A Deviant Beginning: A Black Fantasy

Rate this book
Even with the ability to stop time, you can still run out of it.

Kathryn Henderson can teleport and stop time.

She keeps her abilities under control most days. She has to. If the government learns she’s a deviant—a person born with unusual abilities—she’ll be institutionalized or incarcerated. So, she keeps everyone at a distance, filling the loneliness with a glass of something from the bar. Or men. Or women. Anything that will replace the emptiness, but nothing ever does.

When Susan, her best and only friend, introduces her to a stranger named Charge, her world gets flipped upside down when she discovers that Susan and Charge have gifts of their own, and there’s an entire underground network of undetected deviants living freely in society. Kathryn’s brought into the fold with open arms, and she finally finds something she’s never had—a family.

But now, members of the family are disappearing. Some come back weeks later with strange scars, sutured wounds, and missing limbs, with no memory of what happened. Some don’t come back at all.

When Charge becomes the next victim, Kathryn is willing to teleport to the edge of the world to find him, but confronting the mastermind behind the kidnappings puts her life in jeopardy. And when the rescue attempt goes horribly wrong, she wonders if dying might have been a better idea.

When I saw the author advertising a Black, bisexual, 30+ fmc in an urban fantasy story that is "not a romance", I was hyped up. I could use a palate cleanser from romance and cozy, and I love a messy queer mc. Sadly, it didn't exactly live up to my expectations.

Who is it for? Fans of:
- reluctant heroine
- Sex and the City meets X-men
- training montages
- oppressed magic users having to hide and form resistance
- diverse cast
- found family

Why it didn't work for me?
I expected fast-paced, tense, action-packed urban fantasy story. But the plot of oppressed deviants (how the story calls people with magic / superpowers) and resistance against it was slowly trickled down between Kathryn meeting with friends, dating woes and joys, training montages and so forth. For a long time, Kathryn was more forced into the plot than shaping it. I'm not a big fan of the reluctant hero trope but also I didn't like how the other characters were pushy and leaving her no choice. Also I felt the dialogue had too much small talk, a lot of it was mentioning things that were obvious or mundane. And I wasn't invested either in who Kathryn sleeps with or doesn't. Props for writing a fmc who isn't sexually repressed, I just expected the spice to be plot relevant rather than "she had sex; it was great".

Overall, I expected a story that would grip me by the throat and wouldn't let go, but it was unfolding fairly slowly, which surprised me for a book which is less than 300 pages, but I guess it's because it's the first in a series and the author is holding a lot of the good stuff for later on.

I would recommend it to readers who want more character-driven than plot-driven urban fantasy with a reluctant heroine.

Thank you BookSirens and Elisabeth Roseland for the ARC.

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. Opinions are my own. Kathryn and her teleporting and time freezing abilities was just an ordinary girl trying to fit into the world while others like her were being hunted, tested on and institutionalized. Susan and Charge finally getting through to her to get her to see there is more like her and she isn't alone was such a hard task. They definitely had plans for her but they kept their motives hidden for so long I would've been just as frustrated as Kathryn. I definitely felt a way knowing Charge and Susan had some type of history and Kathryn just felt Pained but didn't ask questions about it or into it more. We understand they love each other now and whatever happened before may not count but some of it would be questionable to say the least. Elisabeth wrote her ass off with these sex scenes <3 they were perfectly timed and placed and the passion was well captured. I enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to book two as well as exploring more of Elisabeths catalog! <3

I really enjoyed A Deviant Beginning! One of the things that immediately stood out to me was getting to read a fantasy/superpowered story centered around a middle-aged Black woman. We need more of this!

Kathryn Henderson can teleport and stop time, but being a “deviant” means she has to keep her abilities hidden. She’s spent years keeping people at a distance and trying to fill the loneliness in her life, so discovering an underground community of other deviants gives her something she’s never really had before: a family and a place where she belongs.

