Hat Shop Mystery #4

For Scarlett Parker, part of the fun of living in London is celebrating the British holidays, and she's excited to share her first Bonfire Night with her cousin Vivian Tremont. Invited to a posh party by their friend Harrison Wentworth, Scarlett and Viv decide to promote their hat shop, Mim's Whims, by donning a few of their more outrageous creations. The hats prove to be quite the conversation starters as the girls mix and mingle with the guests--never suspecting that one of them is a killer. It's a cold, clear night, perfect for the British tradition of tossing a straw stuffed effigy of Guy Fawkes, traitor to the crown, onto the bonfire. But instead of a straw man, they realize in the heat of the moment that the would-be Guy Fawkes is actually Harrison's office rival and he's been murdered. Before the smoke has cleared, Harrison is the Metropolitan Police's prime suspect, and Scarlett and Vivian must find the real homicidal hothead before their dear friend's life goes up in flames.

Jenn McKinlay is quickly becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery authors. I received Copy Cap Murder, the 4th book in her Hat Shop Mystery series, for Christmas and wanted to catch up on Scarlett's capers. She's an American transplant in London who's inherited her grandmother's hat shop and co-runs it with her cousin, Viv. She's socializing with a former childhood friend, Harrison, whom she's fallen head over heels for, but after a disastrous break-up before leaving the U.S., she's sworn off dating for a year. In this book, it's only been 8 months when she attends a Guy Fawkes holiday bonfire at Harrison's supervisor's house, so she won't let herself sneak anything other than a brief kiss. When a rival to Harrison is found strangled after hitting on Scarlett, they are both suspects. Throw in some potential underhanded dealings and an entire cast of colleagues who hated the deceased, you're in for a real crime-solving mystery full of jealousy, masks, and innocent espionage.

McKinlay has really rounded at this cast. I can't decide if I like this series or her other one based in a Briar Cliff library in the U.S. New England region. There's even a cross-over mention of Scarlett's parents visiting the library, which makes for a fun read this time around. I love the banter between all the British friends she's met, especially how she incorrectly learns the jargon of a new language. On the rare occasion she gets it correct, it's always a fun adventure. Of course the poor girl almost gets killed again... what's a cozy without a trip to the police and/or hospital for the main detective, right?

I enjoy learning about the hat-making business. Harrison's just fine! And there's even a hint of a ghostly presence when we sometimes hear their late grandmother's voice. It makes for a really enjoyable and quick read. At ~275 pages, it can be devoured in about three hours... and always makes for a fun, cozy time. I've got the 5th book on my shelf and will pick it up next month. Kudos to McKinlay for fearlessly delivering a fantastic series that should definitely be on any cozy reader's TBR wish list.

This series has quickly become one of my favorite must read series. Jenn McKinlay is a such a terrific writer and I think the series just gets better with each book. The author has such a wonderful writing style that she draws the reader into her world and surrounds them with such a great story line, wonderful characters and a solid mystery that you never want to leave. Whenever I pick up one of the books in this series I know I won't be disappointed and I will be transported for a few hours to visit with characters that are starting to feel like old friends.

I have really enjoyed all of the books in the series, but I think this one is my favorite so far. It is well written with wonderful characters, a strong mystery with plenty of surprises and a great setting in the hat shop and London. Jenn McKinlay has created a wonderful series that does not disappoint and is highly entertaining. If you haven't read any of the books in this series, I would encourage you to give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

Another good mystery in the Hat Shop series. I enjoyed the mystery aspect and the relationship between Scarlett and her friends. The only part I didn't enjoy was that it felt too short and not much time was spent on solving the mystery. I felt the ending came a bit too abruptly.

This another of my favorite series. Love the London setting and I want to be friends with the characters. I’m also loving how McKinlay manages to work in little nods to her other series in her books. It’s a little something extra for her fans. This story had a really exciting ending. #readforkimberly

This was not my favorite book in the series, but I still really enjoyed it. Mostly because of the characters and the fast-paced and dramatic ending. There was a little too much pinning over Harrison (If you like him so much then DO SOMETHING). Scarlett's trying to trick Viv into revealing her husband's identity was very nice comic relief. I was actually very surprised by the killer; I love reading about the hat shop itself and wish there was just some more of that, even if it doesn't add to the mystery aspect. I can't wait for the next one.

