About the author

Danish writer and essayist Austro-German origin.
Educated as a macroeconomist, Janne Teller worked for the United Nations and the European Union in resolving conflicts and humanitarian issues around the world, especially in Africa. She began writing fiction full time since 1995. She has lived in various parts of the world, such as Brussels, Paris, Copenhagen, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Mozambique. Now living in New York.
Janne Teller's literature, which consists mainly of novels and essays, always focuses on existential outlook on life and human civilization, which causes often controversial debates. Furthermore, it was thought that her work Intet (2000), which was initially banned, revolutionized the novel for youth, and became a worldwide success.

Funnily enough, this is the third book I read involving some big wig from Valhalla taking a trip downstairs.

Whereas the hilarious 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman and 'The Son of the Thunder God' by Arto Paasilinna focused on Mr. Thor and his kin, Janne Teller chose no less than the CEO of Norse cosmogony: Odin.

'Odin's Island' is a brilliant but long winded novel.
Miss Teller has a knack for creative storytelling and here plays quite skillfully on the thin razorblade separating a young adult from a grown up audience.

However, there's too much on 'Odin's Island' plate to get a satisfactory reading meal.

The author of this book juggles with Nordic sagas, environmentalism, religious fanatism, pure escapism and geopolitical frictions. No surprises that sometimes one of these juggling balls falls down thus affecting the plot of the novel. It's hard to tell a folktale dressing it up with a dystopian cloth.

Characters are very sketchy here and Janne Teller doesn't seem to care much to develop some of them as they may deserve.
Personally, I couldn't help but picture Tintin's 'Captain Haddock' every time 'Ambrosius the Fisher' said anything, just like the character 'Gunnar the Head' reminded me Kjell Bjarne from the Norwegian movie (and novel)'Elling'.

Reading an English translation of this book, didn't help me as too many names were translated and with a randomness that left me quite puzzled. It's quite obvious that, say, if you change the original 'Smedieby' into the plain 'Smith's Town' the whole architecture of a modern saga collapses.

As for the religious subplot here, I found it quite brave but it may be hard to chew for those who don't appreciate a certain blend of Danish humour (including the notorious Mohammed cartoons and a movie like 'Adam's Apples').

Anyways, with its pros and cons, 'Odin's Island' was a pleasant and refreshing novel and left mostly good memories.

Non per essere scortese, come direbbe il Fabbro di Fabbripoli, ma a questo punto devo dirvi di mettere via quello che state leggendo e immergervi in questo capolavoro qui. È un romanzo lungo, una specie di viaggio andata e ritorno, se vogliamo, ma lungo il cammino incontrerete tante cose notevoli: dalla saggezza di Odino alla proverbiale accoglienza degli abitanti di Fabbripoli, nonché di Postalia, per non dimenticare. Un romanzo affascinante e misterioso che non mancherà di sorprendervi fino alla fine.

Die Idee gefiel mir besser als die Umsetzung, denn das Buch las sich wie ein zäher Kaugummi.

An Handlung gibt das Buch einfach nicht genug her, um 480 Seiten zu füllen. Man könnte jetzt behaupten, es wäre eine ruhige Geschichte, aber dem ist nicht so. Dauernd kommt es zu Gewaltausbrüchen, Menschen sterben oder werden verprügelt. Das Problem ist hier die ständige Wiederholung und andere unnötige Szenen oder gar ganze Handlungsstränge, die nichts zum Verlauf der Geschichte beitragen und das Buch so künstlich in die Länge ziehen.

Dann ist da noch die konfuse Geografie. Eine Karte wäre wirklich hilfreich gewesen, jedoch konnte ich mir soviel zusammenreimen:
Die Geschichte startet in einem Mittelalter-Setting, wechselt nach 50 Seiten zu 1999 und spielt in einem Land namens "Südnorden", dass sich seit Jahrhunderten immer mal wieder mit seinem Nachbarn "Nordnorden" bekriegt. Nebenbei findet man heraus, dass "Nordnorden" früher ein Teil "Südnordens" war, sich jedoch durch einen Bürgerkrieg von "Südnorden" lossagte. Und anders als der Name es vermuten lässt, befindet sich "Nordnorden" nicht nördlich von "Südnorden", sondern östlich. Außerdem gibt es nördlich von "Südnorden" noch "Altnorden", dass "Nordnorden" erobert hat?

Das Ganze spielt übrigens in Europa. Ich nehme an, dass es in der fernen Vergangenheit mal ein Nordisches Reich, passend zur Nordischen Religion, gab, das "Norden" hieß.

Iperborea fantastica.
Gli autori scandinavi pubblicati da Iperborea continuano a sorprendere. Confesso che un titolo così altisonante, complice la riproduzione in copertina di un’antica mappa marinara, mi aveva indotto a temere lo scatenarsi tumultuoso dell’ennesima trama fantasy in chiave nordica in senso stretto, con tanto di divinità arboree e personificazioni delle forze della natura in entità più o meno legittimamente sacre.
Forse a questo punto diviene doveroso prendere invece in considerazione l’ipotesi che una simile idea della cultura nordica stia al Nord Europa più o meno come lo sterotipo della pizza e degli spaghetti (magari condite con un paio di note di mandolino) sta alla gastronomia nostrana..

