This felt like a quiet kind of read. No big hysterical dramatics, more like a marriage falling apart with salt of the earth type characters. There were some definite continuity issues and it could use an edit, but I was still invested.

MMC is on his second marriage with three kids from his previous relationship. FMC is pregnant and overdue. He needs to take the kids back to their mom’s house. He makes seriously awful choices and misses the birth of his daughter by like seven hours. 😬
This mmc is quite beta. Strife originates from his sister, who raised him, and a childhood friend who wants to be the OW. They work together to hurt his marriage. They were probably largely responsible for his first marriage failing as well. How he ever got the balls to marry anyone outside of their approval is a mystery that isn’t addressed.
Of note, this book wins the award of having the best ex-wife representation ever. She was pretty amazing.
I know we all get down to Kiki with our girls, but this book really highlights how insidious it can be when you allow people you love and respect to disrespect your spouse. I’ve been married for 26 years and I’ve absolutely seen this irl and am always cautious about it.
When people you love disrespect your spouse because ’they love you so much and just want what’s best for you’ it can really lead to you reframing events in an unhealthy way. No one knows your relationship like you and your spouse. I’m not talking about helping someone in an abusive situation …. I’m talking about general shit talking. It can really hurt relationships and this MMC is quite lucky he isn’t looking for a third wife.
They eventually work it out and the sister has firm boundaries set if she wants a relationship with her brother.
It was okay, but not something I’ll reread. I’d read more from this author. ✌️

Needs an editor
Pretty good, dragged a bit. I DNF due to the errors in time. First they were married 2 years then it jumped to 6 years, but he has a toddler with his first wife so 6 years would make him having had cheated on his current wife. The bones were there it just failed to get there.

The timelines the issue for me. Plots all over the place. Kids 9, 7 and 4 with previous wife married for 9 years. Divorced at 31. Current wife together for 6 years, it’s mentioned more than once. But ex wife helps the new wife work though some stuff, and she says he can’t lie and he’s not a cheater then how does he have a 4 yo and been with the h for 6 years? I’m a stickler for timelines, and this one is pucked, therefore I’m done another DNF to the pile

- Maren states she has never met Renee, but they speak on video calls like old friends. Maybe that doesn't count as meeting?
- How long have Renee and Owen been divorced and Maren and Owen married? It is stated that Posy is four and that the kids have been part of Maren's life for four years. So Owen and Renee divorced when Posy was an infant?
- It is stated that Margot and Whitney have been working against Maren for six years. Again, Posy is four. Is this to mean that Margot and Whitney were working against Renee (to cause a divorce) and then against Maren?
Otherwise, really great premise.

Well written but he’s so weak!
First, let me say that I’ve seen firsthand a family that can work like this, where the ex and the current can work together and not be hostile. I’ve not seen one where the sibling that raised the younger child managed to completely understand the dynamics that should occur between them. There’s almost always a dynamic that mimics the parental relationship, instead of a true sibling bond that typically doesn’t have that ownership or possessive connection. Maybe psychological connections have changed over the years but I was taught and explored the differences between those relationships, so it was clear that the older sister wanted to run the MMC’s life, not to mention that she actually thought the wannabe was a perfect choice. Wannabe was way too friendly with the sister for that to ever work. They would gang up on him in the present; imagine what that marriage would look like if they were together. He would be miserable.
Anyway this was pretty well done. It’s certainly a realistic take on life and it could happen if the guy was weak, which this MMC definitely was. He finally got his head out but this man was pretty wimpy.

If Maren and Owen have been married for six years when the story starts, but Owen and his ex’s youngest child is four is there something Owen needs to tell Maren? I suck at math and might have missed something. Other than this hiccup, I enjoyed the story. Maren and Owen have an HEA with each other.

