ARC Review - Beneath a Broken Wing by Yajna Ramnath.
This was a 5 star read for me, probably for about 85% of the book, I loved the build up and the twists, and the banter of the characters, but unfortunately the way some topics closer to the end of the book were portrayed just didn’t sit right with me.
Ravyn was a great FMC and she went through so much difficult things throughout her life but she still survived. Her growth was amazing through the whole story, but at some point I felt like there was some information missing where she just suddenly became someone else. There was a jump I missed somewhere.
Pokey was the best. Of all the animal familiars that could have been chosen, a hedgehog won. And he won in all aspects. I absolutely love a book with animal companions and this one was done right.
Malek was a character that I think many readers will be able to relate to. But I loved how he always had to try get answers for everything and protected what was his with his life. And how he stood up for what was right, even if it meant standing alone.
This was a true slow burn and a standalone book, however to me the spicy scene felt out of place in this specific book.

Give me an adorable neurodivergent MMC, a hedgehog familiar and a woman who has already lost almost everything, and I’m emotionally attached.
This paranormal standalone takes place in Zerra, a realm where archangels, angels, and lesser demons fled after the cleansing wars of Heaven and Hell. Ravyn has been homeless for five years after her village was destroyed, only to accidentally save Malekaiel, the most powerful Ruark, from an assassination attempt. Malekaiel smells of cedarwood and rain and their meeting sets an action-packed story into motion.
Ravyn has the cutest little familiar, Pokey the hedgehog, while Malekaiel is the most adorable MMC I encountered lately. Quote: "That sentence escaped without my permission." And let us talk about wingspan-sized beds!There are also plenty of side characters who bring personality and humour to the story, which helped balance some of the darker themes of loss, trauma, and survival.
To me the ending felt a little rushed. I wanted more tension and emotional processing before everything wrapped up. Maybe I just wanted to happily spend more time there.
Still, between the banter, the found family and the magic, this was exactly the kind of paranormal adventure that made me want to keep turning pages. I closed the book already missing Zerra and a certain little hedgehog a little.

This was a beautiful book! I was actually reading another and decided to start this on a different device while I was out one day and I just couldn’t go back to the other book like I normally would! This one grabbed all my attention.
I loved both Ravyn and Malek so much. They were so real in their struggles. Ravyn overcoming and dealing with all the many struggles she has faced in life and Malek being neurodivergent.
There was some action and betrayals (not between the mcs) to keep the story moving but over all it was just a beautiful and emotional love story within a fascinating world.

Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t working for me.
The writing felt a bit choppy, and the pacing felt off. I also struggled with how much of the story felt like it was being told to me rather than letting me experience it—it started to feel a little textbook-like, which made it difficult for me to connect with the story.
That said, Pokey is ADORABLE. 🦔🤭 A pet hedgehog?! Instant points. And Ravyn being a wisp definitely made me curious to learn more about her and her story.
I made it to about 20% before deciding to DNF. I can see some interesting ideas here, but ultimately, the writing style just wasn’t for me.

It's a thing now-- I'm definitely going to need a animal companion in every fantasy book Yajna Ramnath writes now.

I remember one day about a year ago when Yajna Ramnath said to me: I don’t think I’m any good at world building. Ladies and gentleman she is a LIAR. This book IS world building but not in an overwhelming epic fantasy kind of way. It’s relatable, emotional, and unexpected. It keeps you on your toes. It consumes you as you try to figure out what is really going on. Then there is Pokey. He’s really the star, let’s be honest. This lovable little dude is the sidekick that we all needed and the perfectly timed comedic relief.
Did I mention slow burn? Sloooooooow buuuuurn. I love tension so this made me so happy. Up until this book, Yajna was more into insta attraction but we see that she can definitely pivot.
Watching Yajna grow as a writer is the single best thing I’ve witnessed in my 4th decade of life. With every new release she somehow gets BETTER. This book is clear evidence of that. I am so so lucky to be part of her author journey.

