When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.
In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.
Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.
Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.
Reader This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.
Samantha Cayto is a Boston-area native who practices as a business lawyer by day while writing erotic romance at night—the steamier the better. She likes to push the envelope when it comes to writing about passion and is delighted other women agree that guy-on-guy sex is the hottest ever.
She lives a typical suburban life with her husband, three kids and four dogs. Her children don’t understand why they can’t read what she writes, but her husband is always willing to lend her a hand—and anything else—when she needs to choreograph a scene.
She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and the New England Chapter and credits RWA, NEC and the wonderful friends she’s made there with helping her become a published author.
Pay attention to the reader advisory, which states: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.
I am not going to drop my rating due to the numerous rape scenes, because I knew exactly what I was getting into.
As sci-fi goes, this is moderately well developed. The humans had to leave Earth due to depleted resources (SHOCKER alert), but one of the planets they settle, which they refer to as "Seven," has already been claimed by an alien race.
This alien race, the Travians, is a matriarchal society. Women rule and lead; men fight. The Travians also look very much like humans, except they're much bigger and taller, and, as is fitting, have huge cocks. Surprise!
Wid is captured on Seven for mild rebellion against the Travians and is given to Kell, the captain of an alien ship, as Kell's pet slave (thus the title in case you haven't figured it out yet).
Kell doesn't really want a pet, but that doesn't stop him from fucking Wid again and again, first against Wid's will and later with gray-area consent.
Of course, at some point, Wid takes pleasure in the brutal fucking and craves it. Is it consent then or just Stockholm syndrome?
The sex is plentiful, hot, and rough in an utterly porny, depraved way; it's a hazy sci-fi naughty fantasy.
Obviously if violence/rape are a trigger for you, DO NOT READ.
Wid and Kell develop a sort of emotional bond, but Kell has a wife/female mate on his home planet. He loves her and lusts after her and has children with her.
The Travian society is fine with males having male pets/lovers/consorts, so this isn't really a big deal.
Except it is. At least to me.
Because if I'm going to read through rape and violence, I want an emotional payout. Yes, Wid and Kell get closer, but Wid is still just a pet. He'll always be JUST A PET.
I was expecting a deeper connection, a mating maybe, but that didn't happen. The ending is a HFN, I suppose, but I wanted at once less and more out of this story.
This story takes place in a future in which the earth's resources have been depleted. Humans have gone out into space in search of new places to habit. However, one colony planet, a more poor colony, has had ongoing tension against an advance alien race. A group of young humans from the planet get taken as prisoners when they attempt to vandalize the properties of the Travians in protest. As punishment, they all become the sex slaves of members of a Travian warship. The first book, Captain's Pet, focuses on Wid and Kell, the ship's Captain.
It was 70% non-con. They are raped (some violently) every day, kept naked and leashed as pets, and forced to submit to their masters as they are gifts to them, a reward from their council. The young men are abused and beaten by some of the members of the warship but treated well by others. Over time, however, a bond does grow between Wid and Kell, especially as he learns more about them (and when he finds out he is the lesser of the evils and better a master who is kind to you than one who is not).
There is no real romance, at least not in the traditional sense. Wid and Kell form a bond, and while Wid falls in love with Kell, it is Stockholm syndrome and trauma bonding for sure. Kell has a wife and children back home who he adores, but he also forms a special bond with Wid and comes to care for him. We also get a peak at what Travian culture is like (a matriarchy), a bit of politics, and class structures.
Overall I enjoyed this book and excited to start the next one, which focuses on Joel, who caused many of them to get caught. This is not for everyone but for anyone interested, please check trigger warnings.
I didn't think I'd end up loving this book so much, but saying that I am a m/m Sci Fi fan...especially if it's set in deep space, on board ship, and there's an intriguingly different alien race involved. I also love slave fic so putting the two together with a provoking storyline, memorable characters (both human and alien) and some well thought out world and culture building—well, I really shouldn't be surprised at how much The Captains Pet kept me engrossed!
