Evelyn has spent years outrunning the ghosts of her past. She changed her name, crossed an ocean, and buried every trace of the life she lost. England was supposed to be a refuge, a quiet corner of the world where she could finally breathe again. Instead, she collided with Stockton Northcott, the brooding, battle‑scarred Earl of Treyarnon, a man whose secrets are as dangerous as the shadows that cling to his ancestral home.

The simple task of sorting through the late earl’s accounts should have been harmless. Instead, it becomes the moment Stockton Northcott realizes she’s the only person he can trust.

Stockton returned from the Continent after his father’s death only to inherit a failing estate, a tangle of debts, and a fury he hides behind charm and razor‑sharp wit. Convinced someone in the neighboring families sabotaged his father, he’s ready for a fight.

But not for the captivating widow who sees straight through him.

Evelyn can untangle numbers with ease but not the heat that sparks every time Stockton touches her. His kisses crack through the walls she’s spent years rebuilding, threatening the fragile new life she’s desperate to protect.

And Stockton, who doesn’t trust anyone, finds himself falling for the one woman who could destroy him. Or save him.

When the truth about Evelyn’s past collides with the secrets surrounding his father’s downfall, passion and danger twist together. Now they must decide whether to cling to the lies that kept them alive— or choose each other against every impossible odd.

✔ Hidden identity ✔ Haunted widow ✔ Brooding earl ✔ Forced proximity ✔ Mystery on the estate ✔ Found family ✔ Slow burn ✔ Kisses that ruin lives (in the best way)

I have read a lot of Mackenzie’s books and loved them all, but this one is my new favorite. Evelyn has lived through a horrible time and lost both a husband and child to the war. She has many secrets and after meeting Paul and Kaya Conrad and being invited to stay at their home, Nelda Hall, she is finally starting to heal. The Conrad family is very different than most in England, the house is full of laughing children of all ages, seniors, aunts and all love each other openly. She has never seen so many people in one place. When out for a walk she is surprised by a man while she was having fun. When they talk, she feels something she hasn’t felt in a long time, a spark of arousal! Major Stockton, the Earl of Treyarnon is fascinated by her. When Paul offers her help to Stockton, they are both surprised. After a letter from his cousin, he believes someone took advantage of his father, and he needs to find out who. As they work together and get to know each other, both are more than attracted to each other. Solving the mystery of the missing money, learning secrets from both their past and both getting a second chance in life. Wow, such a story. This is a fast read as you will not be able to put it down. Plenty of passion, feeling and the right amount of who done it too. I loved all the characters except the villain, of course. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

When the seductive, secretive widow Evelyn Bartley meets the brooding, battle scarred Earl of Treyarnon, sparks fly immediately. The Earl is drawn to her not just for her beauty, but also her razor sharp intellect and her mathematical abilities. Evelyn too cannot deny her physical response to his raw masculinity and aristocratic hauteur. Although both are extremely guarded about their mutual attraction at first, as they spend more time with each other, they realize that their feelings run deeper than they would like admit to themselves at that point of time.

Although I generally prefer my love stories strewn with more obstacles in the lovers’ path either in the form of initial animosity, past grievances or terrible misunderstandings, in this case the author’s witty and engaging writing and a well-paced plot compensated for it. Also, I loved the manner in which the connection between Evelyn and the Earl has been shown. Not only do they have undeniable chemistry, but they also are in tune with each other on an instinctual level, as is amply elaborated in the novel.

I must admit that from the moment go – the book’s cover, the title and the description - all drew me in and in fact were the reason I started the book. I dived in expecting to read an engrossing regency tale of second chances, replete with witty banter and sizzling scenes and I am happy to confess, that this one checked all the boxes for me.

Thanks to the author for the ARC !

There was an interesting background to the lead characters in this book. The Fmc was a widow who had married an Egyptian and bore him a son. They had been killed in the unrest after Napoleon’s conquest. The Mac had fought 8n the peninsula. They met incidentally and had a mutual attraction which was enhanced when she helped sort out the estate finances. While this made for an interesting plot, more could have been made of certain events. The backstory in Egypt could have been explored more fully as well as the personal relationships within the family of the Mmc. The denouement was anticlimactic where a confrontation to find out who was swindling the estate could have had more conflict and a more tortuous investigation. While enjoyable, the book left you wanting further explanation.

Evelyn was a true treasure. She not only was pleasing to look at she was intelligent. She was excellent with numbers, but she had to coax to see the accounts of Stockton's estate. He was ever so thankful that she did when she showed him the results. Skimming and stealing by those trusted to handle the family accounts while Stockton was away at war!!! How despicable! The results of the confrontation was predictable. A romance and a mystery about money missing. A page turner with twists.

Great chemistry and interesting personalities! Evelyn has a real mathematical talent with a great eye for recognizing patterns. The earl inherited a dwindling estate with indications someone had been systematically siphoning off funds. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. So the Earl accepts Evelyn’s help identifying the culprits. It’s a page-turner to enjoy.

Evelyn returns to England after her husband and son pass away in Egypt. She meets Stockton in the country. A romance built while reviewing ledgers ensues. The story is enjoyable and the heroine is valued for her intelligence and insight, not just the ways she looks in a gown. A generally happy, quick read that was just what I needed after a dark, convoluted mystery!

I love the unconventional Conrad family and those that are pulled into their orbit - looks like I'll have to find their books while waiting for the next story in this series.

Slow burns never fail to capture my attention, and this one was really well done. I can't say that it beat book one for me personally, but it's still a story I'll happily reread in the future. Excited for more stories in this series!
