What You Need

Rate this book
New York Times bestseller Lorelei James introduces a new family for readers to fall in love with in the Need You series. The Lund name is synonymous with wealth and power in Minneapolis-St. Paul. But the four Lund siblings will each discover true love takes a course of its own…

As the CFO of Lund Industries, Brady Lund is the poster child for responsibility. But eighty hour work weeks leave him little time for a life outside his corner office. His brothers stage an intervention and drag him to a seedy night club...where he sees her, the buttoned up blonde from the secretarial pool who's starred in his fantasies for months.

Lennox Greene is a woman with a rebellious past—which she carefully conceals beneath her conservative clothes. She knows flirting with her sexy, but aloof boss during working hours is a bad idea. So when Brady shows up at her favorite dive bar, sans his usual snappy suit, and catches her cutting loose, she throws caution aside and dares him to do the same.

After sparks fly, Brady finds keeping his hands off Lennox during office hours is harder than expected. While she makes him feel alive for the first time in years, a part of him wonders if she’s just using him to get ahead. And Lennox must figure out if Brady wants her for the accomplished woman she is—or the bad girl she was.

“Show me that wild man.”

Brady Lund has been working his life away, too busy staying in control and managing his empire, he takes on the responsibility of the world, never allowing himself to just let loose. His brothers stage an intervention but their efforts are lost when he sees the blond bombshell from his company dancing right in front of him. He's had his eye on her for months but never made the move until now ...
Glasses that made him look hotter than ever—I’d take Clark Kent in his suit and glasses over Superman any day.

Lennox Greene has turned her back on her rebellious past, one she hopes to forget, but when Brady sees her at her old stomping grounds he challenges her to show him just how fun life could be. She wants to be more thank just "that kind of girl", but his offer is too tempting to pass especially when she sees the man behind the suit...
"God, woman, the way you move . . . it’s like making love to you fully clothed.”

Soon fun starts to cross the line and intentions and desires are questioned, can they be happy with "the who" they are now even when it was not "the who" they thought they had to be?

What You Need is my first non-cowboy loving story by the amazing Lorelei James, and it sucks to say though that I didn't love this as much as I thought I would, and it has nothing to do with her writing style just my connection with the main characters. I am a lover of all things alpha and sometimes I get lucky and find a good guy who is equally amazing, but Brady was lacking that little bit of extra oomph that I needed. Lennox and I didn't really connect, I honestly can't pin point what it was but sadly we never got there even in the end. I still finished it and liked it well enough and I will definitely read more, this is one of those sad cases where it was a me vs. the book kind of deals.

3.5 stars!

Started off promising. I thought it was going to be a solid 4 stars but then things the heroine did started to annoy the crap out of me. I can handle bouts of immaturity and insecurity among NA heroines considering their age but Lennox is 28 years old. She's supposed to be mature because of the stuff she went through, but her actions contradicts a lot of that.

I still enjoyed this book a lot. I enjoyed the hero Brady. He's not your typical Lorelei James hero. He's nerdy and awkward despite being smoking hot and rich. He was endearing at first but then he started to get on my nerves, too. Like Lennox, his actions doesn't seem to reflect that of 32 year-old man who also happens to be CFO of a big company.

Ugh. I don't know. Nothing really happened much. Don't get me wrong, the banter was great for the most part but I just wasn't bowled over by it. I did love the Lund clan. They're a hoot. I would love to read about Brady's brothers and sisters and cousins. Not a bad book to start a series. I could definitely see this one develop into something awesome as the series goes on...or not. But I'm liking the potential. Fingers crossed Ms. James writes more about the Lund clan in future books.

Lennox Greene is a floater in a temp group for Lund Industries in Minneapolis. Brady Lund is the workaholic CFO at the family-owned and operated company. She has recreated herself from a pretty tough start in life and he's trying to loosen up and, at his family's urging, have more of a life outside of work. Lennox has admired him from a distance and when Brady happens to show up at the dive from her past, he witnesses her letting loose and decides she's who he needs as a "tutor."

I liked Lennox, liked Brady but found their relationship uneven. There were times when they felt perfectly suitable for each other and loved their banter and romance. Then there would be a next move that just felt strange, awkward and inexplicable for where they were in their relationship. It just made it difficult to connect and stay invested in their romance but by the end they made sense.

