It’s a new season and a new start for Jay and her wilful pony Finn, but their best laid plans are quickly plagued by injuries, arguments and rails that just won’t stay in their cups. And when her father introduces her to his new girlfriend, Jay can’t help wondering if her life will ever run according to plan.

As her friends battle with their own families and Jay struggles to define hers, it is only her determination to bring out the best in her pony that keeps her going. But after overhearing a top rider say that Finn’s potential is being hampered by her incompetent rider, Jay is besieged by doubts in her own ability…and begins to wonder whether Finn would be better off without her.

Can Jay bear to give up on her dreams, even if it’s for her pony’s sake?

I really enjoyed both of the Clearwater Bay books - the equestrian elements of the books were interesting, and believable - and coming from a riding background myself, I loved reading the accurate descriptions of the riding, competitions, and general horse care. I liked that you really could see that each horse plays an important role in the story, not just a side note of "oh, by the way, the books has horses in it".

Jay's character is well written, and I like how she has experiences drama, but doesn't have too much over the top teen angst. Not all teens are unhappy all the time, right? The supporting cast of characters are well fleshed out and believable, and in book 2; I found the scene between Jay and Nina {Jay's dad's ex-girlfriend at this stage} where they talk after Jay finds out about the break up (Chapter Thirteen) particularly poignant. (There might have been some tears at the end of that scene...)

I'm glad she does the sensible thing and starts to learn from her mistakes in Book 1 and actually talks to her Dad and to Nina! Yay Jay! Yay for character development!

I am looking forwards to reading more about Jay and Finn, and the rest of the Clearwater Bay crew. Kate Lattey is a new pony book author to me, but I think that her handling of the genre is first class, and I can't wait to read more of her work!

This was fantastic - somehow even better than the first. I think what I like about Jay as a heroine is that she's not the best rider - she has to work at it. There are so many YA horsey books where the main character is an OMG amazing, undiscovered, super-talented rider who just never had the chance. Jay screws up, she gets mad, she LEARNS. I love that. Lattey's characters have so much depth. I'm glad to see that there's at least one more in this series - hopefully many more!

NEW ZEALAND kids

Kate Lattey's novels about Young New Zealand equestrians are superb for both youth and adult readers. She tackles real life adolescent problems and weaves them into an amazingly consistent web of young riders and their ponies. The thread that runs through PONY JUMPERS, CLEARWATER BAY and the DARE TO DREAM series ties all these believable kids together with ponies, parents, joy and tragedy. Kate Lattey is a wonderful contemporary writer!

Against the Clock

I loved the second installment in this series even loved than the first. The author developed characters who the reader begins to care for and want to get to know better ( I totally want at least a trilogy surrounding Abby and her career from pony jumpers to Grand Prix horse). I look forward to reading the next installment in this series. It is appropriate for readers 10-100!

Clearwater Bay #2 Review

The main character, Jay,shows signs of growing up. Her emotions flip flop each day and her mood swings are huge. She is learning to take on accountability for her own actions, but just when you think she will act responsible she runs away to sulk. The book ends on a high note, hopefully giving Jay more self-confidence. There is an anonymous saying at the end that sums up the way Jay should feel and act. We'll have to see if she can stay in control of her her emotions and her pony, Finn, in the next book.
