Eager to prove his worth to his kingdom, Prince Christian has taken cover in Brigadoon's caravan as a hostage to infiltrate the Dundalk Empire. Negotions for peace between the kingdoms is all the young prince yearns for, but the rebellious Falcon's Talon group has something else in mind...Now Zeke's loyalty as Christian's knight and lover will be put to the test in this heroic quest for justice!
Third volume of the yaoi romance series following the love of Prince Christian and his knight bodyguard Zeke. The main characters are good, but I found it increasingly hard to keep track of the supporting cast. Set against a back drop of political intrigue and constant double-crossing and weaving back and forth between flashbacks pertaining to various characters the story is quite hard to follow and frankly not interesting enough to make me care that much. There is also no humour to this which makes it a bit dull. This particular volume wasn't very sexy or romantic either - our protagonists are bogged down with angst and the story is bogged down with politics.
Artwork is pretty average. There is apparently a 4th volume, but I can't seem to track it down and this volume didn't inspire me to be too disappointed about that. Black Knight is an OK series and those out there that like epic historically set yaoi will probably enjoy it, but its not one of my favourites.
Ah that was really good. Volume 3 gets right back in with the main characters, which of course I was happy to see. It is definitely heavy on the politics (to be clear, fictional politics of kingdoms at war) and, as is usual for this series, there are a LOT of characters to keep track of, but it's still really enjoyable because the characters themselves are very enjoyable, and because the serious stuff is balances well with a few lighter moments, and even a brief glimpse of purely fluffy bonding time between our main couple <3
There no sex at all in this volume, and the story does not suffer in the least for it. I'm just ever so pleased that this series remains a good solid story all on it's own, and simply does not shy away from very briefly and only now and then portraying the physical side of the main relationship, while also portraying all the other sides of it as well. Seriously this is just such a nice solid story. Can't wait to pick up volume 4!
Also want to note that at the very end of this volume we do dip back into King Aran's side of things with a few flashbacks. In volume 2 I found that to be really boring, and it had taken up way too much of that volume. That's not the case at all in volume 3! It's just a brief look into what actually went down at the time the king was poisoned, as it had only been briefly mentioned back in volume 1, as well a little of the king going to war back in the day. It was really, really interesting this time! Very well done.
The plot is finally getting somewhere, there's less confusion, but it's still not a cohesive journey. It's somewhat difficult to get inside the thought process of some of the characters, and what their actions really want to convey (or what the big plan really is, in layman's terms). Seeing as the fourth volume is hard to get a hold of, I'm not too saddened by not being able to read it (thought it may have been nice to see some of the loose ends tied together).