"This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture"
Those are the warnings given and there's no sugar coating it. Rape and abuse are uncompromisingly portrayed from the onset, but these are a race of technically advanced humanoid aliens whose culture, codes of ethics, scruples, morals, standards and ideals are so far in opposition to those of the people they're in conflict with, they just see taking these defiant, inferior beings as 'spoils of war' because of their superiority. Their prisoners are not viewed as equals, ergo they can do with them as they please without compassion, conscience or remorse; so because of that Wid and the rest of the captured boys are given (as a reward) to certain members of the crew of Kell's ship to be kept as sex slaves and pets.
More unfortunately, because of the enmity between the two races, a few of the Travian crew are even more hostile towards humans than others, and their treatment of the slaves is far more brutal and uncivilized than the rest of the crew, who still take their pleasure forcibly from their 'pets' as a matter of rote, but in a detached way, still look after the boys they've acquired. Making sure they're well fed and allowed time together daily with their fellow captives in a community room, provided for the boys on board the ship. A room that contains a pool with restorative properties to help the boys heal quicker from the rough handling they endure nightly from the huge aliens. Nothing ever condones their actions, but in an extremely twisted way, the boys have a more 'comfortable' existence than they ever lead on the ravaged planet they were taken from.
What follows isn't just a story about gratuitous hard limit sex scenes, but one that also focuses on how Wid and the rest of the boys constantly fight for survival. All the time plotting to find ways to escape their predicament and forced confinement, while learning more about the cryptic alien race who actually live in a completely different political and social system than originally thought by their adversaries.
Even though a relationship of sorts develops between Wid and Kell, the Travian Captain; because of their differing cultures and dynamics, the attachment between them never evolves into a formulaic hearts and flowers style romance. Not even when they finally go beyond the non con master/slave situation...a big part of why I loved this so much. To have gone in that direction would just have turned this into another predictable sex driven, slave/capture plot, but this also has a damned good backstory that made it an attention grabbing read that personally I couldn't put down, and in my opinion is a refreshing step up from the usual offerings.
Wid is feisty… a fighter…and the development of his and Kells 'relationship' from being totally non consensual to a tentative bond—which to me, because of Wids nature, never felt like Stockholm Syndrome—is well paced and at times surprisingly exciting. Despite Kell's initial role in the story, I reluctantly found myself slowly growing to like the alien captain and a couple of his crew members. Their unusual culture fascinating to say the least, as more information about Kell's world and its politics were fed into the story.
Did it ever excuse their treatment of Wid and the others? Absolutely not...but it gave more insight into why they acted as they did, and as insight garners more understanding, it became a vice versa situation for Kell, as the more he learned about the young prisoner, the more he also began to view Wid as something other than just a mindless sex pet who satisfied his sexual needs...the twist coming when long term, underlying unrest on the ship between Kell and his aggressively ambitious first mate and his faction, puts the boys in a position of having to make choices that, as a means of long term survival, are the last ones they expect to be acting on!
I loved how Samantha Cayto took such a harsh subject and made it readable, without ever feeling too squirmy. Her writing style is very easy and I've found everything I've read by her a very enjoyable reading experience, but this one in particular did feel like a more stand out read and is definitely my favourite up to now. I know the subject matter won't be for everyone; rape is a hard trigger. However, if like me you're a reader with no particular boundaries, I think you'll really enjoy this darkly compelling Sci Fi tale too. I was fully engaged by this novella, and knowing there are two more to come about sweet, gentle Stuart, and Wid's straight, fiery co conspirator, Joel, and their Travian masters, can't wait to get stuck into their stories!
I was craving a master/slave alien sci-fi sort of story (what? you don't have those kinda moods too?!) so I picked up this book. Unfortunately, it didn't hit the spot for me, and so I must continue searching. 😔
Some of my thoughts: ➛ Awkward conversations: honestly, I cringed almost every time the two leads (Wid 'n Kell) talk to each other. ➛ Lackluster world-building: I'm not even sure what the aliens really look like. ➛ Juvenile plot: I am... not sold on the storyline. It doesn't feel realistic. ➛ Sex: there was a lot of sex, it was all right. ➛ Relationship: perhaps this is the worst part about this book for me. The alien lead has a wife and children back at home that he absolutely loves. o_o
I just finished this book and almost forgot the whole thing. Actually, if you quiz me now; I'd have no idea if Wid is the alien and Kell is the human or if it's the other way. 🥴
Overall book rating: 3.8 Audio Book: N/A Book Cover: 3.5
I never put great expectations into these types of stories.
