True Love Way is a story of a first love, a true love, a once in a lifetime love. A love you would fight for, sacrifice for and do anything to keep. This, my friends, is an epic love story.

When Dillion Decker is just 12 years old, his entire life is changed forever. One moving truck next door. One glance at the girl his age wearing sunglasses and blowing bubbles. He’s a goner. This girl is something else. Her name is Penelope Finnel, and she is his new best friend.
Since the day she and her family moved into the house beside mine, I’ve become obsessed with Penelope Finnel.

 photo bf8c9dca-f372-4f82-9a6f-9d7c70bb1a59_zpseaiwnaqc.jpg

As the years go by, Penelope and Dillion are together constantly. Dillion learns something about Penelope. She is often sad. Not just a little sad like everyone gets, her sadness is so strong that sometimes it’s debilitating. Sometimes, she can hardly get out of bed or function. Written in dual pov, you get to really see what’s going on with Pen. I thought that was so important. Going through her head when she’s going through this.

Dillion does anything and everything he can for his best friend. To make her smile. It’s his job to make her laugh, to keep her in the light and happy. He loves her, he’ll do anything for her, but as time goes on, Dillion realizes he can and will do anything for Pen, but he can’t save her.

“Dillion,” Penelope whispers.
“Sometimes I’m so sad.”
“That’s okay.”

“I don’t know how to fix it.” she admits.
Emotion pulls in her brown eyes.
“I’ll help you,” I say.

Dillion is more than devoted to Penelope. There is something to say about this type of love and devotion. Something so special about someone, anyone, but especially someone so young who gives so much. His love for her will move you. Inspire you. Dillion is such a special character. This boy will steal your heart.

Penelope is ill. She has a disease that she struggles with and no matter the treatment, it seems that it will be a lifelong struggle. Dillion loves her regardless. I loved Penelope’s character. I felt her pain while reading. I can’t imagine going through something so crippling. She was strong, and when she couldn’t be, Dillion was strong for her.

I loved the love they had for each other. I loved watching it go from friendship, to first loves, to true love.

 photo 7d7a444a-8b07-460a-a389-33e440d89c7a_zpsqcwa9iyl.jpg

I fell in love with Mary Elizabeth’s poetic and lyrical writing style in Dusty. I love how this woman writes. Dillion and Penelope’s journey wasn’t always smooth sailing, but it was nowhere near as tumultuous or stressful as Dusty. There was a tad bit of angst, but it wasn’t long lasting or nearly as difficult to read. I think that this was a very smart move on the authors part. These characters have already been through so much.

I feel like I need to take a moment to shout out to Wayne, Penelope’s dad. He is just such a fantastic character. I love his candy payments and his relationship with Dillion. Dillion’s sister was also a fun character. She was a trip. I loved most all the characters in this book, but Dillion was by far my favorite. I love how he saw perfection in Penelope, flaws and all. He never gave up on her, no matter how difficult things got. He loves her completely and unconditionally.

 photo 6ca8fd4e-3318-4569-8f5a-d8a6bff2e272_zpseagz7v8a.jpg

True Love Way is so much more than a story about best friends and first loves. It’s not always an easy story to read. It’s real, it’s raw, it’s genuine and all consuming. This story touched my heart. It made me feel and stayed on my mind days after reading it. The ending, well, I only have one word for that ending. Perfection.

I think it’s so hard to cover a topic like this, and I feel like Mary Elizabeth did a perfect job or portraying extreme depression and what it’s like living with it day to day. The highs, the lows, the in-between. How it doesn’t just effect you, but everyone who loves you.

If your looking for a beautiful story that toes the line of YA/NA, with a hero that you will completely and utterly adore, a heroine with struggles- yet who works to overcome them, a story that will make you laugh, smile, cry and will move you, this is one I highly recommend.
“I love you like no other.”

This is my first book by this author and definitely it won’t be my last. A very touching story “True Love Way” is a book about finding your soulmate, finding ‘the one’, about true unconditional love. So...what is true love? How do you know what you feel is true love? How you recognize the signs of true love? Penelope and Dillon have been fortunate enough to find it, to find it when they were just kids.

description

Dillon and Penelope met when they were 12 years old. Since the moment Dillon laid eyes on his new neighbor he knew she’s different from any other girl he met. He likes her and he likes to spend his free time with her, even if his friends tease him about it.

