Teacher: The Henrietta Mears Story

Rate this book
Meet the author of the wise words above and the woman who shaped the lives of some of the most influential Christians of our time. Dr. Mears poured the energy of her mission—to know Christ and make Him known—into a generation of college kids who would leave a legacy of Christian leadership that can still be felt worldwide today. In these pages, you will experience some of Dr. Mears’s energy and passion to believe the impossible, which is no small thing, since she established Gospel Light, Forest Home and GLINT (Gospel Light International) and was instrumental in many organizations like Campus Crusade. Here is a winsome perspective of what God can do through a life that is totally surrendered to His purposes in the world.

I became familiar with Henrietta Mears having a copy of What The Bible Is All About when in my teens. I saw it as an excellent resource through my 20s and 30s, and perhaps one of the first (not quite) books to have me think about the one story, over-arching theme of the Bible. It also noted Billy Graham's acknowledgement of her work which impressed me a great deal. Ever since I had wondered what the deal was about HM apart from her book on the Bible.

This book, Teacher, appeared in my collection after mum went into age care a few years back. I never considered reading it but felt good I had something at my finger tips about HM if I ever wanted it. Now with a goal to read many of the books sitting on my shelf years ago, I decided to read this.

I mostly enjoyed the book. I am greatly impressed by what she achieved. Who would have thought the world could have been marked by a Sunday school teacher! Her humble beginnings to overseeing so many leaders and ministries is incomprehensible for me. She worked relentlessly, and blew my mind how quickly she established these ministries. There is no doubt what she was called to do! Now I understand what the big deal was, her having so much influence in Hollywood, and influence on great men like Billy Graham (just one of many worth mentioning).

I felt, however, that the book was a little repetitive with drawing out paragraphs on her greatness mentioning achievements like a point was to be made (point would have been made implicitly). I would like to have read about the achievements straightforward in a progressive narrative with perhaps a last chapter of her due credit and tributes from others. Nevertheless, just the way some biographies go.

And I think the author tried to add fat to the book by inspiring readers to think how great one can be in our own way, which kind of annoys me these days. Although I am being over critical here as he wasn't really saying we should achieve 'great' things like HM but rather we should not give up on what we think we are called to do, and like HM, greatness comes from 'thinking outside the box'.

So I gave the book 3 stars. 3 stars because of Henrietta Mears' astounding story, for her time it was remarkably and truly an acomplishment. I am grateful to the author for his research and the publishing of this book.

"One of the greatest Christians I have ever known." - Billy Graham.

Who? Who impressed Billy Graham so? She also impressed Bill Bright and encouraged him to start Campus Crusade for Christ. And dozens of other Christian leaders paid tribute to her at her death in 1963, when 2,000 people came to her service.

Who? Harriet Mears. She was a talented young Christian, converted and baptized at 7. She became a schoolteacher for fifteen years and then became the head of education of the Hollywood Presbertyrian Church in 1928.

Christianity or Hollywood culture--who will win? Read the book and find out how she went from Hollywood to worldwide influence.

An astonishing and inspiring book for anyone who works in ministry to read. Especially those in children’s ministry! This book details the extraordinary life of Henrietta Mears. What made her life extraordinary was her devotion to God and her desire to teach everyone about Jesus. You will be gobsmacked reading about the humility of a women who become the person who influenced the evangelical Christians we all know today.

I rated this book 5-starts because the biography is amazing and I think everyone should read it! I will caution that the writing is a little drawn out and isn’t as true to a biography as I expected it to be.

I'm just learning about Henrietta Mears whom I find to be a fascinating lady back when women weren't respected as much as ministers. I learned a bit about her in this book but I'm still hungry for more about her and her drive.

Some fire quotes in this book. Could've been a little more interesting but this lady's life was still epic and she did a ton for the kingdom! Love to see it

Despite my three star rating, I did like this book. It introduced me to someone that I'm surprised I had never heard of before! Henrietta Mears is an inspriring person who loved and lived for the Lord. What a mark she has made in the Christian world. I'm amazed at all the "more famous" people she has influenced (such as Billy Graham and Bill Bright). Great introductory read on a great Christian lady and leader.

I give Ms. Mears five stars. Unfortunately i found the writing in this book a bit flat. I feel bad saying that because I'm glad this author took the time to write this book, but the writing distracted me from the story.