It's a good start to the series, though not a strong one. The background workplace storyline made it more interesting. I liked the use of two narrators for Lennox and Brady's characters and both did a good job in their performances, distinguishing all of the characters nicely. The Lund family is certainly unconventional and should make for intriguing future stories in this series. I do plan to continue, even though I struggled with whether to round my rating up or down. It could go either way. 3.5 stars

What a horrible disappointment from a fave author. It's like Lorelei James sat down one day and decided that since NA romances were pretty popular these days, she would write one too. Problem is, I'm not sure she understands the difference between NA and YA. Lennox and Brodie were 32 and 28; but acted and talked like they were 18 going on 12. Insecurity, angst, and ridiculously immature conversations and actions ran rampant.

If I had to sum this book up in two words, it would be shallow and silly. Love you LJ, but I want to read about real grownups, not kids pretending to be adults on occasion...

I have to stop reading these books about millionaires and the women who just can’t seem to resist them. I’ve come to the realization that they just don’t do anything for me.

Brady Lund spends 80 hours a week in his office working. He never cuts loose and certainly doesn’t have time for a relationship. When his brothers drag him to a night club he can’t help but notice the blond who works at this company … and has starred in his fantasies since the moment he noticed her months ago.

Lennox has a rebellious past but she hides it beneath conservative clothes and when sparks fly between them at her favorite bar, she throws caution to the wind and dives into a relationship with Brady.

I seriously swear that this guy must never have seen a tattoo or a piercing in his life, and having these things doesn’t make you a rebel in this day and age. I swear, for the amount of times that his focus was on them, simply because he appeared to be fascinated by them … not the fact that they were a part of her, made me want to toss my reader across the room.

Let’s also talk about insta-love. And not so much in the case of our rebellious Lennox, but instead with our captivating hero Brady. I didn’t buy it. This is a guy who is so immersed in his work and that life and not looking for a relationship, and suddenly he’s all in?

So… I’ll be honest, I found myself skimming quite a bit because I just wasn’t interested in these two. I don’t know yet if I’ll try the next in this series or not… I’ll keep you posted.

Thank you Berkley team for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I was contemplating about whether I should DNF this or simply remove it from my list. 2016 just started and I didn't want to have a DNF this early! Unfortunately, the book is not working for me. I'm not sure how to describe it but I guess it feels too... "chatty", if that makes any sense. It's also a bit too formulaic.

DNF at 38%

I have to confess this is my first Lorelei James book but I had quite high expectations. everyone of my bookread friends love her books and I really could not wait to start this one.

but obviously Ms. James is trying out a new way of writing, which left me a bit .... let's just say unsatisfied

the book was sweet and nice and romantic and fluffy and I liked the characters (especially some of the secondary characters) and I WILL read the next book in this series .... all good things,

but

it was also kind of lame ... I missed the spark and the excitement

so, all in all, this is definitely not one of my favorite reads this year but nevertheless I liked the characters and can't wait to read more about this family

This is actually the first book I’ve read by Lorelei James, and it was so much fun to read. It’s a sweet contemporary romance with unique characters and little drama. I really enjoyed Brady and Lennox’s characters – Brady isn’t the typical millionaire hero, as he’s a little shy and awkward and has no social life, and Lennox is a woman with a wild past she’s trying to hide at her respectable job. Their romance is light and sweet, with just the right amount of intensity and sensuality to make for an incredibly satisfying read.

As CFO of Lund Industries, Brady Lund lives and breathes his job. He has zero social life, which his family has noticed and taken upon themselves to fix. They drag him out to a club, where it just so happens that the gorgeous blonde from the office that he’s had crush on for months is there too. So Brady finally decides to live a life other than his job, and he wants to start with Lennox.

Lennox Greene is shedding her wild-child past, and her job at Lund Industries is the beginning of her new life. But even though she can hide her tattoos under her clothes and take out her piercings, she can’t hide who she really is from Brady. With Brady, she can be her true self and deal with the baggage of her past. Falling for the millionaire CFO isn’t difficult, especially when the only time she comes alive is around him.

