For Bomber Command, the term 'Phoney War' never really meant much. Five Blenheims of 107 Squadron were among the blood and bullets the day after war was declared and only one came back.
The book is about Bomber Command leading up to World War 2 and it's early operations up to the end of the fall of France. It goes into detail how unprepared Bomber Command was to wage a modern war, both in equipment and in tactics, and how valuable lessons were learned for later bomber campaigns at the expense of brave and highly trained men from the peace-time RAF. The book is eye opening and it is hard to fathom that this small and inexperienced force was turned into the mighty RAF Bomber Command that launched Thousand Bomber raids against the Reich. I really like the author's engaging writing style and this is another good book by Thorburn.