Penelope is different from other girls and she knows it. She suffers from manic depression and bipolar affective disorder, a genetic mental illness. There’s no cure for this illness and from time to time sadness paralyzes her. She feels like everything hurts, having also anxiety attacks. The only thing that helps her deal with her condition are her colorful sunglasses who helps her ‘being invisible’. All she wants to have friends and to be normal. At first Dillon doesn’t know what‘s wrong with Penelope, but he knows that he wants to help her, that he wants to be there for her, to gave her a little comfort.
As time passes, Penelope and Dillon become best friends and Dillon finds out more about Penelope’s mental disorder, realizing how serious this illness is. Over the years their friendship becomes more and they find out how perfect they are for each other.

“Why do you like kissing me?”
“Because you’re my favorite.”

description

“Big brown eyes look up at me, and Pen circles her arms around my neck. With dirty lips beside my ear, she whispers, You make me so happy.”

As they get older, Penelope’s illness is more difficult to control, but Dillon is always there for her to help her, to give her strength.

description

Despite the subject matter, “True Love Way” is a heartwarming, touching, sweet story that put a big smile on my face numerous times. First and foremost I have to say I really enjoyed the writing. It’s simplistic, yet evocative and in my opinion prefect for an YA novel and for this book.

What I loved the most about this book is the male main character, Dillon. He was simply amazing. I loved him to pieces!

“She was born for me to love.”

His love for Penelope was absolutely wonderful and moving and I felt it with all my being. He loves hard, fierce and forever. He’s sweet, caring, compassionate, attentive. He’s everything Penelope needs. The way he sacrifices himself over the years warmed and broke my heart at the same time.

“She’s all there is and everything I need.”

He skips school, he stays up with her when he can’t sleep and he’s ready to do anything for the girl he loves so much. He hurts for her and he just wants to make her smile and to take away her pain. I loved him for the fact he accepts Penelope just the way she is and for the fact he accepts her illness.

description

I truly admired his strength and dedication and I loved his love for Penelope.

The author did a really great job portraying Penelope’s illness. My heart ached for her and it was really heartbreaking to read about her mental disorder. Needless to say, to ‘see’ how powerless she is, was hard. I’m so glad she has this wonderful boy who is ready to do anything for her. She is truly blessed to have him in her life and she is aware of that.

Penelope and Dillon are made for each other and I really felt it. They have insecurities, they make mistakes and they felt real to me. Their tenderness was beautiful and their love pure and genuine. I loved all their interactions as kids and as teenagers and I enjoyed all their moments with their families and friends.

To say that I loved the epilogues it would be an understatement. They are sweet, magical and just perfect. The side characters are endearing as well, especially Penelope's father.

Overall, a wonderful read!

”I’ve loved her since bubblegum bubbles and moving trucks. I love her for red heart-shaped glasses. I love her because of the way she looks flying on my handlebars.
I love her.”

Mary Elizabeth delivered an enjoyable read that takes a young friendship of Dillon and Pen through middle school, high school and beyond. They face Penelope’s mental illness together although as young boy Dillon just wants to make her smile.

”Don’t you get it, Dillon?” she says, struggling to keep her head straight. “There’s a reason why you’re my only friend. Why haven’t you figured this out yet?”

There are many days that Pen can’t even get out of bed and many nights of lost sleep and through it all Dillon helps her because she’s simply his girl.

”For her, I will stay awake forever.”

There is a bit of angst as the couple hits their late teens but nothing over the top or damaging to anyone’s enjoyment of the story.

I must give a shout out to Penelope’s Father, Wayne. He was my favorite character of this book… with his “boy” and payments in M & Ms and his mustache he was very creative and unforgettable.

description

Pen’s struggles were all emcompassing and I think that’s what took away from the final step of being epic. The fact that she didn’t have any likes and dreams of her own just being mentally ill and always fighting. I can't pin point it but I just felt like she was one dimensional. Still I really did enjoy this story and would recommend friends picking it up!

This was an incredible story about two kids who are lucky enough to find each other, two souls who are meant to be. This is also a story about depression and how heartbreaking it is for everyone involved. Told in Mary Elizabeths' unique style of writing, it takes us on a journey from childhood to adulthood and all the trials and tribulations of young love when faced with something most kids never have to worry about.

When Dillon Decker meets Penelope Finnel at 12 years old, he is instantly smitten by the girl who hides behind her coloured sunglasses and his protector skills soon come into play when he realises she is not like most girls.

"Don't you get it Dillon?
There's a reason why you're my only friend.
Why haven't you figured this out yet?"

Penelope is sad sometimes, and Dillon feels it's his job to make her smile, and when he does he feels like the King of the world. For a young boy, turning man, he is an old soul who will do anything for the girl next door. But is it ever enough?

