This was my first Brien Feathers book, and I think I am addicted. This world is so gritty, dark, bloody, and all-consuming. The setting is post-apocalyptic, and the author does an amazing job building this world for us. The descriptions pull you right into this dangerous and desperate world of predator versus prey. Sidenote: I think this would be amazing adapted to the big screen!
Earth has stopped rotating, and it is split between endless daylight, endless darkness, and the Grey in between. The sunlit Glare relies on technology and vampire hunters to survive, while the people of the Grey depend on vampire guardians and the whims of the shades. Neither society is built to last, creating a constant sense of desperation and tension throughout the story. Ace has spent years working toward earning her fangs (being turned vamp). She lives under the protection of her vampire guardian, Jackal (maybe my favorite character), both taking jobs for the shades (the dangerous and creepy winged vampires who rule the Grey). After a job goes wrong, Ace crosses paths with Siarhei, a vampire hunter searching for answers about his mother’s disappearance two decades prior. After he kidnaps Ace to pressure Jackal into more information, they get pulled into something much bigger than they expected. I think this duology will appeal to a variety of readers: it is dark fantasy, with elements of horror, scifi, and a heart-wrenching enemies-to-lovers romance. Hear me when I say this one isn’t for the faint-of-heart; there is violence, gore, and the MCs carry some seriously traumatic baggage. I think it is fair to say that all the characters are super unhinged. I could not put this one down, and although it ends in a cliffhanger, book two releases in August!!!

This is the kind of vampire book that reminds you vampires are supposed to be terrifying. Set in a brutal dystopian world where different factions of vampires, vampire creatures, and humans are all just trying to survive, it has a gritty, almost Underworld-esque feel.
I LOVED this. It is dark, bloody, violent, and completely unapologetic. These vampires aren't just pretty supernatural people who happen to drink blood. They are predators. There is something genuinely unsettling about the way these creatures exist in this world, and I appreciated the hell out of the world-building. You have humans trying to survive during the daylight, vampires controlling their own territories, and winged vampire monsters adding an entirely different level of nightmare fuel. None of the groups are neatly divided into good and evil, either. Everyone has their own agendas, their own reasons for doing terrible things, and their own version of what survival looks like. The world is awful, but it feels internally consistent because these characters have been shaped by it.
Aceis absolutely morally questionable and makes some spectacularly bad decisions and I never felt like she was being written to be likable just for the sake of it. She's a survivor. She's clever, capable, and very much a product of the world she grew up in. Watching her navigate all of these different factions while trying to figure out where she actually belongs was fascinating. Siarhei is equally compelling, although WOW, this man is hung up on his dead ex-girlfriend. Like, sir. We need to unpack some things. But I actually liked that about him because it gives him another layer beyond being the ruthless soldier. He's carrying a ridiculous amount of grief and baggage, and it clearly influences how he sees the world and the people around him. I also really enjoyed the side characters. Nobody feels polished into a perfect little package. They're flawed, sometimes awful, sometimes surprisingly decent, and usually some combination of all three. That's what makes them interesting. They're surviving in a world that has basically removed the luxury of being a good person.
The romance is also wrapped up in all of that messiness. There is attraction and tension, but neither character is in a position where falling for someone is particularly convenient. There is a lot of baggage standing between them, and I appreciated that the story doesn't pretend otherwise.
I was completely hooked. This is a fascinating, incredibly well-written take on vampires that feels genuinely dark. I adored it, and I am VERY ready to see where the next book takes these characters.

Sparkles, but not because of the vampires.
R is for Review.
If Riddick's "Pitch Black" and "Underworld" had a baby, it could be "When the Night Falls."
Very dystopian with fantasy elements. Led by Ace, a naive narrator who is thrust into feuds older than she comprehends. Everyone has secrets, but the world as a whole may be near its demise because of them. The set up makes sense, the world logically explained. One of the first stories I have read by Brien where I am like, "Can they even save this world? Is it worth it?" She went critically disastrous and then threw vampires in on top of it. And not cutesy ones. Think Anne Rices' Lestat. Contemplating existence, ready to burn the world.
This gave a nostalgic feel. True to her writing, fun and humor hidden under the most abysmal existence that has everyone fighting to survive. Quick, yet even pacing. 3 in spice. I wouldn't call it love, but the two main characters share desire. Ending that ups the stakes. Pun intended.

