When The Mountains Held Us: A Small-Town Mountain Romance

Rate this book
Oakley thought leaving her abusive ex was the hardest thing she would have to do.

Fleeing from her past with nothing but a few meager belongings and a dream, she finds shelter in the small mountain town of North Creek. Nestled in the heart of the Adirondack mountains, teeming with wildlife, breath-taking sunsets and trails that wind endlessly through towering pines, she thinks she may finally have found the peace she’s been searching for all along.

Then she meets Levi.

Rugged and fiercely protective with eyes that rival the pines, Levi, along with a few of his friends, welcome Oakley into town with open arms and quiet encouragement to become who she was meant to be all along. Between the long hikes and hushed conversations, Oakley begins to lower the walls around her and open up in a way she hasn’t in a long, long time. She’s drawn to Levi in a way she can’t explain— and can’t resist.

But Levi has a dark past of his own.

Haunted by the fear of becoming the very monster he fought to survive, he’s spent years building the walls around his heart brick by brick. But the more time he spends with Oakley and the more he sees his own broken self reflected in her blue-gray eyes, the more those walls begin to crumble.

Just when the tension sparking between them ignites into something neither of them can deny, Oakley’s past reappears with a vengeance, threatening to shatter the fragile life she’s only just begun to build.

In the shadows of the mountains that healed them both, Oakley and Levi must decide if love is worth the risk, or if some scars are too deep to heal.

She came to the mountains to survive… and accidentally found a reason to stay.

Oakley’s healing in North Creek felt so real, it was messy, raw, and quietly powerful in a way that stays with you. No instant transformation, just a slow rebuilding of someone learning how to breathe again after everything she’s endured.

“I think I left the old me behind at the top of that cliff… I emerged as someone new.” To me this line really captures her entire journey.

And Levi… grumpy, guarded, and completely undone the moment Oakley enters his life. The tension between them is intense and slow-building, the kind that feels inevitable rather than forced.

“When you spend so long in fight or flight, it’s hard to differentiate when you aren’t.” that line hit harder than expected.

To me this is a story about survival, healing, and two broken people choosing each other anyway. Emotional, addictive, and one that lingers long after finishing.

✨ Favorite quotes ✨

The easy way I found myself opening up to him feels like that split second at the top of a rollercoaster right before you drop.

I think I left the old me behind at the top of that cliff. When I sprang up out of the water, spluttering and gasping for breath, I emerged as someone new.

“When you spend so long in fight or flight, it’s hard to differentiate when you aren’t.”

She’s so beautiful it hurts. I don’t know how I’ve gone my entire life without knowing her, because now that I’ve met her, I can’t imagine any life worth living that doesn’t have her in it.

I’ve never yearned for a woman the way I yearn for her. She is my undoing, and I will gladly lay the pieces of myself at her feet.

You see, the mountains might have healed her, but she healed me. And one day, I plan to tell her just how much. After all, we have all the time in the world.

MUST READ!! 🔥🔥🌶️

I really loved this one. Oakley and Levi have both been through so much, and I loved watching them slowly find comfort and safety in each other. Their relationship felt genuine, and the slow burn was definitely a slow burn (in a good way) romance was definitely worth the wait. The small town mountain setting was beautiful and made me want to pack up and move there. I wanted to go see a beautiful waterfall 💙💚⛰️

This book definitely isn’t a light read since it touches on abuse, trauma, and healing, but it handles those topics with care. Seeing both characters learn to trust again and realize they deserved happiness was my favorite part. If you like emotional small town romances with protective heroes, character growth, and plenty of heart, I highly recommend this one.

My friend Kellie suggested I sign up for this ARC and I’m so glad I did.

I was immediately pulled in on the first chapter. This is not just a love story there is so much more depth in Levi and Oakley’s story. She runs away to survive something she wants to leave in the past and Levi was there to help her from day one. She is slowly rebuilding a life she didn’t need to escape from. Levi seems like a grumpy MMC who has his walls up but he is soft and gentle with her and there is so much good in him a small town romance that will pull at your heart and has a slow burn that is more than worth it. Levi is a green flag MMC through and through!

When the Mountains Held Us completely pulled me in and refused to let go.

This story is so much more than a romance. It’s a beautiful journey of healing, courage, perseverance, friendship, and finding the strength to keep moving forward when life has knocked you down. While it does touch on domestic violence and the lasting impact it can have, the story is ultimately one of hope, resilience, and learning to trust again.