I loved watching Kathryn find her people and begin opening herself up to the possibility of connection. The found-family aspect was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story.

And I have to give a special shout-out to Kathryn getting to explore her sexuality. She’s a middle-aged woman with desires, relationships, and a sex life, and the story doesn’t treat that as something she should have outgrown. There are definitely some spicy moments, and I appreciated seeing a woman allowed to be sexy, complicated, and unapologetically herself.

The story also brings plenty of danger and mystery as deviants begin disappearing and Kathryn finds herself determined to uncover what’s happening. I loved the combination of superpowers, found family, romance, danger, and spice.

But what really made this book special for me was the representation. A middle-aged Black woman gets to be the powerful heroine, the messy human, the romantic lead, and the sexy woman at the center of a fantasy story. That is something I absolutely want to see more of.

And I’m very happy to know Kathryn’s story isn’t over! The Deviant Time is next, and I will definitely be picking it up. I’m looking forward to seeing where Elisabeth Roseland takes Kathryn and this world next.

Thank you to Elisabeth Roseland for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you for allowing me to be an eARC reader!
Reading Deviant Beginnings felt like an introduction to Kathryn discovering who she really is and what she is truly capable of. She knows that she is a Deviant, but she is not fully aware of the extent of her abilities or what being a Deviant really means.
Kathryn has Susan and Charge by her side, but she doesn't initially realize that they are Deviants too. It isn't until they reveal who and what they really are that Kathryn begins to understand that she is not alone.
What really stood out to me was how much the story relates to the environment we live in today. The community hates Deviants simply because they are different. They are judged, feared, and treated as though they don't belong. That theme of being disliked or rejected because you are different feels very relevant to today's society.
I feel like this book does a great job introducing readers to a new fantasy world while also giving us the beginning of Kathryn's journey to discovering her true identity. She is just starting to understand herself, her abilities, and the people around her.
For me, Deviant Beginnings accomplished what an introduction to a fantasy series should do—it made me want to know what happens next. Now that the story has officially begun and the government knows who they are, what is next for Kathryn, Susan, Charge, and the rest of the group? Will they be able to protect themselves while also finding and saving others like them?
I'm definitely interested in seeing where this story goes next.

This book gave me major X-Men vibes. The government is rounding up people with special abilities, known as Deviants, and either imprisoning them or experimenting on them.

Kathryn is a college professor and a Deviant who fears being discovered after accidentally revealing her abilities in public. When her best friend, Susan, introduces her to Charge, another Deviant, Kathryn is drawn into an underground community and begins training to control her powers. She soon discovers she has multiple abilities and is far more powerful than she realized.

I really enjoyed the found-family aspect and watching Kathryn grow more confident. The characters are all 30+, making this feel like an adult fantasy novel. Kathryn is bisexual, and there is some F/F and F/M/F spice.

My main issues were the slow pacing and extensive setup, since this is the first book in a trilogy. The action doesn’t pick up until near the end, and Kathryn and Charge’s relationship felt like insta-love. She barely knows him or Susan but agrees to what she thinks is a two-week trip to California with them. Even after discovering they deceived her, she brushes it off fairly quickly.

Still, the ending has me curious about what happens next, so I’ll probably pick up book two.

Thanks to the author for gifting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is for adults, unashamedly for adults, who love a fantasy story with some erotica in it. Also, the FMC and MMC are not teenagers discovering their powers yet it’s someone older and not finding their powers yet accepting her power and learning how to use them. This book is the reminiscent of X-Men as the FMC has a new found family with underground network of people with supernatural abilities or deviants. I rather enjoyed the layout and pacing of story and character development. The FMC, Kathryn is complex and has never found her people until now and we can understand her reasoning for living a secluded life as the government and society has an adverse look on deviants.

Spice 🌶️: Elizabeth Roseland has a heavy sense of freedom on exploring sexuality. The MMC and FMC have an instant connection and there is a discovery of sexual joy and it is quite descriptive. There are bisexual and multiple partners in adult shenanigans, so check your triggers.