When the Night Falls is a fantastically written dark fantasy with terrific world building and true enemies to lovers tensions between the two main characters. The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see what the final book in the duology goes.
This book leans very hard on some very heavy topics, so PLEASE read TWs before picking it up!

Ace has been working to earn her fangs for years. Under her vampire guardian's protection, she has worked odd jobs for the shades, the winged vampires that control all things in the Grey. When a job goes sideways, Ace and her family come into contact with Siarhei and his team of vampire killers. Siarhei kidnaps Ace to force her guardian into compliance, but the mystery he's looking to uncover is much more dangerous than expected.
I loved the world building in this book. When the Night Falls takes place in a gritty, post-apocalypse Earth where the world has stopped turning, creating unending day in some areas and unending night in others. The cultures in the resulting gradients of light are quite different from each other. The humans in the Glare depend on the sun's light and their technological prowess to protect them from vampires. They train up vampire hunters, such as Siarhei, and look down upon the humans living in the dusk of the Grey. Within the Grey, humans have learned to depend on guardian vampires and to sacrifice to the demands of the shades to survive. But both ways of life are truly unsustainable. The Glare is continuously running out of water, and there are not enough humans to sustain the current vampire and shade populations, much less make more vampires. The hopelessness of continued survival undercuts every interaction as everyone is truly trying to survive, but the logical outcome is dismal at best.
Within this bleak reality we have two main characters placed in opposition to each other. Ace is a scrappy character who is highly aware that everyone around her will kill her if given the chance. She depends on her guardian, Jackal, not only for her safety, but also the chance to become a vampire herself. When she is kidnapped by Siarhei, she has the opportunity to retrieve something for Jackal that will finally earn her her fangs. But while she doesn't trust the humans in the Glare, the fact that no one wants to eat her is a welcome change that challenges her determination to follow through on Jackal's plans. Her ultimate motivation is survival, which creates a stark contrast to Siarhei's depression.
Ever since his lover committed suicide, Siarhei has struggled with depression and anxiety. He sees everything as being in the process of dying, and he sees little point in continuing on. He is however, willing to help keep his psychopathic friend, Lukas, out of trouble on a fools errand out to the border of the Grey. But what they discover out in the Grey hints at uncovering the truth of what happened to his missing mother, and Siarhei finds he can't give up on following the trail. Even if it means the death of himself and the other men with him.

Ace is a human who lives with vampires in what is known as the Grey. The Earth has stopped spinning, leaving 3 distinct areas: Night, with permanent darkness; the Glare, with permanent light; and the Grey in between. The world is dying. Shades rule the dark and grey. Humans are the ones who suffer the most, as they are used as meals for both the shades and vampires and seem to be next on the extinction list. This is a paradox, as both of the aforementioned cannot live without human blood.
There is some incredible world-building in here. The story of how the Earth became this apocalyptic vision is new. The Earth was put in this position because of shades. How they came to be, or what caused the nuclear war, is not answered. Hundreds of years have passed - humans living 500 miles into the Glare are living the status quo in Solaire (a huge walled city in the desert). Solaire’s life span is diminishing as water has become harder to obtain in the Glare. Former outposts in areas closer to the Grey have humans, but they are forgotten until vampires or shades need blood. Even the vampires in the Grey are barely surviving. An example of how people in places of power are okay with everyone else suffering as long as they are comfortable.
Ace accidentally sets off a beacon in the home of a man who left Solarium many years prior. A group of Knights set out to find him, but he is already dead. The captain, Siarhei, takes Ace captive because Jackal was once a Knight (now turned vampire) who knows where a secret base is in the Grey. Siarhei is broken - most people in Solaire are at this point with nothing to fight for. He lost his mom, who went to look for that lost outpost and never came back. Jackal could get him there, which would answer the question of what happened to her.
Siarhei and Ace start as enemies but as time goes on in Solarium, the two fall for each other. Spice meter would fall around 2/5. The story takes precedence, leaving those few scenes as an appetizer to their burgeoning love rather than overwhelming it. On the way back to the Grey, Jackal realizes the two love each other, so he gives Siarhei an out. Just take Ace back to Solaire, and he would let her go. Siarhei is unable to do that, as he needs to know what happened to his mom. Nothing goes as planned for anyone, and we are left with a serious cliffy. It's good that this is only a duology and that it's already out!