_ _ _ _

I loved Dillon, his love for Pen was fierce and it was hard to watch him suffer when his girl was going through so much turmoil. Pen was a girl going through so much pain, and never felt good enough for the boy who always tried to make sure she got out of bed in the mornings and brushed her hair.

There was angst, especially when we got to their late teenage years, and I literally had to stop reading because I was extremely nervous as to where this story might be leading, but then my heart slowly got put back together and I was happy again.

If you were a fan of Dusty, then you won't be disappointed. This was a fabulous first solo novel from Mary Elizabeth that will take you back to your childhood, and all the emotional anxiety that comes with your first love.

"Inhaling a deep breath, I go to her.
That's what I've always done.
For her, I will stay awake forever."

One more thing, the Epilogue = The Best! <3

This is a stand-alone novel, told in dual POV.

This is my first book by Mary Elizabeth and I was warned that her writing is captivating, but a little angsty. Angst makes me a nervous wreck, so I was a little terrified to start this one, but I am so glad I did. True Love Way is such a unique story of unconditional, true love.

Since the day she and her family moved into the house beside mine, I’ve become obsessed with Penelope Finnel.

From the moment Dillon saw Penelope he knew she was different, special. He knew he shouldn’t like girls, they had cooties and such, but once he befriended Pen it was on. They became best friends, he looked out for her and protected her.

Pen isn’t used to having friends. She knows she is different from other kids and not in the cool way Dillon sees. Pen suffers from mental illness and for most there is no cure, only treatment. At a young age she knew she was different, but didn’t know why. Now as she is getting older, she just wants to fit in like most young girls.

“Why can’t I be normal?”

Over time Pen and Dillion’s friendships develops into more. They have always loved each other, but once they begin to physically change they develop a physical attraction. Dillion and Pen begin dating at a young age, while so many things are changing. As they get older and enter high school cliques are formed. Dillion is smart and popular, while Pen is behind in school and quiet. She is known for being different and as you know different is usually encouraged amongst adolescents.

To me this is when true love really begins comes into play. Dillion doesn’t care if Pen is different, he just wants to love and take care of her. He wants her to be happy, to make her smile, to be herself. Their love isn’t one sided Pen’s self-loathing causes her doubt if they should be together, because she thinks he deserves more. True Love Way is a story about determining if love really does conquer all.

Saying I am impressed or enjoyed this story would be a huge understatement. Mental illness is such a difficult subject that is often times overlooked or minimized, but it’s real. I am not a medical professional, but I loved how her illness was presented. It wasn’t sugar coated, it was real and scary, but true.

This story is beautifully written. It was engaging and heart breaking, but also had moments of humor. This story had my heart racing one second, laughing the next, then came the tears. Even now as I write my review I can’t stop thinking about these characters and their journey.

I read a lot of books and most of the time I rate based on my emotions. Unfortunately there are books I will forget in a few weeks, then there are books I am not sure I will ever forget. I don’t think I will ever forget this book or these heart breaking characters. I am inspired by their strength, unconditional love and devotion.

I highly recommend this story!

“I love you like no other.”

"WHY AM I SO BROKEN? her note reads." "You're perfect to me."

Wow, what a beautiful journey. I absolutely loved this book, the writing was phenomenal. Dillon and Penelope have found a special place in my heart. The love they share is something people search for their whole lives. The qualities Dillon possess are so rare and such a joy to read about. I feel like I grew up with these two, almost as if I've known them my whole life. The trials and struggles they had to endure and overcome broke my heart. Dillon, is such a great soul, he had enough love to conquer anything.

"She was born for me to love."

Reading about Penelope's depression and anxiety hit home for me. I love that there is a book like this for people to realize they aren't alone in their very real day to day struggle. This story shows a true depiction of what it's like to love someone that suffers from depression and anxiety, as well as, what it's like to experience those issues personally. Even though this book deals with some heavy issues, I found myself laughing, giggling, and smiling through a lot of it. The last 30% of the book I cried, but most of the time I was smiling through my tears. The ending of this story cemented True Love Way's place in my top favorite books. This story is beautiful, there really is no other way to describe it. As always, I recommend anything Mary Elizabeth writes. She is a brilliant and exceptionally talented author. You don't want to pass up this heartwarming story that will fill you with so many emotions you will be overflowing with them.

It's been a couple days since finishing True Love Way and I'm still not over it. I refuse to read any other book for the next couple days. I just can't seem to part ways with these characters just yet. Already Dillon and Penelope have a special place in my heart.