Reasons being that my idea of being taken prisoner by an alien, seems to differ from that of the greater norm.
Also, if I read one more alien mpreg where the ‘human-male’ diverts to female hysteria during ‘child-birth’ I swear I will not be responsible for my actions. (ps. This is not an mpreg. I just had to add that – lingering frustration and all that jazz)
Therefore the one and ONLY reason I even tried this one, is because of dear Jo*Smut-Dickted* - And I quite “Finally - a capture/slave that is not mushy sweet with insta-love on the part of the captured.”
Exactly my realistic and deliciously dark kind of thing. (Not that this is that dark either)
Yes! There is non-con! He got taken prisoner by an ALIEN people! Not a mushy little thing who cuddles, but a bigger stronger warrior race that does not comply to “human” standards or morals. Hint – Non-Human-Alien-spesies.
It’s not all romantic and all over the place with the Alien now suddenly falling over his feet to make amends for the human boy's predicament. It is what it is.
Captor and Master.
What makes it special is that even though it’s not all romance, there are deeper feelings. Again. Realistic, in my humble opinion.
In light of the author being brave enough to actually try a little realism I am so excited that I might even throw in an extra star.
I would have loved a little more, but I’m banking on there being “more” mentioned in upcoming books. Delightful little read this one.
Finally - a capture/slave that is not mushy sweet with insta-love on the part of the captured. I most enjoyed here the very fallible characters. They each had misconceptions that did not magically disappear but instead shifted over time due to experience (the way most of us change!). Kell and Wid were completely engaging as a couple but, though there were romantic elements at times, this is not a romance. It's more a story of acceptance and understanding what you want, where you are, and the choices you make given those circumstances with how you want to live your life. There is rape but it's not terribly explicit and it is appropriate to the story. This is a gradient story - where things exist on a spectrum that shifts rather then black and white. It actually is very much how I would imaging things might go. Misunderstandings but an openness to change ideas rather than stay dogmatically with one thought - even if things cannot always materialize in the real world. There was give and take but also elements of fait accompli and not being able to change things even if you want them to change. The ending relationship does not end neatly with a duo - and that's appropriate because this feels more like real world. Odd that. To think a SciFi resembles more closely real world then other current day fiction stories. I actually bought Wid and friends had a life that might lead them to accept things that maybe others wouldn't. Relatively speaking where they ended up in some ways is better then where they were. There you have it.
4 Stars because I wanted a bit more grit. I think there was a wee bit too much under the surface here. The emotional impact, for example, of us being able to hear or see what happened to Stuart or Wid towards the end (no spoiler) would have packed a far greater punch then just knowing. Though I really liked both characters there was still some distance for me - that gap could have been closed with the willingness to dive deeper into the (frankly) bad stuff. It might also have been drawn out with a beginning preface or opening chapter or flashback that provided more understanding of the home worlds for both MC's and a little more context there. These would be rec's for me for future stories - this is nearly there and I am eagerly looking forward to #2!
:/ I hated the ending. It's definitely not a HEA, and in my opinion, not even a true HFN, more like a delusional HFN on Wid's part, and a I'm-getting-laid-and-some-companionship-to-help-me-cope-with-how-much-I-miss-my-wife HFN on Kell's part.
The non-con "scent marking" was a bit difficult to get past, but as Wid accepted it so did I. That made it easier to focus on the story, the world-building and characterization. I loved the science fiction aspects and thought those really well-done (from the alien social structure to the healing liquid); I just wished there was a little more toward the characterization.