Three for the story, the grovel and the writing style.
But it lack consistency in the timeline.
So, the plot is this one.
Divorced hero with three kids is married to heroine who’s having her first child, she is in labor and he has to drive his kids back to his ex wife, seven hours journey. His ex offers to wait for him at a place three hours drive, but his sister, who is possessive and manipulative and wants him to marry one of her friends, persuades him that it’s his duty as a father to drive his children all the way back, which means 14 hours drive.
He drives away, even if the heroine asks him to stay, because he tells her first children takes one day at least.
Of course the kid is born while he’s still going and he misses everything.
Heroine is angry and puts him in the doghouse literally.
His sister tries once again to break them apart.
Eventually he understands his mistake, that is not to listen to his wife first and grovel starts.
So, it would have been a very good story but:
- first chapters. He has three kids, older is 9, then 7 then the youngest is 4. Supposing he’s been divorced when he had his last kid, meaning four years, he and the heroine hasn’t been a couple for more than three, maybe three years and a half at most. He also says he’s divorced at 31, meaning now he can’t be older than 35.
-but then. Chapters on, he’s suddenly 38, and he’s been with the heroine for six years, it’s repeated several times so wtf? Was he having an affair while still married with ow? And he had an affair for two years when he had his third child with his first wife?
- no, this is a mistake, it’s as if the book is split because even in the end it’s said that his youngest kid has learned to put her socks on. So imo it was not reread and correct. But it was very confusing. Hero is 31 divorced with three kids, the younger is four, then he’s 38 and with the heroine for six years. Not at all. No, he never had an affair, the author simply mixed years and timelines.
- ex wife complains that during their marriage his sister tried and succeeded to separate them, but he never realized? Afterward it looks like his sister didn’t like his second wife, the heroine, while defending his first wife, but this could be manipulation from her part.
So, plot and grovel is good, the hero was kind of weak in the first part, then he realized his mistake.
Safe, supposing he didn’t have an affair with the heroine while married to ow, and that the author simply got her dates wrong.

Basic Math????
So I felt completely compelled to right this review simply because if the math in this book. So let's start with some basic information. You have the main FML Maren and then the main MML Owen who are married. It states on one page that Owen & Maren have been married for six years (I believe in chapter 9). Maren is Owens 2nd wife. He was previously married to Renee (for 9 years)... and they have 3 children together... Sadie 9yrs old, Henry 7yrs old and Posy 4 yrs olds. Let that sink in for a moment.
Now if you remember, I previously stated that the two main characters have been married for 6 yrs. If they have been married for 6yrs, how does Owen have a 4yr old with the ex-wife? That would imply he cheated with his ex-wife and got her pregnant with the 4yr old. And even take 7yr old Henry. Skimmed
This book was way too wordy. Repetitive thought life, over and over. I wanted more dialogue. Suspicious of AI. Timeline was off at times. His youngest from the previous marriage was four but the author or AI, kept saying the last 6 years. That would mean he had an affair with his ex while with Maren. These are kinda big details in a story. And weird things, like, he knew about the empty chair before she told him that was a trigger for her. I don't know. This could have been way better, cleaned up, more interaction and dialogue. Not a continuous list of what happened, what he does, what she does. So, I skimmed because I got the jist of it in the beginning of the book.

good storyline but dates were awful
The storyline was a good one and this could have been a great story if there weren’t so many repetitions throughout the book. Also I’m not really sure how you end up with a 4 year old with your ex wife and have been married to your current wife for 6 years when it’s been said he’s not a cheat. Clearly the math isn’t mathing! There were numerous other little faux pas in the story that bothered me but I got past them. For example her water broke in the laundry room while he was standing there with her and later in the story it was said he was on the porch, see little things. Overall it was an ok read, but I would not go back for a second read.

I just finished getting over the stomach ick and had to rush to clean my house up before company showed up. I listened to this on text to speech while cleaning, and I enjoyed it a lot. The Hero is a beta turd, who has let his sister rule him his entire life. The sister busted up his first marriage and just about destroyed this one too. I felt bad that the first wife got a shitty deal. She left him because of the manipulations of his sister, but he finally got his shit together after marrying the new heroine. The sister needed to go to jail. Or be publicly horse whipped. Either or. There's a bit of evil OW drama from the sister's friend too. I enjoyed this one.