This was such an amazing read! I loved every minute of this book, I laughed so much, teared up in a few scenes, and just overall had an incredible time reading this.
Our FMC, Rayvn has been a tough spot for years and gets no help just judgement from everyone around her. She has an AMAZING animal companion, Pokey The Hedgehog, who is just incredible and stays by her side throughout the entire time of the story. He's cute and sassy. Watching Ravyn's growth throughout the book, was such a beautiful thing to see. I was rooting for her every step of the way and I was sooo proud of her. She really comes into her own. Her story though really touched a part of me that made me feel seen.
Our MMC, Malekaiel AKA Malek, is a Neurodivergent man who I can absolutely relate to in all neurospicy ways. 😅 I LOVED HIM FOR IT. He is also very patient, kind, and understanding. I mostly like my men with all the red flags but he had none and I was swooning like a little girl. He's ADORABLE (although he would say otherwise🤣)
There were a lot of twists that I wasn't expecting and was absolutely baffled and others that I saw coming a mile away. There's secrets, betrayal, a found family, and an incredible slow burn. The celestial mythology was truly amazing and I am kinda sad that this is a standalone because I definitely want more.

I love every single thing about this book. The way the FMC survived everything life threw at her since her birth, the way even against all odds she found her way to the MMC, even if they couldn't understand their own feeling. The strenght and relisience of both characters against the obstacles they encountered was amazing. The FMC just because of what people thought she symbolize or how she looked putting her in danger over and over again, and the MMC just for been different, for see things and process things differently. I loved all the side characters (of course Pokey was the best of all with his loyalty and fierceness in such a little body). I also liked many of the side characters which also led me to be heartbroken. I won't say why because I would give a spoiler but yeah... my heart is still broke. On the other hand, I loved how another of the side characters found redemption and made things right at the end. The end was also perfect. Only thing I wish we had more of was for Ravyn to have a ride or die friend, which I thought she would found on Margot but its okay because we still have a HEA with a very satisfying ending.

I received this book as an advance copy from the author and these are my honest thoughts.
I enjoyed this book. While a little slow to start because it needed deep world building, it kept it interesting enough to continue. The characters draw you in and have terrific banter. Honestly we have the conflict from the start but it kept me guessing as to who the enemy was until almost 3/4 of the way through. An amazing story of fated love, survival, and trust, with a world developed so beautifully. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I really liked the banter and chemistry between the main characters. I found the premise of this intriguing and the world building easy to follow. I also loved that the MMC is neurodivergent. As a parent with a kid who is also neurodivergent, it’s pretty accurate. However that ending just took me out. I felt like it was anticlimactic and disappointing after all of that time leading up to it.

Beneath a Broken Wing begins with Ravyn. She has spent the past five years surviving as a Wisp. She’s living in her car, starving, and doing whatever she can to make it from one day to the next. She’s ignored, powerless, and alone.
That all changes when Ravyn throws herself between Malekaiel Soltaire and an armed assailant. Malek- who is one of the most powerful Ruarkes in Zerra. Malek takes her back with him to his home.
As Ravyn’s powers begin to awaken, Malek finds himself fighting battles on every front. There are Wisps gathering at the borders, an ancient prophecy threatening everything he knows and loves, and (because what would a good romantasy be without it) feelings for Ravyn. Just when things couldn’t get any worse, the enemy begins to close in…and it becomes clear that someone among their ranks is a traitor.
I found this story so much fun. It was fast-paced, engaging, and had a plot that felt fresh and unique. The magic system was very interesting. There was enough complexity to make it intriguing, but it was still easy to understand and follow without feeling overwhelmed by information.
I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs and the journal entries! I did have theories about where the story was going, but I definitely did not see everything coming. Looking back, there were clues that I probably should have picked up on…but hindsight is 20/20! 😂 (I hope I am not the only one that was clueless)
Ravyn was easy to root for. She’s the ultimate underdog, and you can’t help but want to see her succeed. I really enjoyed watching her discover her powers and grow into herself. She gave me some serious Isla from Lightlark vibes, which I absolutely loved.
Then there’s Malek…he is a little standoffish at first, but underneath that exterior, he is so lovable. I really enjoyed watching his character develop, especially as he helped Ravyn grow while also giving her a place where she could finally feel safe. That being said, I definitely wanted more of Malek’s POV.
But the real MVP of this book is obviously Pokey. 🦔
I loved Pokey so much, but I did feel like he deserved a bigger role. We get this whole setup about how animal companions can help with power, and I kept waiting for that to really come into play. It felt like a bit of a missed opportunity because Pokey needed his epic power moment!😂
My one critique was that some parts of the story felt very fast, almost to the point of feeling rushed. There were several sections where I found myself wishing we could slow down and spend more time with the characters and the world. Honestly, I could have easily seen this story being split into two books because there were certain parts I wanted so much more. I was expecting an epic training arc followed by a drawn-out yearning arc…and while we got pieces of both, I wanted more!
I also felt like the betrayal could have had a bigger and longer unveiling and page count. It happened, and then things moved fairly quickly toward the end. That being said, I love a good standalone, and this book definitely delivered a complete story. But by the end, I found myself wishing there was more—which is honestly a pretty good problem to have!