Brien Feathers creates a world where every shadow seems to hide a secret and every choice carries weight. The writing is wonderfully immersive, building a sense of anticipation that grows with every chapter. I found myself constantly questioning what would happen next, unable to resist reading "just one more chapter."
The characters are the heart of this story. They're layered, relatable, and beautifully flawed, each carrying emotional scars that make their journeys feel authentic. Watching them face their fears, navigate difficult choices, and discover their own strength made every triumph feel earned and every heartbreaking moment hit even harder.
One of my favourite aspects of the novel was the balance between tension and emotion. Whether the story was unfolding through quiet, reflective moments or pulse-pounding twists, it never lost sight of the relationships and personal growth that gave the narrative its heart. The emotional depth elevated every scene, making the stakes feel deeply personal.
By the time I reached the ending, I wasn't ready to let these characters go. When the Night Falls delivers a satisfying blend of mystery, heart, and unforgettable storytelling that will stay with me long after finishing.

I haven’t read too many post-apocalyptic type books and definitely none that involved vampires and shades so I was very intrigued by this book. We encounter a world where water is traded and prized post the Earth stopping its rotations, leaving areas constantly in the dark (the Night), others in the sun (the Glare), and the middle ground in between (the Grey). Ace is a human who is guarded/protected by Jackal, a vampire, that hopes to get turned so she’s no longer a target for other vampires. The book starts with Ace and Jackal, along with Pixie (a child vampire going through blood dementia) and Leo, another vampire, on a job which leads to Ace encountering Siarhei, a vampire hunter, and being kidnapped by him to Solaire, the vampire hunters’ base of operations.
Ace and Siarhei are two very different people that come together in a crazy world. Ace is a survivor and is willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive. Siarhei has a set of morals and is on a quest to find his mother, whom disappeared on a mission. Along the way, they start a relationship and are working together, albeit sometimes without trust, to get Ace back to Jackal and Siarhei to answers about his mother. We get some truth bombs near the end (Jackal was what?! Siarhei’s father is who?!!) and a cliff hanger that just left me wanting more.
I really enjoyed the side characters, notably Pixie, Lukas, and Copper. Pixie was just so innocent due to the blood dementia and gave some comic relief whereas Lukas was just stone cold crazy, but the kind of crazy you want on your side. I just liked Copper because she was so ornery all the time. I liked Jackal at the beginning of the book but then at the very end, when he betrayed Ace/Siarhei, my opinion of him went down. I understood why he did what he did but I didn’t like it.
Overall, I found this book to be a fast read and I really want to know what’s the deal with Selene - what is there? Will we find out in book two? And what’s going to happen with Ace and Siarhei after the ending (which also blew my mind)?! Many thanks to Brien Feathers for the opportunity to read this ARC!

I received an advance copy from booksirens, and I got lucky. I had a blast. This was like a grade A western with gunslingers, cheap taverns and expensive water, except the stage was a post-apocalyptic future.

