Sawyer's Ridge #1

Claimed on the Ridge

She escaped one man’s control… and landed in another’s hands.

I don’t exist anymore.

The name I gave him is fake. The life I left behind is worse. And if I don’t make it across the border soon, my husband will find me, and this time, I won’t survive it.

Sawyer’s Ridge was supposed to be a quick stop. One night. Then gone.
But the storm traps me on a mountain with a man who sees too much.

Alex Sawyer doesn’t ask questions. He watches. Waits. Decides.

He notices the flinch I can’t hide.
The lies I don’t quite tell fast enough.
The fear I’ve learned to bury.

He doesn’t trust me.
He doesn’t need to.

Because the moment he looks at me, something shifts, and suddenly, leaving isn’t an option he’s willing to allow.

When the men hunting me finally reach the ridge, they expect to find a woman alone.
What they find… is Alex.

And he’s not the kind of man who gives anything back once he’s claimed it.

Not his land.
Not his home.
And definitely not me.

Tropes inside:
Possessive Mountain Man • Forced Proximity • Escaped Wife • Touch Her and Die • Small Town Alaska • Protective Hero • Chosen Family • Storm Trapped • Emotional Healing • Romantic Suspense

Delta James is a USA Today bestselling author of steamy romantic suspense and paranormal romance. From alpha shifters prowling the wild to powerful billionaires ruling the boardroom, her books deliver heat, suspense, and unforgettable chemistry.

Delta never planned to write romance. In fact, she launched her author career in 2018 after deciding her second act in life needed a little more passion… and possibly a little more bite. Since then, she’s published dozens of addictive romances for readers who love their happily-ever-afters with plenty of steam and danger.

She lives in Florida with her pack of loyal basset hounds (who firmly believe they run the household), and when she’s not writing steamy scenes or plotting revenge for her latest heroine, she can usually be found riding horses, walking the beach, or chasing her next adventure on the river.

Claimed on the Ridge caught my attention because of the blurb, and when the excerpt drew me in further,i knew i had to give in and ask for a copy.
Because while it started with something that happened 18 years ago, that tragic event still had impact in the story that unfolded all those years after.
It was domestic abuse that made Catherine Sawyer take her daughter Amberly, and leave her husband and 4 sons behind.
And it was domestic abuse that made Kendall take her dying mother’s advice, and leave her husband while she had the chance.
She ran as far as she could, until the weather forced her to stop at Sawyer’s Ridge.
There,at Sawyer’s Lodge, she finds more than she expected, dared to hope for even.
The man that runs the Lodge may seem similar to the one she left behind, but he’s not.
Because even though Alex looks controlling, and acts like it at times,he does listen.
And when he realises what Kendall is running from,he and his brothers will do anything they can to help her.
Because they know what it means…..they know why she ran.
But will that be enough to stop a husband with the power to drag her back??
Or does Kendall have an ace up her sleeve that will back their attempt at stopping him?

Kendall may have been abused during her marriage, but she wasn’t broken.
And once she allowed Alex in,and once she gave him and his brothers her trust, she knew she could stay and make a stand against her husband.
Alex may have had his own traumas, but he was open to changing his behaviour to a certain degree.
Once he realized how strong Kendall was,he stepped aside and gave her the control she deserved in how to deal with the situation.
As long as she remembered she was his,as much as he was hers.

Great first in a series, and i look forward to hearing more of the Sawyer family!

Claimed On The Ridge Book 1 of Sawyers Ridge series is Amazing!

The emotion that Delta James put into this book and very real situations is eye opening.

Kendall and Alex a forced to spend time together due to Alaska weather. His place is the first place that you can get a room before driving further in the storm.

The description of Sawyer’s Ridge makes you feel like you are right there in the room with Alex, his brothers and Kendall.

Be aware if you are triggered by physical abuse references.

*I received this ARC Kindle Book from BookSirens. Thank You!

Romantic and Suspenseful

Rugged men built for action and control. A woman abused and made smaller by the man she ran from. In depth study of relationships, coping, moving forward and finding the person you are meant to be. Lots of tense interactions woven together with a romance to last forever. Extremely good story!

At first, it was kind of hard to get into the abrupt tactical writing style, but once you did, boy Howdy, this story was incredible. Kendall and Alex having this intense connection that is palpable on and off the pages. The way they find trust and passion together is beyond words. I can’t wait for this series to continue!!