Beneath a Broken Wing begins with Ravyn. She has spent the past five years surviving as a Wisp. She’s living in her car, starving, and doing whatever she can to make it from one day to the next. She’s ignored, powerless, and alone.
That all changes when Ravyn throws herself between Malekaiel Soltaire and an armed assailant. Malek- who is one of the most powerful Ruarkes in Zerra. Malek takes her back with him to his home.
As Ravyn’s powers begin to awaken, Malek finds himself fighting battles on every front. There are Wisps gathering at the borders, an ancient prophecy threatening everything he knows and loves, and (because what would a good romantasy be without it) feelings for Ravyn. Just when things couldn’t get any worse, the enemy begins to close in…and it becomes clear that someone among their ranks is a traitor.
I found this story so much fun. It was fast-paced, engaging, and had a plot that felt fresh and unique. The magic system was very interesting. There was enough complexity to make it intriguing, but it was still easy to understand and follow without feeling overwhelmed by information.
I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs and the journal entries! I did have theories about where the story was going, but I definitely did not see everything coming. Looking back, there were clues that I probably should have picked up on…but hindsight is 20/20! 😂 (I hope I am not the only one that was clueless)
Ravyn was easy to root for. She’s the ultimate underdog, and you can’t help but want to see her succeed. I really enjoyed watching her discover her powers and grow into herself. She gave me some serious Isla from Lightlark vibes, which I absolutely loved.
Then there’s Malek…he is a little standoffish at first, but underneath that exterior, he is so lovable. The banter! Ravyn is genuinely funny, their interactions felt natural, and the humour never undermined the emotional moments. This book made me laugh, it made me cry, and there were moments when I didnt know where the book would take me.
The world itself was fascinating without becoming difficult to understand. I particularly loved the idea of a world fundamentally built upon sacrifice, because sacrifice ultimately became such an important part of the story itself. The wider celestial world of Heaven and Hell isn't explored in enormous depth, and if this were the beginning of a series I would have wanted more. For a standalone, though, I thought we were given enough.
The pacing also worked perfectly for me. The chapters are relatively short, giving it that dangerous "just one more chapter" quality, and despite everything being established, I never felt that the story dragged.
Some readers may find the final conflict relatively quick, and I can understand that. It could potentially have been expanded into a duology with more exploration of the wider world. But ultimately, I don't think this was ever supposed to be a story about war.
For me, this was a story about sacrifice and the power of love.
And that is where it absolutely got me.
By the end I had laughed, cried, had my heart broken and put back together again.

