This is one seriously cracking psychological thriller that had me hooked from the very beginning!

Dr Catherine Jenkins, known as Red, is the UK’s best fire investigator. She understands fires like no one else, but Red has a secret of her own… she’s a serial arsonist.

We follow Red as she secretly chooses properties to burn, and one night she decides to set fire to an empty house she’s had her eye on for weeks. Red loves fire. She has no fear of it. The flames excite and hypnotise her, giving her all the thrills she craves.

But things take a very unexpected turn when Red is woken and called out to investigate a house fire, only to discover it’s the very same house she set alight. And there’s something else… a body has been found inside.

Suddenly, this isn’t just arson. It’s murder.

From there, I was completely drawn into the story and desperate to find out what was really going on. Red was such a fascinating character, especially knowing that she’s investigating fires while secretly being the person starting them.

Charlotte Essex’s writing was absolutely cracking. She brought the story to life so well that I honestly felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book. I could picture the fires and the scenes unfolding in my head, and I was so impressed with how vividly everything was written.

This was such an incredible story. Gripping, clever and completely absorbing, with a storyline that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Definitely one that stood out for me and a book I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers with a darker edge.

Thank you NetGalley, Wildfire Publishing, and the author Charlotte Essex for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The perfect edge-of-your-seat thriller.

You are immediately drawn into this story from the very first pages. The pace is relentless throughout, and I found myself constantly looking forward to picking the book back up to discover what would happen next.

The plot is cleverly constructed, following the main character, Red, as she investigates a fire she started herself. Things take a much darker turn when a body is discovered—one that Red knows nothing about.

The twists are expertly woven into the story and, thankfully, are not glaringly obvious. I really enjoyed the suspense and the way the tension builds throughout.

I particularly liked the idea of following a story to discover whether someone will get away with a crime, rather than the more familiar “who did it?” approach. It made for a refreshing and engaging read.

The ending left me feeling as though I was on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I’m hoping this means there is more to come!

I would like to thank NetGalley and Headline for allowing me to read this ARC.

This book is FIRE!! 🔥 What an absolutely cracking debut!

The opening chapters ignite a story that feels genuinely refreshing in the thriller world. A leading fire investigator who is secretly a serial arsonist is already one heck of a premise, but I loved how much more there was to this book than its central mystery. The fire investigation, Red's complicated past and the family dynamics made for such an interesting combination. I've read some absolute banger debuts this year, and here's another one to add to that list!

Something I particularly appreciated was the exploration of sexuality and family relationships. It wasn't overstated, it wasn't there to prove a point and it never felt forced. It was simply part of the characters and their lives, woven so naturally into the story. I noticed it, I appreciated it and I think it contributed enormously to how refreshing this book felt.

I'm now thoroughly annoyed that I've read this before publication because book two isn't available yet, and I already want to know where the next instalment takes us! An absolutely brilliant introduction to a new series.

This book was totally captivating. You don't want the main character to be caught. So many fires. Who is behind them all? So well written. Loved every word. Highly recommended. New author to me but would certainly read other books by Charlotte Essex. I was lucky enough to read an advance copy and leave this review voluntarily.

Red is a fire investigator, an expert in detecting the source of fires. The only problem is that she is also an arsonist. Fuelled by childhood trauma, she sees it as her release. In the past, she corrupted evidence to lay the blame on another arsonist, who was subsequently imprisoned for her crime.
The novel opens with Red being called to another blaze in an abandoned house. She knows all about it, since this was her doing. However, things take a drastic turn when Lina, an astute and sharp detective, is assigned to the case and a body is found amid a second fire upstairs. Can Red escape detection long enough to find the murderer and second arsonist?
As more fires take place, it becomes apparent that they may have been deliberately started to point the finger in her direction. Soon she becomes suspicious of everyone, questioning their motives and movements.
The premise of a fire investigator who happens to be an arsonist is unique and refreshing in itself, and Charlotte Essex's style, in both storytelling and writing, keeps you hooked until the final page. This was an easy and enjoyable read that was hard to put down. As well as the cat-and-mouse whodunit element, there are some genuinely tender moments as Essex explores complex relationships between family and friends. The pacing never lets up, and just when you think you've worked out who's behind it all, another twist pulls the rug out from under you. There is definitely grounds for a sequel — I'd happily follow Red into her next case.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Headline Books for the opportunity to read this ahead of publication.

