What Remains of Grace
She came home for her sister's funeral and found a failing bakery, a grieving teenager, a family legacy in trouble, and a slow-burn romance she never saw coming.
When construction manager Jenna Hart receives the call that her sister, Grace, has died suddenly from complications of a heart condition, the life Jenna built in Atlanta collapses. Ten years earlier, their brother's death fractured the family, and Jenna fled Florida, leaving Grace to shoulder every responsibility she could not face. Now Grace is gone as well, and returning to Tarpon Springs forces Jenna to confront the consequences of the decade she spent running from her past.
The Blue Cypress Bakery still smells of sugar and coffee, but it is barely staying afloat. The house on Athens Street is sinking into disrepair. Most difficult of all, Grace's daughter Emmie is grieving deeply and unsure whether Jenna has earned the right to remain in her life. Jenna plans to settle the estate quickly and leave, but stepping back into Grace's world places her in the roles she abandoned. Caretaker. Sister. The only adult Emmie can rely on.
With the help of Cole Bennett, the sharp-eyed contractor renovating the bakery, Jenna begins to repair both buildings and the fractured family inside them. Progress stalls when Grace's estranged husband files a partition action that demands the forced sale of the house and the bakery. Losing the property would take Emmie's home, her stability, and the last tangible pieces of Grace. Jenna must fight a legal battle she is emotionally unprepared for, rebuild the life she once ran from, and face the version of herself she tried to bury ten years earlier before grief takes something from her again.
What Remains of Grace blends emotional reinvention, small-town tension, slow-burn romance, and the fierce bonds of inherited and chosen family. At its center, it explores how we rebuild after loss, what we owe the people we love, and the complicated inheritance of grief and guardianship.

5/5 stars! I thoroughly enjoyed What Remains Of Grace and could not put it down. What Remains Of Grace is a beautiful and raw story about grief, family and love. The main character Jenna has just lost her sister and must return home for the first time in 10 years since her brother passed away. Now Jenna must face her past and come to terms with her future. What Remains Of Grace is releasing September 25, 2026. Thank you so much to Jennifer Hartman for the opportunity for myself and my book club to read an advanced copy of this book.
Review of advance copy
When Jenna returns to her hometown after the unexpected death of her sister Grace, she is forced to confront the family and the painful past she left behind ten years earlier. Returning home after ten years means confronting the loss of her sister Grace, the fractured relationship with her family and the guilt she has carried with her since she left. I loved watching her slowly find her place again, particularly through her relationship with her niece Emmie. Their relationship was one of my favourite parts of the story, and I enjoyed seeing them both begin to heal in their own ways.
The renovation of Grace's bakery was also such a lovely part of the story. Jenna is literally rebuilding the spaces her sister left behind while also rebuilding her own life, and I thought this worked beautifully with the themes of the story. Cole was a wonderful addition too. His quiet, steady nature and the slow-burn relationship that develops between him and Jenna added a lovely romantic element without taking away from the family story.
What I particularly loved was the way the story explores the idea that coming home doesn't necessarily mean returning to the person you once were. Jenna's journey wasn’t simply about taking over her sister's responsibilities but about confronting the choices she had to make in caring for her niece and giving herself a fuller future.
An amazing read, made even more so that this appears to be her first novel. I will definitely be adding Jennifer Hardman to my list of authors to follow.

This is a fantastic book.
Grief can be messy… it can be exhausting and confusing and discouraging… but it can also be good. Everyone needs something different in grief.
“If love runs out, just make more.” -Grace
Jenna goes through so much… losing both siblings… and to know the author experienced the same thing is heartbreaking. But in that devastation she has created something truly beautiful.
The Blue Cypress Bakery isn’t just a bakery. Not really. It is a place of memories, of grieving, of healing, and of connecting. A place of mourning but also a place of happiness. What started as a completely heartbreaking first chapter, quickly turned into a story of rebuilding.
Jennifer Hardman made it easy to embed myself in the story and ride the emotional rollercoaster with Jenna and feel everything she did.
I highly recommend this novel.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read their work. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.