Levi?! Absolute perfection! A hardworking, protective blue-collar MMC who had me swooning from the very beginning. The way he shows up, supports, and cares for the people he loves made him impossible not to fall for.

The romance is definitely a slow burn, but trust me—it is worth every second of the wait. The tension, the chemistry, the anticipation… perfection. And for those who know, one word bathtub. That’s all I’m saying. 👀

This book had me feeling everything. I was smiling, sweating, angry, emotional, and incredibly proud of these characters and the growth they experienced throughout the story! Just when I thought I knew where things were headed, the twist had me completely hooked and turning pages late into the night.

The small-town setting felt like its own character, filled with friendships, community, and the kind of support system everyone wishes they had. The Adirondacks are a sentimental place for me, the last place I went on getaway weekend with my Dad, so I felt like I was meant to read this, it also made it so easy to picture the true paradise of small town North Creek.

Of course I can’t write this review without mentioning Bandit and his love for Oakley. Their bond was absolutely adorable and made my heart melt. The perfect furry bodyguard!

If you love small-town romance, protective heroes, emotional healing journeys, found family, and a slow-burn romance with rewarding spice, When the Mountains Held Us deserves a spot on your TBR.

**Alpha review **

I had the honor and pleasure of alpha reading this. If you think you’re going into this thinking you’re going to get the typical small-town romance involving the normal slow burn cute spicy read, you’re wrong. No, this is the small-town romance you get with that thrilling suspense rolled into a slow burn that will have you weak at the knees. The tension that burns in these pages will leave you wanting, no begging for more. Pleading for that time between Levi and Oakley. But no. Before this can remotely happen, Oakley has so much to heal from. And this healing is bittersweet. She forms such strong friendships and amazing connections along this escape she’s on—not even expecting anything of what she gets. A love that she deserves. This is the kind of love and protection people search their entire lives for. Levi is everything. He’s fierce, protective, charming, and damn him with his dirty mouth. But do not mess with anyone he loves and cares for. This story is beautifully written and plot driven that brings so much healing, tension, and even a plot twist that you won’t see coming. While this is a very slow burn, the wait is worth every…single… page. The author does not leave us completely hanging either and delivers in every aspect. If you’re looking for a romantic thriller that will give you shivers up your spine, that will have you at your knees begging for that steamy spice, with such an edge of the seat thrill, this needs to be on your TBR. A debut novel done so well that exceeds any and all expectations.

When The Mountains Held us gave me the warm and fuzzies. It was so comforting to read, but it kept me longing for more. Chapter after chapter I was just waiting, hoping, anticipating, and then BAM. 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Levi is a freak in the sheets, hot damn!

I’m so proud of Oakley. What she accomplished by escaping her past is what I think a lot of women wish and dream of doing. Her bravery was inspiring. Many stay in situations because they feel like starting over would be too hard, she showed what can happen when you choose yourself. She’s a badass!

Levi is just, ugh. How is he so chivalrous? How does he always know what to say? How is he so good at 🌶️? He’s truly the definition of when rugged mountain man meets golden retriever. I would choose him too, Oakley!

The Adirondacks have always held a special place in my heart. Seeing them described in a novel just brings me so much joy. So many hours spent hiking, camping, and exploring what is practically right in my backyard. They truly show you how small you are in comparison, I know Oakley felt that too.

My mom brain can only handle stories that are easy to follow, with very relatable characters that draw you in. It was an effortless read, despite all the drama, thriller and 🌶️ packed in!

Sometimes all you need is a good book… and When The Mountains Held Us checked all the boxes for me.

This book absolutely shattered my heart and then slowly put it back together again. Oakley’s story of surviving domestic violence and finding the strength to run away and start over was incredibly powerful. Watching her heal while building a new life had me rooting for her every step of the way.

Then there’s Levi, whose own childhood was shaped by witnessing domestic violence at the hands of his father. Their shared trauma, strength, and journey toward healing made their connection feel so real and meaningful.

And don’t even get me started on Travis. The lengths Oakley’s ex went to in order to destroy her life had me furious. Every twist kept me on edge, and that ending completely blew my mind!

The chemistry between Oakley and Levi was phenomenal, with plenty of unforgettable spicy moments that perfectly balanced the heavier themes. More than anything, I loved the message of strength, resilience, healing, and finding love after trauma. Oakley and Levi both deserved their happy ending, and I couldn’t have been happier for them.

This is an easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐—actually, five stars plus infinity from me!

