From the USA TODAY bestselling author of One Week Later comes a poignant story about forgiveness, parenthood, grief, and the fragile hope of beginning again.
They thought their story was over. Life had other plans.
When Taylor Roberts learns that Matt Thompson has suffered a stroke at just 31 years old, the news shatters her. Life has already taught Taylor how quickly everything can change – and how easily the people we love can be taken from us.
She hasn’t spoken to Matt in seven years, not since the heartbreak that destroyed them both. But when Taylor stumbles across a GoFundMe posted by Matt’s girlfriend – who has since abandoned him and their young daughter to chase an acting career – she does the one thing she swore she never would:
She goes back.
Now Matt is struggling to rebuild a life he barely recognizes, raising a daughter alone while grappling with the fallout of his illness. And Taylor’s sudden return forces them both to confront the love they never truly left behind.
Told in alternating timelines, the friendship of Taylor and Matt’s early youth blooms into an achingly beautiful first love that spans their childhood years at summer camp. After tragedy separates them, they reunite in their twenties as adults both struggling to find their way. But the universe won’t let them off that easy, dealing them a second blow that will be even harder to come back from.

For fans of: Second chance romance Summer camp nostalgia Childhood sweethearts Single dad MMC Hurt/Comfort Healing journey Dual timelines It’s always been you Emotional slow burn
I went to bed at 2:00 a.m. because I simply could not put this book down. I needed to know what happened between Taylor and Matt, and every time I told myself “just one more chapter,” something else happened that kept me turning the pages.
This story follows Taylor as she returns to Sound Hollow, a place filled with memories, heartbreak, and the boy she never truly forgot. Through dual timelines, we get to see both the summer that changed everything and the consequences that linger decades later.
My poor heart could not handle one more obstacle between these two. Every time it seemed like they were finally getting somewhere, life had other plans. I was completely invested in their journey and rooting for them from beginning to end.
What I loved most was how emotional and nostalgic this story felt. It captures that bittersweet feeling of looking back on first love, missed opportunities, and wondering what might have been. The dual timeline was executed beautifully and kept me fully engaged as the pieces slowly came together.
For anyone who has ever dreamed of going to sleepaway camp, this ones for you! Talk about a nostalgic read. This story effortlessly takes you from past to present, and back again, telling the story of Matt and Taylor, two people trying to find both themselves and each other.
What really stood out to me was K.J. Micciche's ability to bring the story to life. Especially during the chapters set in the past. From the cabins and campfires, to the friendships and activities, I felt completely immersed in the story, as if I was there with the campers. The setting was so vividly written, it sort of became a character in its own right.
The love story was epic. I could feel the longing between these two grow through the years, and I found myself completely wrapped up in their journey. These are the kind of characters that will have you rooting for them from begining to end.
This is the kind of book you will want to savor, the kind you never want to end. I was hooked from the very beginning, and found it impossible to put down. Even when I wasnt reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and wondering what would happen next.
I really cant say enough good things about this heartfelt and beautifully written story. If I were you I would grab this book, your favorite drink, and a cozy spot in the sun. This is one summer read you wont want to miss!
Thank you K.J. Micciche for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you ever need proof that childhood friends to lovers is one of the most emotionally devastating tropes to exist… Then Came the Fall is right there waiting to ruin your life.
This book put my heart in a blender and then had the audacity to slowly piece it back together.
Taylor and Matt meet at summer camp when they’re 6 years old, and we get to follow them through every stage of their lives. Their friendship, first love, heartbreak, mistakes, and eventually their journey back to themselves (and maybe each other) had me hooked. Watching them grow from kids to teenagers to adults made every moment hit so much harder because you feel like you’ve grown up right alongside them.
One thing this book encapsulated so well was first love. When you’re young, you truly believe love can survive anything… until life happens and you realize sometimes love isn’t enough. Seeing Taylor and Matt go from best friends to lovers to strangers hurt my heart.I felt every bit of their happiness, heartbreak, betrayal, hope, and healing. If a book can make me physically stop reading just to stare at the wall and process my feelings, it’s doing something right.
