Vegas Vipers

Her Rival: A Billionaire Hockey Romance

Rate this book
I came to Vegas to write one story.
Not to want the man in it.

I'd just been laid off, and I had one shot left at a career. It had a name. Jett Sturgill. The Vipers' golden boy. The cockiest grin in hockey. The man every magazine wants and not one of them actually knows.

Small problem.
I know him.

Or I knew him, sixteen years ago, in a town we both clawed our way out of, right before I did the single cruelest thing I've ever done to a person and never looked back.

He recognizes me before I finish saying my own name. He should throw me out of his arena. Instead, he gives me the whole show, all that lazy charm, that flirty, infuriating, empty grin he hands every reporter, and practically dares me to find the man underneath it.

Cute.
Digging up what people bury is literally my job.

Turns out, cracking him was never going to be the problem.

The problem is what's under there: the best story of my career, sitting right next to the one man I can't stand to hand over. He's my subject. My deadline. My ticket back to everything I lost.

The worst possible person to want.

And the worst part?

I want him anyway.

On the record, off the record, and pressed against every window in that glass house on the hill.

Savannah Rylan

160 books919 followers
Savannah Rylan writes dirty-talking motorcycle club and mafia romance filled with ruthless men, ride-or-die loyalty, and women who don’t back down.

She has a soft spot for anti-heroes with scars, found family dynamics, and enemies-to-lovers stories that make her heart melt. If there’s a morally gray biker growling “mine,” she’s one happy girl.

When she’s not plotting revenge arcs and steamy showdowns, Savannah is wrangling two tiny humans, two chaotic dogs, and a husband who has fully accepted that fictional bikers pay the bills. She’s known for rocking rainbow hair (usually some shade of pink or purple), surviving East Coast winters with dramatic flair, and drinking coffee like it’s water.

Originally from sunny California, she now lives where it snows, which she deeply resents. But at least it gives her more time to stay inside and write about men who prefer leather cuts over parkas.

If you love possessive heroes, high-stakes drama, and spice that fogs up the windows, you’re in the right place.

this was the hardest to read.
not because the book wasn’t well written, but because of the complexity of the characters story.
Dani Hartley is Brynn’s friend but hasn’t been honest with her over the eight years they’ve been friends.
Part of who she is has been walled off so tightly that she doesnt know how she where to start to chisel through.
Jettson Sturgill had been the encouragement for the team through witty banter for eight years.
He and Rhett have been friends since the minute he was on the Vipers.
But Jett has secrets only Rhett knows.
They have been behind a fortress that took years to build.
Dani’s life is a mess.
Losing her job, place and now running from her father, she took the offer that was made to her years ago from Brynn.
But moving to Vegas wasn’t something she was prepared for either.
And when Victoria Caldwell hires her to write a piece on Jett, she almost said no.
Jettson was told that he was going to be center of a piece to written in a sports magazine.
Upon entering the conference room where the interview is to be held, he’s met with his past.
The one person he never thought he’d see again.
the writer painfully explains the struggles that these two characters have endured.
Painfully, meaning that every harsh word every hit every dark emotion was written to be felt by the reader
Dani and Jettson both struggle with breaking down their walls, to address the past and move froward with either bitterness or forgiveness.
Raw emotions guilt and even ultimate betrayal constructs the path to an eventual relationship both couldnt fight anymore.
But will Jettson finally allow Dani, the one he was falling in love with, to see him?
Or would he continue to hide because anonymity has been his only way of protection against the world?.

Just when I thought the books in this series could not get any better, this one surprised me! At the beginning of the book we meet Dani (Ashley), who is mean (bully) at her school. She ends up asking Jett to the dance, but then stands him up in the most humiliating way possible. This event forever changes him, and his personality. Later on in the book Jett and (now) Dani meet when she is doing an interview on him. He soon discovers that he knows her, even though she introduces herself by a different name. With the task of writing a piece on Jett, Dani soon realizes that she does not want to write what she has been told. With all the past that these two MCs have with each other, Dani has a personal matter come up and realizes she "needs" Jett and she knows that he will be just the one to understand the situation. While this story line does have a lot of personal / family issues that arise during, this is a very realistic story as all families have baggage, in some form or fashion that can affect specific people for the rest of their lives. I absolutely love this MMC, as he is so emotional (even though he does not show it at the beginning of the book), and is very vulnerable (for a slew of reasons). I felt this to be very refreshing, and the same can be said of the FMC. Knowing that fights / issues arise between two people, I loved that both MC's would just go have their own time to digest their feelings, in lieu of just continually getting into huge fights. I am very sad this series is coming to an end, but I love that it ended on this high note.

Savannah Rylan’s Her Rival is a messy past, emotional tension, and just enough angst to keep things interesting.

Dani and Jett’s history is the kind that sticks with you. Nine years ago, she humiliated him in high school—inviting him to homecoming only to ditch him for someone else and make sure he saw it. That moment clearly shaped Jett, turning him into the guy who learned to survive rather than belong. Meanwhile, Dani was the girl who had it all.

