When twelve year old Molly Carmichael goes missing on route to her best friends birthday party, DS Lasser fears the worst. When a body is found on a bleak snow covered lane those fears are realised. Someone is hunting young girls, someone who is interested in saving their souls from a harsh world. When another young girl is snatched from the roadside, Lasser knows that if they don't find her and quick then the mad man will claim his second victim. The killer is sick and twisted, yet he's also careful and working to a plan, a plan devised by God.
Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string) He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors. If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you. However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try. 1 The Needle House 2 The Way that it Falls 3 Tethered to the Dead. 4 Twisted Coming soon: 5 More Equal than Others 6 Vanished Beneath 7 Riven 8 Bad Self
I love Lasser. A down to earth bloke with his personal life in a mess and tenacious in his work. A young girl has gone missing and when she is found dead, strange and unusual things start happening to her family and that of the friend she was with when taken. As ever Robin’s descriptions and attention to detail take you right into the heart of the action along with the emotions of those involved. Lasser is very much his own man and whilst he gets on well with his colleagues most of the time, he is a thinker as well as a do-er. Riven is “split or tear apart violently”. This is not the victims, but the families affected. A well chosen, carefully thought out title. This is a brilliant series although they stand well alone other than the Lasser background/personal life which is a continuing thread. Then again- why miss out on the others? Another highly enjoyable read. Thank you Robin!
This is my second DS Lasser experience. I like this character, the interactions with the other characters, and the nice pacing of the story. The story itself is really well crafted, interesting, surprising, and satisfying upon completion. During my first Lasser book, the myriad editing errors detracted from my "total immersion" experience, like speed bumps that are just a little too tall. Also, the wild placing of commas (or lack where I think they would be justified) also took quite a bit away from the experience. But - I enjoyed the story so much I grabbed another in the series. This author knows how to keep readers returning, despite the "speed bumps." In fact, by this time, I actually consider the errors as part of the story. The presentation faintly resembles stream of consciousness story telling, but with a well designed structure that keeps the reader moving forward. Lovely! And yes, I laughed out loud when I came to "profit of doom"...
I absolutely love this series. Can’t get enough. If your reading this and have not started from book one then I highly recommend starting from the beginning. The characters are so vivid and deserve the time and effort of being read. I always feel like I’ve just watched a film after one of these books. I then get excited to pick up the next.
Started binge reading at book 1 and was hooked from the first page.
Each book is a gripping read ,different from the ones before and never fails to enthral. Riven had more than one twist in the tale and kept me hooked until the last word.
Wow what a great read never read a book with soo many different emotions going on great read and quite a emotional sad end the author portrays each character with great detail brill series on to 8 now can't put them down .
Lasser continues to hold my attention, excellent story content and as the cases unfold I’m totally onboard with the next one. Let’s get on with what comes next, thanks to the author.
Good story line as always but I feel drifted away a little during the middle. I don't know why but in all @robinroughley books he seems to have an obsession with the statements "licking lips" in the sentence. Once or twice ok but consistently throughout the book.
Robin Roughley Book 7. RIVEN. The 7th book in this series & like the previous 6 books it is fantastic. It all kicks off when Molly a 12 year old goes missing after heading to her friends birthday party. When a body is found Lasser fears the worst. Lasser is having a difficult time just now with his private life not panning out how he would like it to. This book goes along at a good pace from start to finish. Can they catch this maniac before more bodies turn up ?. Will Lasser sort the problems with himself & Medea out or not. Loved this book as I am sure everyone that reads it will. Very highly recommended. 5* 06 September 2015.
Another brilliant book by robin roughley starts when a 12 year old girl goes missing on way to her best friends birthday party I know it's an emotive storyline but as it's fictional you can settle down and enjoy DS lasser and company at there best like I said the whole book is brilliant but the last few chapters draw you in so you can't put it down till you've finished it don't know how this author does it but at the end of each book you are left hungry for the next
Another really good DS Lasser story, A tense story at times with the usual humour between Lasser and his colleagues. Thestory flows well and I look forward to the next in this series.
