Continue the magic filled, comedy, romance with Cardcaptor Sakura the second three volume set of the best-selling girl's shoujo adventure that spawned the mega-hit Kid's WB anime!
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
This series is so pure it warms my heart. Sakura exudes warmths and it is impossible not to feel it seeping through the pages.
While the plot on this one was a bit choppy, I really loved how character relationships are progressing and evolving. The art was very beautiful and moving, as usual. The Wood and Dark cards are drool worthy.
"I don't want to be your master. I want to be your friend."
Some parts were hilarious and literally had me laughing and other parts were so heartfelt and emotional that I could feel my heart breaking and tears close by.
I still love these characters and the interactions and I love seeing more in depth stuff as this series continues. I grew to really like Kaho Mizuki. I'm not sure how I feel about I love and admire Sakura's strength shown through her love and heart. And the quote I put at the top of my review is my absolute favourite.
World: The art is beautiful and full of characters, classic Clamp. The world building is solid, it's not overly deep and complex and just shows enough for the story to take place. That being said it is still fun.
Story: I watch the show first so ready this again also reminded me how it was a but choppy and rushed in story and character moments. Where the show was draggy and filled with filler this book does not stop. It's still very fun and beautiful but the quiet moments from the show are not as in depth here. It's a fast brisk read.
Characters: Some big development for Sakura and how it has changed her status quo. Also wit Toyota, Yukito and new Mizuki all good little chunks of character development for the story. Would have liked a bit more depth but I'm not the target audience and age group. For what it is it's solid.
A good second chapter that changes things which I like.
Cardcaptor Sakura book2 remains as good as the book1. It has the some positives and negatives. I have enjoyed reading the manga but my library doesn’t have book3 & 4 so perhaps I will shift to the anime adaption. Also I’ve heard it has the uncomfortable teacher/elementary school student situation toned down which is a big selling point.
It really is fun to be tagging along on Sakura’s adventures again! I especially like that we get more magical lore, and it’s always a treat to see the characters flourish and their relationships deepen or change. There’s still touches of humor and heart sprinkled all throughout; what a magical journey!
There was not as much Sayoran development as I assumed would be in this sequel. This one actually felt like a transition book, from card collecting to something grander.
Yet it failed to up the stakes enough, in my opinion. Most characters around the protagonist were not developed in any seeming way and there weren't as many standout moments as I hoped.
It was a good book, despite the distracting questionable moments around the teacher (Terada) and his student...
MY HEART RATE IS UP THERE THIS BOOK IS THE BEST I SPENT MY SUNDAY READING THIS WHILE ALL OF YOU ARE READING CURSED CHILD I CAN ASSURE YOU SAKURA IS A MILLION TIMES COOLER
I really liked this "volume" more than the first. Less hand-holdy (as in, not as much 'SIGN POINTING AT CHARACTER INDICATING THAT'S WHO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT'), more background on characters, less of the creepy student-teacher relationship business (or more like barely any mention of it), some good character development.
I understand why this series has become such a beloved classic, apart from the weird stuff and the childishness. It's still a great series for practically any age.
One huge plus for me is that it's not as cluttered as a lot of newer shoujo is. There are backgrounds and things to look at other than characters, but it's not tons of sparkles and ribbons and stuff in the backgrounds that detract from the focal point of each image. It's still "girly" and sometimes there are flowers and stuff, but nothing extreme (looking at you Tanemura Arina--gorgeous art, but sometimes exhausting).
It's getting pretty damn good! I'm excited to continue.. unfortunately it's (volume 3) already loaned out at the library so I'll have to wait until after my Japan trip to read on!
At the end of the last Omnibus Sakura, Syaoran, and Tomoyo found themselves suddenly stuck inside the immensely confusing and challenging Maze card. Using methods available to them it seems impossible to overcome the challenge when suddenly an ally arrives to find them who is tied to Sakura's fate and shows them the most direct route to the exit so the card can be caught (it is a smashing success.) We also get some flashbacks of Toyo and Kaho's past, a school field trip to the beach, a festival at the shrine Kaho works at, as well as a few more cards captured and that is all what was originally just volume 4 of the original manga. :)
There are other interesting events in this book which I will leave to you fine readers to discover and enjoy for yourselves but one of the most important events of the series comes up before the end of original volume 6 when Sakura captures the last of the cards and has to face judgment from the Guardian Yue who appears and the truth is exposed before it sounds like Sakura must face new dangers in the second half of the series with her new magical key/staff.
These Books have a lot of cute and funny parts so choosing favorites are not easy but some come to mind more clearly like the shortcut out of the maze in the beginning, the revealing of the Light card (though I am not sure of the purpose of the glow card if you have a light card), and the big reveal at the end surprising even Yue as Sakura takes her destiny in hand. I hope you all find your own memorable moments that you can enjoy. :)
They are really doubling down on that inappropriate student/teacher relationship stuff. They're not at all necessary to move the plot forward either so it's definitely something they just wanted to include. This is more a book about relationships than magic. That's good and bad, the characters are all entertaining, but the agenda of the relationships could be off-putting. Are they really hoping to encourage 10 year olds to date their teachers though?