I guess I was hoping to learn more of how Wid accepts his place as "pet" in Travian society, and - if they ever do return to the Travian homeworld - then how Kell's wife dictates the situation & relationship...because it's obvious Wid loves Kell. Whether it's returned is harder to discern; it appears there is affection, but even with that short holo-visit scene the reader can see that Kell actually loves his wife and children. I really do hope to see how that all plays out in a future installment. Given each subsequent book seems to focus on another Human/Travian pairing, I'm not certain how that would work...
Considering that Joel is Firth's pet at the end of this one, and he's paired with a different Travian in the next, I'm definitely intrigued enough to continue with the series.
Rabble rousing resulting in rape is not what Wid thought would happen when he decided to rile up the invading alien oppressors. Wid regrets not listening to his mother when she warned him that his friend Joel was a bad influence. When Wid is taken by the aliens and not executed, he thinks he may be safe. His punishment for his behaviour may end up be worse than if he were executed.
This space opera is a quick and easy read. Ms. Cayto is new to me and her writing is right up my alley. Her main characters are likeable and her non-con sex is delicious. This world she's created is easy to visualize. The Travian males which are the superior aliens in this world are prime specimens for spank bank fodder. Kell as the captain and alpha male is definitely sexy. Kell is a character who wants to do the right thing. His societal norms dictate his behaviour yet he still sticks to a morale code he will not cross. This makes him admirable. Wid is a funny character for me. He's a cross between a good ole farm boy hick and protective sheep dog. The way the two characters interact is amusing because it is clear they don't understand each other even though they can speak the same language. The conflict between the two is well written from a prisoner of war perspective as well as an officer following orders.
The action in this story helps keep the story moving. The conflict is well done and makes the relationship between Kell and Wid gel better. What really is lovely about this story, is the rape. Yes, I said it. The scenes where Kell forces himself upon Wid are arousing and enjoyable for dark erotica readers. It's just the right amount of graphic description paired with human emotion. It isn't sadistically cruel which is why it isn't blazing hot erotica. The non-con turning to dub-con lessens the erotic heat and increases the romantic index. Turning Wid into a sexual pet complete with collar and leash definitely tripped my trigger. Whilst it may be a bit humiliating for Wid, there are no degrading scenes. Ms. Cayto does a lovely job of balancing between arousing non-con and humiliating sex object.
Since this is the first in the series, a reader can only hope the next books are published in the near future. The exposure to this matriarchal alien world is only the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully there is more shared in the next book about this alien world and their High Council. It will be interesting to see if the next story will include more non-con sex toy slavery. A reader can only hope. This space-opera is recommended to m/m readers who enjoy enemy to lovers themes.
Finally! Finally finished this book. Yup, somehow I got bored with it at some point. Took me eight freaking months to finish it. Not that it was a badly written book but it does drag in places though.
Didn't feel the connection or attraction between the protagonist and his master. Feels like just lots of rough sex aka rapes and then suddenly he is all okay with it and even wants more of it. Don't get me wrong. I am so NOT not complaining about the rough sexing cos hell as I am all for it!
Perhaps it's the emotional transition from an unwilling sex slave to a cherished pet that was not handled very well here. Or, I just wanted him to resist more so I get to see more of his helplessness and despairs. Soaking up all his pain and suffering like a dry and thirsty sponge. Yeah, I get kicks out of stuff like this. “ψ(`∇´)ψ
One more thing to note - If you're a sucker for forced seduction that automatically comes with romance, this book wouldn't cut it. From the erotica perspective, I find the most enjoyable parts are the rough sex and the degradation of the sex pets. Gosh how I adored the leashes and collars. Too bad they didn't make the pets crawl on all fours.

P/S: I actually had to type this review on my mobile phone. So please pardon the typos and shits. Thank you.
As other reviewers mentioned before, this is definitely not a traditional romance. I’m not even sure if we could call this a romance.
Please keep in mind this book is filled with noncon scenes, some violent. The humans are literally “pets”, but in reality they’re s*x slaves. So if that’s not your cup of tea, you should skip this series altogether.
