#1 BESTSELLER - BASTARD

My name is Carter Reynolds. I was born a bastard and I’ll die a bastard. I learnt it at a young age, and nothing and nobody can change that. I’m on a one-way path of destruction, and god help anyone who gets in my way. I hate my life. Actually, I hate pretty much everything.

That’s until I meet the kid next door. Indi-freakin’-ana. My dislike for her is instant. From the moment I lay eyes on her, she ignites something within me. She makes me feel things I thought I was incapable of feeling. I don’t like it, not one bit. When she looks at me with her big, beautiful, haunting, green eyes, it’s like she can see into the depths of my soul. It freaks me the hell out. She’s like sunshine and rainbows in my world of gloom and doom. I hate sunshine and rainbows.

********

I’m Indiana Montgomery, my friends call me Indi. Despite losing my mum at the age of six, I have a wonderful life and great friends. My dad more than makes up for the fact that I only have one parent. I’m his little girl, the centre of his world. I adore him.

When Carter Reynolds moves in next door, my life takes a turn for the worse. He’s gorgeous—sinfully hot, but that’s where my compliments end. He seems hell bent on making my life miserable. He acts tough, but when I look into his eyes I don’t see it. I see hurt and pain. To me, he seems lost.

I should hate him for the way he treats me, but surprisingly I don’t. If anything, I feel sorry for him. I want to help him find peace. Help him find the light that I know is buried somewhere within his darkness, but, he won’t have a bar of it.

He’s warned me time and time again to stay away, but I can’t. I’m drawn to him for some reason. He’s always referring to himself as a bastard. That may be true, but to me, he’s more like a beautifully, misunderstood bastard. Whether he likes it or not, I refuse to give up on him.

Well,I've got to admit to being a total cover slut,I saw the title and cover and I was sold .....

The story opens with Carter being taken by his single mother to meet his grandparents at the age of five.
The door is slammed in their faces with one word being said to him Bastard.....

When he understands what the word means he feels totally worthless.

His mother marries when he is 17 to a complete dickhead and they move to Sydney to live with him.
Said,dickhead does nothing for his self esteem and treats him like shit.But he adores his mother and will do anything to make her happy so keeps quite

As soon as he arrives in his new neighbourhood a girl catches his eye...Indi.But Carter has a plan.As soon as he's 18,he's leaving Sydney and not looking back.
He tries to be a Bastard and push her away but they develop a love/hate relationship.
When he thinks he's getting too close he decides to leave...

Fast forward 5 years and Carter has to return home due to the death of his stepfather...

I don't want to go into the story too much more here.
There's drama but most of the second half was predictable.I could totally see what was coming and I just got bored and started skimming....
Maybe it's my fault, but I just expected more of a gritty story.

Overall a sweet,sexy story..if that's your thing I would recommend this......

I LAUGHED, I CRIED, I SWOONED.

I loved loved crazy loved this, yes Carer was a bastard but as the years progressed you see another side to him and you fully understand why he was the way he was, some times I couldn't justify his behaviour but needless to say that didn't take away the enjoyment of reading this..With everyone calling Carter a bastard he got in that mindset that that's what he was, an unloveable bastard, to love only gets you hurt, so by pushing people away they never got close to him until Indi came into his life and turned it all upside down..

*´¨✫ This is my first time reading something by this author *´¨✫

THEN ~ 5 YEARS OLD

Carter's Grandfather was initially the first person to tell his daughter to never bring that bastard around to his house again..Not understanding what Bastard meant never the less that word left its mark on him..

I was only five years old the day I learnt I was a bastard, and sadly as the years progressed, that’s exactly what I became.

NOW ~ EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD

The story starts off with Carter packing up his belongings from the apartment him and his mum have lived all his life, she's newly married and they are moving in with fuckwit as Carter so appropriately calls him..

“I love your mother,” he told me. “But don’t think for a minute that any of that affection extends to you, because it doesn’t. In my eyes, you’re the unwelcomed part of the package.”

So yes Carter calling him a fuckwit is very fitting..

He acts so sweet in front of my mum. She falls for his pathetic shit all the time. Truth is, he’s a fake-arse prick.

I'm happy to have your mother living here for free, but you need to earn your keep. I’m not supporting some bastard child that isn’t even mine.

No wonder Carter acts like a bastard when he's told he's one constantly..isn't it anyone he's the way he is..

My father never wanted me, my grandfather rejected me, and my stepfather hates me with a passion.

