Elizabeth Heiter returns with her third installment in The Profiler series (nicely researched) with SEIZED -Evelyn Baine, profiler for the FBI – finds herself in one of the most dangerous situations yet, with what appeared to be "survivalist cult" holed up in the mountains—turns deadly.
Evelyn is sharp and she knows how to think like a killer – whether a serial killer, arsonists, bomb-maker, child abductor or terrorist, as she has crawled around in all of the twisted minds. She had learned their fantasies, and figured out their next moves and chased them down. But no matter how many she found, there were always more. She is a non-conformist and does not always follow the rules. (I like this).
Having read the previous books in The Profiler series (highly recommend) in order to learn more about Evelyn and the motivation behind the woman-- both personally, and professionally:
In Book # 1 HUNTED , we meet Evelyn Baine, a profiler for the FBI’s elite Behavioral Analysis Unit. She has wanted this job since she was a child, when her best friend disappeared. She is sent to Bakersville, Virginia and comes head to head with a serial killer who is hunting her. She tracks down a deadly serial killer known as the Bakersville Burier and learned just how deadly it can be to get inside the head of a killer.
In Book #2 VANISHED she returns to her home town for another child abduction case in Rose Bay, South Carolina for a suspense psychological mystery thriller with a mixture of light romance and intrigue. Evelyn has waited for this case her entire life after the disappearance of her best friend—when the Nursery Rhyme Killer resurfaced after eighteen years of silence.
In Book # 3 SEIZED, the intensity heats up! Evelyn returns with fellow agent Kyle McKenzie taking them to a remote area of Montana wilderness.
Lee Cartwright had been convicted of bombing two black churches and one mosque. People had died and dozens were injured. He was seeking notoriety. Evelyn is profiling him in the Montana State Prison. He was an anti-federalist. He had told officials he had a copycat, and the FBI wanted to find out if it was true.
Dan Moore, FBI had sent her, because she is on his shit list. A suitable punishment for not following orders on her last case. She was not a team player. Now she has to determine if this guy is telling the truth.
From brain washing, cults, survivalists, home grown terrorism-----Evelyn is sent to check out a dangerous cult of survivalist in the Montana mountains in a compound. What appears to be a routine investigation lands her on the wrong side of a hostage situation and in the middle of an emerging terrorist threat. The cult leader Butler has a score to settle with the FBI. A terrorist.
In addition to the physical dangers, Evelyn has her own internal decisions and crossroads. Does she continue with her position at the FBI or is something else on the horizon?
The one driving force in her career had been her need to solve her friend’s case. However, she learns there are a lot of people out there with their own Cassie's. People with someone dead or missing from their lives, people who needed closure, and Evelyn would give it to them.
It was nice revisiting with Granny Mabel, the woman who had stood behind her, now in a nursing home in SC. Fans of Allison Brennan, Tami Hoag, Catherine Coulter, and Lisa Jackson will enjoy the gripping series.
Sounds as though Evelyn will return for #4 for a brand-new adventure and more to come with Kyle! Recommend reading all the books in the series. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Beginning: 12/29-1/22. Read One Chapter Per Day. What a cool idea! Fun, Fun. Read, discuss, share! Love and vengeance
FBI profiler Evelyn Baine and fellow agent Kyle McKenzie are—secretly—on vacation together, visiting an island off the coast of Georgia. Evelyn has recently solved a notorious cold case, so she considers their holiday a reward of sorts. More than that, it's a cautious acknowledgment of her growing feelings for Kyle.
One day a body washes up on the beach, a body that's been disfigured. The killer has carved the word "pervert" into the victim's stomach. A second murder, with the victim labeled a "killer" appears soon after. The police don't agree when Evelyn tells them the murders look like the work of a vigilante trying to avenge…something.
Evelyn and Kyle find their own lives at risk as they move closer to the truth.

This was definitely an entertaining read, unfortunately there wasn't enough character development and engagement to make me care about Evelyn and the important people in her life. Although this is part of a series I read it as a stand alone, which the author suggests is fine. There was plenty of action and mystery surrounding the plot. Evelyn is a brilliant FBI profiler, but in this book she's distracted and unsure of herself most of the time. This definitely didn't sit well with me, because even when she was figuring things out her lack of confidence stalled her.
