So it's been a hot minute since I spent time with the characters in Beaver County, and I forgot (not really) about the addictive nature of this series. I sat down to read a couple chapters and found myself at the epilog before I knew it, so plan your time!
This surprised single dad hockey storyline has everything we love about this author's works, and it is full of emotions.
I appreciated the ways this event changed Jonah's direction and how he stepped up. Zoe is everything we want her to be, for both Eli and Jonah, but also they're everything she needs.
I laughed at the ridiculously clueless things Jonah didn't know, got teary at the battle over Eli, and very much enjoyed the steamy chemistry and sizzling scenes between this couple. I love connecting with a story like that, and really enjoyed the read.
(Oh, and I absolutely wanted to slap Gwen... you'll see, and you will too. *wink*)
I absolutely recommend reading in order for the best experience, but you can begin here if needed, and go back for more.

Second chance, witty and poignant romance
At about the same time that Jonah finds out he is a father of a 9yo boy, Zoe is getting unjustly fired from her Assistant Producer position at the local TV station. Jonah Holt is 30yo and had no idea that Rosie his first love who left him ten years before had been pregnant with his baby. Jonah is now a defenseman with the Boise Trout; new position because he used to be the star center with the Blizzards. (There is a story there too.) He is lousy as a defenseman, his mind is too preoccupied with life and he does not even know yet about Eli, his 9yo. Rosie was killed in an accident and in her will requested that Eli be raised by his father, Jonah. He needs help, like now! Zoe was fired because she would not stoop to hurting Jonah; she goes to him to tell him what is about to happen. They pull off the perfect counter-measure and Jonah asks Zoe to come be Eli’s nanny until she gets another job in TV. She agrees.
Be prepared for many touching moments as Jonah and Zoe try to help this sweet and highly intelligent little boy grieve for his mother but move on and accept his new life. I cannot remember the last time that I cried so much while reading a rom-com! There will be humor and steam along with wonderful secondary characters except for one you will learn to hate. All in all, I loved this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Booksprout. Now, I am so looking forward to the next one.

This book was incredibly quick to grab your attention. She didn’t waste any time getting to the nitty gritty when Eli arrives in chapter one. You pretty much instantly fall in love with Jonah and Zoe (the spice, the tension, the humor!!) but the real one you’re hoping gets a happily ever after is Eli ⚡️ I loved this little guy, and how the three of them became a family, the most. It was a roller coaster of emotions as Jonah and Eli figured out how to have a father/son relationship, with Zoe holding space to be each of their safe places.
I absolutely intend to go back read the other two books in the series!

I was lucky enough to get to red this as an arc and to be honest the hockey part of the story pulled me in, but Johan and Eli the love he has for his son after finding out 9 years later about him pulled me the rest of the way in and pulled at my heart strings!! I laughed, cried and went straight to add the rest of her books to my tbr

I got this through the author via BookSirens from reading the first in the series.
This had so much emotion and everything and I loved it.
I do wish there was more to Rosie's back story and why life with Gwen was terrible but, even without it, it was enough.
Best friends brother, long time crush, forced proximity, hot spice. It was all there.
I love this little town Weiss has created in the snowy mountains and I can't wait for more!

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. There are lots of single dads being given babies they’ve fathered, but not many older children.
Jonah is a struggling NHL player who recently transferred to Trout and isn’t dealing with this well.
Enter Eli, a child who has recently lost his mother, Rosie, who broke Jonah’s heart when she left him 10 years ago. Despite not telling Jonah he was a father, she named him as guardian in her will.
Zoe is his sister's best friend, and she is told Jonah has been escorted to the police station. Sensing a story for her news station, she finds that Jonah is meeting a small child. On hearing the story, she leaves and tells her boss and the news reader that there is no story. Unfortunately, the newsreader and her boss have an insider who says they are going to publish the story without the full information, and they don't care. Arguing with them, saying they need to interview Jonah, they disagree, and she ends up fired.
Her podcast releases Jonah's interview and agrees to nanny for him. When he gets temporary custody of Eli, there is a lot of emotional trauma that is treated with empathy in the writing.
Rosie's mother petitions for custody of Eli, Jonah and Zoe have to fight, especially when Eli is picked up from school by his grandmother. When Jonah goes to her house, he says things that will have consequences.
Zoe gets offered he dream job and leaves, getting her sister to nanny. Jonah is spending nearly all his time at the rink while waiting to get Eli back, as his grandmother has a temporary custody order.
His family lawyer finds all sorts of interesting information on Eli's grandmother, and Zoe acts as a character witness.
After a triumphant hockey match, they soon get their HEA