I knew all of this going in, and I decided to read it anyway. I did enjoy the story and had fun with it, although I’m not exactly happy with the HFN ending, I wish we’d gotten a more fleshed out ending, even if it wasn’t a traditional romance ending. Oh well, this was still fun to read for me, I may continue the series if the mood strikes.

I wish we’d gotten a true HEA. We don’t know if they’ll be together when the alien gets back to his planet, or if the human will choose to go back to the humans? The ending of this is a true definition of HFN. “For now, it was enough to be the captain’s pet.” 🥲

I usually love books by Samantha Cayto, but this book was just ok. I don’t know, I just couldn’t love Wid. I just never really connected with him. I also didn’t like the culture Kell came from and couldn’t relate to them long term. Anyway, I didn’t hate it but since I had to buy it I didn’t think it was worth the money.
There are many reasons that I enjoy science fiction, but the biggest is the creativity each author brings to their world building. Samantha Cayto is a new-to-me author, so I was far more curious about what this first book in her 'Alien Slave Masters' series was going to bring me. I certainly love aliens and I was intrigued about the Travians and their customs, and how each of these main characters might deal with learning about each other.
There are few things that bring me as much happiness as watching the strength and resolve of the human spirit. These boys who were caught vandalizing Travian buildings and were sent to be the sex slaves of the senior officers of a patrolling ship, didn't give up. They fought back even though some of them endured a lot of physical retribution, and all of them were raped, but they continued to try to figure out a way out.
Wid was chosen by Kell, the captain, and even though Wid is bisexual, the Travian stands over seven feet tall and his penis is very large, causing Wid considerable pain those first few nights. Wid then decides it might work better if he attempts to seduce his captor in order to gain information, no matter that his body is betraying him by beginning to enjoy his times with Kell. Kell is an honorable Travian, and regardless of how much he desires his pet, he truly doesn't enjoy taking him by force. But they've been in space a long time, and his mate is on their home world, along with her children. Travian's are a matriarchal society and the women rule. They make all the decisions, the children belong to them, and the men are warriors and obey the commands given to them.
Months of being together bring a type of contentment to both Wid and Kell, particularly after nights of talking and sharing information about their cultures. Of course, Wid and the other young men are still secretly exploring the ship through the vent system, in hopes of being able to escape. When Wid makes a mistake and is found outside the humans’ daily recreation area, it allows Garen, the first officer, to do what he's wanted for a long time. He relieves Kell of his command and takes charge of the ship.
I very much enjoyed this novella. I really liked the fact that the author didn't try to imbue Kell with human attributes as the book neared the end. The author gave this story a very realistic ending, better, in my opinion, than the romantic Happy Ever After she could have given it. Overall an extremely entertaining read that has me eager for the next in the series.
Surprisingly the reason I DNF’d this book had nothing to do with the rape and torture of the “pets” and everything to do with that fact that as far as I can tell Wid will always just be a pet... nothing more.
How messed up are those ethics for you???
Our Captain already has a female mate, one he apparently loves/misses, and although their society let the males have other male lovers/pets I highly doubt that will turn this story into some epic romance where love prevails all traumas. It’s more along the lines were I see us being left empty and wanting in the end.
So... I’m officially not interested.
If I am wrong on that assumption please let me know, I would gladly finish the story.
Diving in with eyes wide-open, I wouldn't count this as HEA or even HFN, considering... Perhaps rather "realistic" from human expectation kind of way; which didn't sound too promising. At least to me.
The blurb is exactly what the story delivered with plenty of graphic non-Con sex scenes thrown in. Some of them were hilariously icky, but this worked as passable reading. Well, during the time I need some not-to-think-too-much diversion. :)
The Captain’s Pet had some good world building around the main plot that kept things interesting, but heed the reader advisory: much, if not all the sex in the book would be considered non-con or dub-con. Let’s be honest – the humans are raped for most of the book. However, the on page stuff is not graphic or cruel (I wince as I type that, because what is rape, if not cruel) but it is plain from the start that Kell bares Wid no malice.
