Victoria Jaye addresses the phenomenon of demonic fantasy in this book. Demonic fantasy is the pop culture view of demons, generally gleaned from movies. Even ministers buy into it and replicate it from their pulpits. There’s good reason to trace nearly all of this back to the movie The Exorcist .

In fact, Jaye spends quite a bit of time in the book describing movies that implicate demons. There are far too many to be covered in anything short of an encyclopedia, but she makes good choices and uses them to show how demons, in the popular mindset, are largely derived from fiction.

While the book could use some editing, it is heartfelt and informed. There’s clearly a larger story behind it as well. I discussed the issues it raises in a bit more detail here: Sects and Violence in the Ancient World. It certainly got me to thinking.
