Ryan Wiley serves up a mystery laced with current technology in Deep Web . The book starts with a bang (no pun intended!) as Greg's twin sister, Jessica, is fatally shot in an apparent drive by without motive, a few blocks from his apartment. After a few weeks of shock, Greg becomes frustrated with the lack of results and/or action from the police department and decides to take matters into his own amateur hands. Bent on investigating the details of the crime scene as well as his sister's life, Greg (with help from his friend) stumbles into an online realm known as the deep web (hence the name of the book). These shady websites can't be reached by google or yahoo and peddle everything from drugs to hitman services...and turns out this is how Jessica met her end. No spoiler alert b/c all this information is featured in a blurb on the back of the book. Anywho, the rest of the novel basically consists of Greg stumbling his way towards the truth as well as meeting/dating a girl named Stacy. Here's a few of my thoughts about the novel.

* It takes place in Columbus Ohio, and I'm a Buckeyes alumni, so rock on!
*The writing in the book is possibly more amateurish than Greg's detective skills...so take a few Advil before starting the book and be prepared to scratch your head a lot.
*Speaking of Greg, he's a highly inconsistent character. He has an extremely righteous view about marijuana (convinced that taking one hit will result in his going to jail, and he Just Can't Believe how irresponsible his friends are for indulging in a joint).....BUT he'll hire hackers to crack into other people's e-mail accounts, he'll taunt killers online, and he's going to go on a vindictive rampage of revenge? Just odd.
*I have a tiny theory that Wiley is obsessed with pornography and/or strippers as one of the two subjects is featured in almost every chapter.
*Most of the story line is improbable, the dialogue is some of the worst I've read in years, I alternatively laughed/cringed at the ridiculous "romance" brewing between Greg and Stacy, and don't even get me started on the character of Shane.

Bottom line: Independent media of any kind (be it music, film, or books) is desperately needed in our glossy, highly manufactured world, and I have great respect for the writers/producers/artists who enrich our lives with their imaginative craft (sometimes at little to no personal gain). BUT, there is little imagination or craft in this little book. Pick it up for free if you must, but please don't waste your hard earned cash on it. Given 0 stars or a rating of "horrible". Sorry Mr. Wiley. I wanted to like it, I really did....but I just can't.

I vote for it when they nominate the book at Kindle Scout. Eventhough it may not what the author want, I truly believe that this is blessing in disguise. The story is good eventhough a little unrealistic. But I love the premise and it was refreshing to see the antagonist who haven't had any connection with the protagonist. It could have been better but good enough to warrant 4 stars from me. Anyway cannot wait to read the next book from Mr Willey

I was just looking through some of the books I had on the Kindle app & seen that I had this one, but wasn't really ready to read it since I just started another book, but figured I would just read a chapter or 2 & by golly I couldn't stop reading it.
Really fast paced which really surprised me on ordered the kill.
Will be following this author to see what he comes up with next.

For anyone who likes a story that you can't just put down this book is for you. A loving brother finds his twin sister murdered for no apparent reason. frustrated that the local police seem too busy to investigate, he takes it upon himself to investigate the crime and is soon tangled in the deep web.

Rather simplistic and predictable

Writer must have actually used Tor at least once unlike so many others who try to incorporate technology in their stories when they have absolutely no understanding of it, much like politicians writing and passing laws regarding the same topic.

The storyline itself is quite predictable with no major surprises.

A good read.

The characters as well as the flow of the story itself, keep your interest and make you want to read until the end in hopes that poor Greg gets closure and hopefully, possibly revenge. Simply put, a very good read!

Well...

I liked the unusual story line but not all the deep web background. Just give me the action. In almost stopped reading in the middle as I grew bored. But i did finish which gives this book a 3.

A good read. A brother investigating his sisters murder finds a darker side to the internet. Story line was good and different to usual murder stories. Worth a read