Fast forward to the present, and life has flipped things around. Dani loses her job in New York and heads to Las Vegas to regroup with her best friend Brynn. That’s where things get complicated—Brynn’s family owns the hockey team Jett now plays for, and Dani is handed an opportunity to write a major magazine feature… centered on him.

The tension between Dani and Jett is strong right from the start. There’s a lot of unresolved hurt, and you can feel how much that past still lingers for both of them. Jett’s guarded nature makes sense, and Dani’s attempts to move forward add some emotional depth.

That said, the story does drag a bit at times. Some scenes feel stretched out, and the pacing isn’t always consistent, especially in the middle. It doesn’t take away from the overall story, but you do notice it.

Overall, Her Rival is an emotional, slightly angsty romance with a strong backstory and chemistry. If you enjoy romances with a bit of tension and a hockey backdrop, it’s worth the read—even if it slows down in places.

After the previous book, this is not at all how I thought Jett's story was going to go.

At first, I was sympathizing with Dani over her traumatic past—until we got a piece of her and Jett's history. Let's just say I have never instantly disliked a character so much. I also felt completely blindsided by Jett. He always seemed to be this fun-loving jokester, but I quickly realized he was just performing. Between the emotional whiplash and personal growth, I found myself extremely conflicted. Yet through all of this, Jett was the most surprising. He could have destroyed everything, but chose to hold the line instead. As the cracks started forming, I also felt myself forgiving and having hope.

I absolutely loved how this story was written. The calculated, direct, and rhythmic lines made everything land perfectly. I truly felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster with the characters. I already have a soft spot for Rhett and Brynn, but seeing them in the best friend roles made me fall even harder. I love the depth we get with the star player, while also seeing the older ones in a new light. It's bittersweet this is the end. This is by far my favorite hockey series!

This was a super heartfelt story; after reading the previous books, I was not prepared to see the depth of Jett.

Dani and Jett have a painful history that build them into what they are now., She has the girl who had it all and turn into a Mean girl changing Jett completely for the future. But when the story flips and she is the one that loses it all, and needs him to get some of her life back in track.
This is not your regular enemies to lovers story, it goes deeper than that as there is secrets and drama and trauma that they both were unaware of.

Their story is layered with honesty, trust, passion, true recognition of character, adn a feep sense of redemption. HE goes from the jokster to a man who feels deep, who has been hidden under a facade, a fierce protector, who has loved and wants to love. The redemption story of Dani is also not an easy one, she goes from everything to nothing making her actually evaluate her life and realize her mistakes.

passionate hockey romance.

This is Book 3 in the Vegas Vipers series... and it is Jett & Dani's story... Jett plays hockey & is close friends with Rhett (from Book 2, who is with the owner, Brynn's Mom) & Dani is Brynn's best friend - Brynn is from Book 1 (she married the coach). I really enjoyed the series!! I was sad to see the author say this is the end of the series.

Jett & Dani have a history... that Brynn doesn't know about!

The book is fast paced... it's fun to see their story unfold and how it plays out... I enjoy their interactions & how they make things work... I also like Brynn's friendship with both of them & the part she plays in it.

Spice level: 3/5

*hockey romance
*sports romance
*forbidden romance
*she's a journalist
*shared past
*found family
*interconnected standalone
*rivals/enemies to lovers
*secret wealth/billionaire

Thank you to the author (Savannah Rylan) & Booksprout for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Dani has made hurtful mistakes in the past which she has tried to move forward from. Professionally and personally Dani’s life is in chaos, so she reaches out to her best friend and is now working for the team to write a story on Jett, one of the team’s players.

From the outside looking in Jett doesn’t seem to have a care in the world however appearances can be deceiving as he now finds himself having to face the person responsible for a turning point in his life. This time he has the power to affect her career but if she uncovers his secrets she could do the same to him. Let the complications begin!

The past is something that neither Dani nor Jett have been able to overcome and now with the escalating feelings between them they must decide if they are going to let the past define their present and future as well.

Her Rival by Savannah Rylan is the story of Jett and Dani. She did him dirty years ago. It was shameful. Now, she’s lost her job and has an opportunity to complete an exclusive interview with the star player….the same man she humiliated years ago. But, it might never happen. He could expose her and her cruelty.

This story really touched my heart…tore out my soul…and left me devastated and elated in combination. Both of them have pasts…both of them have a lot to lose. Maybe it’s time to revisit the past. Maybe it’s time to let go and rebuild. Jett is an injured soul who is protecting himself. His walls are so high they may never be lowered. Dani just wants to survive. Rebuild. Be more than what she was. Can either of them overcome their pasts??? Excellent read!!