All She Burns is a gripping, character‑driven thriller with a premise that sparks immediately: a fire investigator who understands flames better than anyone else because she secretly sets them herself. Dr Catherine Jenkins — Red — is one of those unforgettable protagonists who walks the line between control and catastrophe. Brilliant, damaged, and fiercely compartmentalised, she’s built a life on precision and quiet retribution. Fire is her addiction, her release, and her most dangerous secret.

The novel handles Red’s duality beautifully. By day she’s the UK’s best fire investigator, called in to decode deadly blazes with clinical expertise. By night she’s an arsonist shaped by trauma she’s spent years trying to bury. That tension gives the story its pulse, especially when a moment of emotional collapse leads her to burn down a derelict house — and she’s called back the next morning to investigate the scene. Routine work, she tells herself. Except this time there’s a body.

The mystery unfolds with a steady, simmering intensity. Who is the victim? Did Red cause their death? Or is someone out there who knows exactly what she is? DS Lina Karim is a fantastic counterbalance — sharp, determined, and unwilling to be intimidated. Their dynamic adds a clever cat‑and‑mouse layer to the story, one where both women are circling truths neither is ready to confront.

The writing is taut and atmospheric, capturing the visceral allure of fire without romanticising it. Red’s internal struggle — her addiction, her guilt, her need for control — is handled with nuance, making her both deeply flawed and impossible to look away from. As the investigation tightens and the past begins to bleed into the present, the stakes rise in a way that feels both personal and explosive.

Dark, addictive, and full of breath‑stealing twists, All She Burns is a standout series opener. A razor‑sharp thriller perfect for readers who love complex heroines, morally tangled mysteries, and stories where obsession and justice burn dangerously close together.

Red is a fire investigator who actually starts fires. When she is asked to investigate one particular case of arson, she is shocked to find that there was somebody in the house when left it burning. How is she going to explain this away. Usually she is very careful but she is finding her brother's newly arrived twins difficult to process, since once upon a time she was also a twin. Now she is likely to accused of a murder that she wasn't guilty of and she must discover who is out to frame her.
Red is a quirky and complex character. I think in any other story I might find her difficulties annoying but she, and the story were redeemed by the details about fires and fire investigation which I found fascinating.
The story moves along at pace, with several red herrings to keep the reader's interest. I'm interested to see this is the first in a series and would be happy to read more about Red and the fire investigation team.

Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you to NetGalley and Headline for the opportunity to read this advance copy of All She Burns by Chalotte Essex. As I'm not a fan of spoilers, there wont be any in this review.
This book is very cleverly written. It weirdly made me feel like I was rooting for the villain, who then turned out to be not so bad after all. At times it was hard to tell if the character was genuinely bad, or just a victim of past circumstances.
I found this book unusual yet compelling. From start to finish it was full of twists and secrets that sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions with the main character; one minute I was feeling protective and sorry for her and the next I was ready to shout at her.
This is a story where nobody is quite as innocent as they seem, and every secret made me question who I could actually trust.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher my copy of this book.

Red is a fire investigator. She’s great at her job and has a mind great at solving the puzzles. However, she’s also a pyromaniac setting fires when the need overcomes her. When a body is found in one of her fires, she is panicked, is she a murderer.

Initially I didn’t know what to make of this. Such a strange concept to have a fire investigator be starting fires. However the deeper into the book I got my opinion changed and I was desperate to race to the end to see who had it in for Red. The book gives us very small glimpses into Red’s past and her reasons for being an arsonist. The descriptions of fire and how it starts, and spreads were very graphic and had me fully invested. There were constant twists and it was hard to know who to trust in the book (including Red!). With a major cliffhanger at the end I really wish this hadn’t ended yet!

Highly recommend this. Such a different, unique story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This one had me hooked from the first chapter. The idea of a fire investigator who's secretly an arsonist is such a unique premise, and I couldn't stop turning the pages to see how Red was going to keep her secrets from catching up with her.

Red isn't always easy to like, but she's such an interesting, flawed character that I couldn't look away. The tension just kept building, and every time I thought I had things figured out, something else happened. I also really liked the dynamic between Red and DS Lina Karim, and I'm excited to see where that relationship goes.

If you love dark, twisty thrillers with morally grey characters and plenty of suspense, I'd definitely recommend this one. Such a strong debut, and I'll be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series!

3.5 ⭐️
It took me about 30% of the book to warm up to it. It felt a bit like if Dexter Morgan was a female arsonist. Red described all her social issues and how she managed around them. A bit like Dexter.
There was just no code, though.