I LOVE Terra’s Beaver County series. I’ve had the absolute joy of ARC reading since the beginning of the series, and each one hits as a different interconnected story.
I adored the complex characters, and the difficult situations they each found themselves in. And Eli, sweet sweet boy. He has a tender loving heart, and such a big brain - i adored meeting him. Eli, Jonah’s long lost son wasn’t a side character, but a core part of the story, and the family dynamic built in the book. It was beautifully done.
The chemistry, and emotional build up of Jonah and Zoe’s story was perfect. (Although i did want to smack both of them silly at one point!) I loved how Jonah showed up for Zoe, both quietly and loudly. I loved how Zoe showed up for both of the boys. A big part of relationships is showing up, even when it’s hard. Even when you gain nothing, but the knowledge that you were there. Their relationship, and family dynamic had that in spades.
If you aren’t new to the series, you’ll also see several characters from the past (including the BEAVERS!)

Jonah is jumping many life hurdles that seem to come from all sides. In college he was a NHL candidate, but was in a deep relationship with a girl named Rosie. She made the decision for him and vanished, ghosting him completely. He played one position and wound up not only being traded to his home town team, but on a totally different position. Struggling to reach success seems difficult. One day an officer of children's services strolls up to him with a nine year old boy. His mom was killed in an accident and her wish was to bring him to his father. "Father?" He looks down at the boy who, buy the way exactly like Jonah.
Zoe is best friends with Jonah's sister since childhood. Hanging at the police department to get a scoop, she witnesses the arrival of Eli, Jonah's son. Being assistant station manager she knows she should report on this. She decides that the story can hold a few days until Jonah and Eli get settled in. No such luck! Word gets back to the manager and she is given a choice, Tell all or be fired. She took the later.

I was absolutely locked in to this book and demolished it in one sitting. I couldn’t bring myself to put it down. This story had me going through so many emotions while reading it. I raged. I swooned. I laughed. I fell in love. I honestly enjoyed reading this book a lot more than I thought I would originally. Jonah and Zoe were amazing together. Their connection is so genuine feeling and has a solid foundation to it. These two support each other, and Eli, the best that they can, continually showing up for each other. Their bond is much more than attraction or chemistry. Now that’s not to say that the chemistry is lacking. The chemistry they share is off the charts and it’s a real inferno. The push and pull made the payout from it all mean that much more. Jonah and Zoe building things between them was so heartwarming. Watching Jonah interact with Eli was both heartbreaking and endearing. Their developing relationship definitely had its up and downs. There were moments of animosity, of breakthroughs, of healing, and of love. And through out all I was cheering for them to connect and be okay together. The ending we got truly felt well earning and so deserved. Jonah and Zoe, and Eli, went through a lot in this book. And it felt so satisfying for things to wrap up the way they did.

This was such a cute hockey romance! Although it’s part of a series, it works well as a standalone. Cut Off is about so much more than hockey. It’s about family, found family, love, and careers. The banter in this story kept me hooked the entire way through.
Jonah unexpectedly finds out he has a 9 year old son who is placed in his care after a tragedy. He struggles to balance his demanding career with his son Eli, who is upset and confused after losing his mom. Jonah turns to his sister’s friend Zoe for help. Eli and Zoe bond almost immediately, so Jonah hires Zoe temporarily to be his live-in nanny. It doesn’t take long for sparks to fly between the hot couple.
The way Jonah and Zoe come together to help Eli adjust with his new reality is so touching. There are so many moments that really moved me. Recommend for fans of sport romances and those who enjoy a feel-good story.