Review:

Jenn McKinlay is one of my favorite authors. Copy Cap Murder, the fourth book in the highly entertaining Hat Shop Mystery series, is the best installment yet and flat out fun to read.

Though homesick, American Scarlett Parker is settling into her new life in London with her cousin Vivian as proprietor of their grandmother’s millinery shop. She is excited to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day at her friend and business manager Harrison’s employer’s bash. Apparently, even the most posh parties have their unruly guests. When Winthrop Dashavoy, who is Harrison’s childhood and work rival, has too much to drink and accosts Scarlett during the festivities, Harrison quickly steps in to defend her honor. The bonfire comes to an abrupt halt after Win’s body is found in place of the Guy Fawkes effigy. Because of Harrison and Win’s very public display, Harrison quickly finds himself at the top of the suspect list. It does not take long for Scarlett to learn that not many people thought highly of Win, and there are plenty of suspects with good reasons to want Win dead. Scarlett knows she is on the right path to find the killer when she finds herself in danger.

Scarlett is eight months into her self-imposed year long dating ban, and she is finding it harder and harder to resist her attraction to Harrison. Though friends since childhood, now there is definitely palpable chemistry between the two. This abstinence makes for a sweet almost romance, but I will be glad when the year is over. I look forward to seeing how their relationship changes and develops in the next book. I so appreciate the lack of love triangle in this series.

McKinlay’s writing is superb, easy and witty, with just enough tension and adventure to compel the reader to keep reading. She has the ability to perfectly describe the wonderful London setting, immersing the reader completely. Copy Cap Murder is character driven, and the players are varied and well developed, yet they continue to grow with each book. Everyone should be lucky enough to experience the camaraderie that Scarlet and her friends have. Scarlett is immensely likable and intelligent. She and Viv make a Lucy and Ethel type investigating team. They sort of bumble along, in a good way, asking questions they have no business asking. There is nothing subtle about their sleuthing.

The mystery itself is solid. As I mentioned earlier, there are a handful of suspects, each unique with his/her different motivations. There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing until right before Scarlett figured it all out. Even so, there was still a final development that I did not see coming. Clever and unexpected.

Copy Cap Murder gets my highest recommendation. I think any mystery reader would enjoy Scarlett’s antics, and it can be read as a standalone. But, trust me, you are going to read the whole series if you have not already.

The New York Times bestselling author of At the Drop of a Hat returns to her London hat shop with a fresh tale of milliners and murder.

Review:

Author Jenn McKinlay always fills her books with humor, intelligence and intrigue. Copy Cap Murder is no different. This series, A Hat Shop Mystery, is fabulous. Its’ setting in the bustling big city of London makes it an odd duck as far as the normal cozy mystery. Somehow Jenn McKinlay pulls it off and keeps a small community feel while still portraying the excitement and possibilities of a huge metropolis. I love the comradery between strong protagonist Scarlett Parker, her partner in business and cousin Vivian Tremont, handsome longtime friend Harrison Wentworth and their pals. In this, the 4th book, Scarlett and her friends are invited to a fancy bonfire party by Harrison. Her first bonfire turns into a horror when a body has been put in place of a straw filled effigy.

The dead body is Harrison’s office rival and also the man that accosted Scarlett earlier in the party. Harrison had come to her rescue and left his mark on the man. The dead man, Winthrop Dashavoy, was drunk and obnoxious, but he did not deserve to die. Unfortunately, Harrison is the prime suspect. Scarlett, Viv, Fiona (Viv’s assistant) and their neighbor buddies cannot believe he is being accused. They have to find the real killer. The gang find several possible killers, but not enough evidence to present to the police. Deceased Win was not a nice person. Can they find the killer before someone else is murdered and without becoming targets themselves?

Scarlett and friends are determined to prove Harrison’s innocence and they have quite a few close calls and many an adventure. Author Jenn McKinlay’s writing style is effervescent and so are her characters. The intrigue is top-notch. Wonderful setting accompanied by descriptive writing and witty and intelligent dialogue drive this entertaining read. Scarlett and Harrison’s relationship is endearing and captivating. The flow of twists and turns, clues and missteps, danger and laughter seems effortless. The end result is a smashing hit.

