from my ig @aqilahreads

looking back at this pic, i feel like this book belonged exactly where it was - surrounded by good food & good company :'-) 💚🌱

it felt especially apt bc i was having dinner with a dear friend of more than 10 years; someone who has always been a lover of food, but more importantly, someone who has seen me at my worst & stayed. someone who has been there through some of my darkest seasons & continues to show up for me in ways i will always be grateful for.

and perhaps that’s what white: around the table is about, too - how food can become more than just something we share. how it can create a space for conversations, vulnerability, connection & sometimes, the courage to say the things we’ve been carrying quietly.

it’s been 5 years since i first read the first book - white: behind mental health stigma & somehow, it still lingers with me. i remember how seen i felt while reading it, so when xy @thewhitebooksg reached out to me recently, i genuinely thought, “omg !! what did i do for you to remember me ?!” 😭🤧 and i was so touched that xy took the time to make sure this second volume found its way into my hands.

again, it felt like this book arrived at the right time.
reading it really made me reflect a lot of where i am mentally and emotionally today. this wasn’t an easy read for me either, but perhaps that’s what made it necessary.

i love how this volume centres something as familiar as food !!! weaving together recipes, essays & conversations that gently remind us that caring for ourselves and one another can take many forms.

and more than anything, reading it again reminded me of how important it is to keep conversations around mental health alive.

so much can change in five years. we change, our circumstances change, the people around us change. but the need for spaces where we can speak honestly, listen without judgement, share a meal, and remind one another that we are not alone - that remains.

perhaps that’s why this picture feels a little more meaningful to me now.

a table, a meal, a dear friend, and a book about the very things that make us human.

// thank you so much xy @thewhitebooksg, for this ARC. i’m truly grateful !! 🤍