I had no doubt in my mind that Mary
was going to blow me away with TLW. There is a reason why they call her The Realist and why she finds words in chaos. Read her books to experience what everyone's been raving about. You'll be asking yourself why it took you so long to read one of her stories.
It's a book that will make you reminisce on middle school crushes and first loves. Friendships that you've created from a very young age and that have lasted for years. And problems that we all come across from time to time.
Mary makes you feel period.
And if an author can make me feel with just a couple sentences, she has won me over for life!
Don't even get me started on her writing style. Here is just a little example of what I mean.
"She's sleep lines and pink panties."

"She's tired-wild and lifeless-living."
How about one for Mary.....

"She's honest words and realist truths."

No where near as good as she but hey I tried.

She handled a very delicate subject,
the way only I know Mary can, realistically and with so much emotion.
The struggles that Penelope goes through was so heartbreaking, I found myself crying right along with her. Mary will make you want to reach inside your tablet and hug Pen.

Dillon! Where to start with him. A beautiful soul that was always there for Penelope since the moment he met her. He goes above and beyond for her, in an honest true love way form.
He accepts Pen just the way she is.

You will feel, you will laugh, you will relate, you will tear up, you will love.
TRUE LOVE WAY
READ IT!
I've said this before and I'll say it again, I will forever read Mary's books.
Now with that being said... Mary. when are you releasing your next book? ;)

5 True Love Stars!

Wow! This was my first book by Mary Elizabeth and the writing was amazing. Again, I didn't go back to read any reviews or the book blurb and went into this one without a clue as to what was going on. This was a captivating story about true love, but it was not an easy love story.

Dillion's life changed with a moving truck, bubble gum bubbles, and the new girl next door. Only twelve years old and riding his bike, he couldn't help but to notice Penelope. He was drawn to her even at such an early age. But the feeling was mutual for Penelope. They instantly became friends. Best friends. But soon Dillion starts to notice that there is something different with Penelope.

Penelope suffers from depression. Her parents do whatever they can to try to make it easier on Penelope, but Dillion seems to make to make it better sometimes. He looks out for her, does any and everything he can for her.

As both Dillion and Penelope grow up, their friendship turns into love. I love watching this love blossom. As I mentioned, it's not an easy path they go down, but the true love and dedication Dillion has for her is beautiful.

I absolutely loved Penelope's dad. His relationship with Dillion was great. His continuous calling him "boy" made me laugh. But what I loved most was that Penelope's parents realized that Dillion was good for their daughter. They recognized that he truly cared for her. His paying Dillion in M&M's for making her smile was the best.

This was a tough book to read due to the topic. I was really afraid of the unknown with this story, but I was so sucked into this story that I had to keep reading. If you had a buddy to read this with it may help with the angst. I'm so glad a read this though. I won't forget this story anytime soon. If you haven't read this yet, I would recommend, but just know that it's not all butterflies and rainbows so be prepared for the topic.

My own exhaustion has taken a backseat to the concern and heartbreak I experience whenever I look at this girl. How helpless I am around her has made a home deep inside my gut, and I can't shake how guilty it makes me feel.

There is so much I could say about the subject matter of this book. I have read a few that deal with depression, but True Love Way offers an insight to the other side of the battle. And despite this heartbreaking and serious subject that's present throughout the entire book, I found the story to also be very sweet and heartwarming. This is a story of first and only love, of pure love, and selfless love, with sadness laced through it. This is a story about young love and small kids with big problems. This a story about counting each and every smile, hoping to God it outnumbers the tears.
This inability to control her emotions and sadness paralyzes me. All I can do is worry, wanting so badly to make her life easier and feeling guilty because I can't.
Penelope is a girl born with a genetic deficiency that causes her to be utterly and devastatingly sad sometimes. Soul-crushing, bone-deep hurt grips her sometimes and doesn't let go despite everyone's best efforts. Symptoms started showing as early as age two. By the age of five, she started hiding behind sunglasses, wanting to be invisible.
"Dillon," Penelope whispers. "Sometimes I'm so sad."
"That's okay."
The first time Dillon sees Penelope, she is moving in the house next door and they are twelve years old. He can't stop looking with puppy-dog eyes and wonderment at the girl with the sunglasses on. Penelope is equally captivated by her instant new best friend. Every morning they go to school together, they play together and they write notes across the lawn at night, staring at each other through their bedroom windows. They become inseparable and Dillon manages to make Penelope's sad better.