Even though Copy Cap Murder is the 4th installment of this series, you would not have a problem enjoying this one. The author is amazing in her ability to get the reader caught up while keeping the avid reader thoroughly entertained. I can just imagine walking down the beautiful London street and popping into Mim’s Whims and selecting a wonderful hat to top of my outfit. I would recommend this fabulous read to any cozy fan or Anglophile. Reading Copy Cap Murder is like stepping off the Tube and grabbing a cup of tea at a small café. Fun and full of mystery and fabulous plotting, this is a fabulous read. Hat’s off once again to Jenn McKinlay – truly another smashing read.

It's Bon Fire Night in Britain, and of course, our protagonists find a dead body. Mel's paramour is the prime suspect, so she has to investigate.

A bit too much continuity, so start earlier in the series, if possible.

A posh bonfire night party and what could be better to promote Mim's Whims, Viv's Hat Shop where she creates stylish hats for Britain's upper class. Working along side Viv is her American cousin, Scarlett. They are invited to the party by friend and investment broker for the shop, handsome and British, Harrison Wentworth. Did I mention he was handsome?

In the British tradition of stuffing a dummy made of straw into the bonfire of Guy Fawkes, being a traitor to the crown. It is revealed that Harrison's childhood and workplace rival,Winthrop Dashavoy has been revealed instead and he is dead. In due time Harrison becomes Police inspector Simms and Franks number one suspect for Winthrop's murder.

Scarlett being an American, tenacious red head with a firey temper is determined to find the real killer and Viv and Scarlett wonder if they are guided by their Mim's spirit as they smell her perfume in the shop. Scarlett knows Harrison could not be responsible for the murder when her heart flutters every time he is around but it's not easy when someone else is vying for his affections too. Viv is also keeping a secret Scarlett is just dying to know but Viv is not budging but she's not the only one with secrets.

I can never wait to head to Portobello road in London,England and to Mim's Whims Hat shop with Viv and Scarlett for their latest adventure. These sleuthing cousins are a match made in heaven and much better than tea and scones. Author Jenn Mckinlay has a knack for writing character driven stories that make you want to find out what happens too them like your favorite soap opera with a murder every mystery reader craves.

COPY CAP MURDER is the feather in the cap of the Hat Shop mysteries!

I have loved author Jenn McKinlay’s writing ever since reading a book in her Cupcake Bakery Mystery series several years ago. Her style is crisp, witty, and just plain wonderful to read. Every new book by this author is a treat.

Fun and enchanting characters such as Scarlett Parker and her cousin Vivian Tremont, are to me key components to these great stories. The combination of the characters along with the mystery, intrigue, and humor serve to make these books must reads for cozy mystery fans.

This is one author who certainly knows how to get and hold her readers’ attention. COPY CAP MURDER is filled to the brim with everything that makes McKinlay’s books enjoyable. Page after marvelous page kept me rooted to my chair until I reached the exciting conclusion, which was cleverly done, and as always a great surprise. You could say I was bowlered over. ;-)

If you have a bee in your bonnet for an exceptional read, COPY CAP MURDER is the book for you!

Scarlett Parker is thrilled to be going to her first Bonfire Night hosted by her friend Harrison’s firm. However, when the time comes to burn the straw man of Guy Fawkes, the group realizes it is actually Win, Harrison’s office rival who had come on to Scarlett earlier that night. Harrison becomes a suspect, and Scarlett must figure out what is happening to keep her friend from taking the fall.

This is another fun entry in a great series. The characters and their relationships continue to grow, and I love seeing the next chapter of their lives. The multitude of suspects made for a great mystery, and I was surprised when everything was revealed at the end. And yes, we do get some news on the cliffhanger at the end of the last book as well.

NOTE: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I. AM. GOBSMACKED. Completely.

I never in a million years saw that coming. The red herrings were perfect in this one; I was led, hook, line, and sinker down the path the author wanted me led down and then WHAM, I was smacked with the truth. And it was GLORIOUS!!

