This's a short book on pleading in prayer God's promises: bringing them before Him. On one level, this's reminding Him to (as David put it) do what He's promised to do. But on another level, God hasn't forgotten; the pleading is to remind yourself of the promises and encourage yourself to trust in God to fulfill them.

Unsurprisingly, I can use this book's reminder to look up from my immediate circumstances to God's faithfulness. He's promised to be faithful; I can depend on him to be faithful in the medium things in my life as well. Yeakley urges his readers to keep a list of a few seemingly-impossible prayer requests they're willing to trust God to fulfill, and he tells stories of people who've gotten them unbelievably fulfilled. I'll do the same, and now I just need to remember to keep praying over that list.

Great Reminders!

I read this book in one sitting. Good reminders regarding the principle of taking God's Word and promises seriously and prayerfully. Truthfully, it was not new material to me but again it was the exact reminders I needed to stir up my faith to pray and believe God's promises. I'm sure this book would be an encouragement to many.

Praying according to the promises

Excellent work! Recovers the lost practice of pleading with God according to his word. Many more prayers would be answered if more people read this book and prayed accordingly.

In Praying Over God’s Promises, Thomas R. Yeakley has written an excellent book about the immeasurable promises found in God’s written Word. He began the book by sharing that there are different types of promises: general, specific, conditional, and unconditional. An example of a general promise would be John 3:16 and God sending His own Son and whoever believes in Him will receive eternal life. Another example would be Ephesians 6:2-3 which tells us the importance of honoring our parents and our reward will be enjoying a long life. He also revealed how he relied on the promises of God when they were expecting their first child. They just graduated from college and they were struggling to save up extra money. They choose to depend on God to assist them in buying the needed items for raising a child. They believed the mighty promise found in Philippians 4:19 which declares that God will supply our every need. God miraculous provided every single item they needed for the new baby during this time.

One of my favorite chapters was called, “Theology of Promises” because this one discussed how God promised to Abraham that He would make him a great nation and He will bless him and curse people who were against him (Genesis 12:2-3). This passage lead Thomas in to asking God to let him meet people in every continent and be able to disciple there. He has already made it to four of the seven continents. It also contained helpful references on where to find in scriptures where God fulfilled his promises to different Bible characters such as: Nehemiah, David, Joshua, Paul, and much more. This is especially helpful in seeing how God came through for His people time and time again and how He is still on the throne and able to be amazing things!

I would recommend this marvelous book to anyone who enjoys learning more about God’s written Word and they are wanting to learn about His promises for their lives. This book taught me that there are many commands, principles, and promises found in the Bible and they can literally change our entire life and assist us in standing strong on His Word when the hurricanes of life try and break us down. I liked how the book included many scriptures verses and a helpful appendix on certain topics listing scripture references. I was also deeply reminded and touched when he discussed how critical patience is and God’s timing is always right and patience gives us time to build our faith while we are waiting for God’s answer. If you’re looking for an impactful book about God’s promises, then check this one out!

Notes: This review applies to the print version. Tyndale House Publishers provided a complimentary copy to facilitate my review.

Imagine possessing an unlimited credit card whose monthly balance is paid by another. Picture someone struggling financially while that card remains forgotten in his wallet. Unfortunately that scenario describes many believers in Jesus Christ who ignore the vast treasury of God’s promises freely given and backed by His character. Thomas R. Yeakley has written Praying over God’s Promises to help believers, new and experienced, renew their prayer life by claiming this staggering array of promises.

Praying over God’s Promises is an easy read giving it appeal to a wide audience from teens to adults. The text can be covered quickly although I found myself pausing often to digest the message. Ample illustrations from the author’s personal experiences as well as the lives of others give the text a real-world flavor.

Yeakley begins with a definition of a promise, and he offers ample biblical support for the book’s content. I found the section on “Promises and Discerning God’s Will” (Page 9) helpful as God’s will is a topic of interest to discerning believers. The author explains how promises fit correctly into the search.

Chapter 4 dissects the examples of several Bible characters that included God’s promises in their prayers. Yeakley follows with a practical guide for his readers (page 50) to adopt that behavior in their own prayers.

Chapter 5 walks the reader through the important duo of faith and patience. “Many times God seems to be slow in answering our prayers.” (Page 63) Yeakley does not duck the tough issue, and he offers encouragement to his readers seeking the why.

Chapter 6 provides a diagnostic guide for troubleshooting prayers that do not seem to be working. Common abuses such as wrong theology, putting God to the test, prayers directed toward fleshly desires, and proof texting are exposed. The necessary course corrections are explained.

As an added bonus to an already great book, the Appendix includes a list of Bible promises organized by topic. Working through this section in a quiet time and/or memorizing the texts would build faith, and encourage a believer to dive deeper into a meaningful relationship with God.

Can your prayer life use some improvements? Praying over God’s Promises may be the very catalyst you need to trigger the changes.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale House in exchange for my honest review.

How should I pray? That is a question that many a Christian has asked and most likely will continue to be one.

In his book Praying Over God's Promises, Thomas R. Yeakley teaches that one way to pray is by praying the promises of God. By taking God at His Word, a Christian can have the wonderful experience of seeing God work.

One thing that I enjoyed about this book is that Yeakley discusses the misuse and abuse of promises for personal gain and for selfish reasons. I do not often find this taught and was grateful that it was discussed.

This little book is a nice addition to my library and should be considered for anyone wanting to study a life of prayer and how to pray.