As the years pass by, friendship turns into a relationship. By this time, teenage hormones are added to the mix and her depression hits in full force more often than not. Dillon takes care of her as best as he can, trying to make her smile, trying to make her happy. But as she gets older, it gets harder.
She trusts me enough to let me have her love. Penelope comes to me when she needs help.
But I can't save her.
I can't make the tears stop.
Nothing I do anymore works.
It is heartbreaking to see Dillon care so much, try so hard, love so fierce, only for him to remain powerless when it comes to making her sad better. He sacrifices his own sleep to stay up with her when she can't sleep. He skips out on school to hold her while she cries sadness and pain. He dedicates his life to her, because it's what she needs, until nothing works anymore. No matter how much Dillon gives, Penelope will always keep that feeling of sorrow and nothingness deep inside her. Some days are better than others. Some days are good. And some days are just bad.
There's not a thing I want more than to disappear, but it's impossible because I'm made of nothing.
The second half was so good. There's some heartbreaking drama somewhere after the halfway point that includes boarded up windows. I understood this so well, because where some may relate to Penelope, I completely related to Dillon. I've been there, caring for someone who's just hopeless. After draining all of my energy for two years, I had to end it for my own sake. But Dillon's love transcends all in the end. It provides enough fuel to keep fighting and caring for Penelope forever. And that is why this is a heartwarming story. It's sad, but it's the true love way. Both Penelope and Dillon tried to deal with her condition as best as they could. They made a few mistakes along the way, but came out stronger for it. True Love Way had the perfect amount of humor, angst, sadness and happiness.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs a quick, but emotional read. As a reviewer though, I feel like I should list the negatives as well as the positives. I had small issues with the writing. Mary has apparently developed the habit of referring to characters by their description. Example: Sleeplessness can stay up until the sun rises. (Sleeplessness = Penelope). I'm not digging it. It's distracting and happened way too often, especially during the first half. Expressionless, Ruthlessness, Disturbance, Brightness, Thoughtfulness, etc. And their mothers were called the woman who gave me life constantly. Once or twice is cute. All the time is not. I absolutely love Mary Elizabeth as an author and her stories always seem to hit my emotional strings. I have no doubt she will only continue to grow and provide even more heart-aching, true and raw stories.

What an epic journey of young love, anguish, and one great love of a lifetime.

This book was raw and lasting. what more can I say? it blew my mind-beginning until the end.

As for Mary Elizabeth, you are very brave for writing and creating this art of love. Mental illness is such a sensitive topic and you flawlessly delivered and didn't shy away from it. you're astonishing, I'll give you that.

Five Extra Cranky Stars

Books like this don’t come along every day. You can find any number of novels written about this type of situation, to a degree, but the touch is usually feather light and gimmicky. People like to use “problems” with one character or another as a ploy to make them deeper.

This is not one of those stories.

If you want ugly truth and beautiful lies, then this is the book for you.

Pen is different. That’s all I’ll say about that. She’s as different a character as any I’ve ever read. Yet she’s exactly who we know. We've met or befriended people like Pen. We may even be her. She makes you question your knee jerk reactions to those that live as she does. In her head is chaos melting into a reality that we have all experienced in either small doses or large. You can feel wrong, right, and completely indecisive in a single paragraph in the life of Penelope.

Dillon is as easy to like as the sunrise. You want to hang out with someone like him, maybe be him, but you certainly don’t question a steadfast person like Dillon. We all know people like him too. Some of us are Dillon. He’s a rock, and everyone on the face of the planet needs one. It’s how many of us survive, one helpful Dillon in our life at a time.

The story takes two people who shouldn’t even work and makes them leap through the hurdles of life until you are sure, absolutely positively, that nothing can get worse or better.

But then it does.

If you want pretty, find another book.
If you crave easy, look elsewhere.
But if you are like me, and you want the ride of your reading life, this is the book for you.

We loved this book.

We can't wait to see more.

Bravo.

"What are you looking at, boy?"

If Mary Elizabeth writes it, I will read it. Always! Her words are beautiful and so fucking soul crushing I don’t even know how I survive. I don’t know how she does it but she ruins me for all other books every single time.

True Love Way had my emotions running rampant, I swear. The first part of the book had me giggling and wishing Wayne Finnel was a permanent fixture in my life. But as the book went on, my heart cried for Penelope and Dillon.

There were ups and there were downs. Those ups were beautiful and heartwarming, but those downs were lonely and heartbreaking. I felt like I was right there in that bed with Pen, slowly slipping into the dark depths of despair. It was both wonderful and awful at the same time, if that even makes sense at all.

I’ve become obsessed with Penelope Finnel. Purple-orange is her favorite color, even after I told her purple-orange isn’t a thing.

That boy! He was smart, beautiful, caring and he loved with his whole heart. The things he did for Pen just melted me from the inside out. I loved him lots and lots especially his beautiful, rickety heart.

