“Allegorical reading is not an imposition upon the text from outside; it is a response to the depth that the text itself presents.” Loc. 1824

The foundation of allegorical interpretation is symbolic depictions of intellectual and spiritual truths. This deeper, concealed meaning is deliberate rather than coincidental. It is hidden by contradiction, symbolism, narrative structure, or metaphor. It can still be found by careful, focused reading. A true allegorical interpretation is not arbitrary. The ideas of allegory and "spiritual understanding" go hand in hand.

Scripture recognizes that some lessons are hard to learn (milk vs. solid food) and makes a distinction between levels of understanding (carnal vs. spiritual).

“The Bible not only contains allegorical meaning; it also provides the method by which such meaning is to be discerned.” Loc. 936

The reader finds meaning through analysis, comparison, and pattern detection rather than creating it. Allegorical reading is philosophically sound, methodologically sound, historically founded, and based on the Bible itself.

I consider this the greatest book on Bible interpretation that I’ve ever read.