Really easy to get into, he's an arrogant asshole dropkick bastard and she's not a princess where she stands there and takes the shit he dishes out to her, so expect a hell of a lot of swearing..Which is what you'd expect from a bastard lol

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Because Carter is a Bastard the first interaction between these two went as you'd expect..

I love that my antics get under her skin. I also admire the fact she gives as good as she gets.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I've got this love/hate relationship going on with the girl next door.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After the day I found out the true meaning of what a bastard was, I started to act out. The older I got, the worse my attitude became.

As things slowly progress with these two from friends to lovers Carter does the unthinkable and without saying a word to anyone packs his bag and takes off..

I was born a bastard and I'll die a bastard.

FIVE YEARS LATER ~ TWENTY THREE YEARS OLD

One phone call from his mother changes everything, he has to go back to where he left his heart, he hasn't been back there in five heart breaking years..

He’s come so far in the last five years. He’s nothing like the troubled teen I knew all those years ago.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This grown up Bastard aka Carter will have you claiming him as your book boyfriend, he's nothing like that arrogant bastard we saw previous in the book, this older, better version of Carter is by no means a bastard, he's like a bottle of red wine that's been left to age, he's come back, all man!!

This book is the bitter sweet story of Carter and Indiana.

Carter never knew his father. He left his mother when she became pregnant. Apart from the feeling of “being unwanted” by his own father, his grandfather also contributed to his low self-esteem by refusing to accept him as his grandson. When his mother took him to meet his grandparents at the age of 5, they were not welcome at all. Carter, being a 5 year old child, never forgot what his grandfather told his mother at the door:

“Why did you bring that little bastard here?”

He didn’t know what that word meant, then. But, instead of being hugged and loved, he understood that he was refused and not wanted. Later, he also learnt why he was refused when he found out what his grandfather meant by the word “bastard”:

bas·tard
1. Offensive A person born to parents not married to each other.
2. Slang a. A person considered to be mean or contemptible. b. A person, especially one considered to be unfortunate.
3. Something that is of irregular, inferior, or dubious origin.

When he understood the meaning of that word, all his world and how he saw himself changed. He let that one stupid word change him and define him. He was only five years old the day he learnt he was a “bastard”, and sadly as the years progressed, that’s exactly what he became.

“After the day I found out the true meaning of what a bastard was, I started to act out. The older I got, the worse my attitude became."

Carter never thought he was worthy of love. He also didn’t want to love anyone because he was afraid of loving and then being hurt. There was only one person he loved and valued on the face of the earth and that person was his mother because she loved the bastard that nobody else could.

But then, at the age of 17, something he never expected happened. He met Indiana. Beautiful, caring and loving sassy girl who adored him although he acted as a real “bastard” towards her.

Carter never had any friends before. He didn’t let anyone come near him and he wasn’t used to being loved and accepted. As for the girls, he only used them for sex, never dated anyone before.

So, when Indiana’s father, Ross treated him like a real father, and when Indiana gave him her heart and soul, all his balance was shaken. He tried to resist the temptation but Indiana was hard to resist. He hated that she made him feel things he didn’t want to feel. He had developed a defence mechanism over the years and learnt that he wouldn’t hurt if he didn’t feel.

“Fuck her and her sunshine and rainbows. Fuck her and her light that’s trying to penetrate my darkness. I don’t need it, and I sure as hell don’t want it.”

Whether he wanted or not, Carter was drawn to her. But he also thought Indiana deserved someone a lot better than him.

Indiana, on the other hand, fell hard for him. She was pissed at him because he was annoying her all the time but he had also a sweet side that she saw.

"Technically he may be a bastard, but to me he's a beautiful, kind, sweet, caring, incredibly loyal, and lovable bastard."

And then there was this undeniable attraction between them:

"Together we're magic. We were fucking made for each other. There's no denying it."

But when they eventually got really close, Carter made the biggest mistake of his life. He did what he thought was best for her and he left.

“I don’t want to cloud her sunshine with my darkness. She’s pure and I’m not.”

While trying to do what is best for her, he broke her heart into a million pieces and he drove away from the only person that would always have his heart.

“I think I’ll always regret walking away from her, but I did what I thought was best. For her.”

5 years later, he needed a second chance with her because he had now grown up, lost his anger towards the world and understood that denying his heart was wrong. He was never able to fill the hole in his heart, which belonged to Indiana.

“She owns my heart and my soul. She's my air. I'm nothing without her.”

Now, after 5 years and finally having moved on, will Indiana give him a second chance?

If she does, will life and fate give them a second chance?

Don’t let the title of this book mislead you because it took me by total surprise. What I expected and what I found were quite different and I couldn’t be happier.