Loved this book. It reads very similar to some of the oldest books I’ve read by this author.
Eleanor is a super strong woman who has likely scared her father and every other man in her community with her strength as none of them can stand as strong as she can. Her father basically lies to her and sells her to Ryland to get rid of her. I think he was afraid she would take over the leadership of the community if he lat her stay.
Ryland is a strong alpha who has absolutely no idea how to deal with the bond he feels or what to do with the feelings he has for Eleanor.
Between the two of them they will have to deal with the trouble that is coming and the issues the other alphas are having with the tribute women they chose.

The concept of this storyline was completely on point! I loved getting a peek into a plot centered on resilience and taking back your power. The character growth is excellent, and the romance is incredibly spicy. Delta James writes engaging, deeply developed characters that you can't help but root for. While I am personally not a big fan of the dual POV concept, the inspiring themes of reclaiming strength and the intense chemistry made this a wonderful 4-star .

Delta James is a new author for me. Typically I read dark romance. It has some of the similar tropes that I enjoy. This book was a good change of pace. It took me a little bit to get used to the abrupt tactical writing. It is a really good book and I am looking forward to book 2.

She’s running...looking for sancutary and safety.

The book has a strong female character the finally gets her say in her life. All the males she encounters want to “take care of her”. She has finally got it all together. When she visits her mother on her death bed, her mother tells her to run and gives her cash, so she stays under her husband’s radar. Kendall buys a truck and starts driving into a snowstorm. She wants to put as much space between herself and her rich, abusive husband. He has everybody snowed about his wife and his illegal dealings. Only Kendall can read upside down. Her husband thinks he has cowed. She needs shelter. She finds Sawyers Lodge and where she meets the Sawyer brothers; Alex, Cameron, Dash and Bryan. Can she trust her secret with these brothers? Did she find more than shelter?

Enjoyed this book. Kendal is escaping from her abusive husband when she is caught in a blizzard. She ends up at Sawyer Lodge and Alex gives her a room to stay. He doesn't push or get in her face when he knows that she is lying about her name and allows her to keep her space without judging. As she meets the other three brothers, she learns that they each have a different job that they do around the lodge. Alex finds himself watching her and is determined that he will protect her from whoever is after her. This book is full of drama, danger, emotions and a happy ending. I enjoyed this first book of a new series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Resilience.

Kendall is on the run from an abusive spouse when she ends up snow bound on Sawyer Ridge at the Inn by the same name. Four Sawyer brothers run the Inn with Alex being the oldest and in charge. Alex immediately recognizes that Kendall is running. I loved the character development. The brothers are so different, each carrying their past in their own way. They read each other without speaking and know that danger is coming and they will be ready. As Kendall learns to trust them and earn their trust in return, the unexpected relationship she develops with Alex can save her or smother her.

Amazing start to a series. I loved it. Such a comprehensive and well structured series. So much to grab onto in this one. I adored Kendall. What a survivor, strong and smart. I love all the Sawyers. Their background was teased and also explained Alex. Axing storyline for these two. Loved the added complexity and turns. And when they did finally come together, their chemistry made the connection on fire. Another awesome one by D. James!

I enjoyed the story. Its highly descriptive of what is currently happening and there are a lot of one line conversations. I love the strong character of Kendall and her ability to survive. Alex is every woman’s vision of the strong and silent type. Danger is getting closer but the Sawyer brothers will handle it like everything else in their life. It’s a story that is worth reading.

What a fabulous story. A brand new series that starts off with a strong heroine and a hero that is trying to shake off the shadow of his father. I really enjoyed reading this story and how the characters developed throughout it. It did not disappoint.

On the darker side of romance, we have suspense and fabulous plot development. The author weaves two familes together, sharing enough in their history to make something very difficult work. This is the best of storytelling… we learn about the characters & their pasts gradually, even as they walk through rather intense days together. There may be triggers for some, so check them if it matters.

I really like how Alex was able to recognize a woman in need and provide all of the supports she required to make her own decisions, and come to terms with what happened previously, and how to move forward. He was the steady influence she relied on to become her own strength.

Claimed on the Ridge is the first book in the Sawyer's Ridge series. This character driven intense storyline involves abuse, recovery, healing, trust, protection, and learning to stand on your own again. Character driven stories are my favorite and our main characters of Kendall and Alex are engaging and likeable. The secondary characters which include all of the Sawyers give great depth and flow to the story. When Kendall gets trapped by a snow storm at the Sawyers lodge she is very leery and mistrustful but she slowly learns to trust. Her abusive husband is looking for her. Can the Sawyer family keep Kendall safe? Will this independent woman all another man to make decisions for her? Will Alex's over the top possesive tendencies help or hurt the relationship? This book will entice readers from first to last page. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. This book may cause triggers in some but the topic is handled mostly with memories in the background of the current story.