Brady curled his hand around the side of my face, his gaze firmly on the left side of my mouth. Then his thumb slid over to stroke my bottom lip. “This lip ring . . . Christ, do you have any idea how much I want to suck on it?”
The sexy way he growled that sent slow, delicious heat unfurling in my belly.
“Before the end of the day, Lennox, I’ll know what that metal feels like on my tongue.”

The steam in What You Need wasn’t crazy hot like I expected, but there was still a good amount to leave me satisfied. I adored how Brady is sexy-as-hell, and yet still a little awkward around Lennox. He’s definitely not a smooth playboy, which was something I appreciated. I’m a big fan of romances with rich heroes, but it’s a nice change to read about one who doesn’t have a revolving door of women.

If you love office romances, you’ll want to check this book out. Lennox and Brady are utterly sweet together, and I enjoyed the way their romance played out. This book is also so funny – mainly because of Brady’s family, and I’m hoping all of them will get books of their own! What You Need is a great start to a new series with the potential to become even better. I’m excited to read more from Lorelei James!

“I want more of you.”
“You have all of me.” I’d never said that to another man in my life and the fact I’d said it without conscious thought scared me a little.

Angeline, Slick and KcLu's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

We had 3 reviewers fighting to review this one, they are all long time fans of Lorelei's Erotic Romances and were excited for her first Contemporary. They all gave What You Need 5 stars and our Purest Delight Award.

Angeline - 5+ Stars
When I first heard that Lorelei James was releasing a contemporary romance series, I was ecstatic! I love when an author tries a new genre and is challenged by all that comes with it. Lorelei has blown me away with a beautiful romance that is sexy and sweet and I loved every second of it!

There are several things I love about What You Need. The characters seem like real people. The super-rich, hot hero works his gorgeous butt off for the family company and I could see myself drinking a beer with him, chatting about anything. Lennox, our beautiful heroine, reminds me of a real-life friend I have. I adore her! She’s grounded and a good person who knows how to have fun when she wants to.

The family dynamic is intriguing. They are an elite, powerful and wealthy family. The glimpses of Brady’s brothers and cousins has me looking forward to the next books. I hope they all get their own books eventually. I enjoyed them all so much.

The storyline was heart-tugging in parts (as any good book should be), heartwarming other times (Yay!) and 100% believable. It has been over a week since I finished the book. I want to immerse myself back into that world and stay there awhile longer.

What You Need is a 5+ Stars book that I fell instantly in love with!

Such a fun read, playful, and flirty. Loved it!

Great intro that pulled me in. I really liked both Lennox and Brady. They have totally different backgrounds and I enjoyed learning their stories. They had great interactions, a bit of verbal sparring and animosity happening (which I am a big fan of!). It was just so fun and entertaining to watch and that animosity grew into more. Great development as they get to know each other and things move forward.

Brady is the sweetest guy ever! He could also be a bit commanding and dirty. It was awesome! I liked the bit of edge Lennox had as well, I thought she was a touch chick. Together they had great chemistry together, there was so much passion between the two. I had so much anticipation for these two to physically connect, the build was killing me. It was totally worth the wait!

There are some ups and downs throughout but nothing too heavy. I thought there was a really good pace, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall story line and the characters. Really great writing. I really liked the secondary characters as well. Brady's family was great and I liked getting to know them and love how close they all are. I am really hoping each of the siblings get a story, I want more of them.

The ending was really sweet and I like how all the loose ends wrapped up. This was my first Lorelei James book and I will definitely read more.

Review by Trinette Dungee

Brady Lund was always impeccably dressed, showcasing his long, lean body in an insanely expensive suit. He was always immaculately coifed—his angular face smoothly shaven, his thick, dark hair artfully tousled, giving the appearance of boyish charm. As if a shark could be charming. My coworkers and I had speculated endlessly about whether the CFO plucked his dark eyebrows to give his piercing blue eyes a more visceral punch. And whether he practiced raising his left eyebrow so mockingly. For that reason alone I avoided meeting his gaze.

It’s time for a new book boyfriend and his name is Brady Lund.