This is easily my most favorite of this series. SO much fun and the end was quite nerve-racking.

Excellent read.

Harrison is now the person of interest. A coworker gets murdered at a giant company bonfire, and because of their history since boyhood, Harrison is the main suspect. Scarlett doesn't believe it, as he was with her the whole time. Except for a few minutes here and there.

Still love the friendship group in this, and the writing is engaging. I kept wanting to turn the page, even when my eyes were closing due to tiredness. Can't wait to see what happens next, as it left on a cliffhanger regarding Viv.

Scarlett, Vivian and Harrison are busy attempting to figure out another murder.

Scarlett who is on a year long no dating ritual, is having a hard time controlling her feelings for handsome Harrison.

Murder is again the topic of the sequal, from a company BBQ at Harrison's bosses house.

The story is not only comical, it's fascinating, romantic and of course very action packed as the momentum of the murder mystery picks up with every passing page.

Can't wait to dive in to the next book.

Copy Cap Murder is the fourth book in the A Hat Shop Mystery series. Another enjoyable visit with Scarlett, Vivian and their friends.

Scarlett and Vivian have been invited by Harrison Wentworth, their business manager, to a posh Guy Fawkes party at the home of his boss, Tyler Carson. While Harrison is off getting drink for him and Scarlett, Winston Dashavoy, a co-worker of Harrison's, approaches Scarlet and makes unwanted As the scar advances on her. Harrison catches the end of it and he and Winston get into a fight. Scarlett stops it bewitha fore too much damage is done to either of them.

It is time to light the bonfire and begin the firework and as the wheelbarrow with a straw man, representing Guy Fawkes, is brought out, it turns out to be the dead body of Winston. Naturally suspicion as to the killer of Winston immediately falls upon Harrison.

Scarlett and friends now begin to do their own investigation to clear Harrison's name. They soon find out that Winston was not well liked within the firm of Carson-Evers, that he was known to supply drugs to friends and suspected of having a romantic encounter with someone at Carson-Evers.

They need to put on thinking caps to find the killer before Harrison is arrested.

I'm not much into the millinery side of this series, but do have to take off my hat to Jenn McKinlay for providing us with a fun and exciting series.

Can't wait for the next book to see what is happening in the romance department for Scarlett and Vivian.

This is an enjoyable series, set in present-day London. Cousins Scarlett Parker and Vivian Tremont own a hat shop called Mim's Whims, and manage to involve themselves in one sticky situation after another. In this one, their business partner and financial advisor (and Scarlett's "next boyfriend"), Harrison Wentworth, is accused of strangling a co-worker at a Guy Fawkes Day bonfire celebration, after said co-worker takes liberties with Scarlett. The girls set out to prove that Harry is innocent, and encounter danger, intrigue and betrayal along the way. Jenn McKinlay writes many entertaining series, and this one even gives a little shout-out to her Library Lovers series.

A very witty and plain fun book to read. I just wish that I could come up with the quick comebacks that Scarlett and her cousin Viv do. No matter how insulting the person might be, they are able to come back with something that is not rude or vulgur and are really amusing! Oh, jealousy...!

Very much Recommended.

Oh how I love this series. Scarlett Parker and her cousin Vivian Tremont own a hat shop in London. They attend a party with their friends at the home of their friend Harrison's boss. At the party an old rival of Harrison's assaults Scarlett and Harrison gets into a fight defending her honor. But when the man shows up dead soon after, all signs point to Harrison. Scarlett makes it her mission to clear Harrison all the while trying to keep an ex girlfriend away from him.(Hands off Lady. He's Taken.) Scarlett is also trying to get Viv to tell her secret. Viv is being stubborn and I am kind of proud she held out as long as she did.

I love this series and just about anything written by Jenn McKinlay. I have yet to find a book of hers that I didn't love. I started the series earlier this year and have devoured it I love the setting of Portobello Road and all of the characters. They are so well written and are such likeable characters. I would love to have a Nick and Andre in my life. I could totally see myself being good friends with all of these characters. I also need Scarlett to lift her dating ban and just get with Harrison already. I definitely plan to read more in the series.

