Seven months after the events of The Lavender Frequency, the Ministry of Echoes has its first controlled mission — and Daniel is it. The signal log is on a Tuesday evening in July 1980, a NORAD false alarm escalated further than history recorded. A preparation-to-launch order reached British Polaris submarines in the North Atlantic. Thirty-one seconds later, before any authorised officer could act, an abort was transmitted. The boats stood down. The incident was buried as an equipment malfunction.
The Ministry knows otherwise. The signal came from Daniel. He needs to go back and make sure it does.
He arrives in 1980 with a cover name, a stash of cash, and fourteen days before his return window opens in Vauxhall. He has no institutional support, no pre-positioned access, and no authority to do anything he is about to do. What he has is a FOXGLOVE — a GCHQ analyst who has quietly reconstructed the signal log from fragments that were never meant to coexist. She knows the abort architecture. She knows what the record proves.
She is also about to be arrested for treason. The charges are false. The man fabricating them cannot afford the truth she is carrying.
Daniel needs FOXGLOVE alive. The loop needs closing. And somewhere in a 1980 he is navigating without instruments, a senior intelligence officer is moving to ensure that neither of those things happens.