Usually the books I’ve read revolved around one conflict or mystery that needed to be solved. Here, there was the main conflict but then a few other scattered around that Red tried to solve. It felt like a tv show season with one overarching story and small ones that each episode focused on. I liked that.

Flashbacks did not have the impact I believe they were meant to have. They were frequent but very brief and mostly repetitive. They did not bring new information most of the time. Some were redundant, to be fair.

Petty things that I felt annoyed by:
- Doms twins were born two days prior via c section and they were all already at home? The wife carried her baby down the stairs - after a c-section, the mum should not be carrying anything.
- Red went to Richmond Park and a deer got spooked by her? Deers in Richmond Park don’t give a flying toss about people. If anything, they are extremely aggressive in November, the rutting season.

The final reveal was meh. I had it worked out from the early on. The explanations weren’t strong.
I was unsatisfied with an introduction of a certain character, that turned out to be pointless.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers and the author for an ARC of this book.

All She Burns begins with an intriguing and unique premise, as a fire investigation initially believed to be an accidental death takes a darker turn when a detective declares it murder.

One of the strongest aspects of the book was its structure. The distinction between the present day and memories was always clear, and the memories themselves felt strategically placed, revealing information at the right moments and adding context to the unfolding story rather than interrupting it.

Unfortunately, my biggest issue was the characters. Even by around 25%, I hadn't formed an emotional connection with any of them, and this didn't really change as the story progressed. For a character-driven thriller, this made it difficult for me to feel particularly invested in what happened to them.

There were also elements that began to feel repetitive, particularly the recurring references to characters being unable to sleep. While I understood what this was conveying, after a while it lost some of its impact.

The pacing was another issue for me. By around 80%, I found myself speed-reading because I was still waiting for the story to reach the part that would really pull me in. The ending was fair and brought the story together, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to change my overall feelings about the book.

Overall, All She Burns had an interesting premise and a well-handled timeline, but the lack of emotional connection to the characters and slower pacing meant it didn't quite live up to my expectations. A solid thriller, but unfortunately not one that fully grabbed me.

Dr Catherine Jenkins, known as Red, is a top fire investigator. But she has a secret, she’s also a serial arsonist. She knows how to cover her tracks, and knows fire better than anyone else. After one drunken evening, she burns down an empty derelict house. She is called to investigate that same fire the very next day, and finds out that a body was found at the scene.

I was hooked from the start with this book. The minute I found out that she’s going to be investigating a fire she caused and that there is a murder twist, I knew it was going to get juicy. I found that the tension and suspense built gradually and kept you wanting to read more. It was a typical ‘one more chapter’ vibe. The twists weren’t predictable (for me at least) which was refreshing. I didn’t guess the outcome and loved that it took me by surprise.

Red is an interesting character. She’s got a pretty troubled past and interesting family dynamic, and isn’t the warmest of characters initially. I did grow to like her more and more as the book progressed and we learnt more about her past. I really loved the relationship between Red and Lina!

Overall this was a fun and easy to devour thriller. A big thanks to NetGalley and Headline for giving me the chance to read this early!

First person narrator ‘Red’ is a specialist fire investigator within a private consultancy. Former fire fighter. London based. From the beginning you know she is fascinated with fire.

There’s a lot of baggage making up the backstory for Red’s compulsion to start fires. The author drops little hints throughout the novel of what is in the past to give some kind of rationale behind her behaviour. Looking at other reviews I think If I had read it in one sitting it might have been more of a tense thriller but instead I read over several days. This meant I was less enamoured with the main protagonist as the pace of the story I read at produced a more drawn out self-centered and less likeable character.

The storyline is essentially a ‘will she get away with it?’ Rather than a whodunit which is a different type of premise. Having a main character as a fire investigator by day and an arsonist by night is also an innovative approach. But overall I was not convinced enough to give it a five star review but can’t put my finger on why unless it was my prejudice at an ostensibly unlikeable main character. But an interesting debut novel. Three stars.

Fire investigator by day, serial arsonist by night. When Red burns down an abandoned house, she expects it to be another fire she can walk away from. But when a body is discovered in the ruins and Red is called in to investigate, she finds herself at the centre of a case where someone may know far more about her than they should.

I found All She Burns to be such a refreshing read. I haven’t come across many thrillers centred around arsonists, and that alone helped this one stand out, but it wasn’t the only thing that made this such an enjoyable read.

