English review: The second arc of the series, The Slave Arc, represents a huge shift in the story's pacing, atmosphere, and character philosophy. Most revenge stories usually end with the death of one or both involved parties; this arc continues the tale beyond that point.
The Thorfinn we meet in this part of the story is unrecognizable. He is empty inside, devoid of any desires, and consumed by regret. His life’s progression is somewhat poetic. In this arc, he learns how hard it is to clear a forest, plow the land, practice farming, and understand the immense effort required to build and maintain a farm—after having spent most of his life destroying other people’s farms and villages.
He also encounters a victim of these Viking raids: Einar, an Englishman kidnapped and enslaved after a Danish army destroyed his village and killed his family. Einar is the exact kind of person created by a warrior like Thorfinn.
The pacing of this arc is very slow. In terms of action, the story doesn’t progress much, but we see tremendous development in the protagonist. Thorfinn finally begins to understand the pacifist philosophy adopted by his father and starts to resemble him more and more in this volume.
Several new and interesting characters are introduced, including Einar (mentioned earlier), Snake (whom I hope to see more of in the future), Ketil (Thorfinn’s owner and the farm’s proprietor), Sverkel (Ketil’s father), and Thorgil (Ketil’s eldest son, a warrior akin to Thorkell).
Ketil’s farm’s growth and prosperity draw the attention of King Canute (Knut), who is busy consolidating his reign. This brings him into conflict with Thorfinn. Their contrasting visions of building an earthly paradise culminate in a discussion between the two, which stands out as the most impactful scene in the entire series so far.
With the conclusion of this narrative arc, the stage is set for the journey and colonization of Vinland, though the mission will not be an easy one. Between Thorfinn’s emancipation and the actual journey lies a third arc, which I’m currently reading and which has plenty to offer as well.

Yo no tengo enemigos

"Yo no tengo enemigos". Gracias.

The Thorfinn drama is back! I've been missing this side of Thorfinn for awhile. While he has changed drastically from the first volume, we still see his intense fire, grit and determination. I loved the way this farm arc ended.

And the last two chapters were just too cute! A totally different vibe from the beginning. It ended with me intensely curious where the plot will go from here.

I missed this manga, it's good to be back... Vinland saga was one of the best seinen readings I've had in 2014 or so, But today I see the problems in the story. Thorfinn's dream is something impossible to achieve, this manga is not a battle shonen with that shonen jump vibe...so no one needs to be fooled into think that thorfinn's goal will actually be what he wants. Because of that read all this journey seems that can be a waste of time.

In my opinion this journey is a bad choice, which can lead to a path with many unnecessary slice of life scenes, with no way back changing the weight of the story.

But now that I'm back I will continue to see how far this "thorfinn looking for the OnePiece" phase goes hoping for the best.

Slavery Arc ✅

Amazing. And soo different from the first arc, it's astounding how much variety Vinland Saga covers in both it's storytelling structure and exploration of the core-themes!

This was such a cute chapter later on! It ends the farm saga, as we have them running away, THORFINN thinks to himself he should talk with Canute to solve the matter of the farm and help out the Ketils and he talks with him after taking a 100 hits and it was something and everyone who saw it there respected Thorfinn after it, his negotiations don't go well as we see the ambitiousness of Canute and how he wants to create a paradise for his vikings and then we have Thorfinn changing his stance in the sense he doesn't wanna fight because it leads to nothing and he says then he will run far away and create a paradise. A Vinland for people who don't wanna fight and they bid each other farewell and he returns to Iceland to his home for one of the greatest reunions ever and his sister Ylfa is the best lmao! Great volume and the manga is even better now!

This entry follows my review of the first volume, which took into account volumes 1 to 6. Spoilers for what happened in those volumes.