"You’re my best friend." Penelope’s soft voice forces my eyes from her hands to her blue star-shaped rims. "I’m lucky to have you."

Pen! I loved her. She was so strong; strongest even at her lowest. It was extremely hard to read about her depression and anxiety. I won’t pretend I really knew how she felt, but I felt like I was feeling everything she was feeling as I read her heartbreaking story. She was just so sweet and sad and beautiful, and every single time she laughed or smiled pretty, I wanted to cry.

Just seriously, seriously this book was beautiful. I don't know how many more times I can say it. When my daughter turns 14 she is reading this book so that she knows what kind of boy to give her heart to because SERIOUSLY Dillon Decker is just so gosh damn perfect.

The words...all of them, they are so beautifully written. I just cannot even handle it. With Mary and her books, I know that every single time I am going to get my ass kicked, and I just bask in it and savor it all!!

I cannot end this review without mentioning Wayne Finnel again. That protective, funny, hairy guy just made his way into my heart forever.
"Get away from my daughter, boy."

Young true love. This book is about the journey a couple of kids have to make to get to a place where they know how to manage life the best they can.

I like the things this book showed. I liked how it displayed how a family/friends are affected due to an illness such as depression. It brought out the good the bad and the ugly. And I enjoyed going in this adventure half knowing and half wanting to learn more.

This was an unexpected sweet story!! :)

★★ ! True Love Way, stand alone. New girl Pen instantly becomes the boy next door fascination. But first love and rollerblading quickly becomes complicated sadness. This story starts and ends with a boy and a girl with an unbreakable bond.

True Love Way. Wow. This was a story about true love alright. But don't let the catchy title fool you. It's so much more, so much deeper than your regular love story. As I said, this story starts with a boy and a girl. Dillon is 12 when Penelope moves in next door. They have an instant connection even though she's the weird girl with no friends, who cover herself with shades all the time. The angst factor in this is high, it's not a bright and shiny read. But it is one of the most beautiful ones I read. I have to give credit to the author, she has truly shown that she is one of the most talented up and coming-author we have out there.

What I liked.

The love. Dillon and Pen's love was so strong and touching. They had a connection no one understood, but they didn't care, as long as they had each other. Teenage love can be complicated anyway without the struggles they had to Ent through. That's real love.

That Dillion gets one m&m for every counted smile on Penelope.

The writing. Fan's of Dusty will recognise themselves here. Mary Elizabeth's writing is as beautiful as ever, it flows, and is so easily addicting. The way she describes Pen's condition is so beautifully handled. It's spot on and oh so moving.

I’ve loved her since bubblegum bubbles and moving trucks. I love her for red heart-shaped glasses. I love her because of the way she looks flying on my handlebars.
I love her.

What I didn't like.

How different persons's were refered to. For instance, mother-the woman who gave me life, the woman who gave me hell. Dillon-the boy I love. Pen-sadness, crazy..etc etc.. You get me? All this pet names were cute for a while but after the millionth time, it really started getting annoying. Maybe tone it down a nich, huh?

The ending. the 5 epilogue were sweet and perfect.
But
WHY AM I SO BROKEN? her note reads." "You're perfect to me.

EXCERPT

Then the screen door opens and slams shut again, and standing beside the light Nazi is Penelope. Her hair is up now, and from what I can tell she’s not chewing gum anymore. Her knees are dirty, and her shoes are untied. The Discman isn’t on her hip, but her green sunglasses are still on her face, even though it’s nighttime.
Suddenly Mr. Finnel’s voice scares me out of my own head. “What are you looking at, boy?”
Definitely over six feet tall, the daughter Nazi isn’t leaning against the porch post anymore. He’s standing in front of his daughter, blocking my view of her.
I straighten my spine and speak too loudly, too quickly. “Nothing!”
He laughs at me again, but his eyebrows are more serious than ever. From behind her father’s arm, Penelope peeks out. I can’t see her eyes through her glasses, but I know she’s looking at me. I can’t stop looking at her.
Mr. Finnel’s laughter stops. “See something you like, boy? Do you think I’m cute?”
“Wha … what … no,” I stutter. My heart stops. He hates me.
Finally, she speaks, soft-spoken and small. “Don’t embarrass me, Dad. You’re so embarrassing.”
The heart Nazi puts his arm over his daughter’s shoulders and leads her down the steps to the walkway leading to the Chrysler.
“The boy next door is weird, Pen. Don’t talk to him,” he warns her with amusement in his voice. “He offered me bolts.”