Thanks to the author for providing this eArc for an honest review. This is a good erotic romantasy with black characters and settings. #blackfantasy #urbanfantasy #romantasy

I really liked the premise of a diverse cast with different abilities, and I especially loved that the MC was a Black queer woman in her 30s. I also enjoyed watching Kathryn find her tribe and learn how to control her powers.

I did find some of the other characters to be a little pushy. I could sense that they had ulterior motives when it came to Kathryn, which definitely made me side-eye them a bit.

I also expected the story to be a little more fast-paced and action-packed, but the action was pretty few and far between. I felt like some events could have been pushed along a bit to help with the pacing. That said, I think the author intentionally wanted readers to take their time getting to know Kathryn and the rest of the gang, focusing more on building those relationships before moving the story forward.

With that being said, it was still a pretty good read, and I’d definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy urban fantasy with found family, diverse characters, and a character-driven reluctant hero.

I liked the whole idea of people having powers and having to hide them from the government. Kathryn was a character I really liked, and I enjoyed watching her learn more about her powers and get to know the other deviants.

The found family was probably one of my favorite parts. I liked seeing everyone come together and how close they became. There was also a good amount of action, secrets, and things happening that kept me wanting to keep reading.

I liked that the romance wasn’t the main focus. There was a lot more going on with the story and the characters, which I really enjoyed.

The ending left me wanting more. I have so many questions now and I’m going to want to see what happens in the next book.

This was a really fun read for me and I’m glad I got the chance to read it.

I liked this story. It is the first in a series so the ending is some what unsettled but it has interesting world building. I did like the way that Kathryn had to develop her powers from being about survival to reflex and a choice. Her relationship with Charge was portrayed in a ln interesting way. Yes, they have chemistry and they are attracted to each other but it seems like he doesn’t respect her boundaries at times. I was left a little wanting with more character development and depth. They all have their hidden stories and things but it felt like their character and what drives them could be more of a factor. I do look forward to reading more in this world.

So, reading this I kept thinking about X-Men, it just fit so perfectly into the whole world of X-Men. It was a short and exciting read, a lot happens in a short time and you don’t really get a sense of how much time goes by though it is mentioned a few times.

Kathryn is a strong character and she grows while learning to use her powers, her relationships with Susan and Charge seem a little bit forced in the beginning, but you get to know the characters as they get to know each other better.

This book has spice, it is not very explicitly detailed, but its a threesome described in the book, Kathryn is bisexual, so its lightly LGBTQ+

ARC REVIEW

This book definitely gives X-men/ man in black vibes. Imagine living in a world and you isolate yourself because you don’t know how to control your powers, that you are trying to hide from the world. Because the government are rounding up individuals who are classified as “deviants” and labeling them unsafe. Only to find out there are a few thousands of people right next to you who also have powers right under your nose.

Because this is a trilogy the action doesn’t pick up until the very end of the book. But the author did a great job with building the storyline with minimal adventure while still keeping us locked in.

She leaves us hanging a bit so I need book two now.

If you loved the movie “Divergent” or X-Men you will love this book.

Our FMC Kathryn has powers, but she is hiding them due to fear of the government. The government has banned and have rounded up all others like her who are different.

She quickly realizes she’s not as hard to find as she thinks. As she finds her found family. With her new clan she quickly realizes the danger she really is in

I love the training parts of the book, and of course the spice. I see we are definitely getting a part two. Excited to see this saga progress

First let me say thank you to Elisabeth for the ARC to this great book. I read this book in 2 days and absolutely loved it. I love how Kathryn evolved from a quiet, anxious and lonely young lady to a fierce, protective and loved woman. I enjoyed the magic system and how it reminded me of XMen. The side characters were great and helped move the story along. I love the MMC, Charge, and I can't wait for the 2nd book so I can read more about the Deviant Network and get to hang with the characters again.

