In the seventy year period from the 1880s to the mid 1950s millions of colorful paper labels were used by California citrus growers to identify and advertise the wooden boxes of oranges the shipped throughout the United States. These labels provide a social history, a history of commercial art, and a history of California business. They are of increasing interest to collectors today because of their attractive designs and interesting subject matter.
The text tends to be rather rudimentary in tone. But the labels are often sublime, and indeed offer up but one subgroup of that signally remarkable (though entirely unlikely) treasure-trove of PopCult artifacts: fruit box labels.