For those of you who even kind of like sports romance this is for you! If you are an avid sports romance reader… You do NOT want to miss this book!! Throughout this book, I smiled, laughed out loud, and cried both sad and happy tears!
Jonah is struggling with his new NHL team when his life gets flipped upside down by finding out he has a 9 y/o kid, Eli. In walks his sister’s best friend, Zoe who is also a news producer. As we all know athletes don’t always get along with people who want to know every detail o their lives for ratings. Zoe is not like that all, just FYI. Eli immediately connects with Zoe more so than his own father. When Zoe becomes Eli’s nanny, obviously tension starts to rise in the best way possible. They all struggle in their own ways and try to be there to support each other.

This is such a sweet story! It's got all the sweets: the hockey player who tames his anger issues, the son he didn't know about who softens his rough edges, and the love interest who fits it all together in spite of herself. Yeah, there's love interest that may or may not work out, but the real heart of the book is Eli, a pint-sized gallon of love. There are challenges. Lord are there challenges, but that:s what makes the book worth reading.
There are enough hints at the character histories to make them well developed. They make sense in their context. I've driven between Seattle and Boise, Pocatello actually, so I know the drive is a slog and harder than the book implies. The plot and characters are perfect in the context.

Jonah was running out of options, he had 25 minutes to prepare himself for parenthood. And he was lucky to have Zoe in his corner. When life comes at you fast.
Books by Terra Weiss are addictive and you feel happy to have them. It was my 5th and definitely not the last one.
And I love the magic of series - the chance to get to know many characters, local community, friendships and neighbourhood. You feel involved and so much engaged in stories then.
Beautiful characters, well written story, with lots of lines going on - custody battles, hockey, Zoe’s work etc. But if you want something sweet and memorable - Eli and beavers then.
The story was everything - sweet and funny, heartwarming and emotional.

TLDR; hockey player doesn’t know he’s a father and is suddenly raising a grieving preteen. He calls in the help of an old almost flame and you’ve got the makings of a steamy rom-com.
Cut Off is part of the Beaver County world, but can be read as a stand alone. I have not read the other Beaver County books (yet!) but I did not feel lost at all.
Cut Off was a good time read, and I can’t wait to read more from Terra Weiss in the future.

The way Terra Weiss writes and the description of the characters and their feelings towards each other just absolutely suck me in! I immediately got wrapped up into Jonah's current situation and getting told about Eli. It's always so touching and amazing to read a dad stepping up!
And then here comes Zoe helping make things so much easier on him - helping where she can with Eli and in turn FALLING FOR Jonah, of course.
The hits for Jonah just keep on coming and I found myself so mad and frustrated for him.
I would highly recommend this book - this entire series really. The plot in all of the books are amazing and the spice is spot on.

I would highly recommend this book - this entire series really. The plot in all of the books are amazing and the spice is spot on.

Thank you so much Terra for trusting me with this ARC! We start from page 1 and automatically are thrown into the world of Beaver County again and the way Terra writes, it’s like you’re reading a rom com with the vibes of a TV show like Hart of Dixie.
This book was so much more than just about a sports romance. It’s about grief, trying to be the best parent you can be, dealing with the unexpected, and finding your special place in someone’s life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolute Perfection!
I am officially obsessed! Terra Weiss completely outdone herself with Cut Off. If you love hockey romance, a top tier single dad trope, and characters that make you laugh out loud while totally melting your heart, you need to read this immediately.
The chemistry is incredible, the witty banter is top notch, and it has just the right amount of slowburn tension to keep you flipping pages late into the night. It's sweet, funny, and has so much heart. A definitive 5 stars!