It is not a dirty book as the name suggests, instead it is a beautifully written very hot, very emotional and a very sweet story with a touch of drama. It conveys the highest of all emotions, love, lust, hurt, pain, anger, resentment, regret, sexual tension, angst... And the writing is so successful that you feel them to your core.

It is a bit long and slow-paced story with 427 pages but it is beautifully written and all the feelings pass to the reader. The book touched my heart at each page and I loved both the hero, Carter, and the heroine, Indiana dearly. They were amazing characters. Their chemistry was scorching.

The story is told by dual point of view and we learn both Carter’s and Indiana’s thoughts and feelings. The way they tell their story keeps you interested all the time. I was hooked from the very beginning.

Their funny inner monologues or the sweet banter between them made me smile. Their genuine love warmed my heart. Their pain caused a lump in my throat. Their high chemistry burnt the pages.

This book –especially because of the way it is written – made me feel all sorts of emotions...

“So is this...” he adds, pulling my pink vibrator out of his back pocket. Fucking hell. I’d forgotten that was in there.
“Give me that,” I snap as I lunge towards him, but he’s too quick. He raises his arm, holding it high in the air so I can’t reach. When I jump to try and grab it, he starts laughing.
“Carter,” I whine. “Give it to me.”
“Sorry, beautiful. I can’t do that. From this day forward, I forbid you to use it without my permission. If you want to get off by a toy,” he says waving it in my face, “then I’m gonna watch.”
Forbid me my arse. Who the hell does he think he is? “You can’t forbid me to do shit,” I retort, folding my arms across my chest.
“I hate to break it to you, sweetheart, but you’re mine now. So, I can, I will, and I just did.” He places his finger gently on the tip of my nose, so I swat it away.
“You’re an arse,” I retort, but the "mine" comment he made is not lost on me. I’m smiling on the inside.
“I know, but I’m your arse,” he says pulling me into his arms, covering my mouth with his.

I can recommend this book to all romance lovers who love their romance with high steam...

It isn't hard to fall in love with this book. This is exactly what in my opinion is included in the new adult genre.

***Quick Review:***

Series: Stand alone.
Grade/Tag Tabs: New Adult.
Main characters: Carter Reynolds and Indiana Montgomery. We get to know the characters during several years.
Secondary characters: This book has some secondary characters, but mainly rotates with the main heroes.
Steamy:
Sensitive topic:
Love triangle:
Cheating:
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

For who I would recommend? If you like emotional book of the new adult genre it for you.

***

About the plot: We meet Carter Reynolds when he is five years old and for the first time heard the cruel words about himself - bastard. The feeling of rejection defines his whole life and he starts to behave as was called.

At the age of seventeen, his mother is getting married. Someone would have thought that this will give them a chance for a new family. They move into a new home and a good neighborhood. But his new stepfather, isn't greets him warmly in his home. When Carter's mother is no around he insults and humiliates him. He does not want to destroy his mother happiness so bites his teeth and wait for the day when he will be able to leave. That what is not in the plan, is to fall in love with his neighbor Indiana Montgomery.

Fuck her and her sunshine and rainbows. Fuck her and her light that’s trying to penetrate my darkness. I don’t need it, and I sure as hell don’t want it.

He learned early that when he can't feel, he can't hurt. That is why he givies a hard time for her. But in return he gets just as much as he gives. What's worse her attitude only turned him on. They become friends, but his sense that he isn't good enough and fear of another rejection forcing him to make a decision about leaving. He leaves her without a word after the events that break her heart for long years.

Five years later ... after the phone from Carter's mother, he is forces to return home. Of course, he sees Indiana again and she is full-grown woman, even more spectacular than before. She finally moved forward. And when she sees he is back, isn't sure whether she feels more hurt or lucky.

I think I’ll always regret walking away from her, but I did what I thought was best. For her.

Will he be able to leave her again? Or need wake up call to reach for the only woman he ever loved and fight for their happy ending?

Final thoughts: Like I say it's not hard to fall in love... We can get in here right in the characters, get to know their feelings, understand them - alternate pov, gives us a good perspective on everything that happens on both sides.

We get to know them over the years. That's what surprised me, is that I've been waiting mainly on the second part, where they will be older and will have a second chance at love. But it turned out that compared to the first which was incredibly good, the second a little disappointed. But when you're able to get to know the characters so well, you are still reading because you want to eventually a happy ending and good moments for them.

It is probably too simple and predictable, but it may depends on how many books you read with a similar topic. Anyway very positive, sweet and pleasant reading.