The crust had stopped rotating, so the sunlit areas were desiccated and starved of water. Shades, or original vampires, and made vampires were roaming the dark areas and the Grey, transitions. Ace was found by a vampire, Jackal, after her parents were killed. Jackal and his other ‘daughter’ Pixie, a ten-year-old vampire with dementia, were her family, and she would do anything to stay alive long enough to care for them both. Including running illegal operations.
Ace inadvertently activated an SOS beacon to the human side in the light area, and Siarhei, a captain, campaigned to revisit the lost area. His sole need in life was to find out what happened to his parents/parent. Nothing would stop him: neither love nor duties nor vampire infestations. His best (murderous) friend Lukas was willing to aid him to destruction, because nothing made him happy.
I loved the military action! It seemed so real while describing the Shades attacking like a downpour of razor blades while machine guns emit sparks as they returned fire. And knowing Brien’s writing, we never know if Siarhei and Ace will ultimately get a HEA. It certainly seems bleak.

Brian Feathers has done it again. I finished this book and immediately found myself thinking: what just happened, and how am I supposed to wait for the next one?
One of the biggest strengths of this story is the worldbuilding. The setting feels incredibly original and immersive, with vampires, Shades, humans, and a world that is clearly broken. There are strong dystopian and post apocalyptic vibes throughout, from the harsh living conditions to the constant sense that resources are limited and survival is never guaranteed. The more I learned about the world, the more fascinated I became.
As with the author’s other books, there is also much more going on beneath the surface than it initially appears. Secrets, conspiracies? hidden motivations, and larger forces slowly reveal themselves, and I loved uncovering those layers alongside the characters.
The relationships were another highlight for me. What I appreciate so much about Brian Feathers’ writing is that emotions never feel simple or convenient. The characters make difficult choices, feelings are messy, loyalties are complicated, and people are not easily sorted into heroes and villains. There is a strong morally gray element to many of the relationships, which makes them feel surprisingly human despite the fantastical setting.
And once again, there is that bittersweet quality to the romance that I have started to associate with this author’s work. The emotional connections feel genuine, but they are never easy. By the end, I found myself wondering whether a truly happy ending is even possible for these characters, and that uncertainty makes me even more invested.
The ending left me with far more questions than answers, and I already want to continue with the next book to find out what is really going on.
Overall, this was an atmospheric, emotional, and highly engaging fantasy with excellent worldbuilding and complex character dynamics. I will definitely be continuing the series.

I knew this would have a cliffhanger - but what a cliffhanger!
The premise - set like… 800 years or so in the future? Vampires pretty much rule this post-apocalyptic world. The Earth has stopped spinning - the Glare gets sun at all times, it's a desert where water is scarce. The Night is in perpetual darkness and the Grey is perpetual dusk. It actually rains in the Night and the Grey but it's also teeming with vampires so….Some humans do live in the Grey, but you gotta have a vampire that's taken you under their protection.

I loved our two MCs - Ace and Siarhei. Their chemistry and slow-burn romance was such a great read. I really loved the side characters too - Lukas, Jackal, Pixie. I'm not sure if side-characters is the right thing to call them as they were just as important and filled out as our two MCs! I honestly can't wait to see how Lukas has been doing.
And that ending OMG!!!! There was so much we found out too, it was so good!
Great fast-paced book. Brien Feathers' writing is so engaging and it sucks you right in from the start. I love her characters, the dialogue and the level of spice in her books (and the way those scenes are written) is just right for me! I'm not always a huge fan of spice so that's a big deal for me. I also love how even though the stories are pretty dark, there's always a level of humour there at some points.

Vampires, post-apocalyptic world, unearthed secrets.
This book has a unique world, set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with vampires and shades. Humans fight for survival and water.
"Ace" is a human woman, raised by vampires, who hopes to someday become a vampire herself. I liked her character at first. She seemed strong and independent, but unfortunately that changed when she met Siarhei. Her character completely changed, and she became this dependant, almost child-like person with him, which was a huge bummer. She does eventually become more confident and strong again later on in the book, but by that point her character was already ruined for me.
I had a hard time liking Siarhei, I don't know what it was but I just could not connect with his character. I understand he has a tragic past and all that, but most of his actions and dialogue made me not like him.
The romance didn't feel realistic to me. It felt more like two hurt/broken people leaning on each other for support, but the amount of miscommunication/no communication at all between them was insane.
The pacing felt off too, some parts were rushed while others felt like they went on for way longer than they needed to.
I did like the fighting scenes though, they felt like something you would see in an action movie. These scenes were written well.
I also really liked Jackal, he became my favorite character in the end.
I think if you like reading post-apocalyptic vampire books with broken characters and romance, then you would probably enjoy this book!