I am still 100% stuck in Castle Rain with Pen and Dillon!

This story was realistic, completely genuine & the writing was so beautifully poetic. I couldn't get enough!

Every girl in high school NEEDS a Dillon! He loved Pen so fiercely even when he didn't really understand what love was yet. Everyone needs to read this book NOW!

True Love Way made me completely nostalgic but in the best way.. High school is so emotional & the experiences that Pen & Dillon went through were heartbreakingly realistic.

Everything is harder in high school, but throw in an emotional disorder that you or your family don't quite understand & you'll be completely lost. That's what Pen was, but thankfully she had Dillon there to be her beacon & guiding light!

AGH! And the writing!! Poetic, lyrical, simply wonderful... I will read ANYTHING Mary writes simply because she has such a way with words!

Small excerpt: "With every star in the sky on fire and the moon spitting white light over Castle Rain, I’m able to see Dillon looking back at me like it’s in the light of day. The only boy to ever hold my hand smiles easy and presses his palm against his window. Pretending his fingers are between mine, I press my hand against the cool glass and try to smile so he knows that I miss him. But I can’t. All I can do is cry."

While not as emotionally draining as Dusty, I loved this book. Pen has mental issues and Dillon loves her through every episode and day she won't get out of bed. If this is how a depressed person feels when they're down, then my heart goes out to them. To struggle and physically be in pain just trying to make yourself get out of bed in the morning was so sad to read. Pen and Dillon had a rough patch in their relationship and I wanted to shake them both and remind them of all they'd been through together. There's a HEA, so I'm a happy girl.

This was a very good book. It should have been a Best Seller. It was unputdownable. (Thanks to the person who came up with this word. It must have been a reader, because only readers can perceive that kind of feeling and need). I stayed up till 3 am to finish it and this says a lot for me.

This is a book about a girl suffering from anxiety and depression since she was little. Penelope is 12 yo when she moves next to Dillon. She has a Pen/fragile box, where she puts her things whenever she moves. Fragile is not just for her things. Her personality is fragile. She falls in love with Dillon. They experience everything together. Being Penelope is not easy. Her life is always difficult. She uses funny sunglasses to be invisible.

Dillon falls for Pen since the moment he sees her for the first time. He loves her unconditionally and never gives up on her. He suffers with her and protects her from her demons. As he says, he was born to love her. Always.

Penelope's laughter's a tune that's been stuck in my head for months..

They are young, they make mistakes, they hurt each other so much. But nothing in this world can keep them from loving each other. There are things in this life that were destined to be. And Penelope was meant to be with Dillon. No one and nothing can change it.

There aren't many words for the mending of two broken hearts. It's as natural as breathing.

This is not an ordinary love story. There is pain, sufferings, struggles, tears, angst. A lot of angst.

I loved Penelope's father. He would do anything just to see his little girl smile. Absolutely Everything.

The book has a "touch of darkness", but it makes it more realistic. This book shows us that real life isn't hearts and flowers. There are good days, and there are bad ones. The important thing is having someone you love near you to fight with you, fight for you, to overcome every obstacle, to help you live.

I wanted to scream some times while reading, shouting at the characters. Usually I read and prefer books who have a HEA. I'm not sure if this book has it. For some people it may be, for some others it may not.It shows the the continuity of life. It just doesn't leave you me happy in the end . Their story continues somewhere out there..

I want to write and read stories like this forever...amazing. Review to come on 4/13 with my tour post...

**FULL REVIEW**

When I signed on to this tour, I was beyond excited. After reading Dusty by The Elizabeths, I was curious about reading stories by each individual author separately...you know, to distinguish their individual style. I have yet to read another title by Sarah Elizabeth but THIS book, True Love Way, by Mary Elizabeth is flipping amazing! I really don't have the words to express my feelings when it comes to this book...but, I'm going to try to do justice to Mary's beautifully heartbreaking story of youth, sadness, and true love way.

"We love each other, right?" she whispers. It didn't make sense when my dad mentioned it before I dashed from his office, but hearing the word love from Penelope's lips makes everything seem clear. I've loved her since bubblegum bubbles and moving trucks. I lover for red heart-shaped glasses. I love her because of the way she looks flying on my handlebars. I love her."

I could get lost in the words Mary Elizabeth writes. Wait, let me rephrase. I DO get lost in her words. It's like spun literary magic that engulfs my mind and soul. I can't escape, and even if I wanted to, there would be no way. This story just seeps into you. It becomes a part of you, from the very first page. I never wanted it to end, even when it did (perfectly), I could've kept reading. Dillon & Penelope make me believe true love, no matter the hurdles, always finds a way.