Jonah lost his position on his team due to a new player. So he swapped teams to play with his best friend but jokes on him it’s the same position he was being pushed to before. And he somehow sucks at it right now. Then he finds out his childhood girlfriend who left without saying anything 10 years ago actually had his son. Zoe ends up needing a job and becomes Jonah’s nanny to help with his custody case. I knew this book was going to be fantastic as I’ve read the other ones in this series but I absolutely could not put it down. Stayed up way too late because I just had to finish it. 100/10 for me.

A fun story:
I was instantly drawn into the drama and liked the emotional depth that infused the story. It really touched my heart watching Jonah navigate unexpected fatherhood and young Eli open up and trust again after all his loss. Jonah and Zoe made a cute couple and I was rooting for them all the way.
Whilst part of a series, this book could nevertheless be read as a standalone. The only thing that detracted from my reading enjoyment was that further editing is required to tighten the timeline and correction inconsistencies and discrepancies.

Just by reading the description of what the book is about i knew that I was going to love Eli, Jonah's son so much and I was so right. The relationship that Jonah trys and accomplishes between him and Eli is so heartwarming and sweet. I love Jonahs first instincts when he finds out about Eli. This book is a roller-coaster of emotions, I was laughing one moment, then wanting to cry the next. I will totally be reading this book again.

June 16, 2026I have read several of Terra's book now and this one was just as great as the other books I have been able to arc read for. This story I thoroughly enjoyed more as it had to deal with a single parent aspect and finding out you're a dad when the child is much older than a baby. Enter in bests friend's sister who comes to help as well, and everyone gets a HEA. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This was a great read.
After transferring to the Boise Trout hockey team, Jonah Holt is struggling to find his mojo. His world completely tilts when he finds out he has a 9YO son, Eli. Zoe Lane has crushed on Jonah, her best friend's brother, for a few years. When she loses her job because she chose to suppress Jonah's scandal, she ends up being a temporary nanny to Eli. And, so begins the gradual building of relationships between the three of them, but can their connection and trust survive the curveballs thrown at them?
This was a heartwarming, somewhat angsty read, with a good dose of spice thrown in. I loved Zoe! She had such great instincts when it came to Eli. She intervened when she needed to and stepped back when it was required, so Jonah could bond with his son. Jonah was pretty amazing. After the initial shock, there was no question that he wanted Eli and be a father to him. I loved how hard he tried and how he listened to Zoe's advice. My heart hurt for him as he fought for Eli when circumstances threatened to keep them apart. The chemistry between Zoe and Jonah was amazing and addictive. This was a great story and looking forward to more from this author.

It started off with a emotional punch that had me hooked right away. We see Zoey Lane again and her best friends brother, Jonah. The circumstances end up with her fired and him in need of a nanny. The interactions between them and the journey with Eli is so heart felt. The slow burn between Zoey and Jonah until its fast and spicy!

I was not prepared for how beautifully touching and deep this was going to be! I fell in absolute love with these characters and their journey was so special 🥹♥️ I do wonder how the Death Star Lego build is going!! I’m gonna imagine them building it probably every day from now on lol

The plot of this novel and how it develops during the story is nothing really new. Regarding how many romance novels are published during a year, it's not so astonishing when such repetitions occur. So the book has to be judged more for its other qualities for example like writing style or logic.
The MMC Jonah, already loaded with a lot of baggage caused by a change in his professional status, unexpectedly turns out to be a single dad of a nine year old and as such is in dire need of help which he gets from FMC Zoe. And of course there is the usual threat by a not so nice family member of the deceased mother of the child, i.e. someone who tries to get sole custody for the child too.
Really well written are the scenes, showing the inner struggles professional hockey player Jonah has to go through. Having been a successful center player for years suddenly his old club brought a new player into the team, who was given Jonahs previous position. But Jonah didn’t agree with the required change to a defense position within the team. So he has been traded midseason and because at that time usually there are not many free positions for professional and successful players available, he gets only one chance to join a new team, but unfortunately - out of the frying pan and into the fire - his position with the new team is being a defense player.
Zoe has been working for four years as an assistant producer at a local news station and she is a real workhorse: always helping out her colleagues and using her fast thinking and decision making abilities, she hopes to finally get noticed and she is waiting for a long earned promotion. What she gets in this male-dominated department, well, you can guess.
Zoe’s situation isn’t exactly described in a realistic way. There are some exaggerations, which are obviously used to bring some humor into the scenes, but in my opinion they seem a bit overly constructed and therefore artificial. And there is no surprise for the reader knowing rather fast, how Zoe’s professional life will go on.
During the whole novel the author uses different ways to describe situations. Sometimes there are elements of kitschy romance or cliches about the abilities and the age-appropriate behavior of children, sometimes there is also some logic missing, for example: why did Jonah have to ride in the back of the police car to the police station, when he owns a good working car and could haven driven himself? So everything seems a bit mixed up and finally I thought, the storyline was a little too diffuse.