I was blessed to receive an ARC of When the Night Falls from the author. I was a little intimated at first due to all of the world building and learning the hierarchy of society. I think a brief glossary or appendix would be helpful. Needless to say I have a lot of highlights that I could go back to, to make sure I was understanding some things. Once I got used to all of the terms I was SOLD!!!! The story was complex, intriguing and I loved how the worlds intertwined! I will inform you that it does not end on a HEA. I loved the FMC Ace, she was so naive to certain parts of the human world. She was so mesmerized by the little things we take advantage of. Apples, is all I am going to say. The relationship she had with her vampire ward Jackal was interesting. Needless to say I’m not a big fan of him. The MMC, Captain of the whiteguards was a broken soul. There was definitely slow burn going on there between Siarhei and Ace. The other side characters were fun as well! Lukas was an ass, Pixie was childlike but there was a reason, and the captain’s guards all made it full circle! The characters called the shade were vile creatures and added a great terror aspect. There is mystery, political intrigue, vampires, action filled battles, and a slow burn romance.
I 100% completely loved this book! I cannot wait for Book 2 as it does end on a huge cliffhanger!

I absolutely flew through When the Night Falls — finished it in two days, which probably tells you everything you need to know!
Set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans and vampires exist alongside the terrifying Shades, this had much more going on than I expected from a vampire romance.
Ace is a feisty human trader raised amongst vampires, while Siarhei is a Whiteguard. They're supposed to be on opposing sides, and when Ace ends up his hostage, their relationship starts exactly where I like it — with plenty of tension. 😂
I really liked Ace as an FMC, but Siarhei was probably the character who pulled me in most. Their relationship develops alongside a much bigger story involving survival, loyalty, betrayal and Siarhei's search for his mother.
My only real struggle was keeping track of everyone at first. There are a lot of characters, factions and pieces of worldbuilding to take in, and occasionally I found myself having to remember who someone was or where they fitted into everything.
But once I was in — I was IN. The pacing kept me reading, I genuinely cared about Ace and Siarhei, and then came THAT ENDING.
I won't spoil it, but seriously?!
You cannot end a book there and expect me to be okay. 😭😂

Holy crap! Where do I begin with this one?!
This book was honestly, phenomenal. It was wonderful in every way imaginable.
I didn’t want to put this down as soon as I picked it up.
Each character had an amazing backstory and we’re all so beautifully written!
I loved each and every one of them even though I disliked them at times too. But not Pixie, of course! She was just so darn cute.
This story takes us on one crazy adventure. We’re everywhere all at once but it’s not overwhelming, as it was done just right.
I loved Ace! She was hilarious, strong, hard headed, and a butt kicker! I loved reading her POV’s the most.
Siarhei, dudes a butt head at first. All high and mighty but I guess that’s what happens when you’re a Captain. I disliked him so much in the beginning and at some points when i started to like him, he reminded me why i disliked him. That was until i came to love him.
Siarhei and Ace were so cute together even when they were bickering over nothing. I loved seeing them together because as much as they “hated” one another, they were adorable together.
I am so looking forward to book 2 upon release. I cannot wait to find out what happens next, especially after a cliffhanger like that!