This is an excellent series opener! The author has great pacing, well written spice, and an interesting story developing here. I still have a few questions like will this turn poly? Will the FMC learn when that significant side character did that thing for the MMC? Did the MMC rat out that crazy girl with the syringe? This was an all around satisfying read. High stakes low emotional damage. 🌶🌶🌶 with queer rep, Black leads in a diverse cast, modern day 30+ characters, X Men vibes. Looking forward to the next!

This was such a good beginning to the series .. it immediately got me hooked within the first 5 minutes . Its a story about a woman that has powers who has been hiding her powers ( people who have powers are called deviants and are taken by the government for experiments and such) . I won't reveal anymore as to not spoil but it was such a good story with characters i enjoyed.i love a story about found family and it was done so well. i did not trust all of the characters so it kept me on my toes and then I was sad it was ending but then the next one comes out in like a month I cant wait .

Hello dear readers,
Got this as an early read and boy are you in for a ride!!

Meet Kathryn, a sassy lady with a secret. She can stop time! The world is not ready for people like her so she has been hiding this power all her life. There are rumours that people with powers have been going missing.

The story was great and the world building was fun. Feels like it is heavily influenced by the X-Men series plus throw in a little spicy ^_-

Highly recommend for people who like DC and Marvel.
See you next time readers!

I enjoyed this and I feel like it was a good start to the series and set up things nicely. I don't mind spice and I knew this would have quite a bit but I feel like for me personally it pushed it slightly as it was just kinda thrown in there and it didn't feel super necessary. That being said I really like the whole magic system of this book, it's gave me a very X-men feeling. I liked the characters a lot but some of the nicknames felt a little awkward to me. All that being said I am excited to see where this series goes!

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of A Deviant Beginning from Elisabeth Roseland.

This is a story of learning to trust yourself and believe in all that you have to offer others. With the power of love and acceptance, you can be free from staying hidden in the shadows. A tale of the power of found family.

I was lucky enough to be gifted an early copy. This review is left voluntarily. I thoroughly enjoyed the book I liked the FMC. She was kind of entertaining throughout the book! The book had just enough spice. The book was different from what I’m used to reading, but I definitely liked the change of genre. If you like Black fantasy this book is definitely worth a read.

Listen…. I have not read very many fantasy, superpower, type books but this one had me HOOKED. I was locked in and staying up late to read. I normally don’t annotate but I was making notes and highlighting all through this ebook. This book made it to my re-read list, and let’s just say it’s not very many that have made it to that list. It’s worth the read for sure.

This book is phenomenal. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I love fantasy books, but sometimes I get tired of reading about 16-19 year old problems in life or death situations. I can really appreciate a grown adult with grown ass problems as a fellow grown ass adult. I can't wait for the next read.

Such a good black romantasy. Book is definitely spicy with a bit of magic. It will leave you with a cliffhanger that will make you want the second book. It gives x-men vibes. The FMC is a bad ass. She will make you mad a bit in the book because she listens to others opinions instead of trusting her gut, but overall it was a great read.

I believe if I had powers, I'll be a teleporting empath!! If you have seen the movie Push or X-Men first class, you'll enjoy this novel! The storyline was great though I'm not into insta love, which imo was one of the tropes within this and some of the writing felt choppy. Though the found family, secret organization made it all worth it! With that being said I am looking forward to seeing what happens next!

I received this book as an ARC

Synopsis: Kathryn Henderson can teleport and stop time, but when members of her underground deviant community start disappearing with strange scars and missing limbs, she risks everything to rescue Charge and confront the mastermind behind the kidnappings.

Overall I throughly enjoyed this first book in the series. You are introduced to the FMC who has to hide who she truly is until she finally finds others like her. If you like the X-men then this book is for you! It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know more and why this FMC is so special but of course we are left with a cliffhanger. I’m definitely looking forward to read book 2!
