LOVE BETWEEN THE LINES

Romance has never had a happy ending for librarian Penny Callahan, who could write the book on cheating, heartbreaking liars. So she’s made a resolution: no men for the next twelve months. But when she finds herself checking out a hot hunk with an irresistible smile, an evening in the stacks becomes a lot more tempting…

Reclusive author Jack Williamson never should have trusted his mother. Olivia Dade grew up an undeniable nerd, prone to ignoring the world around her as she read any book she could find. Her favorites, though, were always, always romances. As an adult, she earned an M.A. in American history and worked in a variety of jobs that required the donning of actual pants: Colonial Williamsburg interpreter, high school teacher, academic tutor, and (of course) librarian. Now, however, she has finally achieved her lifelong goal of wearing pajamas all day as a hermit-like writer and enthusiastic hag. She currently lives outside Stockholm with her delightful family and their ever-burgeoning collection of books.

I loved the blurb and it sounded like it had promise but at the end I asked myself when did I bother?

So the book starts off cute. Penny is at home in her pjs and eating a cheeseburger and fries when he her friend Angie asks to take over the New Years single thing at the library.

She agrees and meets Jack. They talk and do the fun games that were planned. They have sex in the library and then Penny finds out he is one of her favorite authors. Since she was lied to in the past this doesn't sit well and kicks him out.

They don't talk for a whole month and then after seeing his dedication in his new book shows up at his house, they confess there love. The end.

Where is the romance? The suspense of what will happen? Anything? The blurb had promise but the execution of the story fell flat. In the beginning it was cute then it was like insert wrong turn here.

After reading this will I read the next book? I have to say if it was anything like this I can't. Hopefully the author will add more pages and more details to the next book.

~* BEWARE SPOILERS *~

I picked this one up because I remembered a friend of mine saying that she started to really like this series as well as Olivia Dade's writing.

Duly noted, she only read the last three books of the Lovestruck Librarians series so I didn't know what she thought about this one. BUT I don't like reading series out of order, so I decided to take a dip on Olivia Dade's writing pool by starting with this book.

Unfortunately, this book failed to amuse me on every level.

I thought Jack was rude and very judge-y. I thought Penny was uptight. The sex totally threw the book nice vibe out of whack!! I wasn't prepared for that.

Added with the whole "I love you" when they only knew each other for less than 24 hours -- in which Penny discovered that Jack lied to her about his real identity and then told him to take a hike, a too much of a reaction in my opinion since they didn't exactly been dating for years -- plus being separated for a month ...

well, my eyes rolled back SO HARD I was worried they would fall out of my socket.

Maybe the series is better with the later books. But because I'm fuming with this one at the moment, I am not going to jump on the next book anytime soon.

This was so darn cute! I want a library like Battlefield library, where they host sexy single's night with interesting and fun games. And added bonus was the male MCs Mom, Brenda. What a hoot! She was just thee best! A quick and fun read that I totally enjoyed.

Penny's New Year's Resolution is to stay away from men for a year, after enough heartbreak from cheating exes to ruin any notion of romance. Yet somehow her dreams of a quiet evening ringing in the New Year in pajamas and with a good book have been replaced by an assortment of amorous singles at her library's New Year's Eve event, looking for love or at least to ring in the New Year with a kiss. Somehow roped into the borderline shocking games with Jack, a reluctant son who accompanied his widowed mother to the event, their connection seems too good to be true. When the New Year's day hangover kicks in, will her resolution be all for naught?

What a fun premise! To take a shy, reserved librarian and make her responsible for a singles night planned by her much more adventurous (and way less reserved!) co-worker is a recipe for laughs and they abound here as Penny tries to pull the evening off without appearing to be totally out of her element. Jack is equally at odds with the whole affair too, obviously coerced into it by his mother who's on the make, and trying his best to stay out of the limelight. But his chivalrous nature shines through and he's quick to aid Penny in the icebreaker games her friend had planned, finding that something about her strikes a chord with him. I loved their banter and their attraction to each other is easy to believe. They do share some heated scenes (once the rest of the patrons have either found a partner or found a bar to drown their sorrows in) but it's trust that is the key to any relationship, and Jack hasn't been completely honest with Penny. I liked how the story evolved and Jack's patience and perseverance in trying to prove to her that he's worth breaking her resolution for. Very enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to the next in the series! 4 stars.

The library administration had objected
to her display of erotica, especially the big poster at the top. That sign had read “Spanking-New Books” and featured a flesh-colored book cover with a large handprint on it.

