Untested chemical reactions in process… When Staff Sergeant Galen Welc is handed Temporary Additional Duty orders that move him to the Marine Corps base at Twentynine Palms, he thinks he’s prepared for what’s to come. Known for his uncanny ability to spot improvised explosive devices, he’s pitted against the latest in defense technology. He trusts his instincts and his training, but they may just be leading him somewhere—and to an explosive reaction with someone—he could never see coming.
Sam is a wandering queer romance author who sleeps little and reads a lot. Happiest in a foreign country. Twitchy when not mentally in motion. Her name is Sam, not Sammy, definitely not Samantha. She’s a dark/cynical/jaded person, but hides that darkness well behind her obsession(s) with shiny objects.
Rushed and sort of forgettable, this is not S.A. McAuley's best work.
I really like S.A. McAuley. I think she is super talented, and I like how she focuses on geeky men (I LOVE me a nerd!). What kills me is that this story had lots of potential. Parts of it really shone. I loved the dialogue and the little jokes between the two MCs, and I found myself grinning at times while reading. However, that was really the only highlight.
I think for me, the premise of this short story was just... off. Galen is known for his ability to detect IEDs, and I was expecting that fact to lead us to something BIG. Instead, that plot point sort of fizzled in the end. I found the whole thing to be really anticlimactic.
Same with the romance. There was a nice buildup and then... *meh*. The chemistry didn't quite connect and something just felt incomplete.
I know that stories at this length are difficult to pull off, but I still wanted more out of this one.

That's it! I wanted more okay?!
I really enjoyed the idea behind this story, and I'm so ticked off that I get cheated out of the full experience. I need another 285 pages people! Where is it????
Even as short as it was, it was enough to perk my interest. I had fun.
S.A. McAuley has managed to make me truly care about her characters and cry over them in as little as FOUR PAGES (This is What a Cold Lake Looks Like), so I have to admit that I was expecting more from her.
This story was brilliant in the nerdy buildup, but a bit disappointing in the follow through. Fade to black sex AND no kiss as they walk off into the sunset together?! *pouts* Not cool, bro.
Who doesn’t like hot military men? And I like the guys in this story because they are struggling with their emotions—not something you get to see very often in reality unless you are close to a man in uniform. And while military PR people all over the planet would probably cringe at seeing their elite’s innermost secrets revealed like this, the undeniable truth is that they are human, like the rest of us, and deserve to be loved for who they are.
In a somewhat amusing confrontation of “man against machine”, this story focuses on Galen, a Marine known for his ability to detect drones, and Zach, a man determined to design a drone offense system that can beat any human. Galen is pretty sure about his abilities on a professional level, not to say arrogant and slightly cocky. On the other hand, he is totally insecure about his skill for attracting the kind of man he is interested in. Zach isn’t exactly a man magnet either, or so he thinks, and I found the resulting “dance” between two men who are normally awkward and somewhat nerdy very entertaining. Their antics, be they chats or interactions in real life, went from cute to hot, and their developing relationship gave me hope for more.
If you like military men and those who work with them, if you enjoy stories about men who are set to oppose each other professionally, but fall for each other on a personal level, and if you’re looking for an entertaining and very hot read, then you will probably like this short story.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads
This is a very short read, but with a clever title, and two very clever men. One a Marine with amazing intuition, and one ... a rocket scientist. Throw in the use of a traffic app with a messaging system and a fun idea takes shape. I would have happily read more, but as an appetiser it was delicious.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads. Anomaly was a quick short read. The story moved very fast.
Galen a Marine, and Zach a Rocket scientist make contact through a road app. I found the way they met amusing. I don't think that there was much more that could be added to the story other than a little more to the sex scene. It was short and to the point.
I found it was lighthearted and found myself chuckling frequently. A nice quick read.