Another great start to a new series for Delta James!
Sawyers Ridge prologue begins as a story from 18 years ago
An abused mother/wife leaving her husband and 4 boys behind.
Taking the one thing her husband never cared for, their daughter, Amberlie.
The switchbacks are brutal, especially during a Blizzard.
And unfortunately for Catherine, she drove her car over the ridgeline and into the valley below
She did not survive, her 10 year old daughter, Amberlie did.
As a trophy wife, Kendall Simmons knew how to disappear into the background.
Seen but not heard.
When she visits her sick dying mother, she is encouraged by her mother to escape the life she had with her abusive husband and run. Don't stay and watch her die, but escape and live her life as best she can.
So she ran.
Right into the Alaskan Ridgebacks, towards Sawyers Ridge and with an assumed name, Kendall Jackson finds herself in the middle of a blizzard and having to stop with no hope of continuing her journey.
The pass is closed due to the weather.
Alex and his brothers run Sawyers Lodge.
When Alex sees Kendall, he recognises the stance of Kendall and knows that he is going to help this woman fight her past. He can see a woman who has a history of abuse, just like his mother.
It's immediate attraction for Alex, and being the patient man he is, he is happy to ensure Kendall feels safe and knows that her exit plan is still in place once the roads are clear.
But he also knows he is going to make her choose between him and the journey on to Canada.
Kendall, also feeling the chemistry between her and Alex feels safe whenever he is around.
Not like her Husband, who constantly had herself on high alert, just waiting for the next blow to land.
Together they fight to keep Gary Simmons away from the Lodge and Swayers Ridge. But of course Gary's reach is long and wide and soon men sent to find her appear on the lodges doorstep.
Alex ensures they do not see Kendall and have them retreating. Will they return or will Gary up the ante...
Trouble with Gary, he doesn't give up!
A reasonable paced story with plenty of heat between Kendall and Alex.
The other brothers are introduced early in the story and help add context to the family's dynamic.
All show a unified front to ensure Kendall is safe, as with being with Alex, she has become family.
And of course, knowledge is great when it can help bring down a man that thought he was untouchable!
Alex and Kendall, with only a couple of hiccups in the storyline do finally find the HEA.

CLAIMED ON THE RIDGE is the first instalment in Delta James’ contemporary, adult SAWYER’S RIDGE erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on the Sawyer siblings: Alex, Dash, Cameron, Bryan and Amberly. This is lodge co-owner Alex Sawyer, and Kendall Mitchell Jackson’s story line.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspective (Kendall and Alex) CLAIMED ON THE RIDGE follows Kendall Mitchell Jackson as she escapes from an abusive relationship, heading north towards the Alaskan wilderness . Having left Fairbanks, Kendall finds herself in Sawyer’s Ridge where she will come face to face with her future in the guise of Alex Sawyer. Taking refuge at Sawyer’s Lodge, Kendall keeps to herself but Alex Sawyer suspects there is more to her story than meets the eye. A blizzard traps Kendall with the Sawyer brothers, brothers who are willing to risk their lives for our story line heroine but the past refuses to let go, and Kendall goes on the offensive, prepared to take down the man who destroyed her life.

The world building focuses on healing and recovery. Kendall struggles to trust, and Alex’s need to protect is a threat to our story line heroine but Alex is not the man whom she fears, but a man who will take the time to learn the truth about the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The relationship between Kendall and Alex begins when Kendall arrives at the family owned lodge. Kendall needs a place to stay, and Alex immediately sees something in our story line heroine. Kendall struggles with Alex’s overprotective nature, seeing the demons from her past at every turn. The $ex scenes are erotic and passionate, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are energetic, determined and charismatic. We are introduced to the Sawyer siblings: Dash, Cameron, Bryan and physician Dr. Amberly Sawyer.

CLAIMED ON THE RIDGE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, healing and recovery, family and friendships, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is dramatic, dark and edgy; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are determined, desperate and tenacious.