Absolutely!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6/5 Stars)
This book exceeded every single expectation I had. It completely broke my heart, slowly mended it back together, and left me feeling so many emotions by the final page.
Jennifer Hardman created a story that felt so real and so full of hope. The Blue Cypress Bakery became more than just a setting. It felt like a place I had actually visited. Now that I’ve finished, I already miss it and wish I could go back.
The characters, the healing, the love, the grief… everything was beautifully written and unforgettable. This is one of those stories that stays with you long after you’ve closed the book.
And can we PLEASE get an Emmie book next?! 🥹 I need more of her story.
Without a doubt, this is a 6 out of 5 star read, and I will be thinking about it for a long, long time. 💙📖✨

It was a good book. I feel like it will resonate most with someone who has experienced grief personally. The journey that Jenna went on finding herself coming back home after losing everyone/thing and navigating so much loss while also helping everyone else was just so inspiring. Some parts of the book made me sit it to the side because quite frankly I just got distracted and it drug a little but it may have just been me and life getting in the way but all-in-all it was a great book.

Thank you to this author and #BookSirens for giving me this ARC. I had a swell time reading this book and I’ll tell you why.
If you’ve ever experienced losing a loved one, especially when it happens without any warning, this book is for you. It reads like a love letter to the grieving, and I’m thankful for its existence.
Here, we meet Jenna whose life has just been upended again by grief, and we all root for her as she makes difficult decisions and tries her best to not get swallowed up because even while she’s grieving, life is happening.
This is a story about grief but it’s also a love story, and that part gives one hope. Don’t worry, there’s a happy ever after. The author treads a fine line between the sad and the deliriously happy in this one. I can’t believe that it’s her debut. I look forward to what she writes next.
So if you love books about feisty teenagers, delicious desserts and even more delicious blue collar men, you should read this book.
P.S: It’s four stars instead of five because it drags a bit at the end, and there’s one bow for me which never quite gets tied as neatly as I wanted it to be.

Where to even begin with the masterpiece that is this book?
What Remains of Grace is a story about grief, loss and love. It tells of Jenna Hart, a woman who recently lost her sister and lost her brother when they were younger, she returns to her hometown for her sister's funeral and decides it's time to stop running from her past and start fighting for what her sister was trying to keep in tact.
Along the way, she connects with her niece, Grace's daughter, Emmie, and the hunky contractor, Cole, who sees too much of her for her comfort.
From start to finish, you are gripped by the beautiful storytelling of Jennifer Hardmann. When Jenna gets the call about Grace, you are right there with her, heart breaking alongside her.
The characters are relatable and real, the dialogue is witty, funny and flows like real conversation. The character arcs are well planned and thought out. And the slow burn is everything you want in a romance!
When Cole flirted with Jenna, I got giggly and butterflies, too! When Emmie cracked a wise remark, I would laugh alongside the characters.
This book also shows a side to grief that not many people portray or even talk about. When people talk about grief, the common phrase of comfort is "time heals all wounds." However, Hardman does an amazing job of showing how untrue that statement is. Grief isn't something that heals, it's something that is ever changing and growing with you and it can look different over time. But as she says in her book;
"Grief was simply the cost of loving deeply."
I am so grateful to have been chosen as an ARC reader, I think everyone should read this book! I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer Hardman was the next bestselling author, in fact, I am praying for it!

