Did Picasso invent modern art? So compelling is the myth of Picasso that one could be forgiven for thinking that he did. His mesmeric gaze of both matador and bull seems to hold the answer to the enigma of 20th century art. The enormity of Picasso's output, 20,000 works, and the diversity of techniques, media and styles are astonishing. Pablo Picasso used his immense talent and provocative imagery to pose the question "what is art meant to look like?" But has the personal fascination with the man obscured the originality and true meaning of his art? Introducing Picasso details how Picasso's early explorations with cubism resulted in a dynamic challenge not only to the modernists, but to the entire history of Western art.
Interesting combination of art analysis by Andrew Brighton and Graphic Illustrations by Andrezej Klimowski.
Information includes a biography of the artist, the deconstructing of the myth and tracing Picasso's artistic development. This also gives the reader an overview of the different art styles and philosophies that Picasso originated or joined, such as realism, modernism, cubism, surrealism and neo-classicism.
Brighton also discusses the various influences such as Nietzscheism and Marxism on Picasso's work. as well as the writers, Guillaume Apollinaire and Marc Jacob and also others.
Picasso's associates and female relationships are also covered.
While the photos are in black and white, there is a good amount of illustrations of Picasso's various periods: the blue, rose, cubism etc...
Finally, a fair descriptive analysis of Picasso's more important works and his philosophy behind creating them.
Three stars because it's not much more than a basic introduction into Picasso's life and art... but it's a very well done one. A quick read that will leave you with a firm understanding of the artist. Also the illustrations are above average. Recommended!
Hyvää ja mielenkiintoista analyysia Picasson töistä, mutta itseä häiritsi suunnattomasti, miten kubismin koloniaalista taustaa ei tuoda teoksessa ilmi.