Brady Lund eats, sleeps and breaths Lund Industries, literally. He’s a workaholic; he works seven days a week almost 24 hours a day. He even has a semi-secret bedroom and shower in his office. He has a reputation around the office…he’s a shark, he’s all suit and tie, he’s no non-sense, he’s a numbers guy and he’s HOT AS HELL!!!! But Brady’s also a self-proclaimed geek. He wasn’t always the devastatingly handsome guy that most see; he used to be a skinny, acne-prone geek, with zilch confidence. Some of those insecurities still linger so Brady’s not all that eager to live the playboy lifestyle that comes along with being a part of an extremely wealthy family. When the other Lund siblings and cousins feel the need to stage an intervention to get him to live a little, Brady is more than a little resistant. But when his prim and proper office dream literally falls into his arms (dressed like his best wet-dream) on the night his family forces him to go out…well, Brady’s thinking this might not be such a bad idea after all especially if it means he gets to spend time with Lennox Greene.

Lennox Greene is no longer the rebellious teenager with the strung out mother. Rings have been removed from the piercings, covered are the tattoos and gone is the chip on the shoulder, well sort of. The Lennox Greene of today where’s buttoned up blouses and pencil skirts; she’s the picture of conservative. Except for when her boss comes around. She isn’t sure why but for some reason Brady Lund brings out the sass in her. Lennox manages to keep any trace of her past covered until the night she decides to hang out with old friends and finds herself in the arms of none other than Mr. Suit himself, Brady Lund. If Lennox thought Brady looked good in a suit, the casual look he sported made her salivate. She can’t believe the side of Brady she’s seeing and more importantly how much she likes and is attracted to it. And when he enlists her help to bring more “fun” to his life she’s completely thrown for a loop. She quickly learns that there is a whole other side to Brady Lund that she just might get used to.

I absolutely loved these two. Brady was so much more than I initially expected him to be. He describes himself as a geek. Just check out his initial introduction to us….

The first time I saw her, I nearly walked into a wall. Not the behavior expected from the CFO of a multibillion-dollar corporation. And not the behavior I wanted the willowy blonde with the killer legs to witness. I’d suffered through too many years of being the gangly, bumbling, tongue-tied twerp to even approach her. Even now, when supposedly I was one of the most eligible bachelors in the Twin Cities, I erred on the side of acting aloof. So as far as she knew, I hadn’t taken notice of her at all. But I had. Had I ever. We’d crossed paths maybe . . . half a dozen times since I’d first set eyes on her in the lobby of Lund Industries. Ten months later I still didn’t know her name. I didn’t even know which department she worked in.

How can you not love this guy? But Brady surprised me. He was very manly, but not the typical overbearing alpha male. He’s so perfectly flawed. Even his attempts to first get to know Lennox were disastrous.

“Sydney. You were an English major. What’s the difference between disperse and disburse?” “Disburse means to pay out money. Disperse means to go in different directions,” a deep male voice answered……“Thank you for the clarification, Mr. Lund.”…..“I shouldn’t have to clarify that since you’ve worked here for—what, ten months? Financial terms should be familiar to you by now.” He was chastising me? First thing? My mouth opened before my brain screamed, STOP. “I’ve been employed here for almost a year, actually. And, sir, I’ll remind you that just because the office temps department is located on the sixth floor—one of the five floors that are the providence of the financial department—we floaters don’t specifically work only for the Finance department at Lund Industries. We also float between Human Resources, Marketing, Development and Acquisitions, as well as Legal.”

It seemed he and Lennox didn’t really get off to a good start. It was like they couldn’t help insulting each other and this was pretty much what their first few interactions were like. I honestly expected Lennox to be the more dominant personality but she too, showed her flaws and wore them proudly. Even though she did her best to hide her past, she didn’t make excuses for who she was. I really liked her. How could you not love her struggle to leave her past behind but then not lose sight of who she really is?

Aside from watching their relationship ship blossom, I loved the banter in this book. You know how much I love banter. And it wasn’t just between Lennox and Brady. It was Brady’s secretary Jenna.

Jenna knocked twice and walked in. Why she bothered to knock escaped me; there was no pause between the knock and her entrance. One time when I asked her why she knocked first, she said her Midwestern upbringing was too ingrained to just barge in. I warned her that someday she might barge in and find me in a delicate situation. She’d retorted that if I actually took the time to do something bad, raunchy or out of character, she deserved to be the first person to witness it.

It even existed between him and his family.