I loved the characters, particularly Red. She’s such an interesting and complicated protagonist, and I really enjoyed following her throughout the story. I also really appreciated the diversity of the characters, with Red being bisexual, Lina being a lesbian and Red’s roommate being gay. It felt like a refreshing change from the usual thriller cast.

I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I loved the execution. But most of all, I loved the twist. I genuinely did not see it coming, and those are always my favourite kinds of twists.

I really enjoyed the start of All She Burns. It grabbed my attention straight away and had me hooked, but unfortunately the middle dragged a little and I found myself losing some of that initial momentum.

I didn’t guess who the perpetrator was, which I really enjoyed, although I wasn’t a massive fan of the person chosen in the end. The story definitely kept me guessing, though, and I appreciated that.

I loved the subtle romance throughout, but I really wish there had been more of it! I wanted to see the relationship develop a little further. The relationship with her dad, on the other hand, had me so angry at times. And I absolutely loved her brother — he was definitely one of my favourite parts of the book.

The ending also leaves things quite open, which definitely feels like the door has been left open for another book. I’d be interested to see where the story could go from here.

Overall, a solid read with a strong beginning, some great characters and plenty to keep me turning the pages, even if the pacing dipped a little in the middle. 3.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book. Red is such a fascinating and complicated character — a highly respected fire investigator who is also secretly a serial arsonist. I loved the contrast between her professional knowledge of fire and the dark secret she is desperately trying to keep hidden.

The story had plenty of tension from the start, and once the body is discovered, the suspense really builds. I was constantly questioning who could be trusted and wondering how everything was going to unravel. The relationship and tension between Red and DS Lina Karim also added another great layer to the story.

I particularly enjoyed the psychological side of Red’s character and learning more about what drives her obsession with fire. There were plenty of twists and moments that made me want to keep reading to find out what would happen next.

A clever, dark and atmospheric thriller with a really unusual premise. Definitely one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers, crime and complicated characters.

Fascinating idea that the person who is investigating the fire is also the person that set the fire. Even though she knows so much about fire, when Dr Catherine Jenkins lights one in a deserted house while drunk, there are some serious discoveries made that lead to her doubting how much could be due to her own involvement. She grapples with her own worries about being caught, while coming to terms with traumatic events in her own past that have led to her obsession with fire, and fire being her way of dealing with stress etc. The more discrepancies in the investigation become clear, and the more she is developing a relationship with her newborn twin nieces, the more her fears grow that her arsonist leanings will lead to her being sent to prison. There are some great twists and lots of suspense and the plot moves at an appropriate pace. I wonder if there will be a follow up to the book as I would like to read more about she deals with the outcomes in this one.

4* Unlikable protags, but very readable.

She's a firestarter. Twisted firestarter. And a liar. And in need of psychotherapy. And a good(ish) little sister. And a better daughter at the end than I'd ever be to someone like her dad. And someone not likeable.

This is a complex book if you think about Red' issues. Her twin's death. Her part in saud death. Scarlett who lives in her head. Her deliberate distance from her brother that she maybe feels some affection for, if indeed she's capable of any. Her understandable estrangement from her father. Her losses. Her actions. Her dishonesty. Her lack of conscience. Her Teflon coating, it seems. But, it's a twisted book. But it's not a nice book, just one that draws you in. In my case it was because I wanted to see her caught, or if not, learn a lesson and make some changes. I don't think she did, cos she's a firestarter, a twisted firestarter.

I found this to be a solid crime read which kept me guessing and also reawakened a bit of fire safety training in me.

I'm always hesitant to trust the main character in these types of books but I'm pleased to say I liked this very flawed, fire-obsessed MC, and the snippets of her past with her sister were really good for adding depth of character/helping us to understand her and her relationship with her dad.

I had a bit of a wild theory which did not come true (shame 🤪) and I didn't guess the biggest twist, crying out, "who is it?" "WHO IS IT?" as she finally got to see a photo of her true adversary. I couldn't read the words quick enough 😂

I would definitely recommend this book to crime readers looking for something a bit different (unless everyone has been reading about serial arsonists and I missed the trend?) and I am keen to see where this series goes...