Bwahahaha - the zaniness persists and I like the way the romance is heating up. It's actually well developed in this series -- a really slow build rather than throwing in a gratuitous second guy to create the dreaded love triangle. I appreciate that so much. The mystery is solid with tons of leads and suspects and a killer surprise at the end. Wheeewwwww! On the #5

Not my cup of tea. Jenn McKinlay does two other series that I absolutely love. This book from the Hat Shop Mystery series just isn't one of my favorites. Since I've won this book from a giveaway I have tried to read it three other times. I just couldn't get through the first few chapters. Too much description, and it just didn't flow for me. It did get better toward the middle of the book, but still, I don't think I'll read others in this particular series. Why not give the series another chance? As I said in the beginning there are two other series that the author does that I love. I'm not exactly giving up on the author.

The setting is an American who's moved to London, England to run a hat shop with her cousin. Shortly after a tussle at a party she becomes involved the murder case of a man who assaulted her at that party. The ending of the murder case did surprise me, and I enjoyed it.

However ... In this book I didn't really care for the dialogue. The dialect/dialogue just didn't ring true to me. I'll grant you that I don't know a lot of British people. I have watched a lot of British/European television over the years however. (Courtesy of PBS.) I have also known/had a couple of friends from England and Europe. ... This particular book just seemed 'off' to me.

Perhaps I'm being too hard on this book. Not all books are to everyone's taste though. Don't let me stop you from giving it a try because You might love it. .... And, be sure to try the other books in Jenn's other series as well. Again, as I said earlier, I really enjoy those.

For my Cozy Mystery group, I needed to read a book that included my favorite cast of characters. This was a tough decision because there are so many good ones that I enjoy catching up with and watching their development as the series grows. I finally narrowed it down to two series and both just happened to be written by Jenn McKinlay. My other selection was her Cupcake Bakery Mystery.

Not only do I love the London setting, but the regular cast has won me over from the very start of this series. Scarlett cracks me up. I love her snark, her flaming red hair, but more importantly I love her interactions with Harry!! Their banter, undeniable attractions and adorable flirtations are perfection. I've claimed him as one of my bookish boyfriends and have been raving about him since 2014! Viv is the practical cousin. I love the descriptions of her hat creations and enjoyed trying to figure out the secrecy surrounding her marriage. Nick and Andre are the friends that I long to have. Doesn't hurt that they are always extra supportive and include food as their love language.

The mystery was great in this story. It was fast paced and centered around many suspects from Harry's law firm. It was interesting to see this other side of his life. There were plenty of suspects to sort through, an intense Guy Fawkes scare and even hints of dirty cops.

This ended up being a great seasonal read. I centered around Thanksgiving and Scarlett is definitely homesick throughout this story. The sweet ending left me smiling like a fool!! I look forward to reading book 5, looks like it will take place in Paris! #readforkimberly

Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot;
I see of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
- Traditional English rhyme

As autumn descends upon London, American expat Scarlet Parker prepares to celebrate Guy Fawkes instead of Thanksgiving. She relocated to the Notting Hill neighborhood to join her British cousin Vivian Tremont in the family business, Mim's Whim - a hat shop they both inherited from their grandmother. Vivian is the creative force behind the hat designs; Scarlet focuses on customer service, updates social media, and finds dead bodies along the way - this time, at the Guy Fawkes party.

The gang is back to help Scarlet track down the killer - Fiona (hat shop assistant), Nick (neighbor, dentist, and partner of Andre), Andre (neighbor, photographer, and partner of Nick), and, of course, Harrison, the shop's financial advisor who is now the murder suspect. COPY CAP MURDER follows the predictable path of cozy mysteries - red herrings, family secrets, and a dramatic unveiling of the real killer. What sets this book (and series) apart is the location - the cozy neighborhood of Notting Hill. What's not to love about the cobblestone streets, eclectic shops, and international food in the middle of London's hubbub? Likewise, McKinlay offers quirky characters (akin to Hugh Grant's Notting Hill) who deliver humorous quips throughout the story. Indeed, COPY CAT MURDER is a comfort read for those who enjoy British culture.

I purchased COPY CAP MURDER since I enjoyed the first three books in the series.