“Damn, Walker. Are you sure we won’t get stabbed in there?” My brother looked at me and shrugged. “When was the last time you used your medical insurance?” Hardly reassuring. “Quit being a pussy,” Nolan said to me. “See the rougher edges of our city.” The insult combined with a dare should’ve sent me through the door first. But I let Walker and Nolan lead the way; I’m nothing if not cautious. I looked over my shoulder at Ash just to make sure he wasn’t about to bail and cool his loafers in the car. “Get going. The sooner I don’t have my back to the door, the better.” “We should’ve brought Jensen with us,” I grumbled. “He’s a bigger target and he can run faster.” “Hell, they’d all want his autograph and they’d ignore us completely.” “Exactly. It’d give us a chance to get away.” Ash laughed.

This book was riddled with humorous banter. I found myself giggling out loud more than once. I love family series books and I especially love books about siblings. This is book number one in the Need You series and I can’t wait to read the rest. I really loved the writing in this book, this was one of those books where I could actually picture the scenes in my head, like I was watching a movie. I loved following Brady and Lennox overcome their insecurities and navigate their relationship and most importantly, I loved watching them (in my head) fall in love! I think this is my first Lorelei James book and I am definitely added her other works to by TBR list!

As CFO of Lund Industries, Brady Lund is about as buttoned-down as a guy can be. He's an anal retentive workaholic with a reputation for being a shark. His social life is non-existent and he's never actually had a real girlfriend. These things, however, just scratch the surface of who Brady Lund really is—they aren’t entirely accurate, and they don't even begin to do him justice. When his family stages an intervention in an attempt to get Brady to loosen up and live a little, he makes a move to start living a little on the wild side. The first step? Pursuing the hot blonde he’s had his eye on for months.

Lennox Greene is trying desperately to shed her wild child past. After years as a party girl, she's finally got a respectable job in the float pool at Lund Industries, and while her life isn't very exciting, it's stable and that’s good enough for her—for now. Brady has had his eye on Lennox for months. He’s a bit shy and not at all the smooth playboy everyone expects him to be, but now that he’s decided to do something about it, things are going to get interesting.

Good grief, this book was fun. Light and sweet with a walloping punch of heat—I couldn't get enough of Lennox and Brady. I loved how Brady was so multi-layered; it was impossible not to love every facet of him. Lennox is likewise richly layered, carrying around some baggage from her past and trying to reconcile that with the person she wants to be. There were pieces of Lennox I completely identified with—which, of course, just made me love her all the more. Watching these two navigate their relationship while also trying to figure out who they are as individuals was sometimes frustrating, but also kind of adorable, humorous, and swoony.

I'm not typically drawn to the millionaire stories, but this one appealed to me for a couple of reasons. It's set in Minneapolis, a city which—as a Minnesota native—I know and love. On top of that, it features a nerdy hero. I love nerdy heroes. No. I LOVE nerdy heroes. I was not disappointed—the nerdiness was just perfect for me and I was completely wrapped up in this story, laughing and swooning throughout the whole thing.