When reading this book, I was having a blast. Naughty things were happening in one of my most favorite places in the world. Then all of a sudden, the book makes a complete 180 on me and the amazing book turned to a confusion of emotions.

Penny Callahan has made a New Year's resolution of staying away from men. Her love life is a book filled with heartache and deception and Penny is fed up with it.

She hopes her time of staying away from men will make her understand herself better and why she keeps making such bad choices in men.

Hosting a single's night at the Library she works at was not Penny's idea on how to avoid men, but it was a way to help a friend. Penny was determined to stick to her plan, but her plan was shaken when she saw a sexy stranger at the party.

Jack Williamson is a reclusive author and wants it to stay that way. But his mother puts his secret identity in trouble by signing him up to take part in single's night in the one place where he can most likely be recognized.

Determined to blend into the background, Jack was knocked off his behind when a shy librarian has him second guessing his single life. Now he asks himself, is she worth it to tell her his secret? Or would she blab to the media and have his life in a turmoil once again?

This book was great. Penny was shy, sweet and friendly. She took over for her friend when she had to go to the hospital to sit in with her sister who is pregnant. This was a very hard thing to do for Penny since she is not good with crowds. She never knows what to say and gets tongue tied in group situations. She was holding up pretty good considering the circumstances.

I can understand why Jack lied to Penny and I also understood why Penny got angry about it. What I do not understand is the extent of Penny reaction to the deception. If they were dating for weeks or even months and she figured out the truth on her own, Yeah, fine I can understand her over the top reaction. But they only knew each other for a few hours and her reaction was not a believable one.

Let's backtrack a little. Jack convinced Penny to drop her New Year's Resolution by proving that he's not a liar nor a cheat and that he wants her for her. He told her practically everything about his life, except his job.

Penny does not like to lie. She avoids it at all cost and when she lies (which is very rare) she feels uncomfortable about it. Yet, she lied to Jack in order to have her wicked way with him. So when his little, tiny, itsy-bitsy fib was discovered, she totally blows up on him. I find that it was totally uncalled for and unfair.

After that, the book went downhill for me. Actually, it went downhill when everyone left and Penny turned into a totally new person. I'm all for going after what you want, but let's just say, I understood why guys used Penny and left.

The beginning of the book was the best part for me and I was truly disappointed when the entire novella was not written the same way. Hey, maybe some of you will enjoy the entire book. You have to read it and see.

QuickShot Review
I really liked this quick little read. I’d recently reviewed the latest in this series, but I decided to start from the beginning and I was NOT disappointed. I loved Penny and Jack and the writing was sexy and funny. Even if their romance happened at warp speed (which, hey it’s a novella), the emotional development was there and it made all the difference. Also loved seeing Clarence has been there all along, that crazy pirate. Glad I picked up this series and I definitely recommend it.

I never enjoyed the library this much

This short story is heart-wrenchingly sweet and blazing spicy hot at the same time. Penny the recluse librarian wants nothing to do with men, until a hunky accountant comes into her life on New Year’s Eve. And when slightly mysterious Jack says, “By the end of the night, I mean to convince you I’m that man. I’m the man for you” I fell in love. The chemistry between the characters sets the page on fire. But both of them have sad sweet stories that leave you rooting for that happy ending and not just steamy sex. A cast of hysterical side characters orbits around them.

This story is for book lovers and book lovers. And don’t worry, the ending is completely satisfying.

This novella is hilarious. I loved the characters, especially Jack's mom who finagles the entire situation to begin with. I was a little disappointed by the ending, or rather, what led up to it. It didn't seem all that realistic to me, but hey, I had a great time reading this novella, so it's easily overlooked. Though, I can't imagine an event like this ever happening in any of my local bookstores (or the one I work in) this is a real gem and I can't wait to read the others in the series.

You guys, I should have known this wouldn't be awesome based on the cover art of the series, but it's about librarians!! So I was holding out hope that it would surprise me! It did not. But the librarian connection is actually the only reason this has two stars instead of one.

Where to start...I guess it's the insta love thing for me. It only works sometimes, and it's not my favorite anyway. But WOW. It just wasn't set up well enough. Their characters seemed to change quite a bit very very quickly with no real reason. She goes from being super shy and against dating and feeling like she can't trust herself to doing some random hot dude in the library four hours after she met him and saying grossly cheesy things like "Jack is the man I've always wanted. The man I've been looking for. I chose well this time. I finally got it right." Suuuuure. Sure. And he's not any better. Super surly and angry and then falling in love with her because of a passage of Jane Eyre! And how gross is he when he plans to deceive her for weeks before he tells her so she will forgive him.

