Tenryu knows Shino isn't ready for commitment, but does Shino himself know that he isn't ready? Meanwhile, Nikaya must confront his relationship problems without the advice of his father. He finally gets some quality time with Fuse, but runs the risk of messing up his one chance to show him how he really feels. Relationships are a touchy situation, especially when you are not sure about being in one...
She was born on September 30th, 1957, in Kanuma City, Tochigi prefecture. In 1979, she debuted with "Akai Shop" in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume. At first, she was mainly published by Hakusensha. The sequel to her big hit "Hana no Asukagumi!," named "Shin Hana no Asukagumi!," is currently very popular!
This series is giving me whiplash. After the big disappointment of volume 2, this one was almost 4 stars? It had a lot more of the character- and story-focused tone I was looking for, with some serious conversations and actual reflections on the relationships being developed.
There were a few dips still, like Shino claiming he'd never had his heart broken, when...he's been single for 17 years because his pregnant high school girlfriend ran off with their baby? He still calls her his "wife" and the love of his life and told his son he never planned to be with anyone again because she'd been it for him. So how is that not counting as having your heart broken?
Other things I'd been irritated by were actually dealt with in this volume, though, like the grandmother coming back into play, and more information coming out about Tenryu's ex-wife, and the daughter she doesn't want him to see anymore. I still think his dynamic with Nakaya is kind of weird - he had that one good advice-giving session where he told Nakaya to be a kid and enjoy his time with his dad, but every time it's come up since, it's like he's been trying to drive a weird wedge between Shino and Nakaya. Jealousy, maybe, since his family life got destroyed? And he's stated outright that he won't be marrying a woman again, because he doesn't want more kids (and more heartbreak, probably).
It becomes very clear that there's no love triangle or love square or whatever going on in this series, since the only time Shino expresses interest in anyone is with Tenryu. They have a few interesting interactions that finally start to heighten their actual chemistry, but fortunately they don't dive fully into anything...because in this series I'm starting to feel kinda wary of the whole dubcon/noncon issue. So far it's getting pulled back from that as Tenryu fights with his own messy feelings, complicated by his bitter divorce, so hopefully it stays that way and Shino's able to make a move in his own time.
The relationship with Nakaya and Akihi is interesting, too, because they do have a significant age and experience gap, and the realities of that situation aren't being ignored. Akihi is a bit older and also secure in his sexuality, while Nakaya is brimming with hormones and curiosity - ready to talk a big game but not quite so prepared to deal with the consequences of diving all the way in. I like that he wants to ask his dad for advice, even though they're new in each other's lives, and I wish there was more focus on that relationship, instead of this whole "every VA at work is gay" deal that's occupying so much of Shino's time.
I did like that Mizusawa openly proclaims that he's bisexual, and explains that his roommate is really just a roommate, so that finally clears up those confusing rumors, which I thought were a dropped plot thread.
I figure it's probably heading into a side pairing with him and the grumpy new VA who just got dumped by his boyfriend, which is kinda meh, but I did enjoy the drunken conversations among the four VAs at the hot springs. I like those bonding, getting-to-know-you scenes, where character development takes the forefront.
This actually wasn't a bad volume at all, but it almost feels like this series is being written by committee or something...if it stuck to this voice throughout, it could be a pretty decent story. (I am still so, so confused by the author end notes, but maybe I should just start ignoring those.)
Third in a five part series about a long-separated father and son getting to know each other while trying to deal with new relationships.[return][return]Nakaya's got a bad crush on the ice hockey coach, and tries to do something about it. He ends up asking his father's advice on what happens if you find yourself attracted to another man -- but Shino's struggling with the same question himself. Shino's colleague Tenryu has made his own feelings clear, and Shino's found himself responding.[return][return]After finishing the first half of their current anime series the voice actors go for a weekend break at a spa resort, giving ample opportunity for squabbling and seduction attempts -- none of which go according to plan. By the end of the book Shino faces the fact that he might finally be falling in love again, for the first time since he lost Nakaya's mother.[return][return]As with the first two books in the series, it's more about the story than the sex -- this volume does ramp up the steaminess, but the men and the book don't go all the way. There's some nice foreplay and kissing, but the real joy is in the humour and the way the various relationships develop. It's gentle but it's not pure fluff -- for example, Tenyru's dealing with a nasty divorce and faces losing contact with his daughter -- which makes it all the better.[return][return]It's possible to follow the plot in this one with just a synopsis of the previous volumes, but I'd strongly recommend reading the first two volumes first -- you'll get a lot more out of it if you've already got to know the characters.
This is as far as I got, and I ever intend to get, with this series. My main problem is that the most likely match for Shino is a complete ass who has abandoned his own kid (and yeah, his ex-wife is encouraging this, but please) and keeps trying to drive a wedge between Shino and his son, presumably so his seduction can go ahead unopposed. None of Shino's other suitors are any more mentally stable or capable of socially acceptable behavior either. I know it's supposed to be cute, but I just want to scream for Shino to run and find someone halfway normal.
