Disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my feelings on Cory Cyr's latest novel. I was so anticipating this book after devouring her first novel Bite and Release, but this book was just bad and boring. Latch (Lachlan) McKay is a 25 year old computer game wunderkind who has a reputation for loving and leaving women. Haven Wells is a 37 year old book store owner and just coming off a 7 year relationship that is described as abusive, but doesn't really delve into detail. The pair meet at a party, they have a very intimate quickie by a pool, and then Haven passes out in a vomit covered drunken stupor. Thus begins a whirlwind romance where Latch pursues Haven, but because of her "abusive" past, is reluctant to move on with her life, claiming that she's too damaged for anyone, yet whenever they are together, the sparks fly, as does their clothing.
However, Haven isn't the only damaged soul in this story, but what bothered me most is that Latch's damage was hinted at in the beginning of the story, but made like it was no big deal. Only later on in the story when he pulled a Jeckyl and Hyde move, did his damage come into focus, and at that point, it really made little sense, and I frankly no longer cared about him.
Haven was too much of a whiner to ever become likable- whining that she couldn't love another person because her first boyfriend, the abuser, told her she was no good at anything, especially anything sexual.
Another massive issue I had was that this book clearly had not been edited. There were so many places where words were missing, or there were words that didn't belong that this story was disjointed and jarring. The mistakes kept popping up just as I was getting into the story, then a mistake, and I'd either have to mentally add a word or delete a word, then try and get back the rhythm that I had had going.
Sad that this book wasn't as fabulous as her first.