Ahhh! This book had me hooked from page one! Oakley and Levi were a swoon-worthy couple whose relationship built across the pages both electrically and smoothly. Both Oakley and Levi are healing wounds from their pasts, and while they are different, they’re able to help each grow both individually and together as a couple. They complement each other in a way that helps them find their strengths, pushing them to each be their best selves. Their banter is fun and playful while the chemistry is 🥵 The romance was sweet, causing me to swoon and fall for Levi more and more, while I cheered for Oakley to find herself and to take a chance on love again.

T.L. Albrecht created a setting that showcased the love these two shared in a way that I was invested in not only across the pages, but even after the book ended. These characters were so real, and the obstacles they each had to overcome to finally love again were so raw, I was able to feel all the feels while reading. I cannot wait to be back in this town to see what’s in store for not only Levi and Oakley (and Bandit 🐶, too), but for the other characters as well!

✨ Arc reader ✨

The book was such a beautiful and emotional read. Oakley leaves behind an abusive relationship and escapes to a quiet mountain town, hoping for a fresh start. There she meets Levi, who is carrying wounds from his own past, and watching their relationship grow was one of my favorite parts of the book. The healing journey for both characters felt genuine and heartfelt. Their connection wasn’t just about romance,it was about learning to trust again, finding hope after heartbreak, and realizing that it’s okay to let someone in. The mountain setting was absolutely beautiful and added so much warmth and comfort to the story. T.L. Albrecht created characters I genuinely cared about, and I found myself rooting for Oakley and Levi every step of the way. Their story had me smiling, tearing up, and completely invested from beginning to end. Also if you like spicinesssss this is the book for you 👀.
I am so excited if there is a second book and will be looking forward to reading into the futures of Levi and Oakley!

The Adirondack Mountain setting was absolutely breathtaking and felt like a character in its own right. The trails, towering pines, and close knit small town (where everybody knows everybody) community created the perfect backdrop for a story about healing and second chances. Felt like home.

What I appreciated most was how the book handled trauma and recovery with care. Both Oakley and Levi are flawed, realistic characters learning that they are worthy of love despite the pain they've endured. When Oakley's past comes back to threaten everything she's built, the stakes become even more intense, making it impossible to put the book down.

If you enjoy emotional small town romances, wounded but loving heroes, strong heroines finding their voice, and stories filled with healing, hope, and heart, I highly recommend this one. A beautiful reminder that sometimes the people who are broken in similar ways can help each other become whole again. This story felt real.

I loved this book!

The setting for the book was amazing!! Who doesn’t love a small town where everyone knows everyone AND their business?! I would LOVE to live in that town!

T.L writes characters that you want to root for! I was cheering for Oakley from the beginning of the book. I wanted her to get a new chance at love and live a life that she truly loved!

Don’t even get me started on Levi!! Ahhh, I need this man. He is SUCH a green flag! I loved him when he was first introduced! I was also rooting for him! He’s just too sweet!

Plus the side characters?! Ahhh, I loved Levi’s work friends! I was laughing out loud at some of their conversations. I absolutely loved them. I am hoping a certain friend of Levi’s gets a book. (If you know you know 😉.) Also, I really liked Jessie. She’s so sweet and a great friend to Oakley. I also hope she gets a book as well.

Can’t wait to read whatever T.L writes next! 🫶🏻

Thank you so much T.L for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

I inhaled this book in 24 hours! The slow burn was incredible- I had to keep going all day so I could finally get to the spice. That being said, the burn was WELL worth the wait with the author finally getting to the good stuff and doing it so dang well. No cringe moments or awkward writing, just some hot and spicy content 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.

The character development and POV stories were really well done. I enjoyed seeing inside Levi & Oakley’s heads and going back and forth between them.

Four out of five stars only because some of it was a bit predictable- but that’s also a testament to the excellent buildup.

Overall a really great debut novel, some excellent spicy slow burn and characters I loved getting to know. Will definitely be following this author in the future- easily rivaling the works of Emily Henry etc.

This was hands down one of my favorite books I’ve read this year, and I’m still sitting here wondering how this was the author’s first published book. The emotional depth, the character development, the pacing…everything just worked. I was completely invested from beginning to end. I felt every emotion alongside these characters.

I don’t think this author even realizes how incredibly talented they are. If this is what they can do with a debut, I cannot wait to see what they write next! Sign me up!

A five-star read that reminded me exactly why I love picking up indie books. Don’t let this one fly under your radar.

First, thanks so much to T.L. Albrecht for the ARC, I really loved this book and look forward to the rest of the series!

