1950s whodunnit set in a provincial repertory theatre. the theatrical setting is well done (as far as I can tell) with plenty of professional detail about stage production, acting etc. the presentation of the mystery is fair in the sense that all clues are there & the reader has a chance to work out whodunnit. all in all an enjoyable read even though the writing is not terribly inspired and the characters are not what you might call "rounded" - a criticism familiar to readers of formulaic detective stories like this.
Exit Charlie was chosen for the Fifty Classics of Crime Fictioin, 1950-1975 series. Alex Atkinson was, among other things, an actor, and the descriptions of life behind the scenes in a repertory theater are wonderful, sometimes even poetic. The mystery is well-plotted; in fact, I was sure I had figured it out only to discover I was wrong at the end, and I could look back to see all the clues the red-herrings had caused me to overlook.