I also really appreciated how the story handled both Taylor’s and Matt’s mental health. They’ve each experienced significant trauma, and I loved that their healing journeys looked completely different. There wasn’t some magical fix or perfect answer… it felt honest, messy, and realistic.
Also… I stayed up until 3AM because I wasn’t going to sleep without knowing how this ended. Zero regrets. My sleep schedule may never recover, but my heart eventually did.
If you love childhood friends to lovers, second-chance romance, stories that span years, and books that emotionally body slam you before lovingly putting you back together, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Just maybe don’t start it at bedtime unless you’re okay functioning on three hours of sleep. 🙃
Thank you KJ and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of Then Came The Fall (publishing July 28, 2026).
It was so hard to watch Taylor grow up feeling so neglected and alone, but seeing Matt become the person who took away some of that loneliness made their relationship so special. Getting to watch them grow up together over the years and seeing their friendship naturally turn into something more was one of my favorite parts of the book. It never felt rushed, and it made me root for them from the very beginning.
I'll admit, there were quite a few times I wanted to shake Taylor for pushing Matt away although I could understood why she did.
There were also moments where I was genuinely on the edge of my seat worrying about Matt's health and what it meant for their future. I honestly didn't know how everything was going to work out, and I was completely invested until the very last page.
One thing I wasn't expecting to love as much as I did was Brett and Taylor's relationship. Watching that bond grow over the years was so heartwarming, and it added another layer to an already emotional story.
This book is so much more than a romance. It's about found family, forgiveness, second chances, and finding your way home. Sound Hollow became just as memorable as the characters themselves, and by the end I wasn't ready to say goodbye. This is one that's going to stick with me for a long time.
I absolutely adored this book! Maybe I'm a little biased because I'm a sucker for a second chance romance and I'm from the middle of Long Island where much of the book is set.... but this story is just so adorable. I love how the "Present" is consistent, but the past moves forward, so you're seeing where things started and getting little pieces of how they got to today as you go and it all comes together in the end.
I really enjoyed the way the parts of Taylor's life were so different--- crap home life in the city, idyllic summers at a tight knit summer camp--- and how the author did a great job of showing the reader the two different worlds and building a good cast of characters in both. All of the characters seemed real and the relationship between Matt & Taylor seemed believably screwed by timing, their reactions were always reasonable given the situation.
The only thing I didn't love was that the past chapters were labeled '19 years ago', '17 years ago' ect. and I wish they would have been labeled simply with the year, because it was often distracting to be trying to figure out what year they were in or how old they were, whether or not the details make sense. The book was so good it didn't really matter though.
If you're looking for a romance that will quietly break your heart before putting it back together, Then Came the Fall needs to be on your TBR.
This is a childhood friends-to-lovers, second-chance romance that follows Taylor and Matt from the day they meet at summer camp all the way into adulthood. Because you watch them grow up together, every milestone, every heartbreak, and every reunion feels incredibly personal.
What really stood out to me was how authentic their journey felt. This isn't a story where love magically fixes everything. Both characters carry deep emotional wounds, and their healing is messy, complicated, and beautifully realistic. The dual timeline keeps revealing new pieces of their history, making it impossible to stop turning the pages.