The vibe: post apocalyptic world, where the sun never sets/ night is eternal depending on where you are. Vampires vs the remaining humans- nothing is quite what you thought..
Genre/tropes: enemies to lovers, vampires, forced proximity, dark romance, soldiers x vampires
No spoiler summary:
The story follows Ace and her journey to prove herself worthy of gaining fangs. She ends up in the hands of the human soldiers, and on her journey back to her vampire family finds a friend and lots of answers to question no one thought to ask.
The real battle is just beginning.
Absolutely loved this book, such and interesting take on vampires and how the post apocalyptic struggle for power runs.
The characters are good fun, you get a really feel for them and the reason they are the way they are.
The world building paints a fantastic contrast between the two sides of the war, and the nostalgia is very palpable.
Couldn’t put this book down, smashed through it in 2days and I’ve cleared my calendar to start book two as soon as it’s out!
Be warned it ends on a cliffhanger so best order both books together!
This is an immediate add to TBR recommendation for anyone who enjoys dystopian stories and vampires

This could be one of the coolest vampire books I’ve ever read.
When Feathers says dark fantasy, this is DARK. And in the gritty, gut-wrenching, addictive way that dark fantasy should be. Feathers doesn’t shy away from the violence and gore of a post-apocalyptic world, leaning heavily into themes of survival, trauma, and trust. Every character is carrying some sort of emotional baggage, which plays really well in a world that is … well, literally falling apart.
Which brings me to the world-building. Frankly, this has to be one of the most wicked world settings I think I’ve ever come across in a story. Like ever. A world that has stopped rotating, endless days on one side, endless nights on the other, and this place called the Grey. Feathers took a dystopian/post-apocalyptic setting and made it uniquely her own. And then when nobody was looking, she added heavy snark, vampire hunters and guardians, and a page-gripping cliffhanger to make sure you begged for the second book.
Yup, I’m begging.
This is storytelling at its best. These are the kinds of stories the world needs more of.

Every character is carrying some sort of emotional baggage, which plays really well in a world that is … well, literally falling apart.
Which brings me to the world-building. Frankly, this has to be one of the most wicked world settings I think I’ve ever come across in a story. Like ever. A world that has stopped rotating, endless days on one side, endless nights on the other, and this place called the Grey. Feathers took a dystopian/post-apocalyptic setting and made it uniquely her own. And then when nobody was looking, she added heavy snark, vampire hunters and guardians, and a page-gripping cliffhanger to make sure you begged for the second book.
Yup, I’m begging.
This is storytelling at its best. These are the kinds of stories the world needs more of.

As a fan of post-apocalyptic, romantasy, dark romance/fantasy, and monster romance, this book was an easy five star read for me. I would definitely recommend it to any fans of these genres.

The writing was a little confusing at the start, but as the story progressed, the stories of the vampires, humans, and Shades came together and really began to pique my interest. The world-building unfolds quickly, making it a fast-paced read.
This is a story about humanity moving toward extinction, Shades creating vampires, and a world that has been left stagnant for centuries. Humans are becoming rare, resources such as water and clean air are scarce, and even the natural cycle of day and night has become unusual due to pollution and environmental collapse.
I found the concept of this world fascinating, especially the relationships between humans, vampires, and Shades as they struggle to survive in a broken world.
I’m looking forward to reading book two so I can see how this world evolves and what happens next.

This is a real change of pace book for me. It's a dystopian world where all that we know of the earth has radically changed. What we woud call earth and where humans live is the Glare, constant sun, sand and water is strictly rationed. Both humans and vampires live in the Grey, and the Night is inhabited by shades. Ace and Jackal are on a mission that rapidly goes badly and she is taken by the armed force known as the knights, who are in fractured factions as well. Siarhei, a knight, has lost his mother and another who he had loved, this- impacts him greatly. Don't confuse knights with our image of knights, all there is in common there is a security force and aggression. A little relief is provided with a vampire named Pixie, little girl in looks but very old in vampire age- she's the one innocent in all of this. This is other world conflict fantasy that really holds your attention, with an ending that you will not see coming- makes for a book two that may or may not be what we think!

