Following on from that shocking cliffhanger in book 9, Rhys is now living a sort of afterlife, if you will, on Cosmos. A genuinely horrifying and bleak place where all the residents have to fight each other during the day, everyday. All for one person to reach a magical tower where they can get the chance to go back home if they wish, or so they thought. Once someone does win the day, the day turns into night everybody comes back to life and everything resets ready for the next day to begin. Rhys, feeling dejected and worthless doesn’t participate in the game instead opting to kill himself when the sun comes up and then drinks himself silly all night every night. And he does that for thousands of days until Axl shows up. After the events of the last book he only has one chance to redeem himself and is sent to Cosmos to help Rhys win the day and come home to Asylum. That doesn’t prove easy though especially as Rhys hates Axl and wants him dead. The only problem is Axl only has 10 lives which he quickly uses 9 up because of Rhys and not until Nimi a spirit guide shows up that Rhys finally relents and agrees to travel Cosmos to win and get home. Even when joined by Logan that does not prove to be easy though and so starts a long and perilous journey where they have to unite the species in the Cosmos against the Atheriens. As with the previous books in the series there is a lot going on that 600 pages can barely contain. There aren’t as many of those big epic battle scenes that the previous books are famous for but it is in no means slower. C.G. Jaquish still manages to maintain that breathless fast pace that we all love. As well as the fight to get home you have the secondary storyline with Axl and Nimi who is tasked with the thankless task of turning Axl into a good person so he can get a soul but that plan goes a bit awry. Then there is the eternal question of whether Eclipse is still alive or not and with the help of Nimi we see some of Eclipse’s back story. Whether it answers the question you will have to see for yourself as you will be kept guessing until the very last page. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns and the action, but what I loved the most was some of the small conversations between the characters. Some were tongue in cheek and some were a clever and sharp comment on today’s world. I am genuinely looking forward to book 11 because I get the feeling that the stage is being set for something big coming.

Dark, messy, and totally addictive.


I’ll be honest-this is book ten of an ongoing series, and I’ve only read the first book. Luckily, the author uses multiple timelines beautifully to fill in the gaps, making it feel detailed enough to read almost like a standalone.

The story follows Axl’s grief-stricken journey into the Cosmos, a brutal realm where the day only resets when someone wins, bringing the dead back to life. Rhys and Logan arrive to retrieve him, but these rivals must learn to work together. Along the way, Axl gains a Spirit named Nimi, whose inability to bond with him leads to a massive plot twist. Through Nimi's astral projections, they relive memories of Eclipse. During their grueling journey to the Spire, the group must also win over the local dragons; though the dragons dislike them at first, they learn to accept them-especially once Axl discovers he can hatch their dormant, thousands-of-years-old eggs. Ultimately, they must put their differences aside to win the day so they can get back to Asylum and find out the truth: is Eclipse truly dead? Axl refuses to believe she is gone.

Beneath the heavy trauma, there are powerful love stories at play. Axl, Rhys, and Logan all love Eclipse in different realms and time, but Axl’s devotion runs the deepest.

It ends on a massive cliffhanger, and I cannot wait for book 11!

Not just your friends, but millions and billions of people you never met. So, yes, we will miss you and many will mourn and weep and drink themselves to death. And if you don't want to see that, I understand, and I won't stay long enough for you to know which I am. But you deserve to know that you will be missed. Every day, Peaches."


This book is not for the faint of heart or for people with triggers around violence or murder.