Well, this book got me right in the emotions! 🥹
What a ride! This was a fantasy slow-burn romance filled with humor, heartbreak, swoony moments, and plenty of surprises.
One of my favorite things about this story was Malek. Here we have the strongest, most senior Ruarke, an incredibly powerful being who also happens to be neurodivergent. I LOVED this representation! His character was fascinating, especially considering that when his emotions become too overwhelming, his powers can go full supernova. And yes, his poor tower pays the price! 😂
And can we please talk about POKEY?! 🦔 Ravyn's adorable little hedgehog familiar absolutely stole my heart! The attitude, the judgment, the personality packed into that tiny little body! I loved him! Every fantasy adventure needs a Pokey. 😂❤️
I also appreciated that Ravyn was 30. It's refreshing to have a fantasy FMC who isn't barely out of her teens. However, I did find it a little surprising that she was still a virgin. Given her circumstances—being considered a Wisp, unwanted by society, and homeless for five years—I can understand the reasoning, but it still felt like a bit of a stretch to me.
And while both main characters were chronologically older, some of their banter, relationship dynamics, and conversations with other characters felt a little YA at times.
Now, let's talk romance. This is a TRUE slow burn. If you're looking for lots of spice, you'll need to adjust your expectations. Physical intimacy takes a back seat to the emotional connection, tension, and developing relationship between Malek and Ravyn. But honestly, I enjoyed watching their relationship unfold.
And the starbond?! The fated-mates connection, the prophecy, and the secrets surrounding their pasts?! EXCUSE ME?! There is SO much to unpack there!
This story had me laughing, swooning, feeling frustrated, and genuinely heartbroken. I loved watching the characters navigate their complicated circumstances while uncovering secrets that changed everything they thought they knew.

As the story progresses, the deeper meaning behind their connection is revealed, and I was genuinely impressed by where it took the narrative.
What starts as a hidden power romantic fantasy evolves into something much bigger story about identity, prejudice, sacrifice, chosen family, destiny, and a love that transcends time.
I must also mention that Pokey the hedgehog is an icon, and I would protect him with my life.

I need to start by saying there was a lot I didn’t like about this book. I almost DNFed at the prologue, mostly because of the writing style.
Because it had several sentences in a row on their own line.
Sometimes fragmented.
Like this.
Which is fine when it happens sometimes.
For emphasis.
But it was every.
Single.

I almost would have been more okay with it if it were a narrative choice for a specific POV character, but it was like that for all POVs. Just not a fan. I didn’t like the chapters from “the enemy’s” POV. I felt they were unneeded and detracted from the twists. I disliked that the punctuation in the dialogue was often wrong (pet peeve of mine, though may or may not have gotten fixed before the final publication).
AND YET… I still somehow enjoyed the story?
Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I thought the premise was fresh and the plot was solid. It kept me engaged despite the fact that I did not like the writing style. There were a few twists, so that was fun. One of the twists I felt was revealed far too soon and lessened the impact for me. I feel like they might have been going for some dramatic irony, but it didn’t land for me. Another I thought could have been foreshadowed better? Ultimately, I liked it, but it felt like it came out of nowhere. There were definite pros and cons for this one.
Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I think the characters are really what kept me reading despite being constantly rubbed the wrong way by the writing. Malek/Kai is a wonderful MMC (and neurodivergent rep). Ravyn is an interesting, not run-of-the-mill female lead. Tough as nails because she’s had to scrape by her whole life, but caring and not bitchy (I love a bitchy FMC now and then, but sometimes I need a break, ya know?)
The side characters didn’t super stand out for me, though I did like Margot. And Pokey of course deserves an honorable mention because I have not seen a hedgehog animal sidekick before and it was wonderful.

I haven’t seen anything like this before, so that automatically earns some respect. Angels and demons created themselves a world outside of the war between heaven and hell. It’s a fantasy world but modern (they have things like jeans and cars but also use bows and swords at times…), which I tend to enjoy.

The way he takes care of Ravyn, making sure she's fed, setting up a safe space for her had me swooning so hard.

