Written by Jack Bickham as John Miles. This novel is listed in Ninety Classics of Crime Fiction 1900-1975, ed. Jacques Barzun and Wendell Hertig Taylor. A short novel set in the depressed hill country of south eastern Oklahoma, has a New York woman and a local librarian accidently uncovering information about an eleven year old mystery. Quick, enjoyable read.

Non-series - Ruth Baxter arrives in Noble, OK to obtain genealogic information about great-uncle John Bartelson. She is stonewalled and lied to by town residents and urged to leave by the undersheriff. She was told that Bartelson died single and alone. With the help of the town librarian, Doug Bennett a young Viet Nam veteran, she finds that Bartelson was married and had a son, and further that his widow still lives in the town. Bennett's help is not appreciated by some townsfolk and now they are both in jeopardy.