It is the fact that it is plain Kell is conflicted over his new pet that allows for the romance of the book to exist. However, Travian society is much different than Human society. Females rule and Kell has a mate that he adores and loves. They think humans are weak and not as intelligent. As such, I don’t really know that Kell can care for Wid as anything more than a pet, and that left me feeling conflicted in the end. As this is a series, I hope some of the misgivings I have are addressed in the next book and their relationship can develop more.
That aside, I really enjoyed Wid’s personality and his strength that shown through in his difficult situation. I liked that the humans had backbones and stood up to their captors. I also liked Kell and his honour. I liked that he insisted the humans were to be treated well.
I think I will read the next book when it comes out, just to see how the relationship progresses as it ends on a very positive development that intrigues me.
I received a copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads
4 Alien Stars
The Captain's Pet is dual-perspective science-fiction, erotic novel between the Captain and his pet.
Humans fled Earth when it became overpopulated and unable to sustain all life. They found an uninhabited planet that could support human lives, only later to be taken over by the aliens who called this planet theirs. This is about as much of the worldbuilding as you're going to get, but it set the novel's pacing, and gave the reader enough to understand. After all, this is erotica, where physical action between characters is the focus, so I'm judging by its peers. I felt there was a good amount of worldbuilding for what it was.
Wid was a naughty human, along with a dozen others, doing small things like vandalism. The young women were let go, but the men were captured and taken to the aliens for punishment. Said punishment was to become the not-so pampered pets of their captors.
The pacing was quick, the science-fiction was easy to understand, the story was fluid. Wid and Kell were both 'good' characters in impossible situations, and the readers could sympathize with their plight. The side characters were interesting enough to want more of their stories.
Just note: this is a series, so not all threads were resolved by book's end, most likely to sustain the plot in future books.
Beware: there are many elements that will not sit well with some. There is violence, repeated force, sometimes mixed with violence. All of what makes this novel erotic was not romantic nor with consent. So if you're uncomfortable with that, you've been warned.
Will I read more by this author? Yes, I'm awaiting the ARC for book #2.
I'd like to read an 'abducted by aliens and turned into a sex toy' fic where the humans don't fall in lust and decide the aliens are pretty great guys after all despite their raping, master race, oppressive behavior. This started off with promise - the aliens weren't looking for soul mates or 'forced' into rape to save their species. They're military aggressors who view humans as lesser beings. The abducted boys don't fall into immediate submissive lust and just want to escape.
Of course, by the end, at least one boy (the hero!) decides he's got it good because his owner is 'honorable' (not) and gives him lots of orgasms.
I got sucked in by the sample chapter which held out the promise of maybe evading the trope. Disappointing that it didn't. However, I'll give it two stars instead of one because the mechanics of writing are decent.
This is not going to be for the faint at heart. Brutal violence that consists of rape. Perhaps a form of stockholm but Wid, once he stops fighting the captain who seems to be the least brutal described, starts to gain pleasure from the forced sex. Captain in the meantime trys to give pleasure while taking. Wid develops feelings for his alien.
So, if not for the forced painful rape of these 'boys' I would have no problem with feelings being developed. Or even if things got a bit carried away with a little roughness. But flat out rape.. Frankly I'm not really sure what prompted me to continue reading and to finish it. Overall, if the sex wasn't an issue I'd say not too bad.. as it is I'm not really sure how to rate this..
I enjoy reading science fiction and nothing is more yummy than a good alien. I’m always stunned when other readers expect the aliens to have the same sensibilities, morals, and rules we have. That being said. This worked for me. Earthers have populated a planet that may belong to another race. Instead of relocating they choose to fight. For the good and the bad, it’s doing what is natural to themselves was the guiding force in this book. I hope Samantha Cayto is faithful to the concepts she’s now created in the rest of the series. My fingers are crossed.
I bought this way back when and read it to get it off my TBR list. Putting aside the brutal beginning, I just don't think that there was enough interaction between Wid and Kell to justify Wid supposedly falling in love with him.