The plot was engaging because I really enjoy learning about and understanding cults. The action was realistic, but definitely had it's share of heart racing moments. The book used alot of FBI abbreviations describing different personnel and roles within the FBI. The abbreviations were distracting because they were used infrequently, so you forget what they mean. There is a glossary defining the abbreviations, but having to stop and look through definitely would take away from the enjoyment of the book.
Overall despite the books flaws I did enjoy it. The pacing was good and the ending had a twist I wasn't expecting. Despite my low rating I would suggest this book to people who enjoy thrillers involving the FBI. However this just wasn't a good fit for my reading preference, despite my interest in cults and psychology. What I enjoy most about books is there emotional impact and ability to connect with the reader, and I didn't find it here.
I received a copy of this e-book from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
This is book three in The Profiler series, and it finds Evelyn unusually listless and adrift. After solving the one case her entire life revolved around, the kidnapping and murder of her best friend, in book two, she now finds herself at a loss and without a clear purpose. Even Evelyn's relationship with Kyle is suffering. After finally giving in and accepting his vacation invitation and enjoying just being with him, she now seems to be pulling away.
As a form of punishment for refusing to follow orders in book two, Evelyn is being sent on pesky mundane assignments. Following one of these in Montana, Evelyn is approached by a fellow agent and asked to take a brief ride along to check out and profile a survivalist cult holed up in the mountains. Evelyn goes even though it is against her better judgement but soon wishes she hadn't when she and the other agent are taken hostage by the group. She is quickly isolated and used for leverage when the FBI surrounds the compound. Kyle's HRT team is part of the force waiting for an opportunity to breach the walls and get Evelyn and the other agent out.
Evelyn is held captive for days, and even after her rescue, she has no time to reconnect with Kyle because one of her primary captors is dead and one escaped. The manhunt is on, and the stakes are high since Evelyn suspects the escapee has a series of terrorist attacks planned. Despite her lingering doubts about her job, Evelyn throws herself one hundred percent into the chase. In the meantime, Kyle is injured, and Evelyn has to choose between him and her job. She has no idea what she wants, and there is no way to know if she will decide before the terrorist catches up with her.
Like the first two books, this story kept up a great pace and a suspenseful atmosphere. It was much less about Evelyn and Kyle than the previous book and more about Evelyn's conflicts with her job. I enjoyed it and can't wait to see what comes next for these characters.
This is a very entertaining installment in the Profiler series. In this one Evelyn finds herself in a hostage situation at a survivalist compound. The first half is about her time as a hostage and the second half is about her race to find her captor before he carries out his overall agenda.I found both equally exciting. Evelyn is a very relatable character, she makes mistakes, is awkward at times in social situations but is a top knotch profiler. Watching her unravel the clues to solve the case is fascinating. The only part of this book I didn't like is how she was treated by her colleagues after she was rescued. That part seemed off to me. Otherwise I highly recommend this series, but they must be read in order for character development purposes.
Elizabeth Heiter gets better and better with each book. This book reaches out and grabs you from page one. Evelyn Baine, an FBI profiler, begins a rather benign investigation, but is kidnapped. The story is told so you see everything through the eyes of the profiler, Evelyn. What is real, what is not? Who can you trust? This is a hard one to put down. Just when you think you have it figured out, there is another twist and off you go in another direction. You live through the nightmare with her looking for answers and looking to find the killer before Evelyn, herself, is a victim.
She's back. Well, sort of. Evelyn spent almost two decades devoting all of her time to discovering what happened to her childhood best friend, Cassie, and now she's accomplished that goal. Cassie is finally at peace and the murderer has paid for his crimes. But without that focus, she's not really sure who she is now, because solving that case consumed her whole life and she isn't sure how to just be Evelyn. Her personal life, with HRT agent, Kyle, is going well and they even went on vacation together. *Yay! I love them as a couple.* But Kyle knows there's something different about Evelyn. Her passion for the job is gone and she's just going through the motions now. Her boss, Dan, is essentially punishing her for not following his orders on a recent case, and is giving her assignments that aren't equal with her expertise and she's not even fighting it. Kyle knows that's not his Evelyn, yet he also knows she needs to work through this herself, but he'll be right there beside her whenever she needs him.