From a member of the sibling loss club… this book made me feel so seen.
The raw, honest, and deeply relatable portrayal of grief was so refreshing and unlike anything I’ve read before. Jennifer Hardman captured not only the heartbreak of losing a sibling, but all the little things that come with it—the guilt, the well-intentioned yet agonizing comments people make, and the surreal feeling of receiving the worst news of your life while the rest of the world just… keeps going. When your world has stopped, but everyone else’s continues. It was incredibly validating to see those feelings represented so authentically.
As difficult as some parts were to read because they hit so close to home, they also made me feel understood.
Now let’s talk about the romance. The slow burn was absolutely perfect—respectful, genuine, and beautifully developed. And FINALLY… a blue-collar book boyfriend! 😅 I’ve been missing that, and he completely delivered.
This book exceeded every expectation I had. I haven’t had this hard of a time putting a book down in a long time.
For a debut novel, Jennifer Hardman has done something truly special. The way she transformed her own raw grief into such a beautiful, heartfelt story is incredibly inspiring. What Remains of Grace is a powerful story about living with grief, facing life’s unexpected curveballs with grace, leaning on love and family, and finding the strength to keep moving forward.
And can we talk about Emmie? She may have just become my all-time favorite fictional character. Total badass.
What Remains of Grace is an absolute must-read.

“What remains of Grace is everything that stayed, and everything that changed but stayed anyway.”
“She measured love that way she measured flour—generously, and without keeping count.”
“If love runs out just make more.”
This is truly a book unlike anything I have read before. It’s not the typical genre I go for, but Jennifer, you pulled me in. At first, it was a little slow, but then it hooked me and kept pulling me in until I finished the book.
Jennifer, you pulled on my heartstrings with this one. I got to the end and just started crying, and not in a bad way. You wrote a book about grief, healing, forgiveness, and second chances in the best possible way. This book hit home for me a little because I moved about 400 miles away from home and barely speak to my family.
This book is about Jenna. She has to move back home after her sister passes away, raise her sister’s daughter, Emmie, and help put the bakery and house back together. There is a slow-burn romance throughout the story. Cole Bennett just happens to be the person Jenna needs to lean on, becoming her steady support system. During the process of grief, Jenna and the other characters learn about forgiveness, healing, and finding hope in where life takes them.
I would recommend this book for people to read.

What Remains of Grace completely broke my heart and slowly put it back together.
After losing her sister Grace, Jenna returns home to settle the estate, only to find herself caring for her young niece, trying to save the family bakery, and facing everything she left behind. What follows is a beautiful story about grief, forgiveness, healing, and finding hope when life takes an unexpected turn.
Jennifer Hardman handled the emotions so well. Jenna's grief felt real, and watching her slowly heal and reconnect with the people around her was incredibly moving. Emmie absolutely stole my heart, and Cole was the perfect steady, supportive love interest without taking away from Jenna's journey.
This book made me smile, cry, and left me with so much hope by the end. If you love emotional stories about family, second chances, and healing with a sweet slow-burn romance, I highly recommend this one. It was an easy five-star read for me.

A beautiful story of lose, grief and the recovery from tragedy. I loved the aspect of re-found family and navigating the processes in which every person grieves. Throughout the story this book deals with overcoming grief and moving forward with ones life in the new reality.
Jenna our FMC must return home to help tackle the tremendous loss of her sister as well as renovate the family business, a small bakery. During this journey Jenna learns so much about herself about her grief and about her ability to move forward.
The author did a wonderful job of not only making you fall in love with characters she also was phenomenal at her portrayal of the antagonist in this book, and I will be the first to join the We hate Troy fan club. Witty banter, found family, overcoming grief and a sweet love interest make this book hard to put down.
Thank you to the author for the ARC and go check out What Remains of Grace.

This contemporary romance was exactly the palate cleanser I needed.
What I enjoyed most about this story was how deeply I connected with Jenna and her journey through grief. After leaving her hometown following a life-changing event, she never imagined she would return especially under these circumstances. Watching her navigate loss, confront her past, and slowly begin to heal felt both emotional and authentic.
This is a heartfelt story about second chances, self-discovery, and finding love when you least expect it. Follow Jenna as she learns that healing isn’t a straight path and that sometimes the pieces we think are broken can lead us exactly where we’re meant to be.
If you’re looking for an emotional contemporary romance with themes of grief, healing, hope, and love, this one is worth picking up. 💛📚

This book deserves 6 stars or more! It’s emotional, it’s gut wrenching and also absolutely beautiful!
A lot of things can happen when you decide to fight for what is right even after so many losses. Jenna lost her brother so long ago, and now her sister has suddenly passed away and Jenna goes home to settle her sister Graces’s estate and business and to take care of Graces daughter Emmie.
But things aren’t as cut and dry as Jenna was expecting and when feelings, family, memories and unexpected people get involved, she decides to stay and keep her sisters dreams alive, but trouble soon finds its way into their lives once again and Jenna isn’t so sure, she can pull this off. Karma is a dish best served with sweets and coffee and a town that refuses to let a business that’s been a staple in the community for years, go without a fight!

