During the eternal quest for pleasure, Ryan finds himself digging up the corpse of another teenager, Jeffrey Neil. He soon befriends the carcass, and through the online journal Jeffrey left behind, Ryan is mentored toward a new perspective on life.
But has his unnatural friendship cursed him? Will he be strong enough to escape the black hole that is his hometown? And who is this tattooed freak that hunts him like some bloodthirsty ghoul? Ryan better be careful; there are cops everywhere...
Inside an empire of mediocrity, the spirit of rebellion is reborn.
Dax Ryan Garner was born in Phoenix, Arizona and educated in the Catholic school system. He earned a Bachelor of the Arts from Arizona State University and studied for a Master of Public Health Degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Garner is the oldest of five creative and successful siblings. He and his wife develop creative projects together and work in the health field.
"Corpse of Freedom" was.. different. I'll admit that I was expecting more of a Zombie friend, not just a dead body due to the use of "befriends" on the back cover and I had thought there might be more of a background on Jeffrey yet he remains as much of a mystery at the end of the book as he was in the beginning.
I like dark humor, messed up stories and things of a gothic or disturbing nature and whereas "CoF" covered most of those things, I felt that it lacked a true overall point. Don't get me wrong, it was a crazy ride but more in the vein of those aimless Friday night joyrides with friends that serve no purpose other than to kill boredom as opposed to "I need to get from here to there" drives with a clear destination in mind.
The Garner brothers write well other than a constant repeating of themselves. (Each time the driver of the Buick is mentioned, we are told that he has the appearance of a skeleton with thinning hair...ok, gotcha.) They are dialogue heavy which isn't a bad thing. I felt that the story needed a bit more fleshing out as I don't get what the deal with Jeffrey. Why keep him? Why the attachment? Was there a curse? And did Ryan really learn anything from the online journal? And I never got the point of Fancy the cabbie.
I didn't really get the group of friends as they didn't seem to like each other at all. But then again, Ryan was pretty much an nonredeemable asshole that I didn't like either.
I don't wanna make symbolism out of nothing if the guys didn't write it that way, but it seemed like there were sly nods at consumerism and big businesses taking over and the lack of people being able to think for themselves. I get that boredom breeds chaos but you don't have to be a dick to be a rebel.
I may not have loved this book but it was weird and wacky enough that it will stick with me for sometime as I will continue to turn it over in my mind, regardless of the fact that I have since closed the book for the last time.
I love forward to seeing what else Dax and/or Lloyd come up with next because whatever it is... it's going to be nuts.
Corpse of Freedom was a very unpredictable book. It was a bit weird.. Decided my choices of friends aren’t nearly as weird as these characters chose. It was actually a neat way to get away from the other books that tend to follow the same guidelines. Not sure it’s for all teens; actually I am sure it isn’t… Hoping none of mine try the same ideas but…. It was a good creepy; strange you’re not going to believe this… Really liked the ending as… it wasn’t what I expected…
This book was a strange read from start to finish. I'm a fan of dark humor. Corpse of Freedom is unlike most books you will read. There were questions that could have been answered to make the characters more developed. I didn't get the point of the friendships that didn't seem like friendships. But there was something about the book that kept me reading.
I was won this book in the Goodreads first reads giveaway. The book is very fast paced and fun to read. Stay away if you can't handle dark humor. I laughed, I cried...oh wait no I didn't, I just laughed. I'm glad I won this book.
#GoodreadsGiveaway #FirstReads Good book. Not great, but held my interest. The ending wasn't at all what I expected, but that is good thing. Unpredictable is always a good thing.