Psst...she's going to need him very soon. After leaving the Montana State Prison after an interview with Lee Cartwright, a convicted bomber, Evelyn is surprised by a visit from Jen Martinez, a local FBI agent. Jen has suspicions about the Butler Compound, yet no one has taken her theory seriously. Yeah, they really should've. After Jen convinces Evelyn to make a quick visit to the compound with her just to see if she's completely off base, Jen and Evelyn become hostages. Evelyn, after witnessing Jen being shot by Wade Butler, the alleged leader, is held prisoner for almost two weeks. However, she realizes things aren't adding up to equal this group being just a religious cult. As Kyle and his HRT team are brought in, quickly discovering Evelyn is inside the compound as well, Evelyn is able to share some information with the team and alert them that something else is going on and because she believes there's a terrorist group inside the cult. Well that is definitely one way to disguise your true motives. Unfortunately, Evelyn is also second guessing her abilities to due her job.
Now Evelyn needs to trust in herself, help solve the puzzle of the true origins and leadership of the compound, determine where the next bombing will be and who the bombers are, decide if she wants to stay in the BAU, and fix the distance she put between herself and Kyle. Yes, she has feelings for him and wants to be with him, but I personally think she's scared. Will the real Evelyn reemerge and straighten out both her personal and professional lives? Will she again help put the bad guys away? We all know she has the ability, the natural talent, needed to succeed at her job, but will she regain that confidence in herself? *Things that make you go hmmm. You're welcome for that earworm. LOL If you're too young to recognize that song, I'm going to go curl up into a ball now and bemoan my old age. ;-)*
I highly recommend this series. I do suggest you read the books in order though to experience the full enjoyment of the stories and for the sake of continuity.

Amazing book..This is the third in the Profiler Series by Elizabeth Heiter. Twist and turns this book was just wonderful. I just was at the edge of my seat..Turning the pages so quickly.
Profiler Evelyn Baine is just leaving the prison after interviewing a prisoner..She didn't get what she needed, and feeling pretty low all she wants to do is go home. The next thing she knows is she's going to check out some compound with a FBI agent who wants her help..Agent Jen Martinez tells her what's happening at this compound.. and Evelyn agrees to go..even though she isn't quite sure why she's going. When things don't go as planned they find themselves in a situation. It doesn't go well..The cult leader wants answers, and when he doesn't get them he isn't about to let them leave.
The next thing HRT..the Hostage Reacue Team is called in..there job is to get in and save Evelyn and Jen, but find something out before going in. The neogations with the leader aren't good, and it could mean the death of the agents. What comes next will shock you..
A nail biting book...Highly recommend this book, and the series..Hunted and Vanished start the series..
Elizabeth Heiter gives us yet another intense reading experience in Seized. I love the chemistry that is created by Evelyn Baine with whomever she encounters. There are so many relationships that are developed in this book which cause her to question her skills as a profiler. With multiple twists and turns and relationships to question, this book pulled me in on page one and I couldn't put it down once I started (except to watch a KU basketball game). I felt like I knew the characters (especially since I had met some of them through reading Hunted and Vanished - which you should read also if you have not already), so as they got into different situations throughout the book, I found myself getting very stressed out hoping they would get out of them. I won't tell you how it comes out, but I will tell you that I had to soak the intensity off in my hot tub after I was finally able to put the book down... only because I had finished reading it. Thank you for another great adventure with Evelyn and her crew, Elizabeth. I look forward to STALKED!!!

*My Thoughts*
Seized is the third installment in author Elizabeth Heiter's The Profiler series. Picking up where Vanished left off, FBI Special Agent & criminal profiler Evelyn Baine is in a funk. Every since she found the Nursery Rhyme killer who took and killed her best friend Cassie Byers 18 years ago, she's been picking up fairly mundane cases thanks to disobeying her bosses orders. One of those mundane cases sends Evelyn to visit a convicted bomber in a Montana Prison. This mundane case, turns into so much more after a fellow FBI Agent Jen Martinez asks her to come and visit a compound that she believes is up to no good.
In Seized, the third installment in Elizabeth Heiter'sThe Profiler series, FBI agent Evelyn Baine is kidnapped and held hostage by a survivalist cult.