This book felt like a treat for my heart and now I’m all in—and excited for more of this sexy new series! ~ Shelly, 4.5 stars

~~~
Lennox Greene is a responsible, conservative woman. Well, she projects that image to the world. Lying beneath her subtle business attire is a woman with a rebellious past—a past she usually keeps hidden—but every once in a while, Lennox likes to let loose at her favorite dive bar, and of course it’s the same night that one Brady Lund is dragged inside by his brothers staging an intervention.
Brady Lund is the responsible one. At twenty-eight, he’s the youngest CFO in Lund Industries history. He works hard to stay on top of all his projects—this hard work translates into eighty hour weeks and little to no life. At his cousin’s and brother’s behest, Brady is dragged into Maxie’s where he spots the normally quiet and demure Lennox cutting loose and Brady wants to explore the wild side with her.
While there’s not a “non-fraternization” rule in place, Brady’s worried Lennox is using him to get ahead. And Lennox is worried Brady only wants one-side of her. They’re both trying to move into a new relationship—a relationship like neither has ever had before, but will their insecurities get in the way?
This was a solid start to Lorelei James’ new series featuring the Lund siblings. I really enjoyed getting to know each of them, but I was missing some of the heat that Ms. James usually packs into her books. This one was sweeter than normal—still very enjoyable however, and I do look forward to Walker’s story. ~ Missy, 4 stars
A nice start to a new series. It's very different from what we've seen from James so far so you'll need some time to adjust if you're a LJ fan but I'm intrigued enough about the Lund family to see what happens next.
The first time I saw her, I nearly walked into a wall.
Not the behavior expected from the CFO of a multibillion-dollar corporation.
Brady Lund is the responsible sibling, he’s an all work and no play guy. Who has been fascinated by the buttoned-up blonde from his office, but he’s afraid to make a move.
“So it’s my wild side that fascinates you?”
“Everything about you fascinates me—and it has since the first time I saw you ten months ago.”
Lennox had a bad childhood, and was a bit of a rebellious teenager. But she’s put her wild days behind her, intent on making sure everyone sees her as responsible and conservative. And she knows that sassing her boss isn’t a good idea, but everything about him just pushes her buttons.
Then Brady gets an intervention from his brothers, and they take him to a seedy bar, where he sees just how wild Lennox Greene is. And the sparks that fly between them is just too hard to ignore and soon they have trouble keeping their hands off each other.
I loved Lennox from the first moment I read her name. And the fact that she has tattoos and piercings just made me love her more. She’s feisty and funny and just awesome.
”It’s not a rumor; we are together. If you’re worried about los-ing your job, don’t be. I can make it very clear that anyone who fucks with you fucks with me.”
I really liked that Brady, while he might be very sexy now, wasn’t always so. In school he was the shy, dorky kid and now he’s the hot CFO of Lund Industries. He’s practical, loves numbers, liked his rules and have trouble being spontaneous. And I loved him.
Because no matter what anyone else called him—CFO, genius, shark, dork or beast—I could call him the only thing that mattered.
Mine.
Lennox and Brady were just wonderful together. I liked that Brady didn’t have commitment issues like most romance heroes has these days, and that he didn’t try to hide their relationship. And I loved how possessive and protective he was with her. The romance was so sweet and so spicy and I loved the slow-burn of it!
I also loved Brady’s family, and I can’t wait to read more books in this series. This is my first book by this author, and I am very impressed. She wrote a wonderfully sweet and sexy romance with great characters. Highly recommended.
If there is one author out there that can make you fall in love with a group of characters, that is Lorelei James. She's proven that time and again. But where I'm used to seeing her do that with a western setting, this is a bit different. Brady Lund and his family are billionaires. You can find athletes, business men, and yes maybe even a bit more rugged one. But at the center, it's that family dynamic and the connection that keeps me coming back for more. I am excited to explore that in this new series because I'm already hooked on all of them!
That being said, I went into this book thinking it was an erotic romance only to find it categorizes more as contemporary romance for me. The heat level is much lower than what I'm used to seeing from Ms. James. That doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing, just a different thing, because as much as the same focus on relationships and connection as her previous work is still there, I found I was missing a bit of the steam.
Nevertheless, this takes a simple and done before concept (billionaire falling for secretary working for his huge family empire company) and Ms. James makes it her own. I know to always trust that she will do that and that I will enjoy what she comes up with. Lennox is a spunky a heroine as I like to see. She's had a tough go at life but she's made something of herself, all on her own, and she's at a better place now. Brady is looking for a bit of adventure to loosen up his buttoned up, all work all the time, lifestyle. And as soon as he realizes he can have that with the woman he's been lusting after for a while, then all bets are off. And I loved seeing him let go!