**2,5 stars**

It's pretty rare to find a book with a beginning, a middle and an end. That's one of the things i liked about this one... It was like reading a detailed guide throughout the MCs whole life, especially Carter's, which was pretty interesting.

So, like I said this book was planned out well and the first half was pretty damn good. I loved the first 50%, up until then i thought i had a 5-star read in my hands, but it all went downhill after that part for me.

Okay, maybe i should explain...

The book starts with a very touching scene, when Carter was a five year old kid and was visiting his grandparents for the very first time with his mother. His grandfather kicked his mother out when she was pregnant with him because he couldn't accept the fact that his daughter was about to give birth to a bastard child (his father left his mother as soon as he found out that she was pregnant).

Of course five year old Carter didn't know any of that, so when his grandfather opens the door and hears the word bastard for the very first time everything changes for him. He looks it up in the dictionary and and from thereon he embraces the word and so begins a journey of low self-esteem and rebellion for him.

Years later, when he is seventeen his mother marries another guy and they move to his house in Sydney. His mother's new husband, aka Fuckwit, treats him like shit but he puts up with it because he loves his mother and because she's happy with him. The plan is to move out of Fuckwit's house as soon as he turns eighteen. And then he meets his neighbor, Indiana. He doesn't want to like her, but he secretly does, and so starts their love/hate relationship.

Carter refuses to deviate from his plan to leave Sydney, even though things with Indi are good, and so he leaves without saying goodbye. So far so good...

Part II of the book is five years later after he left Sydney and Indi. I tried, i really tried to like it but i couldn't... it was so effing boring! It was like reading a different book and I was skimming through the pages hoping that it would get better... See, Carter now has his own business, Indi has a new boyfriend and Fuckwit is dead so Carter has to go back to Sydney for the funeral and to take care of his mother.

I don't want to say what happens next because i'd be a spoiler bitch!! All i can say is that the book becomes some kind of goody-goody fairytale somehow, with a few bumps in the road of course.

So to conclude:

Part I (40%) : 4-5 stars
Part II (30%) : 3 stars
Part II (30%) : 1 star

Total : 2.5-3 stars

Perfection is an understatement.. <3

Dark.

Steamy

Gorgeous.

Hot.

Emotional.

Tear jerking.

Hilarious.

Sweet.

Fucking hell my emotions today have gone out the window... this book, this fucking book has completely undone any sane fibre that I didn't really have prior to knowing how it will end. I seriously cannot deal with this emotional drainage... Ugh. So damn perfect!!!

Ever read a book that swallowed both your heart and soul? A book that had you wanting to throw your kindle at the wall but hug it at the same time? Or even make you laugh and blush with a sinful mind but have tears streaming down your face as well?

People I give you THAT book - Bastard by J L Perry!

It took everything in my NOT to have to strangle every person or email, or message, that interrupted me while I was in the world of Carter + Indi.

Sheer Perfection and CONGRATULATIONS J L Perry for creating such a gorgeously sexy and heartbreaking masterpiece.

Simple put, the girl next door meets the boy next door who in one word can be described as a "bastard". From the very first moment that that word, bastard, was uttered into the young boys ears, I just wanted to have been the one to hug him and tell him that he should erase that word from his mind and life. I just wish I could have done something to prevent Carter from turning to becoming in every sense of the word.. something that most might hate, but nobody really knows the true story until they try even a little bit, and have a look in his eyes. And that's were Indi comes in..

Without wanting to spoil anything, I'll just let you know that heartbreak, tears (ALOT of tears - make sure you have a box of tissues), anger, lust and above all, LOVE and so damn much of it - will be shed for this unbelievably masterful story.

I think this book has officially taken a spot in my All Time Favourite books that I will treasure till the day I take my last breath. Honestly. I'm not even going to be angry at the author for playing such a rollercoaster ride with my emotions.

Thank you J L Perry for creating a reader who is now a crying but smiling idiot of a mess. My heart literally goes out to you and to Carter with his 'bastard' heart and soul, and to Indi with a heart of gold. I could only ever with to be that strong or to have the ability to create a beautiful but sexy as hell story.

You will go A LONG way and until every human reads this book? They wouldn't know true love or a perfect somewhat tainted soul that is Carter until they read BASTARD!

This one didn't really work for me. See, when I read about an alpha male that's what I expect to get - one that protects and loves his woman above all else. Carter sadly wasn't that, instead I got an alpha wanna-be. Why? Because no self-respecting alpha walks away from his "one" for 5 years and is too much of a dribble to contact her again except by happenstance. Instead he mans the hell up, rights what he needs to and gets his girl.