Now she has solved the kidnapping case that drove her to become a profiler, Evelyn is at a crossroads. She feels adrift and cannot decide whether she wants to continue her career in the FBI while at the same time, the thought of leaving fills her with panic. She is plagued with self-doubt and she cannot help but question her ability to accurately profile the cases she is reviewing. When fellow FBI agent Jen Martinez approaches her with her suspicions that a local cult is a terrorist threat, Evelyn is reluctant to become involved but Jen leaves her no choice but to agree. What should have been a quick assessment rapidly turns deadly when Jen is shot by cult leader Ward Butler and Evelyn is held hostage at the cult's compound.
At first, Evelyn is just trying to survive the situation but once she realizes the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) has been called in, she pushes aside her alarm to try to give the team as much information as possible. She also tries to use her profiling skills to assess Butler and another cult member, Rolfe. She is conflicted by the men's actions which in makes her very indecisive about her profile. Evelyn's panic also makes her feel like she is missing vital clues that could help her nail down the profile but her fears for her safety make it impossible for her to impartially gauge the increasingly volatile situation.
Once Evelyn is rescued by HRT, she is officially assigned to the case but she still remains uncertain of her profile. Things move at a breakneck speed when another threat is uncovered and someone she cares for is injured in the line of duty. Evelyn is also in the unusual position of following a case through to the end and she feels pressured to commit to her assessment of the main suspect. At the same time, she is still trying to evade a confrontation with her boss about the future of her career.
Seized is a suspense-laden and intriguing thriller that has an unusual but compelling storyline. Evelyn still continues to be a multi-faceted character who has been shaped by her past but is trying to come to terms with the fact that this no longer defines her. Elizabeth Heiter does a wonderful job keeping the series fresh by focusing this latest installment on a terrorist cult instead of the usual murder and/or kidnapping storyline. Appealing characters, an unique but relevant plot and plenty of action make this newest addition to The Profiler series an aboslute must read for fans of the mystery/suspense genre.
Seized by Elizabeth Heiter If you want a tense, electrifying read, this is the book to read! Elizabeth has penned a story of non- stop intrigue and suspense from start to finish. How can Evelyn Baine, a profiler who seems to have lost her desire to do her job find it to help stop homegrown terrorists from bombing targets in the U.S? It is a nail biting read from the very first to the very last page. It will leave you wanting more stories from Elizabeth on the profilers.
WOW, hold on to your hats. This is a fast moving story. Elizabeth Heiter has once again given the reader a wild ride, that keeps you turning the pages till the end . Evelyn is a wonderful character and you just want to root her on. Great plot and very intense which only spurs your interest for the next book in the series. If I wasn't a fan before this book would have nailed that down. Make sure you have time to sit and read because you won't want to put it down once you start.
This ending was just a tad bit rushed, but still good all the same. So good though, keeps you guessing for a majority of the book. One of the best things about this series (besides the fact that it's like reading an episode of Criminal Minds) is these books stand alone pretty well. You don't necessarily have to read them in order to get the whole story. Hopefully she writes more, but doesn't over do it.
I've really looked forward to the opportunity to read a book by this author, and was very pleased, when Harlequin sent a copy of it to me via NetGalley. Even though this is a book three in a series, it didn't take away from the story, that is easy to be read as a standalone book. The story is a fascinating look into the professional life of the FBI profiler. In a rather dark and sinister tone, the world of no mercy, constantly overworked agents are trying to live without any human errors, that could put others in danger, and avoid any feelings that would prove them to be vulnerable. Almost in a documentary style written tale, that has great attention to even the smallest details, and seems very lifelike, the agents seek after clues, come up with theories, and test their likelihood. The action in the story is sparse, as theory, tips, proof is sought by investigation into the past. The dialog is scarce, as well, and very much focused only on the task at hand. The case under investigation comes too close to home several times with the different alphabet soup agencies on the task force, yet these cold professionals are able to close their emotions deep inside of them. The thought-provoking possibilities of the terrorist attacks are chilling, and possibility of one of their own being involved, horrifying. The story proceeds and flow in a good speed. There are twists in the plot, events that are unexpected, and gripping. As the story is so detailed and true to life like in its telling, I was surprised couple times by a plot twist, that, to me, seemed an unlikely event. But I will save you from any spoilers. Overall, I found the case the FBI was working on, fascinating and was absorbed in it. I usually like a little more personal life and emotions inserted into the story as well, not just suspense, as this one is, maybe more emotion could have brought more intensity to the tale as well. Evelyn is at a crossroads in her life, and she has a colleague, she has deeper feelings towards, but those points are more of a side note in the story. A scarp, analytical, and eerie story of the reality we seem to live in these days ~ Four Spoons
Elizabeth Heiter's books are getting better and better! I loved The Hunted, Vanished was good too but Seized?? Oh man! I started reading this last night, thinking I would just get about 10 percent in and find a good stopping place. NO SUCH THING. It just keeps going, the action building so much I could hardly breathe. I made myself put the book down at midnight, but then picked it right back up as soon as I awoke.