As already mentioned above, the whole novel somehow doesn’t work for me and reminds me of a not so well stitched patchwork rug. The story also contains a lot of side characters, which are sometimes mentioned but make none or only small appearances within this book which is part 3 of a series. I suppose, the author has mentioned some cast from the books before or she planned to give them their own space in one of the following novels of the Beaver County Stories.
I feel a little at lost to rate this novel adequate, but going with my feelings, I suppose three stars are ok so far.

Jonah’s world flips overnight when he finds out he has a son he never knew about and watching him step up as a single dad while struggling on and off the ice was everything. His growth, his heart, you can’t help but root for him and Eli.
This was such an enjoyable, cozy but-spicy read with emotional depth touching on real life challenges of single parenthood, grief, and starting over.
Zoe was a standout for me. She was a total badass with her broadcasting career and her podcast “Zoe Knows” (obsessed… you know I love a podcast moment). The way she showed up for Jonah and Eli was perfection and shows she has a good heart.
THE CHEMISTRY was perfection too. The slow build to that first kiss from tension to desperation, it was so worth it. I was rooting for them the whole time.
Eli wasn’t just a side character; he was such a core part of the story. Sweet, real, and resilient after everything he’s been through. The dynamic between all three of them felt so genuine and full of love.
Zoe and Maddie’s relationship was so nice to see, their sister bond really stood out. It also felt like there’s more to Maddie’s story, and I’d love to see a future book exploring what happens to her after the breakup.
I loved seeing familiar faces like Floyd and Fiona made this even better. I loved that they showed up again, and that ending twist they gave us was such a fun surprise.
If you love small town, hockey romances with heart, humor, and found family vibes, this series is a must:

Calling all hockey romance fans - I just found your next read for you. Terra Weiss nailed this book, and I am dying for more! Book Two of her Beaver County series, Cut Off is a beautifully written story of a Jonah Holt, a hockey star traded to a new team with a new defensive line position to play after playing offense his whole hockey career. He's struggling to get his head in the game, but there's another struggle looming he didn't see coming. He's actually a dad! His ex-girlfriend from years past dies in a car accident, leaving behind a 9-year-old boy, Eli. As he's called down to the police station for more information, a news reporter, Zoe Lane, is called down to see what she can dig up for breaking news. Jonah is the brother of her BFF, Sydney, so putting all reporter hats aside, she chooses not to relay the story, costing her job. Have no fear, there's a solution as Jonah needs help to make ends meet while waiting for Eli to be taken out of the foster system and into his arms. Enter Zoe to help these two awkward boys to become family. Tara really captured the emotion behind her writing - there were so many heart wrenching twists and turns that I couldn't stop reading, hoping for a happy ending for father and son. Whether you're a parent or not, you feel the angst behind Jonah's longing to embrace fatherhood, Eli's desire to not disappoint or get in the way and Zoe's need to help in any way she can but also protecting her peace. Feel good vibes all the way with some heart tugs, swoon worthy kisses and small-town charm mixed in. I won't tell you if that happens or not as you'll have to read for yourself. Easily a 5 star read for me. I will be going back to book one soon!