But H cuts her off after 9 days or some BS? What?
Grovel and OW drama = who cares when the story line jumps with inconsistent timelines and plot points.

Coming Back from a Horrible Decision
First, I enjoyed the book. The horrible decision hits you in the gut, and the grovel was well done.
Second, the part I just can’t get past. They’ve been together six years. Yet his youngest with his ex wife is four. It’s like the author decided on the three kids ages, and decided on the length of time they had been together but didn’t put it together to make it work. There wasn’t cheating. The overall implication is that the divorce was well before the new relationship. Yet where did the four year old come from?

Not bad just not for me.
This book is trying to hard to be deep and misses the point of actually unfolding a story. This is a book where the author doesn’t shows you what instead she tells you happened… repeatedly. We as the read don’t get to read the conversations they have in realtime. Instead she tells us: they had coffee, they talked, it was nice. He wondered what it meant he went to sleep. That is the set up for the majority of the book. I did not like that at least not for that to be the POV for the majority of the book. If a MC is mad, let the reader see why, it makes us reader more invested in the story.
The whole empty chair reference was over used. I can get the FMC being mad that he missed the birth but to keep harping on this metaphorical chair throughout the whole book irked me.

She wanted him to figure out what he did wrong, make up for it and apologize and not make it about him. He did that but she wasn’t happy. Was a easy book to get into ,not a book about cheating but a book about a man who has let his sister and her best friend blow up his 1st marriage and looks like shes gna do the same with his 2nd wife ,what I liked about this book is the relationship the wife has with her step children and it leads up to a good relationship with his 1st wife ,its refreshing to have a story where theirs no hate or spite which happens with ex partners

I love a good ‘comeback story’ book where one person is betrayed and the the betrayer does the work to make things right…but it drives me NUTS when timelines don’t match up!!! The main couple have been married for 6 years but he has 3 children from a previous marriage with the oldest child at 9 years old and the youngest around 4? Do what?!! Please! I’m begging you!! Simple edits make all the difference!!

The MMC's sister is an emotional vampire! The OW wanna-be is just pathetic. The MMC was groomed from an early age to obey and please his sister above all others...and he did at the expense of his first marriage and the almost destruction of his second. He did finally grow up emotionally and sever the bondage . Well written, kept my interest, wanted to shake the MMC and provide some 2 x 4 justice for the sister.

Good but something’s don’t add up.
Good but confusing.
So they’ve been married for 6 years (pretty sure they dated before getting married) but Posy (the daughter is 4 with his ex wife” and I think Henry (the son) was 7. It just didn’t make sense unless he was cheating.
Then it mention “5 kids worth of noise out of 3 of them and a baby” that’s 4 kids worth of noise.

Was okay, could've been better if the timeline fit
So they've been together for 6 years, but her youngest stepdaughter is only 4? That was just one of many timeline inconsistencies. It could have been better if the timeline was correct. It got the third star because the grovel and growth was legit.

Great story
Owen is purposely ignorant. Maren is strong and is chooses herself and her baby when Owen's careless decisions affect the birth of thr baby. Family drama, OW drama, Betrayal, Angst, gutpunch moments, grovel and redemption. Great short story.

A lot of inconsistency which led to me dnf!! First they are married for 2 years, but 35%ish into the book they’ve been married for 6 years, but he has a 4 year old toddler with his previous wife…. So did he cheat??? Confused!!!

Lots of timeline consistency issues. I would have liked more back story. How they met, why they married. Why he divorced his first wife. Why he lives a state away from his kid. There was some backstory needed to add context and believability to the characters and relationship.

I took one star away because time line of second marriage didn’t line up with the ages of the kids from his first marriage, but overall the story was very good.