I left Thorfinn, the guy who saw his father get killed by a mercenary band, having joined that same mercenary band in order to one day become stronger and kill its leader. He isn’t precisely sneaky about it: he regularly challenges the leader, Askeladd, to a duel in order to end his life. Thorfinn’s Nordic honor won’t allow him to kill the guy any other way. Askeladd keeps him around not only because the protagonist is extremely talented, but because he came to regret having killed his father, whom he considers a very honorable man. They roam Britain representing Denmark’s army, that historically attempted to invade the land. We follow them around as they fight vicious foes (which include vikings who sided with the English when they realized the locals were going to lose; those vikings wanted a challenge). Along the way they meet Canute, the youngest son of the king of Denmark. That son, a shy weakling, had been sent to the battlefield for the chance of him getting killed and therefore off the succession line. The mercenary band we are following captures an English town, and to avoid any of them alerting their pursuers of the mercenary band’s position, they murder everybody.

Plenty of great stuff happened during the rest of that arc, which ended around 5 or 6 volumes before volume 14. .

Now comes my favorite part of that arc. .

The next arc opens with Einar, a British slave sent to Denmark, being bought by the wealthy owner of numerous farming lands. He’s told that if he manages to clear a forest and farm the cleared lands enough, he’ll be able to buy his freedom back. The other slave working in that forest is .

The author introduces plenty of characters: the family that owns the farms, the numerous guards with their different responsibilities, personalities and talents, other slaves, etc. You get to care about their troubles and their hopes. At one point, the owner of the farm, along with his sons, .

Our protagonist Thorfinn .

Through this arc, one of the slaves .

In most fiction you tend to get watered down moral dilemmas that despite the artifice you clearly know which side is better. In “Vinland Saga” I was there with the characters as they faced the hope of breaking the circle of violence, yet not knowing how to face the fact that despite their wish to solve problems without violence, other people would use violence against them. To what extent is it right to defend yourself and the people you care about? Is it truly possible to build a country without war nor slavery of some kind? Are war and violence innate to human beings, as a constant state of war is the norm in nature? So on and so on.

I already mentioned in my previous review, but I must praise again the quality and subtlety of the drawings. As the characters struggle through extremely well plotted conflicts and dilemmas, you can see on their faces the complex thoughts and emotions they are processing. Lesser authors and artists would have told you straight what was on those characters’ minds, and still wouldn’t have come close to reproducing the impressions that many of these scenes left me with.

Isayama, the creator of “Attack on Titan”, mentioned this series as one of his favorites. The influence, and even downright borrowing of some aspects, is evident. Thorfinn’s “birth” as a wrathful, vengeful character. The very phrase of “I killed beasts dressed as humans” that Eren uses in the sixth episode of the first season. The idea of the cycle of violence that needs to be broken, one of the central aspects of “Attack on Titan”. The imagery of warriors standing over mountains of corpses belonging to the people they’ve managed to kill either directly or through their decisions. There were some other clear influences that I can’t recall at the moment. Unfortunately it makes "Attack on Titan" look like a lesser version of a very similar attempt. It doesn't help that the drawings in "Vinland Saga" are far, far better.

Beyond my personal preferences that lead me to consider some series better than others, for example that I don’t care for vikings in general, I must admit that “Vinland Saga” is the best series I’ve read in a long, long time. Even better than “Berserk”, another extremely ambitious long-form narrative. “Berserk” shits itself shortly after the grand arc about the second Eclipse finishes; its author shifted the series to a conflicting genre (high fantasy as opposed to pitch dark fantasy, which is how that series started), and as a consequence I could no longer believe most of the threats the characters faced, and some of the decisions seemed tacked on, just because “they needed to be there”. There’s none of that in “Vinland Saga”: the characters are extremely compelling and distinct, they go through believable arcs, and their moral dilemmas are understandable and interesting. Thorfinn himself started out as a hopeful, adventurous but naive child, but he turned into a wrathful, vengeful killing machine with no regard for others nor his own future, then into a depressed husk of a human being with no idea about how to deal with other people, then into a wise monk-like figure, someone who appreciates the people around him and even works to build a peaceful community.

For years I overlooked “Vinland Saga”, despite the high ratings, because I didn’t give a damn about vikings. Don’t make my mistake, and read this series.