The plot was kind of lame, but it just wasn't believable. And I say that having read a LOT of romance books, including ones where the couple falls in love overnight. So it can be done, but maybe it's the depth of the falling that I hate. Like...maybe you just want to bone each other? That's cool. And then you fall in love later! That works. And the cheesy lines between these two made me so uncomfortable.

Not a recommendation, clearly.

My favorite part of the book was actually the most realistic when she was grossed out about having sex on the stuffed animals. Not because she's thinking it would be weird or the animals would get dirty, but because she is a librarian and knows how disgusting everything in the children's section actually is.

CONSIGLIATO!

The characters were likable and had great chemistry but this suffers because of it's length.
If the events of the initial romance were spread out over a few weeks instead of being packed in a day this would have been a lot better

I have been going through a romance fiction dry spell recently. Nothing is really impressing me much lately. I keep waiting for a romance book to sweep me off my feet but nothing is getting the job done. For a moment I thought Broken Resolutions was going to be that book. It came very close but it didn't quite make it.

I really enjoyed Broken Resolutions. It was a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be. When I first started this book I was sure I was onto a winner. I would give the first half of this book five stars without hesitation. Why? Because this book (the first half especially) is really, really funny. It's not 'have a little chuckle' funny, it's 'I have to put this down because I cannot stop laughing' funny. Seriously, the fist half really did it for me. It was simple, adorable and hilariously awkward fun.

Dade wrote this one brilliantly. Her comic timing is superb and her world building strong. I loved that she dared to take the piss out of the romance genre as a whole. It was a brave move considering that this is a romance book. She could have been seen as arrogant but it didn't come across like that.

Unfortunately, the second half of the book could not compete with the first. As the romance kicked in the humour faded away and this book lost the spark that made the first half so great. That's not to say that the second half was not good, it was. The characters were strong and the romance sweet but for me Dade was stronger when she was being funny.

What didn't help matters was that the romance was built around a lie. It made the conflict in the romance predictable. I thought it was a shame that something so fun had to be tarnished by a lie. Also, I didn't feel like Dada got the chemistry right between her characters. I couldn't feel the sparks.

Olivia Dade came so close to writing a great book with Broken Resolutions, and I so nearly loved it, but it wasn't quite there. I will definitely read more from her. With the right plot and the right characters this author is more than capable of writing a romance that can seep me off my feet.

I received a free copy of this novella from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This was my first book by Olivia Dade, I find it hard to classify this novella which may reflect my rating.

Penelope is a librarian. Her wacky, sex-mad colleague has arranged a New Year's Eve singles party at the library complete with 'Adult' themed games. At the last minute her colleague has to cry off and asks Penelope to host. Penelope has had a bad year, both of the men (not simultaneously) she dated turned out to have cheated on her - and took delight in telling her. So she has made a New Year's resolution to keep away from men until her judgement improves. Penelope is also shy and quiet in large groups - but not necessarily in a one-on-one situation.

Jack escorts his mother to the library singles evening. He is a reclusive best-selling author who shies away from publicity and tells everyone he is an accountant. Unbeknown to Jack, his mother has signed him up to the singles evening too.

As the evening is one woman short, Penelope is forced to participate, even though Jack too is an unwilling participant. As the 'games' become increasingly raunchy Jack and Penelope become attracted to one another.

Of course the path of true love never did run smooth ...

This was a quick fun read with some unexpected smexy. What rated the two star rather than three was that I found the premise that a couple could meet and fall in love in a few hours unbelievable, similarly that lying about one's career (for very good reasons) when you first meet is a deal-breaker. I can understand if they had dated for weeks and Jack had kept his true profession from Penelope but it was a few hours. I also found the juxta-positioning of Jane Eyre and bondage a little unusual.

Overall, I quite liked the novella but I found some aspects unrealistic.

There were a few typos and formatting issues which I expect will be resolved prior to release.

Penny Callahan has had a bad year with men. After being lied to and cheated on once again, she makes a New Year's resolution. No men for the next year! Now she just has to get through the singles mixer at the library where she works. When she meets a hot, hunky man that oozes sex, her night just became a little more interesting!

Jack Williamson brought his mother to the library New Year's singles mixer. He gets hoodwinked into staying by her. He doesn't want to be recognized, but she guilts him into staying. When he meets the shy, quiet librarian, he begins to question his reclusive lifestyle.

This story is a quick little romance that grabs your heart and doesn't let go! The activities they had set up at the library were pretty creative! I loved how the attraction grew between Penny and Jack and I wanted to see them get a HEA. The story flows well and the author writes with such a flair! Broken Resolutions is the first book I have read by Olivia Dade but it won't be the last! I am looking forward to the next book in the Lovestruck Librarians series as well as checking out her other works!

