Collins Good Grammar

An invaluable guide that breaks down the barriers that prevent so many articulate, intelligent people from communicating effectively. Picking up a book on grammar takes courage, but the learner can take heart from the fact that many of the great writers, including Charlotte Bronte, were hopeless at grammar at school. The guide * the thirteen gremlins of grammar, from apostrophes to verbs * the point of sentence construction * the writing of good English * witty cartoons by Hunt Emerson

I am happy that I have stumbled on this book while browsing the grammar section at a bookstore, recently. Before I got my hands on this book I knew nothing about Graham King. When I leafed through few pages, I liked it instantly. The author used clear and simple language instead of literary jargons that many writers use to demonstrate their command over vocabulary.

The author draws many examples from news (print) articles and well known books by famous authors to explain difficult sections, in a way that the reader can easily understand. At the end of most of the chapters, Graham King has a small test of 5 to 20 questions with answers given at the bottom of the page along with his interpretation of the skill level based on the marks obtained, allowing the readers to test their understanding of the respective chapter before moving to the next one.

After reading this book I bought another one of his good books: Improve Your Writing Skills. I am 60 pages down, and I don't feel like putting it down.

It’s unusual to find a book on grammar that is a pleasure to read. This book is less about the dry, academic classification of words and the mechanics of endless rules and exceptions than describing tools to make the expression of thoughts, both simple and complex, clearer and free of ambiguity. It’s less about writing correctly and more about making sense. This makes it a reference I’ll gladly return to time and again.

A good book on grammar that I see myself going back to over and over. It is a simple book that starts the reader out with a simple test that gives them a boost of confidence and tells them all about where their weaknesses might lie.