I'm really liking getting to know FBI profiler Evelyn Baine. She's a complicated character with a lot of layers, more revealed every book. After solving the case that made her want to be a Profiler, Evelyn finds herself at a crossroads in the FBI-- should she stay or should she go? Had she accomplished her life's dream, or was there more to explore and look forward to? And did the BAU even WANT her?
While performing a routine and honestly menial task for the BAU director, Evelyn is on her way home to face the music-- would she stay at the BAU or move on?- she is approached by a fellow Regional Agent and asked to accompany her to check out a perceived threat.
And this is where things get crazy. The two are taken hostage and the scene turns into what could be WACO II. The suspense, the pressure, the fear is palpable with every turn of the page, and reading along as Evelyn solved the case was both entertaining and educational.
This read went SUPER fast, and was most enjoyable. I already can't wait for the next book!

Although I enjoyed this book, it is probably my least favorite in this series. For some reason, the character of Evelyn was more annoying than she needed to be. In the previous books, Evelyn was such a strong character and this time she seemed sporadic, doubting herself at every turn but then ignoring orders from her bosses. What this book does have going for it is the plot and execution of it. There is a lot going on and the book moves pretty fast. I will continue to read this series. I look forward to what is next for Evelyn, both personally and professionally.
Love this series! Loved the thrilling rollar coaster of a ride the author takes you on from the first page. This book was not my favorite of the series only because there was not alot of profiling but more of Evelyn being locked away in a compound. A great thrilling book and still another great book in the series.
I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Yet again Elizabeth has Evelyn Baine as a strong yet flawed female heroine involved in finding and putting away those who have done her and the country wrong. A suspenseful and intriguing storyline that holds you captivated until you are done reading the book. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
Heiter is back with another book full of twists. I really enjoy the Profiler series, and I think part of my love comes from watching Criminal Minds. I look forward to reading more about Evelyn in future installments!
Another great story in the series. Still not as much development on Evelyn and Kyle's relationship but I did enjoy the investigation side of the story. I hope the author decides to write another book to this series.
This one wasn't as good as the previous two books and I think it had a lot to do with Evelyn's lack of direction with her life. Don't get me wrong, the book was still action packed and kept you interested to find out what Rolfe's final target would be, but the intensity just wasn't there.
I think I got through the section where Evelyn was being held hostage in two sittings and took a full two weeks on the rest of the book.
The lack of intensity could've also been because this was the first book that wasn't about a serial killer. The rush to stop a bomb just didn't seem so urgent to me. And yes, I recognize why that's weird.
Also, for a supposed romance, there wasn't much going on with Kyle. He seemed like an afterthought. I would've liked to read more from his perspective - especially to find out how he felt after losing his spot on HRT. I hope that's something Heiter explores more of in the next book.

I am in love with this series! I am a little behind in reading it, but I wanted to share my thoughts. This is the Evelyn Baine series. Evelyn is a profiler with the FBI, and she is always in the hot seat! When she is approached by a fellow FBI agent to accompany her to a compound that she feels is housing homegrown terrorists, Evelyn's interest is piqued. Now she finds herself in a real "hot seat" as she is taken hostage by this "cult" of survivalists. This is not the usual Evelyn Baine book, but she will use her knowledge as a profiler to hunt down the perpetrators and get to the bottom of this situation. I flew through the pages of this book simply because I could not put it down! It is the usual high octane suspense that is notable in The Profiler series. If you like action and suspense, you will enjoy this book!
Sat on reading shelf for a while...then when I started it, I found that I got into it...and enjoyed the story. I thought the ending was a little 'off the wall' and was overdone somewhat, but still overall I enjoyed the read.
Not really believable small spoiler over a week in a cult compound they would not let her continue working the case. Or dragging her all over the country. I do love Mac.