I totally didn't believe in his miraculous change of mind, heart and circumstance the time he was away. My eyes are bruised from rolling them.

The book dragged on for way, way too long to the point I skimmed a lot.

Be Warned That My Rating/Review is a Minority, so if you stumble across here proceed with caution

This Review has spoilers!

I gave this book one star simply for the amazing cover and blurb, other than that I want my time back. The only reason this was not a DNF is because I was already half way in when the novel went ahead and made a WTF turn.

Let me explain...

Having read the blurb, I was expecting a male lead who's a lovable asshole but with good reason (like being labelled a bastard whole life and having a non-accepting father) who hurts the sweet girl repeatedly only to realize it too late and then grovels like his ass is on fire.

But NO, we end up with a hero who in the first half is a selfish prick who let's one incident of being called a bastard () define his whole life.

Oh woe is me because my grandpa does not support me and my mother when he's rich. There's no denying that grandpa dearest was an asshole but...

1. What about your own damn father? Like what about the 5 Ws and 1 H? If I was Carter I would be more upset with the lack of my own father rather than dwelling on my mother's father's somewhat understandable disappointment about a teen pregnancy.

2. I am a firm believer that a child's responsibility resides solely on the parents shoulders not a child's grandparents and to expect otherwise when you were not responsible enough to have safe sex is plain ole selfish. Very few and fortunate children may have parents who'd support their children becoming single teen parents.

Having said that I honestly didn't think Carter had enough reasons to be a selfish dick.

But I was still hoping till Part II the author would prove me wrong and show us something integral happening in Carter's life that made him the way he is BUT...NOPE!

What we get is Carter leaving Indianna right after

Okay fine, I like second chance romances too, and the big reveal might still happen.

But what we get is a wishy washy Carter= I love her...But do I want to stay with her?

And a dumb twit of an Indianna= Oh I care about Mike/Mark, he's safe, he'll never hurt me, he'll never leave me like Carter. OVERUSED OM plot device, what about a unique and healthy dose of a deserving OM competition? What about a woman who doesn't settle for less because the supposed love of her life did a number on her. You would think having one selfish ex(?) would be enough motivation to find a man ten times better than your last.

Moreover,

We still don't know about Carter's sperm donor situation.

And by then I was loosing my interest too...

Skim...Baby Daddy...Where are thou...skim...skim...Cancer... skim...wait what!......What Next?...Baby drama?...prove me wrong...PROVE...ME...WRONG!

PS- Let's not forget the overuse of phrases every other page I love him because he cares, I love him because he gives a shit, I love her because...yeah yeah I get it, get a move on now please.

Conclusion(?)-->This book was totally angst/drama less that such a title/blurb deserved.

"You don't like your food?"
"Of course.Why would you ask that?"
"Because you look like you'd rather be eating me instead."

This was a nice reading!
I liked the story and Carter&Indianna together were really good.
Even in the beginning he wasn't so bad(I mean I didn't mind him)and
Indi was what he needed when he was being a "BASTARD".
The girl had SASS...And also a soft spot for his charm...;)

They had some hot scenes...but they also were cute together.
The only thing that bothered me a little is that it was a looong story
and many things happened.It wasn't fast paced but the author
gave us too many details in every scene and we watch them as years go by.It took me a few days to finish the book.

But it was a nice story without to much drama and Carter was really
sweet the second time they meet.He did some good staff(like really GOOD staff) to prove his love.

Enjoy!xxx

This was different from what I was expecting but I loved it. I loved the dynamic between the two main characters. Carter was anything but a real bastard in the story. His façade was firmly in place but you could feel his desperation to be wanted and loved.
This book was different from your usual love/hate relationship. This story was heartwarming and sexy. I had a blast reading it.
I expected something edgier but in the end I loved the way the story unfolded. Great read.
4 Stars.

DNF - 61%

The first thing I have to say is that if you are easily offended by sexual encounters between two underage characters then this definitely isn't the book for you...

description

Moving on I have to tell you why I decided to DNF this one. It wasn't the bad writing or unappealing story line...it was the immaturity of the characters even as the year have passed (wiser-with-time did not apply to them) and the boring sentiment this book bestowed on me...

description

I know a lot of my friends loved this one...but it just wasn't for me...

2.5/3 Stars

This is the story of Carter Reynolds who has let the label “Bastard” define him since he was five. I’ll be honest, while I felt bad for Carter at times I also felt that he contributed to his own hardships in the first part of the story so my sympathies were limited. In some ways, Indiana Montgomery is an amazing person because she believes in him when he doesn’t. She’s a pretty likable heroine—strong and doesn’t take his crap. Her backbone, their chemistry, and the dynamics between them in the beginning helped keep me reading when I was otherwise ready to bail on the story.