Odin lander med sin slæde på en ø den 24/12. Den ene af hans to heste har brækket et ben i en meteorstorm. Befolkningen på øen lever temmelig gammeldags, og ingen kan hjælpe med hesten. Man mener dog, at Odin vil kunne finde en veterinarius på Kontinentet, som man i øvrigt ikke har nogen forbindelse til. Da havet fryser til, begiver Odin sig af sted mod Kontinentet. Her bliver han forkommen indlagt på sygehuset og anbringes hurtigt på den lukkede, fordi ingen tror på ham. I søgen efter hans identitet, får avisomtalen flere religiøse retninger til at tro, at Odin er den genopstandne Jesus, og dermed opstår der problemer pga demonstrationer. Mens Sydnorden og Nordnorden strides om ejerskabet til Odins ø, som i århundreder har været strøget fra søkortene, problemer drøftes på højeste niveau i Den Vesteuropæiske Bastion, flere rekognosceringsfly forsvinder i luftrummet over øen, og de religiøse sekter kommer op at slås, kæmper en lille gruppe for at hjælpe Odin tilbage til den utilnærmelige ø: bankdame Sigbrit Holland og fiskeren Ambrosius.
Blandingen af magisk realisme, tidsrejse og satire er måske nok en god idé - i teorien. Men her er det alt for langt, alt for udpenslet beskrevet og derfor noget anstrengende i længden. Det overrasker i forhold til Janne Teller.

Romanzo molto particolare in cui elementi realistici e fantastici si mescolano tra loro in modo imprevedibile.
Un Odino che non assomiglia al dio norrena, ma più ad un vecchietto smemorato che parla per proverbi, finisce su un'isola che non esiste sulle cartine e da lì raggiunge un continente che assomiglia molto al nostro. La sua presenza scatena follie millenariste, fanatismi religiosi e politici, fomenta conflitti e sembra tirare fuori il peggio dalla maggioranza della popolazione. Ad aiutarlo, una Donna Bella, un pescatore che parla al plurale e una manciata di personaggi che sembrano usciti da un circo di freak.
Se da una parte è un libro apprezzabile per l'ironia e l'originalità con cui tratta i temi del fanatismo e dell'odio razziale, dall'altra è un romanzo molto prolisso, a tratti lento e non sempre convincente.

Ma ricordate: "Non c'è sfortuna a cui un po' di fortuna non possa porre rimedio"

Scampa alle quattro stelline grazie alla genialità dei contenuti. La traduzione procede liscia e perfetta per i 3/4 del percorso, poi finisce l'olio e scappa la tragedia. Nelle ultime cento pagine si ravvisa il panico da scadenza del traduttore: moltiplicazione al cubo dei refusi, "un'altro", tante dita che inciampano sulla tastiera - regali a profusione per il lettore, in piena solidarietà col clima natalizio del libro. Leggenda narra che l'editor preposto alla correzione del testo sia ancora in pausa pranzo dal 2001.

Overall an intriguing plot, which unfortunately suffers from a lack of focus and depth by trying to accomplish too many things (historical mystery, mythology, religious fanaticism, international diplomacy, politics, etc.). The most irksome feature for me ends up being that for a novel of nearly 500 pages, none of the characters feel like three dimensional human beings.

Ay madre mía, qué cosa pesada este libro.
Salvando las distancias, me pasó lo mismo que con esa catástrofe que es "The maze runner": la premisa está buena, pero POR QUÉ NO SE TERMINAN LAS PALABRAS!!!???
Básicamente es esto: Odín (el dios de todos los dios según la mitología nórdica) tiene un accidente con su caballo y cae en un pueblo rarísimo donde no hay veterinario. Pura buscar quién pueda curarle el caballo, cruza un mar congelado y termina en la Copenague de nuestro mundo, donde no sabe dónde está ni qué hacer. De ahí, la historia termina hablando sobre genealogías, política internacional, fanatismo religioso y personajes que aparecen de una hoja a la otra y vos creés que te salteaste algo o tu libro vino fallado.
Y, como si necesitara rellenar páginas para la editorial, tiene páginas y páginas y páginas sobre nada. Los personajes repiten frases larguísimas, una y otra vez, sin motivo alguno. La autora se refiere a Ciudad Correos como "Ciudad Correos la que no debe ser dejada de lado" porque sí.
Aburrido, no va a ninguna parte. Debe ser el primero de los libros con dioses como personajes que me decepciona tanto.

Il libro è scritto come un racconto epico antico dove gli epiteti sono fondamentali per far capire i personaggi, per caratterizzarli e per portarli a memoria.
In soldoni è "metti un giorno Odino che giunge sulla terra, fa un incidente, perde la memoria e porta scompiglio sul continente".
Ma è semplicistico riassumerlo così.
Di certo abbiamo una divinità nordica che è il fulcro attorno cui girano un'isola mitica, ferma nel tempo; due regni scandinavi (generici); la politica; tanti e troppo squinternati (ma veri purtroppo) fanatici religiosi; "semplici" persone alla ricerca di un significato. Ecco per certi versi questo libro è un libro di significato del proprio destino e, per quanto Odino sia arrivato per portare funesti presagi (i quali si avverano quasi del tutto, forse...), il mondo continua a girare con la propria follia finché non si rischia e non ci si pone a risolvere le cose per il bene.

I read this book back in 1999 when it came out in Denmark, and I have since lost count of how many times I've re-read it. My judgement is certainly clouded by nostalgia, but I still genuinely think this book is great, full of imagination, and a different take on the Norse gods and Scandinavia.

Jane Teller er en fremragende, men i DK lidt overset forfatter. Odins Ø er fra 1999 og virker idag måske lidt skabelonagtig i sin civilisationskritik. Jeg ville begynde med Kattens Tramp, der er en fængende og original kærlighedshistorie med europolitiske undertoner.