DNF at 48%. I liked the premise and there are parts I liked - but unfortunately there was more that didn’t work for me so I’m stopping here.

What I liked:
I liked the idea of librarian (and reader) paired with reclusive writer. I enjoyed the setting of it taking place in a library.

What I didn’t:

I didn’t appreciate the way women’s bodies were described and referenced - for example only referring to a character as Skintight Dress or describing how Penny’s body was great and she “didn’t flaunt it”. Ew.

Too much instalove - leading to coming on too much too strong. Yes, there can be instant attraction but you can’t act like you know all of what someone’s about from being in the same room with her for an hour.

I really don’t like when the central conflict is one character holding back information from another for no good reason. Nope.

All the side characters were written so flatly - as I mentioned there was Skintight Dress, Cologne Guy, Red Tie....there weren’t that many people. They could have each been more than one dumb nickname.

I’ll still be reading more of the series but this one was a miss for me.

This was a cute read, I laughed and cringed as Penny is forced out of her "comfort zone" on new years eve to host a singles mixer at her library. She is coming off two bad prior relationships and this years new years resolution is NO MEN for a year.

Jack is a celebrity author, who is more or less hiding in town. He has a 4 year old daughter from a previous marriage and they share custody. He has come to the library to "drop off his mom" who is a hoot, she is looking for a man. She also would not be upset if he found someone as well. Jack is not happy to find she signed him up as well and spends most of the first hour glaring at poor Penny. However he finds his honor when Penny is mistreated by a fellow single and finds he likes her, but he doesn't want to come clean about his identity...she is tired of liars... he is starting them off on a lie.. this will be an issue.......

It was a good book, I loved the laughs and the characters, my favorite was Jack's mother...she was hilarious!

Broken Resolutions is a cute, easy, sexy read. It reads like a novella to me, complete but condensed.

Jack is a semi-reclusive, best selling writer who is more concerned with his daughter having a press-free existence than he is about finding Ms. Right. Penelope is a shy, librarian who has sworn off men for the new year. Fortunately for both of them, Jack's frisky mom and Penelope's erotica-obsessed friend have other plans for them.

The story is done well, but because I'm inquisitive by nature, I wanted a little more meat, especially about Jack, the hero. I wanted to know more about his relationship with his ex-wife and his daughter. As for Penelope, the heroine, I wanted to read a few scenes showing her in her previous relationship. I wondered about how she interacted with that boyfriend as opposed to her interactions with Jack.

My selfish desires for more details aside, this is a nice read and a fun way to warm up on a rainy afternoon.

I received an ARC of this book, via Net Galley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I couldn't resist a librarian themed romance since, you know, that's my job too and I found BROKEN RESOLUTIONS to be a quick, cute, and easy read. It's not very long and most of the story takes place on New Years Eve; but the story still has a great pace.

I loved seeing a library shown in a fun and accurate way and I enjoyed both Jake and Penny. They have great chemistry and their insta-lust means Penny can't resist breaking her New Year's resolution before she even has a chance to start. Fun, light, and simple is the best way I can describe this book. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I’ve read this series completely out of order, starting with book 5, then book 3. Now I’ve circled back around to where it began, which also happens to be Dade’s debut. Her promise as a writer is clear but this NYE romance isn’t nearly as developed or self-assured as her current work.

Penny and Jack don’t initially seem like a match but as a NYE party at the library gets under way, a spark ignites and they pair off before the night is over. I was on board with them getting together but not with how it came about. It was way too instalove with them declaring they love each other after they’ve only spent one night together and she blew up at him so they’ve had weeks of silence. Maybe that’s how some people operate but it didn’t feel realistic to me. An HFN resolution would have made much more sense, especially since he’s a single father and she hasn’t even met his daughter yet. All that aside, it was an enjoyable enough read and I’m glad I got to see where Dade started out.

Note: this series is out of print now so if you don’t already own the ebooks, check to see if your library has it. That’s how I got to read this!

Characters: Penny is a 35 year old white librarian. Jack is a 35 year old white author. He has a 4 year old daughter named Casey. This is set in rural Maryland.

Content notes: past infidelity (FMC’s exes cheated), past divorce, past death of MMC’s father (mention), mild slut-shaming, mild kink-shaming, casual ableism around mental illness, ableist joke, on page sex, library sex, alcohol, gendered pejoratives, gender essentialist language, mention of secondary character’s sister going into labor

This book is a shocker insofaras.. the first 15% is one of the more interesting starts to a book I've read (and I've been plowing through a lot lately). Then it's all downhill!