This is the best volume so far, one of the best ending for a story arc. Since this is the end of the slave arc, gonna discuss more about this volume. I hate Ketil for being a coward, and Thorgil for being such a cruel guy. The character I love most is Roald, he's loyal towards Ketil even though that stupid man is weak and made stupid decisions. He is rational and handsome too, he treated Thorfinn and Einar well. Thorfinn, oh thorfinn, he is a warrior now, saying no to violence and willing to negotiate with Canute about the farm. I'm glad that his speech sorta woke Canute from his evil plans, and now he has became a better king, I guess. Thorfinn's bruised face was the best part, hahah! Ylfa's treatment towards Thorfinn really cracks me up. Great and heart-warming ending for this arc, Cheers!

Bello, bello, BELLO.

Here's the end of the arc and it was pretty good in my opinion.

This volume had some ups and downs for me. It was very entertaining and satisfactory till the end but i'm not convince with Canute's actions at the very end, i don't know, it felt to easy and fast but we'll see.

The last chapter was very endearing and funny and long awaited for me. I'm very pleased with this arc and can't wait to see what's next for Thorfinn and Einar.

Yup, just a meh ending to me. Incredibly verbose volume with no meaningful action, as if Yukimura have run out of ideas how to resolve the whole arc in a more creative way than a series of deep conversations and time skips. Words, words, words...

The 100-punch face-off was just plainly ridiculous. Thorfinn acting like Jesus Christ, as everyone else watches in confusion and admiration... kinda cringey. The vibes have indeed become so biblical at some point it got me wishing we were finished with the sermons and could go back to the earlier, more thrilling stuff.

The Canute scene was interesting not so much for what was spoken but for how it revealed the extent of his mental disturbance. I didn't notice before how much he was becoming affected by this whole psychotic thing. I didn't think he was leaning so much towards that Sweyn's voice in his head – I thought he was resisting it or tolerating its presence. But the twink really has become so alienated, scared and paranoid that his subconsciousness was urging him to get a guy killed just for voicing criticism.

But then what happened afterwards was not really convincing to say the least. Basically Canute after a transformative conversation with Jesus Christ Our Saviour undergoes a change of heart, backtracks on his former plans and eschews his tyrannical ways. Somehow even though the first time Canute changed so drastically was equally rapid, it still felt more natural than this.

And then we just get lots of panels of happy people either smiling, shaking hands, crying tears of joy, and just generally being content with their new lives, like in a Jehowah's Witnesses' booklet. Oh, and we get to see Thorfinn's annoying tomboy sister being annoying. She is about the last character in this story that I missed.

I'm all for Thorfinn learning how to de-escalate conflicts and live peacefully. I don't mind if it means less action. I just think his new journey can be written in a much more compelling way than whatever's going on in here.

The slave arc was a raw and difficult arc to digest but it also had beautiful and brilliant moments Thorfinn's change was beautiful how Einar's friendship and the kindness of other endearing characters helped a lot in Thorfinn's development and gave him a purpose to live and they showed him another way of life, the reunion with King Canute was incredibly beautiful (we also have the highlight of both the manga and the anime, Canute's laughter and the appreciation he still has for Thorfinn), that last chapter of Iceland was very beautiful, the perfect way to end the arc and this Vol.

As a reply to my thoughts in the previous volume: I am going to live. Volume 14 marks the culmination of Thorfinn’s long, painful journey from vengeance to peace. "I have no enemies," isn’t just a moral stance, but the rebirth of a boy who once lived only to kill. Plus, his reunion with Canute is both poignant and profound. Thorfinn still remembers Canute’s words from years ago and Canute showing rare cheerfulness at their meeting speaks to the quiet intimacy of their bond. In that conversation, both find clarity: one letting go of power, the other of hate. They're so gay!

And finally, Thorfinn returns to Iceland. Not as a warrior drenched in blood, but as a man who has chosen to build, not destroy. It’s the homecoming of someone truly free.