This story is not a sprint, it's a marathon, that although petrified, Kendall is determined to win.
Kendal stood tearfully at her dying mother's bedside knowing that she would never see her again, her mother had given her money and told her to run, run from Gary, her wealthy, controlling and abusive husband.
Kendall set off in the fifteen year old Chevy Silverado that she had bought from a lot, she only had a short time before Gary expected her back, a short time to reach the Canadian border with a false name.
Kendall didn't allow for the snow storm that impeded her flight, the zig zag roads were icy, she could see nothing through her rear window and very little through the front, as she was beginning to give up hope she saw Sawyers Lodge through the snow, sitting at the foot of the ridge.
Alex was the eldest of the strong, silent Sawyer siblings, Cameron, Dash and Bryan lived at the lodge, their sister Amberley ran a clinic in the small town.
The snow storm continued and the roads were quickly closed. the Lodge was cut off, Kendall was stranded for days, days that she couldn't afford, Gary had money , he had influence and he would have people out searching for her.
The attraction between Kendall and Alex was subtle at first but soon became combustible, the brothers didn't trust Kendall at the beginning, they knew that she was had secrets, secrets that soon became obvious.
The silence between the four brothers spoke volumes, they didn't need words, they were more than prepared for the city gents who came asking questions, city gents whose eyes missed nothing, the brothers were prepared to defend what they classed as theirs, ruggedly handsome mountain man Alex, had fallen for Kendall and he wasn't prepared to let her go, but the beautiful, timid hostess that Gary had toted to corporate dinners and galas had an ace up her sleeve, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"
This is a great story with likeable, well rounded characters, I look forward to further books in this series.

I liked the writing style in this book. It was abrupt and clipped, with a tone that sometimes felt almost clinical or detached. That sounds like it would lessen the emotional impact, but somehow it had the opposite effect. Even when it seemed emotionless, you could still feel the weight of the emotions behind the words.

I was intrigued by the way Kendall and Alex seemed to dance around each other. They didn't rush into anything or push too hard. They slowly felt each other out, built trust, and gradually grew closer.

Considering the short amount of time Kendall spent at the lodge, this could be called an instalove story. But it never felt like one. Alex and Kendall's relationship developed so naturally that it felt as though they'd been circling each other for months. At the same time, the author never lost the chemistry or intensity between them.

I appreciated how much emotion and suspense the author created with a small cast of characters. By the end of the book, each of Alex's siblings had developed a distinct personality, and I found myself just as interested in their stories as I was in Kendall and Alex's.

I also liked the way Alex's family accepted Kendall, each in their own way. None of them welcomed her in exactly the same manner, but each relationship felt unique and part of that character's personality. It made the family dynamic feel real and gave me another reason to look forward to each sibling's story.

One thing that occurred often enough for me to notice, was the repetition of a few details such as references to Kendall training herself to observe people, or to her habit of mentally cataloging information at business dinners while her husband underestimated her. I was glad it never became distracting or took away from the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

She was underestimated.

Kendall Simmons, or Kendall Jackson as she is calling herself, is running from her abusive husband, but a snowstorm is no joke in the Alaskan mountains. After hours of driving, visibility is nearly zero when she decides to stop for the night on Sawyer's Ridge. Alex Sawyer grew up on Sawyer Ridge in the mountain lodge his father built, and where Kendall stops for what she thinks is just one night. But Alex and his brothers know this mountain, and they know that this storm will keep the mountain passes closed for days if not weeks. Alex also notices the flinches, the fear she thought she was hiding, and the lies she can't quite pull off. What she thinks will be a one-night delay turns into a storm that seems unending in rustic lodge with a man she cannot resist, and she doesn't want to leave when the storm and the passes clear. Unfortunately, when the snow ends, her husband's search intensifies, but he underestimated the woman he married and with Alex at her side, she will do the best to destroy everything he built.
I think this is a fantastic book, with a strong, determined, and best of all seriously underestimated FMC who will take her life back by exposing her abuser, and the unexpected love she finds in a secluded mountain lodge. The MMC is a man who protects what he wants, and he want Kendall. But he will have to realize that she is a woman that cannot be minimized, that she is perfectly capable of taking down the man who thought he owned her. I enjoyed these characters, they are all well written, complex, and I think that they are also realistic. This is a must-read romantic suspense, steamy mountain man romance with surprising twists in the plot that I recommend to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by Book Sirens.

Claimed on the Ridge is book 1 in the Sawyer's Ridge series. This is a small town, hidden identity, forced proximity, woman on the run, romantic suspense story.
Kendall is trying to escape her abusive husband. While visiting her mother who is quite literally on her death bed, her mother slips her some cash and tells her to run. As much as she wants to be with her mother when she is passing, she doesn't want her mother's last wish of knowing she is safe to be in vain, so she runs.
After driving for hours, she stops at a lodge, pays in cash, and gives a fake name. The lodge owner, Alex, can tell by her body language and the way she calculates every move, that she is running from something. But then a snow storm comes and she's stuck at the lodge. The bonus to being stuck at the lodge is the time she gets to spend with Alex and the inmate feelings they get to explore. The downside to being stuck is that this will allow her husband to get closer.
The thing about Alex is that he is controlling as well. And Kendall fears that she's leaving one form of controlling for another, whether it be to help her or not. But I think that's just baggage she's carrying from the past relationship. Because Alex is all green flags. The way his family talks about him shows that. Kendall has to decide though, will she run again before her husband finds her, or will Alex and his families love and protection be enough for her to stay.
I thought this was a great, suspenseful romance story. However, I did find it to be slightly repetitive. The same thoughts are repeated several times. It didn't take away from the story, but it was noticeable. Definitely worth a read though.