Ravyn is the only survivor of her village, which was destroyed five years ago. Since then, everything in her life has changed.
Ravyn is a kind, smart, strong and friendly girl whose life wasn't simple. A few years prior to the destruction of her village, her parents passed away, leaving her on her own. She is constantly traveling in search of a place to call home in order to survive or at least some kindness.
Malek is a powerful, neurodivergent, protective and strategic man who tries to maintain order in his city and support his people in their difficulties. All of their inquiries are always addressed by him. When he first meets Ravyn, he feels something new, but he is unable to find the answer.
From the moment they meet, their chemistry is intense and deep. Malek makes an effort to help and support Ravyn during all of her challenges.
After learning about all of her difficult years, he becomes angry and frustrated. Also, Malek is the one who reveals to Ravyn every detail of who truly she is. I was impressed by Malek's patience, empathy, understanding and support for Ravyn.
I liked how the story develops slow burn and how they are drawn to each other without realising why they are so attracted to one another.
I also liked how the author described every event and experiences that the characters had throughout the plot.
Animal familiars are playing an interesting and lovely role in the story.
Even if there are not many spicy moments, there are other aspects of the story that make it more captivating, fascinating and intriguing.
This story is incredible because of the twists which kept me on my toes and I couldn't predict any of them.
The story made me feel angry, joyful, hopeful and excited at different moments.
Overall, I loved the book and I wanted to read more about Ravyn and Malek.
Ravyn is a kind, smart, strong and friendly girl whose life wasn't simple. A few years prior to the destruction of her village, her parents passed away, leaving her on her own. She is constantly traveling in search of a place to call home in order to survive or at least some kindness.
Malek is a powerful, neurodivergent, protective and strategic man who tries to maintain order in his city and support his people in their difficulties. All of their inquiries are always addressed by him. When he first meets Ravyn, he feels something new, but he is unable to find the answer.
From the moment they meet, their chemistry is intense and deep. Malek makes an effort to help and support Ravyn during all of her challenges.

Wow, I really enjoyed myself reading this book. I found it an easy and engrossing read so much so that I finished it in a day.
It is a standalone story which on one hand I loved because while I love a series, it’s nice to have story commit and finish in one book however I also wished that this was possibly a duology because I didn’t want it to end and would have loved a little more details in some areas.
The book is written mostly in dual POV (FMC & MMC) with the addition of a third (enemy)and journal POV. Which I found engrossed me more as it created some background as well as intrigue.
I absolutely adored the FMC, Ravyn, no matter how hard life has treated her there is still a gentle and kindness to her that is soul deep. She is a survivor of circumstances and while she initially lacks confidence, it was lovely to see her grow and develop and come into herself and be stronger and more assertive.
I liked the neurodivergent representation that Malekaiel (MMC) was given. He was straightforward, direct and lacked outward emotions but not to be cruel or destructive, more as a means of being logical and effective. This book is so beautiful, there’s so much emotional woven into this story. So much heart break and pain at the beginning, watching Ravyn navigate a world alone, living for 5 years in an old car while slowly starving. It was awful to see, I just wanted someone to love her 😭😭.
I was so pleasantly surprised throughout this book, I never really saw the twists and turns coming. I never expected Ravyn to be who she was at all. As FMC’s go, I loved her so much. Even after everything she endured, she still had such a soft heart and honestly I would lay down my life for her a pokey 🥹🥹💜.
Malek! MALEK!!! Oh my dear heart. I love this man so much. It is so refreshing to see a male character represent ADHD and autism 💜 I loved his wandering mind so much. I couldn’t get enough of him and the betrayal at the end absolutely gutted me. There were so many points towards the end of this book where I truly feared the worst for him. I won’t spoil it but my heart was about to jump out of my chest.
The romance was everything. It was the best kind of slow burn with a little (massive) dash of yearning. Oh I love a man who yearns and Malek yearned for days!!!!!
I truly hope more people read this book as I need someone to fangirl with!!!

I was not prepared to love this book so much! I was hooked from the first page! The world of Zerra is desperately trying to avoid a prophecy they all fear will destroy their world if it is fulfilled. Zerra was created between the Above and Below protecting itself from the Creator and Archangels that had been unjust. They created their own beings, lands, and each land is ruled by a powerful Ruarke. Our MMC (Malek) is the most powerful Ruarke of Targos. Our FMC (Ravyn) starts out as a homeless nobody and Wisp that all other beings despise and cast aside. But things are not always as they seem.
I felt such a connection to these main characters, and I absolutely adored Ravyns animal familiar Pokey. He is the cutest, sassiest, and perfect little side character. Malek being a neurodovergent MMC dealing with a touch of autism and ADHD hit home with me, being the wife and mother of ADHD humans. I felt like I understood Malek and cared for him on whole other level. The way Ravyn cares for him. Which made me connect with her a lot more too.