There were two main issues that kept me from closing this book with a good feeling. Initially, it was all the references to the H with OW in the first half, and then it was the depressing nature of the second half. While the blurb describes Indie as “sunshine and rainbows in my world of gloom and doom,” that’s a little misleading given the direction the plot eventually takes.

Overall, this is a book for angst lovers, which admittedly I’m not. I found that every time Indie and Carter seemed to be getting on track and their romance was developing, the flames were doused with some kind of hardship that varied from things that could totally been avoided to things that mimicked a plot on daytime TV. As a result, by a certain point I was losing interest.

The rating was difficult to settle on because this is probably one of those rollercoaster of emotions book. So I’ll explain by saying that it was a 3 stars read for me because the characters had a lot of potential and the story ends on a very positive note with an epilogue. But in significant parts it was 2.5 stars read because their relationship in the beginning was not exclusive and because of the depressing subject matter in the later half. I don’t enjoy books that drag me down; I look for reads that are a pleasant escape and while it ends well, there was just too much angst for my tastes.

Told via Carter and Indie’s alternating first person point of view, Bastard is a stand-alone, no cliffhanger, HEA.

I give Bastard 4.5 sucker for a redeemable hero stars. I think what initially drew me to this read was the title because it is really in your face which I love. When I read the overview I thought, "This is so something I would read!" I'm glad I read it and think J.L. Perry did extremely well with the writing, content, and plotting in order to ensure the story didn't move too slowly or quickly. I also liked that the characters actually took shape, grew, and matured throughout the novel because one dimensional characters bore me.

Carter has a rough childhood in that his mother struggled to support both of them and was called a bastard to his face as a young child. He was unwanted by his father and grandparents, from his knowledge, which further led to his feeling of worthlessness. When his mother marries a man less than lovely towards Carter, Carter moves into a different neighborhood where he meets Indiana and Indiana's father Ross. Carter quickly bonds with Ross and struggles with attraction to Indiana.

Indiana has pretty much grown up without a mother but hasn't let the world break her. She's grateful for what and who she has. She's a good girl and is, in theory, the complete opposite of Carter. That doesn't stop her from being attracted to him. She can't seem to get away from him even though he calls her kid and acts like a complete jerk most of the time.

The story moves from their first falling from crush to love as teenagers until they are adults. The two don't have contact for five years until a misfortune forces Carter to come home. Indiana's all grown up and has "moved on" from Carter and wants nothing to do with him but then why does her heart feel as though it is beating out of her chest? The two must decide if what they had was in the past or if they never actually got over one another.

Overall, I was pretty hooked after the first two chapters. I couldn't help but laugh at how obnoxious Carter acted even when he obviously had a really good heart. I also could't laugh how Indiana had an actual backbone and would call Carter on his crap. The two were great characters on their own and even better together. This story is the kind of story that reminds you how great love can be and how people hide behind masks waiting for someone to look beyond said mask.

This book took me by total surprise and a pretty good one at that! What I expected and what I got were quite different. Of course, the blatant title and the seductive cover first caught my attention, and then the blurb intrigued me into one-clicking. This is the first time I’ve read a book by J. L. Perry, but I don’t think it will be my last one.

bastard; noun

1) a person born of parents not married to each other
2) an unpleasant or despicable person

When Carter hears his grandfather call him a “bastard” at a very young age, it makes a lasting impression on him – one that he has a difficult time putting aside. It takes meeting someone really special to teach him that his life isn’t defined by that ugly word. Indiana (Indi) digs her way into Carter’s heart and he doesn’t think he deserves her. So, par for the course, he leaves home the minute he turns eighteen and doesn’t return for five years when a family tragedy occurs.

Of course, things have changed with the girl next door and Indi has moved on with her life. When Carter sees her again, it only confirms his feelings that she’s his “one and only.” But will Carter get his second chance at a happily-ever-after with Indiana?

There will be a lot of challenges ahead for these two – both good and bad. It’s a angst-filled story with a good balance of witty banter and tender and emotional interaction, too. I loved the relationship between these two – even when it wasn’t the best of times.

Carter Reynolds has a rough beginning. He carries a lot of responsibility for his age and the world continues to crap on him. His mother marries and they move next door to the girl (Indiana) and her father (Ross) both who will end up changing his life by showing him love.