What an amazing treat to journey into this gritty dark world of humans and vampires. I could not put this book down! When the Night Falls kept me glued to the page, constantly wondering what would happen next in its fascinating dystopian world divided between day and night. The blend of brutal vampire lore, winged shades, and modern weaponry made for a setting that felt fresh and completely unique.
I really loved Ace and Siarhei, although it took me a little while to warm up to Siarhei. Once I did, though, he had completely earned it. Both characters were beautifully flawed and incredibly dynamic—I genuinely cared about what happened to them and couldn't wait to see how their choices would shape the story. Add in the enemies-to-lovers tension, and it was pure dark magic!
This was my first Brien Feathers book, but it definitely won't be my last. I'll be diving straight into book two because after that cliffhanger, I absolutely have to know what happens next!

This was an amazing human and vampire story set in a dystopian apocalyptic world. First and foremost, the world building was amazing. I fall in love with an authors imagination of what they want their world to look like in their books, and this one was perfectly done. It held depth, description, and a vividness that was so easy to get pulled into. This is what captured me first. And then there were these amazing characters. I won’t name names because some are a bit difficult to spell and I sing want to disrespect anyone. But there was some serious love/ hate going on with a few of them. But overall, I loved this story. It was sweet AB’s fun. Crazy at times. But it was really captivating and I had a great time with this one. I’ve never read this author before, but I’ll definitely be reading a lot more of them. Toss this on your TBR!

Dystopian, post-apocalyptic and dark. It is set in a world that is bleak, dire and violent. Every decision the characters make is high stakes and everything is so unpredictable. It is action-packed, fast-paced and no one is safe!
Ace is strong and gutsy and through her we discover a lot of secrets. Feathers has crafted a lot of secrets and hidden agendas sown into the narrative for them to grow and add more to this squalor that the world has become. The twists, the gore and the shock revelations are so mind blowing!
Such a unique world, that is so full of grim and questionable motives, it does not disappoint! There is so much to learn and explore so I am hoping more is revealed in Book 2.

This book was made for me. Enemies to lovers, fight, grit, against all odds, hope hidden but clinging on. The superb combination of a dystopian world torn apart with the fight for survival amongst three main groups-humans, vampires and shades. The backdrop is set in our world but far into the future with an interesting concept of what has happened and how the world has evolved around this disaster. I found the book well thought out, believable and with great characters flowing throughout. Fighting for survival keeps you on the edge of your book and the great relationship building between the two main characters keeps the story gripping. Brien has cleverly woven human emotions with the torn apart world that they now inhibit, drawing on what little humanity is left love blooms. 12 out of 10!

Truely a fantastic read. Brien has created a world of devastation and trauma and some how brought humor and hope. I had many laughs while reading and yet the last 25% broke my soul. It gives fallout vibes if you're a fan of that you'll love the vibe here.
The characters were written so good. The perfect amount of romantic tension and build up. Siarhei could kidnap me any day. The right amount of opposites attract going on here with Ace

ohhh this was soooo good - post-apocalyptic vampires, perpetual night/day bands, planetary core somehow stopped rotating, water traded for blood between vampires/humans, creatures called shades the vampires serve/are ruled by, old secrets from hundreds of years before, plot twists, cover-ups, a bloody coup, and more - what's not to love?! - literally could not put the book down, need the sequel of the duet i.e. book 2 like last week! :P - can't wait to see what else they uncover, discover, if they ever find out what's in Selene, how what happens at the end even happened, and sooo much more - ahhhhh - I have so many questions I need book 2 to answer lol - and things I wanna see it resolve too.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had wonderful world-building that pulled me right in, so much so that I could almost picture each place if I closed my eyes long enough. I really enjoyed the character building the author did as well, and the time they gave each one. Once I started this book, I had a hard time putting it down and was excited at each page turn. The different points of view, characters, and species were fun to read and learn more about. I feel torn about which one I prefer because they all have equally ugly parts about them, and it really makes you think. It truly is a different kind of book and world than I am used to reading, and the change was a wonderful choice. I am eagerly looking forward to Book 2 and cannot wait to see what happens.