“If loves runs out, just make more.”
Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me giggle while rubbing my feet together (if you know, you know).
I felt the loss Jenna felt, I felt the anger Emmie had, I felt the love Cole described.
Every emotion felt real reading this book, like I was beside them during this journey. There was so much realness and passion behind Jennifer Hardman when she was creating this wonderfully written art work. I love the way the pages are broken down. How the once sentence remarks hit me.
“She measured love the way she measured flour- generously, and without keeping count.”
What an incredible book. I hope Jennifer keeps going. I will read anything and everything she writes.

This book is a little out of my comfort zone something I typically wouldn’t read. However it was beautifully written. At times Jenna upset me but then I had to remember this woman was literally going through so much after losing her sister. Not to mention her brother years before. And as someone so close to my own sister I couldn’t imagine the grief and loss she felt. I think the author did a great job of showing the loss, the grief she felt especially at the very beginning. The way she didn’t have a strong reaction but when she got to the bakery she started fixing it up the way her sister would have it and I feel like that’s very telling of how strong a person she is. A good read for sure!

What Remains of Grace by Jennifer Hardman is a great book about family, grief, loss, community and a slow burn romance. Jennifer Hardman does a great job of writing about how grief is different for different people and that it can change over time. The book follows the FMC, Jenna who is grieving her sister, Grace, while trying to honor her sisters legacy, support her teen niece all while trying to hold herself together. Hardman is a great story teller and you’ll be sure to love this book if you like the tropes mentioned above. I definitely recommend you add it to your TBR!

Excited to have been an ARC reader for this book! I enjoyed the story and the author was so kind to have sent the book beautifully wrapped with a lovely lemon loaf recipe and a bookmark! I do wish the book focused a bit more on processing grief as it felt a touch rushed into the romance aspect of the story. The scenery descriptions were well done and gave me a great picture of Florida, or what I imagine it to be from this book as I have never been! Being from a coastal area myself, it felt reminiscent of home. I liked the easy speed of this read, and the romance was fun and flirty.
Thank you!

This was a beautiful journey through grief, family, and finding your way back home. It was an honest and emotional depiction of what grief and heartache feel like and how even in our most traumatic moments beauty in the life still around us can be found. This is a book that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it. It shows all sides of what it is to love someone and lose them, but then also to find new love in unexpected places.

AMAZING! If this book doesn't become an international best seller, I will be shocked. It is the ultimate rollercoaster ride. One minute you are so deep in your feels with the FMC, then a sassy teen makes you laugh, and then you'll swoon over the MMC.
I can't wait to see what you write next, Jennifer!

I audibly giggle-snorted and equally sobbed throughout this story that reminded me of the feeling of community, family, and real support built on consistent acts of love. In the same breathe, never have I wanted a villain to get his karma more.

This book was beautiful, endearing, heartbreaking. I cried, I laughed, and there were heavy moments when I had to set the book down and come back to it later. This author found a way to make grief beautiful.

To start with this story I found to be really heavy but once I got into it i started to enjoy it.
A story of resilience and not giving up.

This book has revealed emotions I never realized I had. Grief sure comes in unexpected ways, and for some reason I kind of relate to Jenna since i was in a similar situation. I mean she came back home on the news that her sister had passed away. This happened on a random day and she instantly paused her life because she had heard that her best friend/sister whom she last saw 10 years ago had passed away. This book kinda helped me go through some of my personal issues and grow so with that being said I have to thank you Jenn
I think I'll give it a 5.5⭐️