I enjoyed the beginning, but felt like it wasn’t long enough. I needed more of Carter’s bastard ways to really buy into it. The author sold the backstory really well and it justified Carter’s bastardy, there just wasn’t enough of it. Carter ended up being sweet for about 75 percent of the book which negates the title.

A couple of spoilers below:

I didn’t buy into Indi’s sickness or the boyfriend. I don’t know, but they felt like props to me. The boyfriend was a convenience of conflict and the sickness didn’t feel right. I wanted more from something that traumatic.

The epilogue was beautiful. Ross asking Carter to call him Dad. Ohhhh that pulled on my heart.

Overall, I enjoyed the beginning and the epilogue. The middle was okay, but Carter’s roughness wasn’t long enough for me to buy into the total sweetheart transformation.

I was unfamiliar with JL Perry's work prior to her asking me to beta read Bastard, being a standalone I was eager to dive in. Carter Reynolds learnt early on he was a "bastard" never knowing his father and being shunned by his mother's family, he had poor examples for the way a man should behave, while his mother loved and doted on him, Carter found himself having to grow up far too fast, taking on the some of the financial burden of providing for their home forced him into situations that would impact his life in ways he couldn't possibly comprehend. Where Carter was once a sweet and loving boy, he'd grown into a arrogant young adult, he's rude and stand offish, closed off and argumentative, he struggles to accept kindness from strangers and expects nothing but contempt from those around him, he's never known kindness from anyone other than his mother and when confronted with it is unsure how to act.

Indiana Montgomery has had an almost perfect life, even with losing her mother at a young age, she's had the perfect loving family home, her father is her hero, and she's never gone a day without knowing that she's loved and wanted, she's loving and caring, young and full of life, she's known great pain and loss and yet she hasn't allowed that to break her spirit or turn her bitter to all the joy life can bring. Carter and Indiana have both been forced to grow up quickly but that is where the similarities end, where Carter is determined to see nothing but bleakness, anger and pain, Indiana see's the good and the hope in the people around her, when the two start to just be, away from the forced bravado and scowls, and nasty baited words, these two find a connection deeper than either expected.

Bastard's prologue quickly intrigued me, Carter's voice always ringing true, first as a child and then later as a young adult, his voice was always clearly reflective of his age as Bastard progressed, it never felt stilted or forced. Carter was at times everything the title implied, and while I understood where his aggression came from there were times it felt unjustified, there were moments where I struggled to reconcile the man I knew he could be with the prattish behaviour and mean slurs he was throwing out, there were times that I wanted to crawl inside the pages and slap him around, I wanted to tell him to grow up and stop acting like a petulant child, but there is lies talent in an author, to bring about that kind of visceral reaction to their characters means they grabbed you, it means you're invested enough to want to effect change in their characters lives.

Bastard is an addictive read, I found myself quickly invested and desperate to know more, as much as I wanted to punch Carter in the face at times early on in the story, Indiana endeared herself to me almost immediately, she was the shining light in this story for me, despite her innocence and wide eyed optimism early on, she never seemed naïve, Indiana had a wisdom beyond her years, she had a beautiful fragility to her, while displaying an inherent strength, that was mesmerising, while the title suggests that Carter was the hero, Indiana stood out for me, it was her belief in Carter that made me want to believe in him and his ability to become the kind of man she could be proud of, I think it was that belief that enabled him to become the kind of man she knew he could be. Bastard was a funny, sexy, angst filled coming if age tale about a man struggling to find his place in the world, and the girl who was both his biggest adversary, and cheerleader, it was addictive from the very first page until the very last line.

If I could give this time machine 5+ stars I would. Bastard is, by far, one of my favorite reads of 2015. Hilariously funny at its worst, and sinfully sexy at its best.

There was never a moment that I did not feel an infinite amount of emotions while being transported into Carter and Indi's world. I instantly fell in love with Carter (watch out ladies, he's been licked), and Indiana was someone that I'd want to be close friends with. Each character was created perfectly and J.L.'s words brought them to life.