Scarlett Parker, the co-owner of the Mim's Whims hat shop with her cousin, Viv Tremont join their friends as they attend a local Bonfire Night event. For those of you less familiar with British lore, that is a holiday dedicated to Guy Fawkes failed atttempt at blowing up the Parliament. The party is being hosted by the company where their friend (and Scarlett's potential love interest) Harrison Wentworth. The company has invited everyone who is a client. After a short, uncomfortable interaction with one of the other employees, who is clearly drunk, things take a really awkward turn. The man is murdered and substituted for the effigy of Guy Fawkes.

Besides it being an uncomfortable situation for all, it is really a problem because Harrison is a likely suspect. He and his co-worker were rivals int he office. The fact that the man also hit on Scarlett, leading to a fight between the two men just before his disappearnace doesn't help.

As you can imagine, Scarlett can't help but get involved. She is already the veteran of helping to solve three other cases since first coming to London just eight months ago. The problem is that as she digs deeper into the goings on at the company, she is clearly setting herself and those around her at danger.

This was really another interesting addition to the series. McKinlay has quickly become my favorite author among the cozy writers I read. I am definitely looking forward to more books in the series. It seems the next one will bring these fun characters to Paris!

Star rating: 4 - 4-5 Stars

While celebrating Guy Fawkes Night with her friends and colleagues, Scarlett is assaulted by her love interest's rival; Winthrop Dashavoy. In an attempt to protect her from his wandering hands, Harrison gets into a tussle with Win and comes out none the worse for wear. Then, only a short while later, Win is found strangled to death with a Guy Fawkes mask on and Harrison finds himself the prime suspect. Determined to prove Harrison is innocent, Scarlett, her cousin Viv and their good friends Nick, Andre and Fee decide to do everything in their power to prove Harrison's innocence. Even if it means putting themselves in harms way.

Another amazing novel in Jen McKinlay's Hat Shop series! The main characters in these novels are just too much fun. I love how Scarlett is so fiery and vivacious, while her cousin Viv is more introverted and artistic. It makes for fun reading and interesting dynamics. Scarlett's relationship in this novel with Harrison takes a few steps forward even though she's still determined to keep her goal of being celibate for one year. The only problems I had with this novel that knocked it down from 5 stars to 4, was the tarnishing of Inspector Franks' character and Viv's inability to vocalize to whom she is married to. Those two things got under my skin a little too much for me to capitulate and round up to 5 stars. But you can be sure I'll pick up the next novel in this series to see what happens next!

Must say this is my least favorite, so far, in this series. The mystery was so over-the-top that I found myself rolling my eyes numerous times. I know the characters in cozies are "nosy", pretty much by definition, but Scarlett & Viv seemed to take it to extremes. Judging from the many great reviews of this one by people whose opinions I generally share, maybe I just wasn't really in the mood for this one. I don't know. Anyway, got tired of Scarlett's guesses about Viv's "secret" husband, and am glad to see that the next in the series will be dealing with that. Also glad to see the end to Scarlett's "no dating for a year" schtick. It got old half way through the first book, so to say it was more than tiresome into the 4th book is an understatement! Will be on hand for #5 because Jenn McKinlay is such a good writer and I do want to find out about Viv's hubby!

These cozy crimes just keep getting better. I started reading McKinley's Cupcake Bakery series and was instantly hooked. Now I can't get enough and when I found the Hat shop series, well, let's just say my bank account got snookered! This one focuses on Harrison and I quite enjoyed that. I don't know if I like the "whole I can't have a boyfriend for a year but look he's so right" relationship or lack of one between Scarlett and him. First she doesn't like him and now because she's taken a year man free all of a sudden he's all she can think of. Still good little mystery and throughly enjoyed Viv, Fee, Andre and Nick as well.

Ms. McKinlay has done it again, I loved this book, as I have every one that she has written. The hat shop is set in England on Portobello Road and every time I read this series I feel as if I am there. Harrison takes the gang to a Guy Fawkes party thrown by his boss. From there begins a mystery with twists and turns that kept me guessing up until Scarlett figured it out, and what an ending, I was on the edge of my seat. All the old friends are back in this story, but if you've never read the series I don't think that you will have a problem reading it as a stand alone. My only regret is that I have to wait until the next in the series comes out.