I think they missed the chance to stretch this story for years. How many cards did she even catch, 20? At least catch an entire tarot card deck worth since you can apparently use them for readings. Really they're just missing out on a lot of story potential! There are so many different types of cards they could've added, even just based on Chinese magic let alone English. These omnibus volumes are made up of three volumes each and the original volumes seem to not have a ton of issues in them so I'm guessing this is a monthly series rather than a weekly one so the crazy stretching of the story maybe isn't part of the usual game plan.
It's an enjoyable read anyway and it had me laughing out loud at times. The nostalgia is higher for me, but it's also making me remember how boring the show could be at times. I think the anime maybe did stretch things out more with more cards (or it at least felt like it moved slower) so maybe it's not a bad thing that they stopped sooner rather than later.
I don't think the individual stories in this volume are quite as strong as in volume 1, but there are some standouts again like Light and Dark - I love their character design and alsmost wish they had more page time.
Yue is introduced in this volume after some very mild foreshadowing in volume 1, and some more hints early in this one. Yue is one of my favourite anime/manga characters so I was a little disapointed by the limited page time he gets here. I also think the anime version beefs him up more into a more villainy character - but I haven't watched the anime for probably close to 15 years now so I could be very wrong.
The main thought I had whilst reading this volume though, was how similar the play Sleeping Beauty was to Sorta Cinderella from Furuba. I don't recall Sailor Moon or Ouran having a play in it, but I swear Guilt-Na Zan did so it must have been a bit of a trope at one point!
Other thoughts... whilst only hinted at I like that there are a few potential same-sex pairings. Granted most of the characters are TEN, but I think early representation is important. I do think at least one of them is a bit... queery-batey? but I could be remembering things wrong.
I'm not in a desperate need to read on in this series, so I think I might read omnibuses 3 and 4 next weekend...
this volume forms the second half of the card captor arc of cardcaptor sakura. this volume had a lot of card catching fun as well as some fun reveals about major characters. even though i have read this volume befor a few years back i didn't remember a majority of the twists which made them even more fun to read. the art style is interesting, even though this series has been around for a while the art style is pretty good and has aged well. this can be best seen with the clow cards and the action scenes which look awesome and have real character about them. this was definitely a good wrap up for the first arc since it neatly wrapped up plot lines in a way that forms an almost ending but leaves a few interesting plot threads to be picked up in the second half of the series for the second arc. looking forward to reading the next arc and seeing where the story line goes as well as how this lovely series ends.
Sakura is such an adorable and wholesome protagonist. I already liked her in the first volume and now I like her and this even more! It's amazing and even motivational that literally her strongest ability is knowing she will be fine.
The relationships and crushes in this series are pretty weird, I won't lie. At least Syaoran and Sakura both having a crush on Yukito has a good explanation, it's pretty cute :D But the MULTIPLE student-teacher relationships are concerning...
The chapter with Sakura's great-grandfather was very sweet. I just wish Sakura knew that she was related to him!
The last chapters were fantastic.

Such a well written and drawn manga! "Cardcaptor Sakura" is probably the most interesting masterpieces of CLAMP group and it'll never get dull nor outdated because it is so detailed, so beautifully created that I believe it will capture readers' attention long after everything else will get boring. CLAMP created a world full of magic and beauty and I must say, even if the mian character is around 13 years old, it still connects with me, somehow. Sakura is such a loveable character, even if sometimes weak, she still manages to capture our hearts. The whole idea is such a pure concept and this manga provides such a nice break from our current reality, full of anger and ugliness. It is a world that I'm diving in and I reluctantly coming back from. If someone doesn't know where to start with CLAMP, I'm definitely recommending to start their adventure with lovely Sakura.
An enjoyable continuation of the series, but again ruined by reference to a creepy and deeply troubling relationship between a 10 year old girl and her school teacher. I HATE that this is part of the story (even the very minor part that it is) because it really ruins something, that is otherwise a fun and happy manga. It's probably worse that it treats it like no big deal and makes one random reference to it across the whole 500 pages- WHY INCLUDE IT? IT'S SO UNNECESSARY!!!
I also found the end part of the manga (where Sakura gets the last 2 cards and is judged) moved quite quickly and Kaho Mizuki quite a pointless character (there simply as a diversion).
Ultimately, not as enjoyable as the first omnibus, but I do still want to read on.
While the beginning felt a bit like filler, I ended up really loving the last volume of this collection. It wraps up this arc which has me very excited for the next. Some of the filler was cute, don't get me wrong, but I did have brief Kill Bill sirens before I connected the dots that the old man Sakura was meeting was her great-grandfather. Weird that nobody told her; don't encourage your child to befriend strange old men! But it was still sweet, the weirdness aside. But anyways the ending. I'm so happy to finally meet Yue, as I've heard a good deal about him. Can't wait to get to know him better. Love Kero's final form. And it was cool getting to see Clow briefly. Can't wait to see where this is going.
Soooo good getting back into this series! I need books 2 and 3 NOW! Haha. Very easy and fun to fly through and it is pretty addictive so get ready to want to binge these books. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the story is exciting and, I have to say, there are so so many cute little side stories. One thing I love about Cardcaptors as well is that in these books the characters are constant and each have their own purpose- I enjoy seeing them all grow and pop up all the time instead of random characters making appearances here and there. The continuity makes me very happy :) definitely recommend, especially if you love cute magical girl manga!
