Lola Allen is a London based independent author and teacher. Her début novel The Heartless Game is her MA Creative Writing project, and a story that is very close to her heart.
"The issues raised, such as friendship, betrayal and love, are all themes that resonate deeply with me."
Lola passionately believes in creative writing as a tool to expand and educate young minds, and pushes for this in her teaching.
"I believe that words are the best weapons by which we can use to express ourselves. No matter who you are, or where you're from, everyone has a story to tell. "
Through protagonist/antagonist, Lewis’ eyes, Lola Allen gives us the short story of “Disintegration” a real-life, gritty story that reads more like memoir than fiction. Disintegration, aptly named, is beautifully written in the style of a Hemingway short story and covers a great deal of time in a small amount of pages. We are given just what we need to paint the bleak picture of Lewis’ world foreshadowed with the bad weather beginning and the ruined paperwork. Can things get any worse? Depends on your definition of worse.
In Allen’s economy of words, she manages to infuse backstory in just the right places to show you what may have caused the mindset that is Lewis, and we’re given flashes of Lewis’ chance, or maybe not-so-chance encounters that spell his inevitable downfall, as he is both the passive observer and active participant. Through it all, Allen manages to make this piece unpredictable and Lewis, not so much, as life is and we are not. Disintegration is a second-to-none short story and highly recommended.
