CJ, for allowing me to read this one as an ARC reader!
Wow - what a debut! Gus and Winnie were everything, I loved this book from start to finish. It made me feel all the feels, from gasping in shock to laughing out loud. I can’t wait for more from this series!