The characters are perfect, the romance is perfect and takes things step by step. Not too rushed, not too slow. There is no unnecessary drama or angst thrown in for no reason. But it's also not one of those "too sweet" stories. It has the perfect blend I want in my contemporary romance. It kept me turning the pages so fast that I didn't even realize when we were getting near then end and then I couldn't stop.
All that, and my blue balls from the sexual tension aside, this is a series I'll be looking forward to seeing more of soon! Great job at putting your stamp on this trope Ms. James
Favorite quote:
"Brady Lund was always impeccably dressed, showcasing his long, lean body in an insanely expensive suit. He was always immaculately coifed - his angular face smoothly shaved, his thick, dark hair artfully tousled, giving the appearance of boyish charm.
As if a shark could be charming."
Thank you to Signet and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What initially drew me to What You Need was the stunning cover – it was very The Bourbon Kings-esque, and I loved The Bourbon Kings. Lorelei James has also been on my list of authors to try for some time now, and where better to start than a series kick off?
I enjoyed both main characters – Lennox was a responsible adult who took her job seriously. Her upbringing may have been rough, but she wasn’t someone who wallowed; she worked for everything she had and didn’t feel like the world ‘owed’ her. And Brady…oh, Brady. His character was so charming. He wasn’t inexperienced in the bedroom, but flirting and wooing weren’t art forms Brady had mastered. And he wasn’t afraid to let Lennox know that. What I thought was interesting with this one was that the hero and heroine were really neck and neck when it came to insecurities about their relationship. I really appreciated the even playing field as far as that was concerned. Also, while Brady was wealthy and Lennox worked for him, that wealth and power never dominated his character or the story. And if it had, I think Lennox would have tried to kick his ass.
While I really liked the characters, I did have a few issues with the story. I feel like there were times Lennox and Brady didn’t act their age. It makes me wonder what this story would have been like if it had been New Adult with Lennox and Brady (or even just Lennox) interning at Lund Industries. I think it could have added a bit of taboo and given the story a bit more oomph. Also, people were coming out of nowhere to tell Lennox she wasn’t good enough for Brady and then were either never heard from again or suddenly changed their minds and thought she was great for Brady.
What You Need was a fast-paced, entertaining read. If you enjoy stories that are character driven where you’re guaranteed to see more of them in future series installments, this is right up your alley. After reading the synopsis for the next book, I’ll be sticking around for more!
I really enjoyed this romance between an uptight workaholic CFO, Brady, and a reformed wild child temp worker, Lennox, who works for his family's company.
What I liked: 1. Brady and his attempt to make their relationship more then sex. He spent a lot of time wooing Lennox and they actually dated.2. Brady's family- he has brothers, a sister, and cousins, all are single, and all seem very interesting so I'm guessing all will get future books. 3. Kiley, Lennox's roommate a social worker who works with troubled kids. I loved that subplot, with Brady and Lennox and their interactions with the kids. 4. The story is set in the Twin Cities. A refreshing change from New York, LA. Being from WI I got the north woods references and all the Vikings talk.
What I disliked: I felt that Brady had an inner alpha/Dom personality that was hinted at but not explored. I also was waiting for some conflict between pierced, tatted Lennox and his mother, but that was glossed over too.
Overall it is a solid contemporary romance. I highly recommend this book and look forward to continuing on with series.
I finally read my first Lorelei James book and... it's love! I've had this book for over a year now (thanks, Berkley!) but I just never got around to reading it. (This should be my blog's tagline, for real.) One of my besties started the series last week and talked about it so much that I decided I needed to read it, too. I'm glad I did, too, because I enjoyed it so much... so much that I might've started a full-on binge by diving right into the second book after finishing this one.
Between the sexy, but dorky-in-a-good-way hero, Brady, and reformed "bad girl" heroine, Lennox, it didn't take long for me to find myself totally enamored by this book. While I do love a good workplace romance, I'm not always a huge fan of the billionaire boss and the secretary thing. But there was something special about Brady and Lennox. They stand out in a trope that I've found a little tiresome. I think maybe it was because Brady wasn't the stereotypical arrogant, demanding alpha billionaire. Sure, he was hot and rich and he even had a bit of alpha in him, but he was also more relatable. I think it was the dorkiness and the fact that he was a bit unsure of himself at times. (And that he wasn't a manwhore... reformed or otherwise.) Lennox was a great heroine, too. She was smart and sassy. I liked how she'd overcome her past and moved on to build a good life for herself.
I was addicted to the characters and their chemistry. I loved the pace at which things moved with them and how things developed. I enjoyed how Lennox helped bring Brady a bit out of his shell. He couldn't remain all buttoned up when she was around. She couldn't help but let a little of her "bad girl" self out with him, either. What they had was real and sexy and I was rooting them on from the very start.
I also enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about the other Lund men who will star in books of their own in this series. I've already nearly finished the second book and I'm eager to start the third. The Need You series was a perfect introduction to Lorelei James as far as I can tell. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future, even beyond this series.