If you're looking to a small town pulls at your heart strings or a woman running to a small town to escape a partner and finds herself… this book is for you! The tension between the MMC and FMC is so good!

Oakley is running from her abusive partner and lands in a small town where she meets Levi, a man who has his own haunted past.

Levi will not let Oakley struggle and be at risk with her ex possibly being around.
Together they realize their feelings and confront both their pasts together.

The way this book makes you feel like you’re home. The mountains, the people, the emotions. The way that Albrecht paints Oakley’s pain and hurt into the most beautiful healing journey is so special. W.T.M.H.U. explores topics of domestic violence and abuse but is handled with such care (please remember to take care of yourself and mental health before all!!)

I came for a love story and got more than I bargained for. I fell totally in love with Levi, just like Oakley did, and I never wanted the story to end.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This is the debut noval for this author. It is a slow burn small town romance with HEA ending.
Oakley is running from her abusive ex-boyfriend. This quiet mountain town is just what she needs to finally be able to breathe.
Levi has grown up in North Creek. He mostly keeps to himself due to everyone in town knowing about the trauma he endured as a kid. He is so worried about becoming like his father.
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more from this author. Hope we get Jessie and Justin's book next.

Advance reader review

Get you a boyfriend like Levi.

“I want you to assume. All those thoughts swirling through your head right now? They’re normal. They’re valid fears. But I want you to fight them this time. I see you, Oakley. I see the way you question yourself and the way you question others. I can’t blame you for that. But I need you to fight, baby. You deserve to be loved and cherished, but how can you accept someone else’s version of that when you don’t believe you deserve it?”

Absolutely loved this book. The slow burn was so good, but so worth it.

Wow. This book left me so emotional. In this story we meet Oakley, a survivor of domestic violence, is incredibly strong and resilient. I found myself hoping for her happiness from the very first page. Levi, who grew up witnessing domestic violence, carries scars of his own. Watching these two navigate their pasts and find healing together was both heartbreaking and beautiful. It’s a heavy story, so please check the trigger warnings. However, the way the author balances the trauma, the romance, and the spice is really done right. It’s a tender and deeply moving, story I am so glad I was given the opportunity to read.
Hands down 5 stars!

ARC REVIEW!

Oh my… I truly loved this book so much!! You don’t see stories like this one very often. We love to see strong FMCs battle their mental health & not only survive, but thrive… but rarely do we get to see the MMC do it as well. I related to Levi’s story so much and to see both characters grow, evolve, and heal TOGETHER was worth all 5 stars!

The spice was perfect- the slow burn was burning, and the banter had me giggling. 👏🏼👏🏼

I adored Oakleigh & Levi’s story & I’m really hoping we get to see Justin & Jessie’s story in the future 👀🤩

This book was an amazing story of two souls coming together to heal in ways they so desperately needed. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Oakley and Levi both as separate individuals and together. And the romance… need I say anymore 🥵🌶️. This book is written beautifully and exceeded my expectations! Omg I absolutely ate this up and loved this story. So much depth and feeling in this sweet romance! Levi is the ultimate sweet golden retriever with a hidden dark side from an abusive upbringing. He will protect those he loves anyway possible! Oakley is escaping an abusive relationship and shows so much character growth in this story. This was my first book by this author and will NOT be my last! Definitely up there with my top reads for the year! Small mountain town romance at its finest!

I love a good second chance with some romantic suspense thrown in!

Oakley is such a strong character and it just builds for her in this story.

At the beginning she has an instant connection & it opens doors for her new future. This story shows growth in both main characters. It shows over coming fear and a terrible past.

I also loved how the idea & description of the town, the trails, and falls bring you in like you’re right there with them.
Amazing job!!!

This was one of my favorite ARC reads this year. Oakley and Levi are perfect together. Oakley finds herself again and Levi helps her get there. They each bring healing, strength and love into the other’s lives. There is yearning, suspense and of course spice, all of which keep you wanting more. I will be thinking about these two for a long time. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

ARC Reader Review: Levi and Oakley are two imperfect characters in a seemingly perfect small town. Despite their struggles, they chose to persevere.

The slow burn in this one was killing me, but worth the wait.
Love that Oakley was able to overcome her past and start fresh. I enjoyed the healing journey a lot and it was beautiful to see. Levi gave her the time to get through her trauma and did not push. I love his protectiveness and just enjoyed their dynamic as a whole. The small town setting was so enjoyable along with the friendships.