Beyond the romance, this is a story about found family, forgiveness, resilience, and discovering that sometimes home isn't a place—it's the people who never truly leave your heart. If you love emotional romances with unforgettable characters and a love story that spans years, this one absolutely delivers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Cabaret Books for the eARC! Pub. date: July 28th 2026 #ThenCametheFall #NetGalley
Taylor and Matt...starting off as friends bound by summer camp. Quickly evolving into best friends and then eventually falling in love even though they came from entirely different backgrounds. Matt grew up in a loving family and never wanted for anything. Taylor's life was much harder, a childhood marked by domestic strife and constant worries about money. When her mom dies and her dad ends up in prison, she has no other choice but to move in with her aunt. This takes her out of Matt's life for several years. Eventually they find their way back to each other for one brief summer. And then it's over. Taylor makes the hard decision to leave Matt. It's what's best for both of them. Fast forward to several years later. Matt's sick and Taylor finds herself drawn back into his life. But this time it's not just Matt. There's his young daughter Brett to think about. Taylor tells herself she's there as a friend but can't help falling back into old habits. This was a really good story. The story shifts from past to present as we find out what caused Taylor to leave Matt all those years ago and what finally brought them back together.
The FMC, Taylor, struggles with depression and anxiety rooted in a difficult childhood. Home is tough, and her escape is an agricultural summer camp she attends every year.
At camp, she meets Matt, our MMC. In Taylor’s eyes, he has the perfect family, and the two quickly become best friends at Sound Hollow. Matt cares deeply for her and becomes her emotional anchor during those summers. As they grow into their teen years, their friendship turns into something more.
The story is told across dual timelines—one at summer camp and one in the present day. In the current timeline, Matt has suffered a stroke at a young age, which brings them back into each other’s lives. What unfolds is a second-chance romance that explores what truly makes a “home.”
The writing and pacing are spot on, with twists that hit at just the right moments. If you’re looking for a summer romance with real emotional depth, I highly recommend this one. I can’t wait to read more from this author. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the eARC!
Experience present-day and the past with Matt and Taylor-childhood friends who met at sleep away camp. See what happens when two people who once loved each other very much reunite under intense circumstances…
I truly enjoyed reading the chapters that were set in the past-so I could understand the foundation their friendship was built on- and see clearly how much are FMC has grown.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I liked Matt- when Taylor returned to him in present day, he was recovering from a medical event. And at first, I was worried he was really bad news for her. Thankfully, as the book went on, I was able to see the real Matt and realize that he still was the kind-hearted kid from their childhood.
I absolutely loved this book, and I was really surprised when I read the end-the author’s notes- this book is a love letter to the author’s own camp experience- how meaningful and special!!!!
This is a story of heartbreak, hope, childhood stories, dreams and unconditional friendship. Point of view is a mix of reliving the past while confronting the present and anticipating the future. This past/present style makes you eager to turn the next page. Matt and Taylor have two very different upbringings yet the place that brings them together is camp. Camp is cake, beaches, first loves, nature and building a new future for generations. As their past and present come closer they realize unspoken truths and that camp may hold a special place in both their hearts. This book felt heavier than a previous KJ Micciche book I've read but is worth a read and pulling those heartstrings reflecting back on days of camp and young love.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity of reading this ARC.
Told in dual timelines, we follow Taylor and Matt from the moment they first meet, through everything that drove them apart, and ultimately to their reunion years later. Their connection runs soul-deep, and if you've ever experienced a relationship like that, you know how rare and unforgettable it is.
I knew there had to be a reason behind Taylor reaching out to Matt in the present day, but I wasn't prepared for the reveal. It absolutely wrecked me.
With summer magic, found family, and a beautiful second-chance romance, this story is equal parts nostalgic, hopeful, and emotional. If you're looking for a love story that will make your heart ache before putting it back together, I'd definitely recommend this one.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
This story was about the right person, wrong time. Matt and Taylor have been friends since childhood. They meet in summer camp and eventually grow into something more. However, life wasn't always easy for Taylor like it was for Matt. Micciche does a great job with the pacing of the story with the dual timelines. It helped build the tension and heartache as we see these two navigate from childhood to adulthood and what life throws at them. This story will have you in your feelings. I really liked the FMC Taylor because she’s strong and resilient, but also vulnerable. I loved her journey of perseverance and forgiveness. Overall, I’d recommend this book to readers who love a summer love, second chance romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
As soon as I was finished I DM'ed K.J. and told her this was one of the most beautifully written books I've read. Wow, I loved it so much.