So the first 15% is about a librarian who got stuck working a New Year's Eve Speed-dating fundraiser at the library. She meets a man who is the son of one of the library's patrons-- he got stuck attending this speed-dating event because his mother wanted to attend and the group is short by one man.He claims he's an accountant, but unbeknownst to the heroine, he's actually the reclusive author of a couple of bestsellers. So far, so good, right? It's a really interesting meet-cute.

Well it all goes downhill from there-- the pace is too rushed. They fall in love and get into a fight and break up in 12 hours. Even by Romancelandia standards, it's terribly fast, and nothing is very well developed. By the time it's resolved, you're over it. I'd love to see a Kayley Loring or RS Grey play with this concept and turn it into a much better novel. Anyhoo, the 2 stars is for the first sliver of the book-- it really was promising.

I am complete trash for romance between bookish, quirky nerds... but- the attraction between the two main characters fluctuated between awkwardness, judgement, complete desire, and love multiple times within what must have been a ten hour window, that I just found myself being annoyed.
The drama of "lying about your true identity" seemed perfectly understandable and justified and not some big betrayal. The male lead seemed most turned on by how delicate and small the librarian was. And despite her insistence that he was much too smart/handsome/interesting for her, all the men seem to flock around her. It was short though and maybe the plot of the following books in the series are more believable. But this one just did not hit the mark.

Unfortunately for the author, this book made me laugh with pity at how awful the story line is, not to mention the leading couple with the chemistry of a burnt-on-both-sides bagle.
I save the leading man's mum and the library location on Valentines day, that's it.
I tried to many times to get passed the first half of the audiobook and just couldn't because The author didn't make their story believable or truly engaging but instead it was annoying because I kept waiting for something to happen, anything really! Unfortunately I couldn't care less about the girl or guy either, or their creepy-ish thing going on. Sorry.

I was hooked at librarian/writer when reading the description, but the overall thing fell flat. I liked them both well enough but I didn’t really connect with them, didn’t really care about them. I liked the literary singles night, but was really put off by how salacious that night was. Not something I would have enjoyed when I was single.

A short romance set in a library that at first was fun to read but slowly got predictable and boring . A 3 stars read .

Broken Resolutions is a fun novella that kicks off a new series, Lovestruck Librarians. It takes place during New Year's Eve and introduces an entertaining set of characters. Since I work in a public library, I appreciated all the library references and jokes and sympathized with the characters appropriately.

Penelope (aka Penny) is a librarian in a rural Maryland branch. While her character comes across as a bit cliche at first--she's the shy, introverted librarian type--the cause of her hesitance in matters of love is soon revealed. Penny has had her heart broken in the past by not just one, but two cheating ex-boyfriends. Needless to say, she's eager to take a break from men. So she's made a New Year's resolution to give up men during the upcoming year.
It's New Year's Eve, and I'm not wearing makeup, a tight dress, or uncomfortable heels. I'm not feeling awkward in a crowd. I'm not worrying about what's going to happen at midnight. I'm not evaluating whether or not to kiss some guy I barely know. Right now I'm sitting on my couch at home, wearing my pajamas. I'm eating my burger and fries in front of the television. This is basically a dream come true for me. Please don't ruin it.

Penny, you are my spirit animal.

Jack is a successful but reclusive author. He's also a divorced dad to Casey, his four-year-old daughter. When he and his wife divorced, he wanted to keep his daughter out of the media spotlight, so he shies away from publicity whenever possible.

So when Jack's widowed mom drags him to a New Year's Eve dating program at the library, he feels duped and tricked. But he doesn't have the heart to abandon his mom there, so he stays. His attention is quickly drawn to Penny, who also takes mutual notice of Jack. As the night goes on, the two are thrown together during a series of games and activities that Penny's coworker created for the event.

I enjoyed this book so much! There's quite of bit of comedy and I highlighted dozens of lines that made me laugh, like this one:
Looks respectable enough. Then again, so do most serial killers, right before they make you put the lotion in the bucket.

The cast of characters is hilarious, especially Jack's mom, Brenda, along with Penny's friend and coworker, Angie. The next book in the series focuses on Angie and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Since this is a novella, the story moves along at a very quick pace and I got a strong sense of insta-love from Jack and Penny. I would have preferred a longer passage of time prior to declarations of love, but overall I didn't mind the fast pace too much.

There's some mild drama, but as a whole, this is a lighthearted romance that I recommend. As I mentioned, I plan on reading the next title in the series and I hope it's just as enjoyable.