I feel like this one could have been so much better. Wid pretty much has Stockholm as he is admitting love but they never really interacted to get to know each other or form an attachment only the physical and that Kell was better than the alternative. I can handle the non con and dub con if there is the payoff of a HEA at the end, but Wid was never going to be anything more than Kell’s pet, Kell had a mate and kids that he loved back on his planet so I never saw any future for them.
This is a Sci-Fi novel involving an Earth colony taken over by an alien race, known as the Travians. Some of the local young men commit a bit of vandalism on the alien’s quarters, are captured, and taken to the alien battleship, where they are used as sex slaves. By a totally improbable breach of reality, the Tavians are basically human, and even have the same anatomical characteristics as humans do. They could pass for human, if they weren’t seven feet or more tall.
This story is mostly a long erotic romp of rape, sometimes with pleasured mixed in. There’s really nothing more to be said, other than that the principal captive, Wid, begins to have feelings for the ship’s captain, whose personal pet he is; and he eventually learns that the feelings are reciprocated to one degree or another.
The front matter of the book gives credit to two editors who I need to ask what standard reference they use. Is it Merriam-Webster? If they were, they’d have known that redheaded is one word rather than two words. Or were they using Oxford Dictionary, where I found red headed to be, in fact, two words. However, the use of the word 'clothes' rather than 'cloths,' which is plural for a bunch of cloths used for drying made me wonder.
Then there’s the matter of the bad dialogue tags. The characters in this book don’t ‘say’ things when they talk to each other. Oh, no, they spat out; vowed; wailed; conceded; snorted; exclaimed; cried out; panted out; scoffed; (the list is endless) at each other for 120 pages. Using non-standard, and oftentimes invalid dialogue tags is the hallmark of a lazy author, one who has little or no respect for either their readers, or their craft.
The only thing that keeps the reader willing so continue slogging through the terribly written dialogue is the hope that more and better sex might be on the next page. But even that gets tiresome after a while. When the sex is so repetitive that it ceases to cause an appropriate physiological response in the male reader, it’s time to quit.
Four points for a halfway-decently erotic story; two points for bad writing and editing; average score therefore is three. So three very reluctant stars for this book.
This review may contain spoilers. Also the Reader Advisory is very real and very serious. So if rape is a trigger please don’t read this book.
Wid is a twenty year old human male living on an Earth colony with his family. Things were rough but the humans were making the new world work. Until the Travians came and claimed that the once uninhabited world belonged to the.
I’m not going to lie. This book starts out as straight up rape. Then moves to dubious-consent. At no point is there really a part where Wid is completely on board with everything. At least I don’t think so.
I felt bad for Wid and the situation he got himself into. For being a stupid boy he was forced into the life of a sex slave. No matter what feeling developed between him and Kell, he will always be considered a sex slave. Even as Wid comes to enjoy the forced sex, I still felt skived out a bit. When Wid started to fall for Kell, I really didn’t know what to think.
I was not very impressed with Kell. He called Wid an “it” for a good portion, besides the raping deal. The Travians are a matriarchal society, so the women are in charge and the men are the military. Kell has a female mate that he loves and misses. However in their world men are allowed to have male sex partners, or pets. He only raped Wid in the start to make sure his scent was marking him, and to keep his stature at receiving such a gift as a human pet.
Even through an almost mild emotional bond forms between Kell and Wid, there is never going to really be more. So this left me at loose ends. I read through all the rape scenes, Wid being lashed like an animal, the descriptions of what the other humans went through, and all to be left feeling let down.
I want a happy ending with my stories, and this gives maybe a happy for now deal. As this is billed as a series, I am really hoping for more in the next book.
After reading several full length romance novels in a row I was looking for something quick and dirty for my next read. The Captain’s Pet by Samantha Cayto worked perfectly with that in mind. This erotic futuristic sci fi takes readers to a faraway planet in that humans have fled to when Earth has reached its limits on sustaining life. Humans have attempted to colonize New World Colony Seven. The attempt is being halted by the Travian’s claiming that Barantho actually belongs to them. The Travian’s simply want the invaders to vacate their planet.