Thanks to her dying mother, Kendall can finally escape her abusive spouse. And she takes full opportunity to run to Canada. What she didn't anticipate was the weather leaving her stranded along the way. Fortunately, she was able to take shelter in Sawyer Inn, but she plans to stay there for least amount of time possible because she is running out of time. What she did not expect was Alex and his three brothers. Forced to stay in close proximity turns out to be a blessing because she cannot run until roads open up and the downtime allows her to stop and think. Think about whether she wants to run or stay and fight. Whether she wants to be alone or act on the attraction to Alex. But is their explosive attraction enough? Does she have the strength to to give her heart to Alex and to make a stand. And Alex - does he have the ability to understand, accept and embrace what Kendall tells him she needs and wants? As their attraction grows, time runs out. But Kendall realizes she has the ability to stop her ex from taking her back. Between the knowledge she has within herself, the support of Alex, his 3 brothers and his sister maybe it is time to make a final stand rather than run.

A very enjoyable first book to a new series by this author. I look forward to reading the next installment.

This was the first book by this author I’ve read and wasn’t sure what to expect. Little did I know I would be adding her to my must read of authors.
Kendall has been driving for hours in the Alaska snow with the hopes of crossing over to Canada. The goal is to escape her very resourceful abusive husband.
But a blizzard has her stopping at Sawyer’s Ridge where accommodations are offered.
When Alex Sawyer meets Kendall, he immediately realizes she’s running from something or someone. Likely an abuser but the way Kendall moves and reacts. Something in him wants to protect her.
As the storm continues , so does the danger that will come soon enough and Sawyer’s feelings.
But to gain back herself, Kendall must feel in control. Something that Sawyer has to learn is important to her.
Will Sawyer and his siblings be able to support and help Kendall take control of her life and face her dangerous husband while still being safe?
The plot was a complex one. A reminder that domestic abuse is very real and at times, ends in a fatality. That the person abused needs the support of others not judgement. As well described by the author.
A great start to the new series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Booksirens. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Kendall knew her mom was right telling her to go. This is the only opportunity she'd have to get away without him knowing for a few days. Leaving her mom on her death bed wasnt really what she wanted to do, but it's the only time she can. Now driving a car through a snow storm unable to see the road properly. One bad choice after another. But at least she's away from her abusive husband. All she needs is to get over the border and disappear. Except now she has to stop at this hotel in the middle of nowhere just to escape the snow. Alex runs the guest house since his father's death. With his brothers they've kept the place running. Even after the childhood they grow up with. Now the four brother's and their sister live their choice of life. Then she walks in the middle of a snow storm at midnight. Alex knows shes hiding something. A false name. Checking the exists. Always looking around. All things most people would miss but not him. It's how he lives. But what or who is she hiding from. Two people who have lived in abusive homes. Can they help each other. Will Kendall ever find a safe place. Or does her husband's reach go further than she thought. Is she right to feel safe with Alex. Can he protect her. This is the first in this series and I can't wait to read more

This is the 1st of Sawyer's Ridge Series where we find Kendall on the run from an abusive husband with money in her hand that her mother gives her on her death bed with a promise she’ll never returning. While driving in the Alaskan snow storm Kendall finds herself seeking shelter at Sawyer’s Ridge. Alex the oldest of the siblings sees something in her eyes that lends to strength and a history of trauma and invites her t9 stay until the storm passes. The brothers wake to a new guest and all can see the trouble following Kendall and they follow protection directions from Alex. As Kendall gives a fake name they all know everything else is truth. The connection and pull Alex have brings them closer and when they cross into more there is an undeniable understanding and what’s needed to eliminate the threat to her safety and life. Alex tries to control decisions and information and Kendall doesn’t stand for it and it only shows him what’s most important, learning to adapt and move forward. Dash, Cameron, Bryan and Amberly support Kendall in the actions needed to bring her husband down syntactically and the chance to live a life full of love and family!
