This book is definitely the ultimate guide to help everyone in sketching and pencil drawing. - Daniel Smith

Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name. ABOUT THE AUTHOR David Adams spends as much time as possible in the Australian bush, honing survival skills, gold, treasure fossicking, and hunting feral animals throughout Australia. He served as an Officer in the Australian Army Reserve during the post-Vietnam era. Dave has trained alongside members of the United States Marine Corps and Special Air Services SAS personnel. Serving his last two years in the A.D.F as a Platoon Commander Military Police provided him with exposure to law enforcement working closely with his civilian counterparts in the Queensland Police Service. Dave relies on this real-life experience to provide him with authentic characters, settings, and a knowledge of military equipment and procedures. He continues to travel the world in search of exciting settings and characters that he hopes will transport his readers to these exotic places while adding a reality to his books. e in the Goodreads data base.
Jumped from shading of a sphere to portraiture which was a bit too much of a jump. Up until that point it was going very well although more examples would have been useful throughout.
Pure Trash -- David Adams Cannot Seriously Call This a Book
It's not clear whether David Adams can draw much less teach anyone else how. There are very few drawing examples and where a picture would work far better than a wordy explanation, you get a wordy explanation.
Unfortunately, his writing is as at least as bad as his drawing. Forgive me, the writing isn't bad, it's HORRENDOUS. The "book" is filled with misspellings, cliches that he's misused and muddled concepts that are repeated several times. He hardly gets down to business before he gets hung up all over again reminding you that you too can draw. It's like he's trying to convince himself.
He does explain some concepts, although not quite adequately. This is very reminiscent of fourth grade writing where the teacher told you to write five pages on a topic and you only had enough material for half of a page. So, you faked it.
Well, David has faked this book. He's trying to make a buck. He has no talent for writing, no talent for teaching, and it's anybody's guess if he has any talent for drawing (although he does actually know the correct names for drawing concepts).
The real joke comes at the end. David puts a plug in for another one of his books. This one is on photography and he has self-described as "brilliant". He's also included an excerpt from the photography book as a teaser. Unfortunately, even the short teaser is horrendously written.
David, give it up. There must be something you're actually good at.
This book contains a lot of useful information about drawing, but what makes it different from the rest is that it starts with a little History about art and the way it developed over the centuries. It states that if a person wants to be an artist, it's completely possible but it also says you can't just jump into it and create a masterpiece in 5 minutes. The book talks about lines, shapes, negative space, perspective etc. The drawing exercises are very good and have a basic supplies list so you're all set to start. The most original thing in the book, in my opinion, is that it teaches you ways to hold your pencil the right way, something many aspiring artists don't know. Highly recommended to everyone who wishes to start making art.
If you are a "Beginner" as far as drawing or sketching, this book might be just what you need. if you are beyond the Beginning stage, continue looking.