Now, keep in mind. This book has sensitive subject matter that strikes at a very young age. The flow and poetic nature Mary weaves her words, makes even the most heartbreaking moments absolutely beautiful. I cried more than once and I can say this is probably one of my favorite books so far this year. I will absolutely read it again...when I need to be reminded that we are all a little crazy, and sometimes we need someone to hold us up when we can't do it on our own.

Looking forward to this! I love the sound of it!

Some days are brighter than others, but Penelope Finnel has learned she can be invisible behind the colored lenses of her heart-shaped sunglasses.

Her mind is her own worst enemy, and simply waking up in the morning is risky. For a girl like her, staying in bed is easier. Especially when the day comes to start school in a new town with new kids who don’t understand that the clouds are not the only reason everything is so gloomy.

Dillon Decker is a typical boy from a typical small town who radiates light and happiness. Under the hovering glare of her father, Dillon leads Penelope around on his bicycle’s handlebars, hoping he will be the cure to her madness.

But as time goes by and when friend turns to lover, and lover turns to caretaker, how much can either of them endure before they’re swallowed whole?

This is a story about rollerblades and moving trucks, trading candy for smiles, and passing notes across lawns.

First love and the struggle to keep it sane.

The true love way.

Epic book hangover!!! There's nothing more to say, really. I had high expectations for this one, if you've read the Dusty series, so would you. To say that I devoured each page would be an understatement. Poetic, raw, emotional and true <3 way!

TrueLuvWay

For Penelope, getting out of bed every morning is a true struggle. No one understands though. And then Dillon happens.

“Don't you get it Dillon? There's a reason why you're my only friend. Why haven't you figured this out yet?”

He's there every day, picking her clothes, brushing her hair, walking to school with her, taking every day for what it's worth. He's in charge of making her smile as much as possible - he even gets paid in candy! - and he doesn't mind one bit that he always has to see her eyes covered. He's hands down the greatest book boyfriend from the first to the last page, all the ages, all the transformations, he's the best!

trueloveway

I love the progress of the story, I loved all the tiny details that made an amazing whole; the variety of sunglasses, the window late night talks, the candy, Pen's father - possibly the best father I've read in a book and actually this book has a strong parental presence which was refreshing since most books just ship them off somewhere far far away - kinda loved that dude, every little thing!

“What are you looking at, boy?”

In a unique and familiar way, Mary Elizabeth creates the sweetest and realest story that starts from a very young age and develops with time. Poetic and raw writing that can become addictive and unique expressions the readers grow to love, this story gave me a huge book hangover, I can't even begin to list the feels, ALL THE FEELS!

Easily put, there were things I liked and disliked, areas I wanted less of and others I wanted more from.
The writing was great for the most part. I did have issues connecting and was never able to connect with the heroine.
The relationship between Dillon and Pen's dad was one I found most enjoyable. They were the only characters I had sympathy for.
I didn't always like the storyline, but I enjoyed reading the many epilogues and thought the 5th held the perfect ending.
All in all, it was an okay read. I'm a little sad that nothing came alive for me as I am a big fan of this author.

This is such a beautifully, tragic story about a love with no boundaries or conditions that spans the test of time. I started this book at midnight and immediately regretted that decision after 1 or 2 chapters knowing it would be an all-nighter type of read. I found the story and characters easy to connect to and love. Each character (main and secondary) had such a clear identity that was as unique as the writing style, and added so much to the story. My emotions were all over the place throughout the book. I laughed...a lot. I swooned...a lot. I cried... a lot.

We are introduced to the main characters as they become neighbors in early junior high. This love story has a slow progression, but the bond is immediate. I enjoyed the premise behind these two. Penelope is kind of the odd one out. Although she has the support of family, life is very hard for her and life is a daily struggle. Dillon is the boy next door that seems to get everything right and doors simply open for him. Everything for him is easy... except dealing with Penelope. Penelope has a secret. A secret that keeps her in bed for days, and out of Dillon's reach. I'm not going to discuss what is going on with Penelope even though it is a huge part of the book, because there is a little bit of mystery surrounding it in the beginning, and I don't want to ruin that part of the book for you.

I loved the reality of this book even when at times it wasn't fun to read. We often label books as real because we can relate to them. This book takes that a step further. Mary Elizabeth opens up the reality of the world that isn't so pretty. The world where the sun doesn't always shine, and there are no promises of happy endings. You just have to follow the unpredictable path this book takes you on. And unpredictable it was.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and Mary Elizabeth solidified a spot on my auto-click authors list.
