Cage of Gossamer
A sylph king desires her mortal heart. She’s losing it to his huntsman.
Eveline Forsyth has one wish: to finish her grueling blacksmith apprenticeship and leave behind the mining town that claimed her parents’ lives. But Eveline’s hopes for a better future are shattered when she’s claimed by the Fair Folk—a cruel civilization of sylphs known to murder mortals for sport.
When Eveline attempts to flee her would-be killers, she’s kidnapped from her home and brought before a powerful king of the Fair Realm. But rather than condemn Eveline, the king takes an interest in her—one that only grows as Eveline seeks to escape captivity in his court.
Eveline soon discovers that the Fair Realm is as alluring as it is treacherous. But for every friendship formed—first with the king’s mercurial sister and then with his rakish huntsman, Alder—Eveline uncovers a new dark secret about the Fair Folk’s war-torn lands.
And when Eveline finds herself falling for Alder instead of the king, she’s thrust into a deadly game of court intrigue that could cost not only her own life, but the lives of everyone she’s come to hold dear.
The Fair Realm is no place for a mortal maiden. Good thing this blacksmith knows the deadliest weapons are formed by fire.

ARC Review - Intriguing, fantastical, and emotional
I have never went through so many emotions and "Ha I know whats going to happen next - Wait what?" moments than in this book. When I started this book I was a bit scared off the length and thought it was such a straight forward plot that I was like "If it's supposed to be a series, how is this 500 pages already?" This feeling stopped at around 150 pages where I knew there was more to it. Safe to say after like 15 chapters, I knew I would rather read all night than to stop and not know all the secrets. So guess what, I stayed up and finished this book in like 7 hours. I already love the world and want to know more.
The characters feel so real and rich. Starting with Eveline, I was confused what her deal was when I started it and the more I kept going, the more I understood her. Since the claiming, I was like "yeah same girl… I would also see to it that I could leave asap", but it was also real how she was starting to open up to Zinnia and Alder. I feel bad for Eveline having to process so much and having her world turned upside down the entire time. That she has not once snapped is incredible and she is such a strong main character.
Moving on to Alder, Zinnia and Hadrian. I group them together because it kinda makes sense. If you pay attention to the exact words that are used to describe them and have more braincells than me at 11pm, you might figure out the plottwist faster than me, but boy my emotions have been played with. I liked Zinnia almost immediately and felt bad for her mood swings. She was warm and kind to Eveline and felt like a real sister to her. I was also immediately intrigued by Alder and hoped Evie and him would be the romance subplot… Well, I also cried for them at like 60%. I am interested to find out more about him. Hadrian is interesting because we don't really know him yet he feels so important. I like him a lot more in the second half than the first, that's for sure. But alas, I need more to form an opinion.
The rest of the cast feels real too and all the decisions make sense. Without spoiling, I am REALLY excited to figure how who exactly will stand out to me in the second book regarding one plotline (iykyk).
That being said, the worldbuilding is done exaptionally well and merges perfectly into the story. You learn so much with Evie and I always love when this is done in books. It feels natural without it being infodumpy. Once the plot started to pick up, I was flying thtough the book and loved every second of it. I can't wait to get back into this world once the second part comes out next year. I am already excited. A book worth every second and honestly the fresh air I needed in the genre.

Dear reader, do you expect this book to be young adult or new adult?
My rating and subsequent recommendation differs greatly based on your expectations. I would call this a really good young adult fantasy romance, but lacklustre new adult one. I feel like this book is on the verge of the genres, but is too soft in places to really appeal as new adult.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's start with the good things.
The premise sets off really good - I am tired of arranged marriages where she falls for the target, and this wasn't that. There wasn't age gap, even when we're dealing with immortal beings. And she was engaged before - you don't see this often, that was a nice touch.
I was worried for half the book the plot was going to go in a too boring and predictable way, but when the plot twists hit, they hit good. Without spoiling anything, I liked a lot of the narrative choices that happened in the second half of the book.
The worldbuilding was interesting, it started a bit basic but bloomed in the second half of the book. And some details, like the daffodil plants in the court, seemed fresh and interesting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My problem with the story, and why I'm not rating it higher, lies mostly in the way the narrative was handled.
The "because tradition, because our god made it so" was used to explain a lot in this story. Do I think the story makes less sense because of it? No. Do I find it a boring plot device? Very.
Unfortunately, too much of the story and worldbuilding was delivered through info-dumping or someone sitting Evie down and explaining what happened to her. This might not bother you. But I kept wishing real hard Evie would find something out on her own, instead of being on this ghost ride.
And last thing - the second quarter of the book. It all made sense eventually, and lead to some interesting plot points. But it dragged on so much I had to push through. I don't know if the payoff was worth it to spend so much detail on it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overall, looking back, I liked the plot of this book. It just didn't live up to my expectations and made me roll my eyes a bit too much for something sold as new adult.