Dr Catherine Jenkins, known to her friends and colleagues as Red, is a well-respected fire investigator and secretly a serial arsonist. She is called to the scene of a fire that she set in an empty building which is now the site of a murder investigation as a burnt body has been found upstairs. Red is forced to cover her tracks and as the net appears to close in, she must turn detective to find out what really happened.
I enjoyed this dark psychological thriller with its morally grey, damaged characters and the numerous twists that kept me guessing until the end. Red is a character who bears a huge weight of guilt, making it hard to dislike her or judge some of her choices. The forensic details of how fire can be manipulated were interesting too.

Red is a fire setter; we know that from the first page, but what past trauma has led her to this stage?
Red is also a fire investigator; and most of the time she manages to keep her alternate life hidden.
But this time it’s different. Do the people around her know/suspect something more than they are telling?
Very descriptive; however, I thought that in some cases, this was excessive and unnecessary. Well written and a surprising end but I’m not sure that I actually cared about why Red did what she did and what was going to happen to her. My thanks to NetGalley and the author for an ARC

I really loved this book. Dr Catherine Jenkins, known as Red is a leading fire investigator. But one of the reasons she understands fire so well is that she is also an arsonist. This is a compulsion that she usually manages to keep under control, but she has just set a fire in a derelict house in London. She is then called in to investigate and the police have discovered a body in an upstairs room. Red is now terrified that she has caused a death. I loved the characters and relationships in the story. It is fast paced and twisty and will keep you guessing right to the end.

What an incredible debut novel!

Dr Charlotte Jenkins (Red) is renowned fire investigator, but alter-ego Scarlett sees her setting fires by night. Personal and professional life become tangled when Red is called the examine the scene of a fire she had lit earlier in the night. The haunting truth behind Red’s pyromania unfolds throughout the chapters before the tragic truth is revealed.

The technicalities of fires and arson have clearly been researched meticulously but read seamlessly as part of the plot. I like that the ending potentially leaves the door open for a sequel…

Huge thank you for the ARC.

This was a scorcher - no pun intended!

Was given early copy to review via NetGalley.

If you like police procedural stories or those about crooked authorities, Catherine Jenkin's story will likely appeal - albeit in the setting of fire investigation.

The main character is complex and deeply flawed, and while I was at first sceptical of the premise, the characters and plot become quickly engaging.

Author Charlotte Essex is a producer for shows like Killing Eve, and her wry and witty style is evident in the writing too.

I don't want to give too much away, but this is enjoyable and unique as far as psychological thrillers go - especially if you like them with a fast-paced edge.

I absolutely flew through this!

All She Burns had me hooked from the start. I loved the characters, the storyline and, most of all, Red. She’s such a brilliant main character and definitely someone I’d love to read more about. I really hope this isn’t the last we see of her!

There are plenty of twists throughout to keep the story moving and I found myself constantly wanting to read just one more chapter. It’s fast-paced, gripping and incredibly easy to get completely caught up in. The ending was fantastic.

A thoroughly addictive read and an easy 5 stars from me.

Many thanks to netgalley, the author and the publisher for approving my request to read this book.

In this book we meet Red who is at the top of her game as a fire investigator. Unfortunately she is also an pyromaniac who can't help but satisfy her needs. When someone dies as a result of a fire she started she immediately feels terrible guilt as it was never intention to harm others but she's also desperate not to be caught...

I thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller and found myself invested in Reds character and her back story really intrigued me, I love knowing what makes characters like her tick!

I'd recommend this book to others.

Wow!
When I started reading this I felt very negative towards both the MC and the theme. I have always had a horror of fire and, to me, the idea of someone deliberately setting a fire - particularly when they are reckless as to endangering lives (human or animal) is one of the worst scenarios possible.
However - my feelings towards 'Red' changed about halfway through the story and the book quickly became 'unputdownable' and I finished reading in record time
If you can 'rise above' the subject matter this is a remarkably good story with a well-painted main character, plenty of red-herrings and a conclusion that seems to leave the door open for further developments

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book about a fire investigator who is also an arsonist! Such a unique premise and setting, and I thought this was a really enjoyable thriller.

There was a great twist that I really enjoyed, and overall I thought it was really well written and kept me interested. I did feel that some of the parts involving her sister and her family could have been told a little better, but that didn’t take away too much from the overall story.

A really strong debut and one I’m sure will be well received. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Charlotte Essex and seeing what she writes next!

This is a really great story which has been written from an amazing perspective and it sure kept me turning the pages.

The story is based around Red and arsonist who is a fire investigator and you understand as you read just why she does what she does due to her twin and when she was 8.

I loved all the characters and the do we don't we with Lina and the ending was superb.