Coffee dates with What You Need
First date: I was both curious and nervous about meeting the Lund’s. Especially Brady Lund, when I heard he was so freakin’ hot. I worried he would be one of the pretentious snobs. James delivered a nerdy hero who is socially awkward, a little damaged and a whole lotta sexy! I adored Brady. He is confident in the boardroom and shy around the ladies. He is intrigued by Lennox Green when he hears her laughing and it takes him ten months to learn her name! Ten Months! A family intervention and Lennox soon have him taking chances and the ride was sweet, funny and adorkable.
Second date: We meet some of the Lund family in little side threads that worked wonderfully as our couple kept bumping into each other. James provided depth and interesting side stories from troubled youth in the city to family dynamics and interventions. Lennox is a true gem. Her childhood was horrible, and she spent her teens as a runaway. She is one of the lucky ones, who got her life on track and put herself through school. At work, she is very prim and proper, hiding her tats and removing her piercings but that does not hide her outspokenness. The interaction and banter between Lennox and Brady was hilarious and laced with sexual tension. This was a slow building romance and the buildup was delicious. James created scenes without intimacy that were smoking hot and heart-thumping.
Third date: Our couple finally tango between the sheets and it was worth the wait. However, both characters experience some growing pains as they navigate their relationship towards our. Brady shows tremendous growth finding balance between career and life outside the office. I really enjoyed this couple and appreciated that the growth came from within and the drama was quickly diffused. Their story wraps up nicely and realistically.  James brought depth, humor, family and a realistic ending. I am eager to being my next coffee dates with this series and hope for updates on this couple.
Hotness Rating 3 out of 5
This first book of the Need You series is a far cry from the down and dirty hotness that many of us associate with Lorelei James. What You Need still gives us some heat, but has a much sweeter quality to it than I was expecting. I enjoyed it quite a bit and will definitely be reading more of this series.
Lennox Greene was such a likable protagonist. She came from hard times, worked her way out and has a drive to never go back. But, when she lets loose Lennox knows how to have fun. This is why she compulsively keeps her personal life and fun side away from the office.
Brady Lund is a very different kind of "rich boy" that I normally read. I loved that he came across as approachable. He was a hard worker that would do anything to contribute to the family company, but once committed was ready to explore a lighter side of himself. Granted this exploration initially was strictly to get his cousins off his back, but he embraced it all the same.
The cousins and family were very likeable. I would love to read more of them. This family may be uber rich and able to have anything at their fingertips, but they seemed like everyday people. The type that you could hang out with, be yourself and know you would have a great time with them.
I'm excited about this new series and am looking forward to reading more as it unfolds.
Brady Lund is CFO of Lund industries, Lennox Greene is a temp for Lund Industries, they couldn't be more different. Brady noticed Lennox instantly but with his fair share of failures in the past never got up the nerve to approach her. When he finally sees her on his floor he does! He talks to her! Although it doesn't turn out the way he would have liked it to. Soon after it seems like chance encounters are bringing them together, that must mean something.
Lennox decides a date with Brady couldn't hurt. There is definitely attraction. Brady has conquered the business side of his life but he needs help finding his way in his personal life, and recruits Lennox to help him with that. The only problem is Lennox has already lived out her wild side at a very young age and doesn't know if this is a good turn of events for her.
I love the writing in this story! Lennox was the wild child turned good and Brady was to nerd wanting to find his wild. Such a well written story in every way! I love the characters and the banter. It was cute seeing how Brady struggled with Lennox at times. I really took to Lennox right away as well. She is strong willed and just doing what she needs to to survive after having a pretty crappy childhood.
I am very excited to continue with this series!
This was an incredible read. The storyline was fantastic. Brady Lund is the CFO of LI and Lennox Greene is a temp worker that does different positions. The story follows them as they fall in love. Brady is a really sweet character. I love how he is with Lennox and I find him really cute. Lennox really intrigued me because she has a tattoos and a lip ring. I really loved her attitude and her work ethic. Also, I thought the Lund family was endearing and lovable. I can’t wait to read Walker, Annika and Jensen’s stories. Also, this was my first Lorelai James book and it certainly will not be my last. The ending was really sweet. I am happy that Brady and Lennox got their happily ever after. Overall, an amazing read.
What You Need was a fun and flirty read filled with sweet and sexy moments. There was insta-chemistry and kinda a slow build but not a great burn. This was as hot and heavy as you may be used to for LJ but just as good.
The narration was spot on and was perfect to my ears. It was an enjoyable listen while working.