This is a story of two souls who have learned a long time ago to hide who they are.
Dani changed her name and her dreams.
Jett is a famous hockey player who has successfully hidden himself from everyone. He is the loud one on the team but few really know him.
Jett and Dani grew up in the same town. Went to high school together. She played a dirty trick on him in high school.
When they meet again their lives are compartmentalize and why they are coming together, will they really ever show the other thier true self?
The secrets both are keeping could end their relationship. I received this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This one will get into your head as you try to understand the many boxes they have each set up to help them survive.

Jett is the loud one of the team. He heckles, makes you laugh, motivates and pushes buttons. What only his captain knows is the reason why. Being loud built walls of protection around him, protection he learned to need as a kid in a small church town in Tennessee. Dani comes from that same town and has her own box with her own past that forced her to hid inside it. Now for the first time in 8 years she has to face the person she was cruel to in high school that never deserved it. Together they learn that hiding isn’t living. That lesson comes with a lot of emotional moments, dangers of the past, deep introspection and honest conversations that hurt as much as they heal.

This is the third book in this series. Jett is the star hockey player who has trauma from his past and has built high walls to protect himself. Dani is a writer who lost her job and needs to write a great story about Jett. Dani and Jett knew each other as teens and haven’t seen each other for eight years since Dani humiliated Jett. Now is their chance to redo the past and make a future for the two of them. Will Jett and Dani make up? Will Jett be kind to Dani and not reveal their past?

Tortured souls who had a traumatic youth. It's horrible that after years, past horrors are still haunting.
I like the heroine seeing the hero's mask during interviews, looking for something different and worthy to write.
I like how they deal with conflicts like emotionally evolved adults, instructed by the couples' counselor (one of the conflicts I find a little amusing how it's dealt with and fully agree with; about the other, I'm not fully convinced).
Knowing what happened between the protagonists in the past, still I like them together in the present.

In Her Rival, Jett is the alpha, hockey player. Dani is a writer, who came to do Jett's story. Her Rival is a poignant, touching story about two people who had traumatic experiences in their youth. They hadn't seen each other in eight years. They went through so much then, but didn't understand what they felt. This is an emotional story that I felt deeply. It's a wonderful story of personal growth and love. This is a great series, that I loved immensely.

This is the third book in the Vegas Vipers Series but can be read as a stand-alone.  You'll love Dani and Jett's enemy to lovers' romance. They knew each other years ago and then she humiliated him and left.   Both are damaged souls and this book is very emotional.  He's the darling hockey star and she's a reporter trying to salvage her career.  A beautiful love story that will grab your heart.  Enemy to lovers and second chances with an HEA and no cliffhanger.

I've never read a book that was written in this particular style. But I truly enjoyed it. I was definitely entranced. Both Jett and Dani had some serious baggage. Traumas in their pasts closed them off. Neither Jett or Dani could be their true selves around other people. Nor were they personally true to themselves. There's an hea. This is an absolutely amazing book. I hope you don't miss reading it. That would be a shame.

Eight years ago…

Dani and Jett are connected by a backward town in Tennessee and the cruel thing she did to a boy. They are both severely traumatized by their families.

Dani has a bad dad who writes letters.
Jett has a mom and a family and a church with no joy. He’s the loud mouth publicly. Privately, he hides who he really is.

Ah, it’s a good one. Damaged gets a second chance.
Recommend.

The Mouthy Player...
I read the other two books in this series and was curious about Jett. I am glad I read his story... this was my favorite book out of the whole series! It had my attention throughout... Loved seeing a deeper look into who he is and to see how things played out for him. Happy I read this one!.

This is an emotional powerhouse of a sports romance.

It’s got the perfect blend of career-ending stakes, deeply rooted angst, and a hero who is clearly hiding a massive heart behind that cocky grin.

It’s a love story where the past refuses to stay buried and the chemistry is thick enough to cut with a knife, this is a must-read.

Book 3 of Vegas Vipers series, this is about Dani and Jett. I like that Dani sees the real him, while also learning to stop running, that Jett stops hiding after it has become his armor for so long, letting it become Dani’s, and that they overcome a lot from the past.

Jett was the mouthy player for the Vegas Vipers, but it hid a vulnerable side. Dani was Jett’s enemy in a sense, and this made for a good enemies to lovers book. They both are damaged souls and they heal each other in a sense. He is the darling hockey star always running his mouth, and she is the reporter who is trying to salvage her career. Will they both make it out on the other side?

This story brought some tears to my eyes. Dani and Jett felt so real in the way lost souls find each other. Two souls that had been beaten down by the ones that are supposed to love you unconditionally, find love in the hurt and hiding. You will get mad and yet love them both over and over in this story.

The third of the series. I was excited about it, despite the fact that all 3 books had gross errors throughout them- Like things being referenced that didn’t happen for 2-3 chapters. This one was the worst. It was hard to follow. I‘d even call it cryptic. I like the characters- but the story could have been told better and should have been edited by someone.

not my favorite read

The story was great. The story telling , not so much. I thought it was longer than it needed to be. The choppy conversations. The repetition. I like the first two much better.