Their trials and tribulations were not for the faint of heart and I found myself weeping for them, for their success, hardship, courage and strength. This book made me have all the feels! ~ Kelly, 5 stars

~~~
Carter Reynolds was crushed by one little derogatory word when he was just a small child. That word, uttered by someone who was supposed to love him, completely changed the way he saw himself, and because of that—the course of his life. He was a miserable bastard...until he met her.
Indiana (Indi) Montgomery, his next door neighbor, is as light as Carter is dark. As a man deeply committed to being miserable, Indi’s light offends Carter and he invests a lot of time and energy into keeping her away. But light will always fill in the darkness, and before long, he is powerless against her warmth, kindness, and beauty.
Despite finding his first love, Carter’s life circumstances are incredibly difficult and ultimately drive the couple apart. Five years later, Carter is summoned back home, and there she is. More beautiful, and shining brighter than ever. Carter's not a kid anymore, and he's not as quick to shy away from his feelings. Indi has moved on, but there's an irresistible pull back to Carter. These two are meant to be together; they are the perfect yin and yang halves to each other.
This book is a mixture of first love, second chance love, and learning to love yourself despite how cruel the world can be. Indi and Carter go through the wringer for each other, and sometimes the choices they made (particularly Carter) were tough to read. I think the author did a magnificent job of showing how much Carter grew up over the course of the book, though. He started as an insecure, damaged kid and wound up strong, sexy, sensitive adult.
When they finally figure their shit out, Carter and Indi are intense. Their feelings for each other run very deep and their chemistry runs very hot. They’re both sexually charged, and there are lots of kindle melting scenes here—consider going panty-less while reading!
While their relationship is high drama (and boy, is it ever) I appreciate that none of it is brought on by themselves. It’s real life drama, or drama that results from the difficult situations they find themselves in. There is lots of heartache and tears, as well as laughs and tenderness and, of course, steamy, hot, intimate scenes.
There is SO MUCH happening in this book, it’s to the author’s great credit that it never feels overwhelming or rushed or like one storyline didn’t get due justice. It all works. It’s beautiful and intense and it’s nearly impossible not to love Indi and Carter.
The journey is worth it. I finished the book feeling a little exhausted from all the emotions, and the ending takes a little twist that maybe nudged up against “over the top” for me—but just barely. Overall, this was an incredibly sweet read that left my heart fully won-over and satisfied. ~ Shelly, 4 stars
My God.
Really....my god. How good is this book. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Bastard from the author, and I must say I LOVED IT.
Indi and Carter's story was beyond words. JL Perry has a way with words. She's able to draw you in, hold you hostage until the very last word.
Indi is a girl with a lot of backbone. She gives just as good as she gets from Carter. Her story to me was what brought the pages to life. Don't get me wrong, Carter is a great male lead who was expecting people to be disappointed in him. His growth and his thoughts kept me entertained.
JL Perry, you've written such a phenomenal story, and you really should be proud of yourself. Well done.
........no words. Actually, I do, I loved it. And I think he was Beautiful. Carter has a facade, a protective armour to hide his feelings but to Indi, he is a beautiful, kind, sweet, caring, incredibly loyal and loveable bastard. It just takes twenty six years to make him whole.
This book was the first I have read from JL Perry, and certainly won't be the last. It captures the innocent love between Indiana and the experienced Carter! There is nothing like that new love feeling of young love to bring back happy memories for me.
There is everything you need in a great story within this book. Angst, romance, gorgeous body, and banter. These two have a relationship that can withstand anything, even Carter's smart mouth. But that's ok, because Indi is just as sassy, and gives as good as she gets.
There are plenty of funny scenes to have you giggling as you are reading, and without giving too much away, JL seems to like crouches! Carter may need a white flag to protect his and Indi in all her innocence, gets touched up in a bar, but its not Carter.
Things I liked about this book, lots really, especially the double POV's. I love getting inside their heads. This was a great book that will have you wanting more. Looking forward to the next book by JL.
This author is new to me, so I was not sure what to expect. What I hoped for was a nice, romantic romance with maybe a bit of angst and a lot of spark ... and that is exactly what I got.
Indy was a bit too much of a goody-two-shoes for me at the beginning and she sometimes jumped to conclusions quite quickly. which did not endear her to me.
Carter was a great hero. as a teen his behaviour was shitty, but as we were able to see his emotions, it was a bit more understandable. I hated that circumstances forced him to leave but I think in the end it was for the best, as it got him the chance to grow up to the person he was in the end.
the second half was not very unpredictable but unbelievable sweet and I loved it! Carter was such a great man and I loved how things developed.
so if you are looking for a sweet, romantic story, this is it! hope you enjoy it as much as I did
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is different from J L Perry's other books, this is completely stand alone and in my view her best work yet. It tells the story of Carter and how one word ruined his outlook on life until he met the wonderful Indie, this book in the beginning is not a fairy tale but tells of each characters views on where their life is going. I am not one to spoil a book by giving away the plot but this book has lots of tears, laughter and a great sense of family values. I would be proud to recommend this book to anyone. I think Jodi Perry has outdone herself and I can't wait for more of her work, she is an amazing story teller
