I started this book thinking I knew how it would go, and it did for a good portion of it. But then the very realistic, messy and heartbreaking fallout happened. The way Carter accepts the wrong he's done to Lily and instead of all the other romance book tropes we usually get, he slowly begins to heal himself after imploding his carefully constructed life and lets her walk away from him. All while being a quiet presence in the background should Lily need him is what won me over. It wasn't a perfect happily ever after. It was hard won and I liked that.