If you are looking for a fantasy world where deception is laced between the pages, magic is dangerous, and twist and turns between the characters have you questioning everything you know? Cage of Gossamer will have you breaking free of your own mind and take you on a wild ride throughout the enchanted Fair Realm.
In this story readers are introduced to our FMC Eveline. She is a blacksmith apprentice who ends up being the unlucky soul to be taken from the Mortal Realm into the Fair Realm. She, like the reader, is immersed into a dangerous world that is unknown and threatening. As she becomes acquainted, I find her emotions are relatable and sympathetic. Alder is the MMC and the aforementioned Huntsmen. Their scenes together had tugged on my heartstrings so much that I was lost in the mystifying emotion that I didn't realize the high-stakes plot closing around me.
The deep worldbuilding Ormsbee weaves is enough to bespell any fantasy reader (me included!) and is my favourite aspect of reading this story. For those who love political intrigue and mind games, you will find it here. At first, it is slower but once you get into the Fair Realm, the plot events and the interactions become more real. By the end, I could look back on the story and appreciate the author's incredible skill at delivering plot twists and tension.
This is book 1 in The Gossamer Chronicles and I am interested to see how this world and its characters are built upon in future installments.
Thank you to Finch & Gumption and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC copy.
Cage of Gossamer
by K.E. Ormsbee
Thank you so much to K.E. Ormsbee for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. 💙
✨ Some worlds are built from dreams… and some secrets are woven into the very fabric of magic. ✨
Cage of Gossamer drew me into a beautifully atmospheric world filled with mystery, imagination, and a sense of wonder that had me completely captivated.
K.E. Ormsbee has a way of creating stories that feel like stepping into a strange and enchanting dream. The writing paints such a vivid picture, bringing the world to life with its delicate magic, hidden dangers, and the feeling that something extraordinary is waiting just beyond the page.
I loved the sense of discovery throughout this story — uncovering secrets, exploring the unknown, and watching the characters navigate a world where nothing is ever quite as simple as it seems. The characters bring so much heart to the journey, each with their own fears, strengths, and reasons to keep fighting.
There is something truly special about a fantasy that feels both beautiful and unsettling, and Cage of Gossamer captures that balance perfectly. It’s a story filled with imagination, emotion, and a magical atmosphere that stays with you long after finishing.
A stunning escape into a world of mystery and magic — perfect for readers looking for something unique and enchanting. ✨
I found Cage of Gossamer to be an enjoyable introduction to K.E. Ormsbee’s writing and as my first book by this author, it definitely left me wanting to read more. The combination of fae courts, political intrigue and slow burn romance immediately choked and drew me in and I was excited to see where the story took me.
Eveline was an easy character to root for. I really liked that she was a blacksmith, it made her feel a little different from the typical romantasy heroine, and her determination to survive in such a dangerous world kept me interested . The relationship with Alder developed at a good pace, and I enjoyed watching their connection grow amidst all the tension and court politics.
The world building was rich and atmospheric, creating a beautiful but dangerous fae realm that was easy to picture. There was plenty of mystery to keep the pages turning even though I did find the pacing slow at times and I wasn’t quite as emotionally connected to the story as I’d wanted to be.
Overall, this was a solid start to a new romantasy series. While it didn’t completely sweep me off my feet I did enjoy the journey and will happily continue with the series to see where Eveline’s story leads next.📚
Review of advance copy
Eveline has her future mapped out: she's going to finish her blacksmithing apprenticeship and leave the small town she grew up in. But her life takes an unexpected turn when she's selected by Fair Folk as their sacrifice. Now she is held in a foreign land and forced to undergo her Finishing as the King courts her. But nothing is as it seems and Eveline soon realizes that she cannot trust anyone.
Eveline is wary and suspicious of the sylphs. As an orphan who has experience loss over and over, she knows that the only person she can trust is herself. She tries hard to succeed against the challenges she faces just so she can eventually reject the king and be permitted to go home. But when everyone is lying to her in one way or another, it's hard for her to see the greater picture. Despite her naiveté, she strives for her own personal freedom and refuses to be victimized. As such she makes for a fully compelling character.
Cage of Gossamer starts as a classic fairy tale style plot but gradually takes a very interesting direction. Full of twists and turns, you'll be surprised to see where the story goes. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
✨ ARC REVIEW ✨
Holy smokes. THIS was a fantasy book of note. 😮💨🔥
The world-building? NEXT LEVEL.
The character development? NEXT LEVEL.
The plot twists? Excuse me?! 🤯
This fantasy follows Eveline, a girl who is forced from the human world into the Fae world, where she is thrown into experiences that challenge her mind, body, and soul.
And just when you think you have a handle on what’s happening… you absolutely do not.
About halfway through, I actually found myself thinking, “Okay, I get it. Wow. Very cool. Can we move onto something else now?”
HAHA. NOPE. 😂
Because then the story SHIFTED. And shifted again. And AGAIN.
