Hunter's Moon is Autumn Sullivan’s urban fantasy debut, packed with werewolves, fairies, witches, wraiths, and shapeshifters. But despite all the supernatural creatures in the story, the biggest monster is Aoife’s narcissistic, controlling, and emotionally abusive ex-husband, Blake.
Recently divorced and raising two daughters, Aoife is trying to figure out who she is after years of living for everyone else. Then one day, after being attacked by a strange creature while out on a run, her life changes forever. This isn't a spoiler, as the author reveals it early on: Aoife becomes a shapeshifting werewolf. Soon she discovers there's far more to her family history and bloodline than she ever imagined.
Alongside her new packmate and love interest, Conner, Aoife sets out to track a paranormal creature responsible for abducting local children. The mystery keeps the story moving, but what stood out to me most were the deeper themes woven throughout.
Beneath the action and magic is a story about healing from trauma, finding yourself after a toxic relationship, and the challenges of parenting. Aoife is trying to protect her teenage daughter, who doesn't fit neatly into society's expectations, and the book does a great job exploring the pressure families face when others want their children to conform to someone else's definition of "normal."
While I came for the werewolves and paranormal mystery, I stayed for Aoife’s journey of self-discovery and learning that it's never too late to reclaim your voice and decide who you want to be.

I don't read very many books with a mom as the protagonist and this was done so well. While I don't want kids, the 'maternal instinct' was portrayed so beautifully, as were the feelings of the daughters. Aoife has some more growing to do and I can't wait to see what comes next for such a fun cast of characters!
