I don't know if it's because it's a little over Little One's head yet or what but I didn't particularly enjoy this book, but at the same time I could see where it could be used as a resource in a unit on life in Newfoundland in olden times.

I really liked some of the illustrations and especially the borders around the illustrations. The illustrator for the book is Rochelle Baker and this is her first illustrated children's book.

Mary is a young girl who works hard. She lives in Newfoundland where her father is a fisherman. While Mary is working drying cod toiling in the garden she dreams. Mary dreams of dancing in the fancy balls and meeting up with a rich Spanish merchant who will carry her way. Mary dreams of owning fancy clothes and wearing fancy jewelry. Butwhen the price of cod drops, Mary's dreams are, temporarily at least, put on hold.