It was truly unputdownable for me.
This is a second (maybe third?) chance romance. Where you flip between past and present. Matt and Taylor meet at a summer camp as kids and you follow their story and try to put the pieces back together along side of them.
This book made me envious I never went to sleep away summer camp and made me long for the innocence of summer before life took over.
The reality of the characters, the development, the love, all of it - I am so blown away.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I feel like this store captured the feelings of change, starting over and finding love when you least expect it perfectly.
I loved watching the relationships between the characters develop. It just felt so real and relatable. Not only was I rooting for Matt and Taylor throughout the entire book but also for Taylor and her father.
This book was full of heartfelt and emotional moments that kept me reading and engaged right from the very beginning. It’s the perfect example that life may not always lead us down a path of sunshine and rainbows, but it will always lead us to exactly where we are supposed to be.
If you are looking for a summer read about friends to lovers and second chances, then this is the book for you!
Then Came The Fall by KJ Micciche is everything you'd want in a friends to lovers and second chance romance. Youll want to read immediately. It's such an intimate and personal story of Taylor and Matt and how their lives unfold and intertwine. Taylor's life at both home and camp shape her entire being.
Life unfolds in a way that separates her from Matt. But after 7 long years apart, but they come together again after Matt suffers a stroke. This life altering event changes everything.
I couldn't put this book down and was eager to find out the entire time how it would pan out! It's due to be released the end of this month so add it to your TBR immediately!
I LOVED this book. I went to the camp that the author went to and used as her model for Sound Hollow. It brought back so many vivid memories of what it was like to be a camper, then a counselor, and even the assistant director myself. Taylor and Matt's love story was icing on the cake of a story about a place that means so much to so many. If you ever went to sleepaway camp this book will bring you right back to the excitement of co-ed dances, cool nights after hot days, singing at the top of your lungs, hanging out on the beach and even the raids!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A tribute to summer camps and its positive impact on young people, “Then Came the Fall”, by KJ Micciche, is also a story about friendship, love and second chances. The unforgettable experiences lived in Sound Hollow and the unique people there shape Taylor’s personality and life irrevocably. Throughout the story the heroine struggles with changes, loss, mental health issues, and it seems that Sound Hollow is home and where she finds peace. The romance between Taylor and Matt is sweet, and their love enduring; Brett is a darling child.
This book is about two kids who fall in love during a sleep away camp and always find their way back to each other even after many set backs. I love that the book is set into different timelines and shows how the characters grew up. I also loved that it mentioned difficult topics without it being too much. This book had it all, romance, tragedy, and some drama.
Do you like second chance romance? Then you’re going to love this one. I even got to experience some nostalgia. Summer camp, friendships that last throughout the years…ahhh, it’s so good. It made me miss camp. The alternating timelines are fun to read and keep the story moving so well. You see the blossoming of Taylor and Matt’s friendship and how it changes throughout their life. You’ll want to root for this couple, even with the obstacles in their way. I had a hard time putting this down, in fact I stayed up to keep reading. I can’t wait to get more reads from KJ in the future! It’s definitely a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.
I was gifted a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you so much to Meet Calli for connecting me with KJ Micciche!
First off, I devoured this book. The setting, the dual timeline, and the authenticity of the characters were everything and more. These characters were messy, in the best way. There were definitely moments where I wanted to lovingly shake some sense into them because they were so wonderfully frustrating. KJ has a way of setting her readers into a scene.
I would recommend this read to my fellow readers, especially if you like SSRI representation! KJ thoughtfully explores both the benefits and the challenges of anxiety medication, which made the story feel even more grounded and authentic.
The only thing I wished for was a little more time with Matt’s heart outcome because that storyline felt slightly unfinished to me. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. KJ did a wonderful job of showing Matt and Taylor’s relationship grow!