This might be one of the best angel fantasies I've ever read. Yajna Ramnath has excelled in her writing; each book she produces is written gold. I adored this book; it had everything: tense scenes, heartbreaking backstories, and a hilarious familiar.
I have to start with Pokey, the absolute star of the show! Who knew a hedgehog could have so much personality and provide so much comedic value to a story!
Having the privilege of knowing about Yajna's life, I found this book particularly touching. Her strength is staggering and awe-inspiring. To not only live through hardship, but to turn it into a well-written story and share it with the world?? Incredible!! She absolutely deserves her flowers!!!
I almost imagined the book like an anime as I read, and I'd love to see it turned into either an animated or standard film. The descriptions and settings are beautifully done, but it is the characterisations that steal the show. Malek has my heart completely, and I couldn't help but think "is this play about me" as I read his personality. It's rare for me to find representation in someone of the opposite gender to me, yet Ramnath managed to make me feel seen through Maleks differences and way of thinking.
Similarly to this, I always find that Ramnaths writing and layout of her books is incredibly ND friendly. She always makes sure her book is accessible and for that alone she deserves high praise!
All in all this is a spectacular read, if you're not picking it up or adding it to your library, what are you doing???

It took me a minute to read this book but not because it didn't pull me in a swallow me whole. Sometimes when something is good you do your best to prolong its life.
The instant pull between an outcast with unfound power and the most powerful Ruarke was explosive. It wasn't the fact that she was homeless, dirty, hungry, disheveled and probably had a smell. It was her soul that pulled him to her.
Unbeknownst to him she was his forever person. Malekaiel (Malek if your Ravy) at once felt to need to protect her. He knew what he believed she was but with his analytical mind, could not compute the how.
At some point he stopped caring about the how and cared more about her.
Ravyn is the epitome of resilience. Parents. Dead. Village. Burned. Loved ones. Gone. Home. No more. Alone in a world that is too cruel to people that are different. People like her. Wandering from region to region aimlessly looking for a place of stability. Which she finds the day she saved the life of the most powerful leaders. Ravyn has endured and survived more than her fair share but when an enemy burns down her village and leaves her for dead with nothing and no one she’s forced to drift place to place to survive but being a wisp isn’t easy when she’s shunned. Her wit and strength make her such a loveable character and her selflessness is prominent even if it means leaving those she’s come to love.
Malek is a neurodivergent powerful Ruarke and doesn’t discriminate from their kind but rather their acts and wants to better things for those in the realm. He instantly shelters and cares for Ravyn and sets out to train her regardless of the prophecy promising danger with her reveal.
The romance was slow burn with the attraction sizzling throughout the book with the knowledge they’re meant to be so much more than friends and when they finally accept their feelings it’s everything. The found family with the rest of the characters in the book was nice to see especially for Ravyn who had nobody. The book was fast paced with plenty of action and a lurking enemy keeping you reading for more.

The MMC, Malek…OBSESSED with him. He is now on the list of favorite MMC’s. His character was done so well. Malek is on the spectrum and Yajna did an excellent job conveying all of his emotions and lack thereof. The way he goes from not feeling to feeling all the things with Ravyn was just beautiful. And the way he cares for her, does little things to make her feel special, ahhhhh I loved it!!!! Plus the protectiveness for her…perfection. The man literally LOST HIS SHIT because someone made her cry. 🖤

Ravyn has been a victim of this corruption for a long time, surviving on scraps, looked down on wherever she asks for help anywhere. Whisps are hated among most, which always makes her feel like she should apologize for somply existing. Until she meets Malekaiel.
I love how protective he is of her from the start, their instant pull is simply magnetic and it made this book very difficult to put down. He makes her feel seen and worthy, while she seems to understand him while most do not.
I enjoyed the worldbuilding, the cute animal familiars, the romance, and the mystery of “The Enemy”. I kept wondering who this could be, and why this person is so hateful. I absolutely loved the plot, the found family dynamics and the character growth.