There are varying sides to how the humans and Travian’s end up together. The human young men were caught vandalizing one of the occupying forces buildings. They are captured by the Travian security force and thus punished. The High Command has gifted their soldiers with human pets. While the humans are used to punishment being handed down in a very different manner, the Travian’s cannot insult High Command by denying their gifts.
Kell and Wid are the main couple of this installment of the Alien Slave Masters series. Kell is captain of the Travian vessel. He has a certain image to uphold. The human pet that is Wid is initially seen as an inconvenience that is added to his many duties. Wid just wants to go home to his family. He soon sees that less brutality for him and the other pets is something they are all willing to quickly settle for. Not knowing how long the punishment will last the human captives band together to help each other in all ways possible. There is a strong them vs us camaraderie among the human captives.
Readers should note that this is not your typical erotic sci fi romance. Kell and Wid’s couplings go from rape, to dubious consent, to seduction for means to an end, to completely consentual. There is plenty of violence to go around for all. All of this takes them to a world specific quasi happy place. It all works together for this very specific world. While oftentimes it’s not pretty it all flows with the story being presented.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book or if I would have the stomach for it. It turned out to be a good book, but it does push the envelope.
When the Travians invade and take control of an Earth colony, a group of teenagers (possibly late teens, 18, 19-ish) decide to vandalize the aliens’ installation. Rather than kill them, they are taken hostage and given to Travian military personnel to use as sex slaves. Commander Kell doesn’t really want a sex slave but can’t refuse a gift from high command so he and his officers brutally rape their captives (One officer beats his slave half to death) to mark them with their scent. This was not consensual sex, it was forcible rape and the story makes no bones about it being anything else. During day while the officers work, the boys are led on a leash to a day care center of sorts, where they’re locked in. The room has a pool with magic water that heals the injuries inflicted on them the night before (so that they can be beaten and raped again).
Wid, the hero, is given to Commander Kell. As Wid stops resisting, Kell treats him more kindly, and over time they develop feelings for each other, and Kell begins to sympathize with his captor and “master.” (Can you say Stockholm Syndrome?).
I wouldn’t call this BDSM, because it is not a consensual power exchange, but brutal violence committed against helpless captives.
What saved this book for me was that it was well written, and the author made a point of motivating the characters so that the reader could understand why the characters did what they did. I believe this book is marketed as erotica. I certainly wouldn’t call it a romance, but it is a compelling story.
The Captain’s Pet will not appeal to many readers, so choose carefully. If you’ve ever been the victim of a sexual assault, you should pass on this one.
The Captain’s Pet is a fast-paced space romp that introduces the reader to an intriguing alien society and a group of plucky humans living in the darkest reaches of space. But a weak plot and multiple scenes of non-con left me underwhelmed and even angry.
The Travians are a race of physically powerful aliens that have taken umbrage to the human colonization of a planet in their territory. Thiers is a matriarchal society where the women rule and the men serve as warriors. Women are treated with the upmost respect (males routinely bow to them, even their mates and daughters) and they can choose their mates at will and have absolute authority over the children. I appreciated the author providing a unique twist on the alien trope and doing so in a way that read as natural and never ridiculous or out of place. Plus its always nice to see women get their due in the power department, even in a fictional setting.
Quite happy with sex-in-space-with-aliens, but this pushed me slightly to the edge of "ugh" because of the amount of non-con sex.
Okaaay...it's part of their lifestyle that 'pets' are taken and used by the aliens 'defending' their air-space; and I realise that Kell is unhappy with the situation anyway. But having owned that Kell is reluctant, why the f**k did he f**k Wid anyway??
Slightly too much to handle, so stay clear if you dislike non-con or even dub-con sex.
The story is obvious once one realises the humans who want to escape at all costs, and that Wid, who has been picked as a sex-toy for the Captain, Kell, are all on a losing wicket. A mutiny nearly costs Kell his spaceship, but there's not much sympathy to be found...
Stupidly, bringing in a Matriarchal society, does not really allow me to excuse what happens to Wid and the rest of the humans on board Kell's ship.