Things are not always what they seem, and some of the reveals had me sitting there like… 👁️👄👁️ WHAT?!
By the time I finished, I was completely invested and genuinely shook by where the story went. I finished this book in TWO DAYS and could not stop thinking about the storyline when I wasn't reading it.
If you love fantasy, Fae, immersive world-building, complex characters, and plot twists that make you question everything you thought you knew… you need to pick this one up.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5/5
Thank you to K.E. Ormsbee and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cage of Gossamer pulled me into such a beautifully atmospheric world, full of wonder, mystery, and delicate magic that stays with you long after the last page. K.E. Ormsbee's writing has this dreamy, enchanting quality, and I loved uncovering the story's secrets alongside Eveline as she navigates the treacherous Fair Realm.nEveline made for such a compelling FMC, strong and resourceful even as she's swept into a world of deals, bargains, and court intrigue. The slow-burn dynamic with Alder added a lovely warmth, while the fairy king brought just the right amount of danger. The pacing and world-building felt expertly done, unfurling into a story that's equal parts dark and gentle, exploring freedom, power, and choosing one's own path. A few twists genuinely caught me off guard!
Thanks to NetGalley & KE Ormsbee for this ARC: all
opinions are my own!
For fans of Court of Thorns & Roses, this fantasy book is filled with betrayal, plot twists, and where you aren’t sure who is on Eveline’s side! I absolutely loved the world building of magic and landscape you can’t always trust, but also the concept of priests and acolytes controlling the narrative. It is unique, a fast-moving plot, and filled with morally-gray characters. I’m obsessed with the magical flowers and petals, good vs evil, and the lions! It’s completely appropriate for all ages, as it doesn’t have any spice, but a lot of romance. I cannot wait for the second because Ormsbee really build up foreshadowing for a lot of the characters! Definitely an intriguing read!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it certainly won’t be the last.
I thoroughly enjoyed Cage of Gossamer and I can’t wait to see where the story leads in book two. I was so surprised by the twists and turns. For a second there I was worried it was going to be too predictable, but it certainly wasn’t!
Eveline is a great FMC, and I found it easy to root for her.
I loved the world of the fair folk and found the world building easy to follow. Hall Kestrel sounded so beautiful i wanted to jump into the book and go there immediately.
Waiting until next year for book two is going to be a killer!
August 27, 2026Thank you to BookSirens and K.E. Ormsbee for giving me the opportunity to read and review this advanced copy for free, leaving a voluntary review. I was a little overwhelmed at first, with the amount of pages, and the writing seemed slow at first, but that didn’t last long. This book kept me on edge most of the time. It’s like nothing I read, and the details are more than I could ask for. The worst part? I was really hoping there would be finality… but I’ll have to check out book 2 next year! Let the waiting begin!
K.E. Ormsbee is back in the fantasy realm!
I savored every morsel of this book’s rich prose with all the imagery! I was transported there alongside our beloved characters. And so much witty banter: “It’s already been such a full day. I simply don’t have the energy for treason.” *SWOONS*
I highly recommend clearing your schedule before you pick up this book—I couldn’t put it down! Eagerly anticipating the sequel!!
This was such an interesting read, it kept getting more engaging as the book developed. I loved the theme of artifice throughout (I know we're all used to how faeries and fae operate by now). And I think it was so cool that on the surface the book seemed like many other fae trope books around, but it wasn't! I found it so refreshing, and I wasn't expecting the direction that it went. I really can't wait for the next book!
Cage of Gossomer was a surprise. I was not expecting the twists and turns it took.
If you love stories with strong FMC's and a world steeped in deals and bargains, you might really like this story.
It was easy to read and follow, and I found aspects of the lore well done.
My only issue was the romance; it just wasn't for me. However, keep in mind this is just personal preference.
ARC REVIEW FROM NetGalley
For fans of all things fae, this is a must read. I loved the intricate world building that kept me engaged and was easy to picture.
Full of plot twists, misdirection, and trickery I was kept on my toes the whole way through. If you like more traditional depictions of fae, you’ll be a huge fan,
Not only was the writing well done and absolutely beautiful, I was invested from the first few pages and can’t wait for more.
Full of plot twists, misdirection, and trickery I was kept on my toes the whole way through. If you like more traditional depictions of fae, you’ll be a huge fan,
I was so into this. I swear I really was until the whole plan and everything was revealed a good 100-115 pages before the book ended. By that point I just skimmed it just to finish it cause I'd lost interest at that point.
Wow! This book is so magical. I feel like I’ve been waiting a lifetime for its release. I tore through “Cage of Gossamer” in exactly one week, and it genuinely consumed my life. I was thinking about the plot twists and high-stakes decisions while eating dinner and studying for my classes. If you like books with INCREDIBLE world-building, tension, characters you feel like you truly know, and a strong female protagonist, then you NEED this book. I can’t wait for the second book to be released. I feel like my life will resume with the characters in the fall of 2027.
